14 Squadron RNZAF - Christchurch June 1999.
Ғылым және технология
My last deployment with 14... From Ohakea to Christchurch in the winter of 1999. Coincidentally, an Air France Concorde was at Christchurch as part of a 'round the world' flight for the well-heeled. This was the last time Concorde was seen in New Zealand. A little over a year later, a different Air France Concorde crashed on take-off from CDG killing all on board and 4 on the ground, precipitating the withdrawal and subsequent retirement of all Concordes. The RNZAF Boeing 727 - NZ7272 - seen in this video has just been cut-up (May 2019) awaiting disposal at RNZAF base Woodbourne - I assisted in its dismantling. The front cockpit section is set to be a static display at the Airforce Museum, Wigram Christchurch.
Central Christchurch looks very different now since the February 22 2011 magnitude 6.3 earthquake. Many buildings in the video didn't survive and have been demolished - much of the heart and soul of the city disappeared. The new Christchurch is beginning to appear and the gaps are slowly being filled.

I remember in the Army going out to hide in North Canterbury around 1999 for some training exercise to see whether the Airforce could find us. Went out for a run one day in my greens and within 5 minutes a jet comes down low altitude and strafes me. I remember thinking, yup that's me f*cked.
Awesome! I was incredibly lucky to have gotten to fly with the chief Aermacchi test pilot in one of the RNZAF 339’s while in Verase. Brilliant little jet trainer! Pity the NZ govt scrapped the Macchi’s and our beautiful little A4’s!
I remember the air shows at ohakea in the 80s. Great days.
Am i correct in assuming New Zealand doesn't possess the means to defend it's own air space ? I bet the government's excuse is we haven't had any problems yet , there is a first time for everything
Thanks! I am building a kiwi 339 at the moment. Lovely aircraft .
i landed in CHCH airport in june 2000, exactly one year later, when i walked out of arrival hall gate , i saw a really fat sparrow on the ground
Awesome footage of the Macchis.
Nice work with the camera!
Thanks! 👍🇳🇿
I recognize a few people in the video and they're still in!
I bet the controllers at NZCH loved fitting 4 Macchis into the pattern.
It all seems like a long, long time ago... 14 Sqn has been re-equipped with the Texan tubrboprop trainers and are still at Ohakea.

@@That-Moto-Guy Come on man - get real. The Health System is essential. An Air Force for a country with no enemies is not essential, is a farce, and is a waste of money. The will be zero negative consequences for getting rid of these obsolete SkyHawks. You can't be serious my man.

Bike Guy It was always ‘full on’ in the days leading up to a deployment trying to get as many jets serviceable as possible. I recall one Easter getting ALL our Macchis serviceable for a formation photo (I have a print of it). Two of the jets were authorised for one flight only as hours were already up for scheduled maintenance. Happy days indeed...

this video is cool as shit!
NZ relies upon Australia for it's territorial defence and by extension the USA for it's strategic integrity. NZ is a drag on the western alliance. Thankfully all it's best people serve in the Australian or UK air forces and navies.

Australia can't defend its own massive coastline with its small forces and largely relies on the US, there is no way NZ could ever rely on Australia, secondly any threat would largely have to come through Australia due to supply line considerations. NZ has a defense agreement with the US and yes would have to rely on that if shit ever hit the fan, that part is true.
Thanks to Helen Clarks socialist Govt we were left with an Air force with out force!
Why rnzaf should buy out argiitine pampa lol gt light fighters
