The narrower bezel looks like a real improvement, and I imagine any software with a menu bar crowded enough to hit the notch could be taught to push the rightward options a little further. I would very much like to put one of these through the paces - my main worry is how soon the fan starts making noticeable noise (I love the fanless models for their fanlessness).

Sounds like I need one especially shooting with my Canon R5. My i9 with upgraded AMD Radeon Pro 5600 isn’t cutting it. Spending all night making proxies so I can work on my edit in the morning.

Awesome content as always guys!!!! Definitely surprised by the results! Didn’t expect such a big step up in performance.

We all were waiting so long for those machines to finally come out! Excited to see how well they perform. My old MBP needs definitely an update. Everything i was expected for this redesigned MBP Apple delivered!! I don’t mind a slightly chunkier design tbh given that we get ports back, better battery, better thermals and a massive display update! Excited to get my hands on one of those 😝

Thank you so much for taking the time to compare the HDR display. Literally every other KZreadr just gives an opinion on the notch and completely skips talking about the display. I've been watching these unbox videos all day and you are only channel to test the displays to this extent. This is easily, hands down, the best M1 Pro video I've seen so far. I hope you guys can do more HDR tests in the future, like with Dolby Vision (when the apps work), and comparing the Macbooks to the iPad Pros.

I like that Apple rolled back on their ultra-slim, no more ports mantra for pro grade machines. There was a Bloomberg article wich argued that product design improved since Jony Ive left… It says that without Steve Jobs’s moderating influence, Ive went too far in prioritizing form over function, and that this has since been corrected. I think the new MacBooks Pro show this.

Your videos have been super helpful and I love that you really compare individual component differences instead of only M1 pro vs fully decked out M1 max.

Thank you for the in depth review! I was leaning toward the new model but there was a small part of me thinking of just going for the previous gen before seeing this.

Excellent tests Max, well done! I'd love to see a comparison of the USB port speed using a very fast portable SSD, as well as the SD slot speed. As someone who's weighing up configurations, i'm also interested in your upcoming tests on the 1TB SSD version, but I'm also curious whether 16GB RAM is enough for my basic video editing, or whether 32 would make much difference.

Apple claims (after the event) the SD slot goes up to 250MB/s. Hopefully that holds true for sustained transfers.

I would pick RAM based on how long you keep your laptops and cameras. For me, using a 2016 MBPro that struggles with 4K, I would want my next computer to handle easily handle 4K60fps and beyond.

UPDATE! I decided to go into an Apple store today to do some tests! Sony 128GB TOUGH card (300mbyte read). 10.68GB video file, copied in 39 secs = 280mb/s. 2.99GB photo folder in 12.5s = 244mb/s, both reassuringly same as my USB-C SD reader

The 13" screen always seemed small to me but 14.2 seems like a sweet spot between portability and screen size while not being as big as a 16 inch

Another solid review Max. Quite surprising the speaker on the 13 inch was not far from the 14inch. Would love to see a comparison between 13 m1 vs 14. Keep up the good work

Hey, regarding the speakera, he mentioned it "seemed" louder because of the highs on the 14, but when he checked the test on his watch ,the 14 in infact was louder, and great sub woofer and clearer sound. Peace bro.

I’m quite astonished how good the display is, specifically. The black toolbar area when you enter full-screen mode is so black that the notch blends in and almost disappears. Insane!

This is so cool. I really love that the 1080p cam is back and the new keyboard well. Also very happy to see that the base model comes with two fans and not one (iMac 24").

It’s so amazing that the 14” has so much power in it in a 14” form factor. It’s so impressive. The 13” has niche situations, but 14” is definitely more “pro”.

@@godmode4790 it doesn't bother me as much as the iPhone but it is still very annoying. Dell has been doing thin bezels with no notch for many many years. My iPad has no notch and I have never thought hmmm I wish I had slimmer bezels. I would take an extra 2mm of bezel up top if it meant no notch any day of the week.

Exciting. Great video comparison. It helps to understand what the spec difference really mean in the benchmark terms.

I'm curious how Intel will respond to these chips by Apple. Great video man! I have been rocking a 2012 13" MBP for the longest time and it would be great to have this beast!

I've been watching all these MacBook Pro videos and I have to say you guys are super thorough. Some of the things I've discovered in the videos I wouldn't have expected.

The vent you're pointing to and wondering about at 05:46 is, presumably, a cold air intake ( see the color of the airflows at 04:45 ). So, these new M1-based MBPs take cold air not only from the sides of the case, but also from the rear. That additional cold air channel is a nice engineering touch, compared with previous MBPs that had only the lateral air intakes. It's also nice to see that the rubber feet on the back cover now seem to be surrounded / protected by a raised metal lip around them, and might last longer. Withe the Intel-based MBPs, the rubber feet had a propensity to get unglued and lost, which was super-annoying, as Apple said that these feed were not replaceable parts, and that the whole metal back cover had to be replaced if one wanted a missing rubber foot issue to be fixed !

You look SO excited, Max! Thanks so much for doing such a comprehensive comparison and awesome contest. I'd love to see your recs for 1) Budget/entry-level users 2) Mid-tier / prosumers 3) power users/dream specs

Yha M1 MacBook Air should be great but if you wan't a fan I would go with 13 inch pro for $1299. If you use Refurbished Apple store you can get $200 - $300 off both Air and 13 inch Pro.

Such an extensive review. You took a lot of time in marking the subsections meticulously. Great job. In terms of speed, there’s no doubt about the 14 inch MacBook. The performance is insane. However, the notch may not be to everyone’s liking although it’s possible that this may grow with time. Also, please do a MacBook 13 inch M1 vs 14 inch M1 pro comparison video, please.

This test is silly. He comparing it against the old Intel?! Who's doing that? No one is buying the Intel Macbook. We want to see what the performance delta is from M1 > M1 Max > M1 Pro. No one cares about an Intel in a MBP anymore! Last year hundreds of reviews were posted showing the M1's dominance and thermal efficiency.

@@annikania2682 When the i9 MBPs were released their poor thermals and throttling issues were well documented. Apple was properly lit up for using the processor but not changing the case design to accommodate its cooling needs. So on that fact alone, everyone knew the i9s were going be a laggard when Apple silicone was unveiled. When the M1 was officially tested against the i7 / i9 into into ad nauseam by 100s of reviewers last year, the outcome was clear. The M1 is the new benchmark to test new chips against. We all know the "M" line trounces Intel based Macs. So doing it again is reductive. Sort of like saying, "Last year we showed you how the Intel sucked, but now let us show you how much they really suck again" What is the point?

Yes. I just got an M1 Air last week but just checked them out in the store and that new screen is incredible. I don’t need the performance but that screen and SD cars are tempting. Better performance is a bonus too lol.

This actually blown my mind. I remember receiving my very first Macbook, it was the base model Macbook Pro 13” Late 2011. I remember being so blown away by the performance and it is still serving it’s purpose ‘til this day. Who would think that a laptop can last for almost a decade! It still has power but lately, I’ve been experiencing issues with it. I guess it’s time to let go to my old one and save one for another one. My friends recommended me using Windows laptop but my decision was made and I would save up for a Macbook. Apple just proved to me how long their product can last when handled with care. I’ve been an Apple user since the start and I would love for you to cover all new products from Apple this week! Winning the giveaway would really help me out. I've been working with IT for over 20 years now... and the M1 chip surpassed my expectations, by a lot. The 2017-2020 Intel era was terrible, my users were not happy, most changed to XPSs. Now everyone want back to M1 :) Awesome. Awesome job man, keep it up!

It’d pretty easy to not go back to Intel MacBook Pros since… Apple doesn’t sell them anymore.

Wow the XCode test was really eye opening! This is one of those things that has a bigger effect than you might think as most developers are compiling frequently and the dev tools are often doing automatic recompilation for error checking reasons. These will be a really significant upgrade! Plus not being burnt by your laptop would be nice.

Love the videos man. My heart was pounding while you cracked these new things open! My ocd was killing me. Haha

Great comparisons. This helped my Christmas shopping immensely!

I think it's interesting that their "new" design, with more a more squared body and vents under the screen, is basically a more modern version on the late PowerPC / Early Intel design, the pre-Unibody era.

The most detailed look at the new machines yet! The thickness comparison was spot on, the flipped upside down comparison was exactly what I was looking for. As far as the future videos go, I would be really interested in the real world video editing performance of these machines. The timeline playback performance is far more important than the rendering speeds. So I would love to see some timeline playback tests with different resolutions & codecs and with some common color grading plugins like Flimconvert applied on top of those clips. I have the M1 iMac and the timeline performance (High quality playback without background rendering) really suffers when I use plugins such as Filmcovert and RSMB Motion Blur on top of the 4K clips from my Panasonic S5. Really hoping that the M1 Pro/Max chips will offer smoother editing performance in the real world scenarios especially on a 6K timeline.

This video was very helpful!! I wasn’t sure what I wanted to get and it helped me make my decision to get the newer model
