RNZAF Vampire Display Team 1964

Title says it all. Is off a video I bought a while ago, maybe filmed by National Film Unit. Excuse the slight jerkiness, is converted from analogue to digital and best I can do at the moment.

Glad you can use it and an interesting connection, thanks for commenting. It is actually off an historic NZ aviation DVD I have back home, if possible I'd be happy for you to have a copy but not sure when I'll be back. Great story for your family though.

Back in the early 2000s as a budding commercial pilot I had the unexpected pleasure to sit with TT (Trevor) Bland for lunch. I had no idea who he was, but as we were with a group of aviation enthusiasts (the Catalina society) I asked him if he had flown. Yes he replied. I enquired what types? I was rewarded with the longest list of fascinating types, it blew my socks off! What ensued was a fascinating lunch with such an interesting, humble man. Nearly 20 years ago but I’ll never forget it. RIP TT!

Great video - I was 3 years old and living in Sanson, just south of the runway when this video was shot. As such Vampires and Harvard trainers then later Skyhawks and Strikemasters were a big part of my childhood...Mike

+JoeTheLion60 Yeah I'm from Waikanae so we used to get a few blatting over, and anytime we were heading to Taupo or Wanganui it was a national uprising if we didn't stop by Ohakea. The old man had the tearooms at Turakina for a while so that was a good viewing area for Strikemaster training. In fact I've just been going through a few bits and pieces of his I kept which need sorting, and came across all the newspaper stories for the Vulcan incident in Wellington that went on to (crash)land at Ohakea, and lots of aircraft related stories from the region.

The museum at Temora, New South Wales has a flying Vampire. They have shows on 4 times a year and also bring it down to the Avalon Airshow for displays. The Temora crew also fly on live Martin-Baker's. They are the only Australians licensed to maintain them. (Other jets that fly out of Temora include a Saber, Meteor, Canberra and to Provosts)..

Looks like it was filmed while they were practicing for the big Open Day which was held in 1964. I was based on Ohakea at this time, and was in the process of re-mustering from Radar to Photography. The Good Old Days.

The RAAF aerobatics team, the Red Sales flying Vampires was formed in 1962. This was replaced by the Telstars, also flying Vampires which flew till 1968. I remember Vampires flying out of RAAF Laverton and Point Cook in the mid 60's.

Okay, but this isn't an Avon, it is a DH Goblin. The Avon is a later, axial flow type used on planes like the Hawker Hunter. The Vampire is from 1941, way before the Avon ever existed.

This is the reason I've found this video. It was sent to me by Peter Jackson (not THAT Peter Jackson) who filled me in about Trevor's passing and his amazing career. He was a Cadet in the Air Training Corps unit that I now run many, many years ago before joining the RNZAF. Evidently he went on to be instrumental in forming the Warbirds Assoc and was their patron for many years. A truly great man.

Hopefully I'll get to see a Vampire in the air at some point, always one of my favourite aircraft when I was young...have missed a couple of recent airshows in Aus and here but may get up to Omaka again this year. Is always interesting to hear about the pilots and their backgrounds, and the incredible amount of hours that goes into maintenance etc - is a commentary on one of my Spitfire videos which touches on this.

The layout and buildings look like Wigram , but I have a nagging suspicion that is is not....the roads around the airfield dont look right. And I suppose Ohakea and Wigram were quite similar in 1964 ??? Hope someone can help me out , as I have just told an American friend that it is Wigram....lolol .

Passed thru a couple of years back on a ride up north and it didn't seem much different, but I've always liked the countryside out towards Poranga-horrible. The old RSA around our way is a different beast to what it used to be, but as long as younger folk keep getting involved it should remain okay.
