13 Year Old Blind Lucy's Final Performance at the Royal Festival Hall on The Piano Show
Ойындар
13 year old blind Lucy's final performance on Channel 4's The Piano at the Royal Festival Hall!
Lucy performs Arabesque No 1 by Debussy.
Claudia Winkleman, Mika and Lang Lang have been great as hosts and judges, but it's the contestants who shine in this heartfelt competition
Made by Love Productions, the firm behind The Great British Bake Off, the series invited amateur players of all ages to perform on “street pianos” in Glasgow Central, London St Pancras, Leeds and Birmingham stations.
Lucy, 13, from West Yorkshire is neurodivergent and blind. She had played Chopin in the Leeds heat and chose Debussy for the final -a harder piece, thought Lang Lang.
Viewers watched Sean, Lucy, Jay (St Pancras winner), and Danny (Birmingham) having mentoring sessions with the judges.
Lucy was second on stage, accompanied by her teacher, Daniel. Waiting backstage was her mum and the three lads who by now had assumed full big brother status.
As she walked to the piano, Lucy asked for Sean and the others, and her mum. It was her way of reassuring herself, part of a pre-performance ritual. Seated at the piano she was at home, perfectly relaxed. A stirring three minutes later, Lang Lang was leading the audience in a standing ovation. Number of dry eyes in the house? Zero.
But it soon proved to be something different. There was the soaring level of genuine talent on display, enough to stop commuters in their tracks. Add to this Winkleman’s way of putting people at their ease, and Channel 4 was on its way to a hit, with audiences of close to two million on the night.
The judges have played their part too. If a panellist on Britain’s Got Talent panel says you are brilliant it’s nice but hardly the first time they’ve doled out the compliment. If Lang Lang calls you a genius, as he did with Lucy, it matters.
There was one last surprise for the finalists - a piano each, delivered to their homes!

Notice that most 'normal' people chronically moving their heads so violently, side-to-side, would develop in seconds 'positional vertigo,' get dizzy and fall from the chair. Lucy's brain has adapted so well that--even though totally blind and moving her head constantly without vertigo--her hands and fingers still know perfectly well where each key in the keyboard is and how to get to them. Lucy's positional awareness over and above her disabilities--never mind her intense musical talent--is the quintessential example of brain and body plasticity to adapt, survive, and even thrive. Amazing! Go Lucy!

She sees through each note that she plays. The music is her walk through the park.
Lucy, I’m 86 years old. My heart jumped with every note you played. You not only give people music, you teach them lessons in life. You give hope to many that feel hopeless. You show braveness to those that are timid. You show loveliness to those that can’t smile. Those things and so many things more. Your mother is priceless in recognizing this amazing talent and fostering it. Your teacher is amazing in his skills that helped make you what you are today…a great musician and a beautiful woman. Except for what I’ve just said, I’m speechless. Your truly a miracle!! 14:08

We only can hope that all the persons who are responsible for Lucy (her mother(parents?), her teachers...) will find a soft way for her to be an inclusion star and an incredible talented pianist what offers the chance to earn a lot of money and the lovely nex-door-girl, the young, special need teenager who will need constant nursing care, love and professional help. Everybody who's overwhelmed by her abilities and her personality should gave her the respect and the time to grow up. Playing the piano is her way of communicating with the world out here, let's not clog that channel with our exaggerated demands!

👩💻Having been raised by a concert pianist who practiced daily for 2 or 3 hours, raising 12 children, Lucy is wonderfully amazing. I remember sitting or laying under the piano as my mom practiced and loving the vibrations, sounds, and repeated sections until my mom's execution was perfect. With my mom and Lucy, the music flows out of their finger tips. Absolutely gorgeous!!🙋♀️🥰🇺🇲🇬🇧🎶🎵🎶

Simply put, you just cannot put into words on how remarkable Lucy's success story truly is. And it really takes a special bond and synergy of her and her very dedicated teacher to make it this far. And I love the bromance between Lang Lang and Mika. And gifting Lucy, Daniel, Sean and Jay each an Essex upright, is such a nice gesture to motivate them to further continue their music making!
Lucy is clearly a genius, her teacher a saint. The three boys seem so lovely and so so talented. I cannot whistle in tune so know bugger all about playing the piano, Lucy is bound for greatness and I really hope the three boys have fabulous futures in front of them. Proud to be British tonight.

Some of us cultivate it, knowing it is an integral part of us early. Some of us get so distracted by our world that we miss cultivating that part of ourselves. Incredible. That music resides somewhere deep within her. She has PERFECT piano fingers I WISH my fingers moved like hers!), and an amazing teacher. What a gift. I hope the joy of playing stays with her all her life.
What this video more than once. The first time i saw this video of her playing this. It sounded like a gentle rainfall. So soft and gentle.

Her rendition gives me chills. I never heard it played so smoothly.
Every time I have listened to this, it's made me bloody cry.
I have never heard a piano play so smoothly.
I mean her brain is something next level seriously. Just an absolutely extraordinary human with tremendously amazing people in her corner. Just remarkable.
I love how she becomes one with the piano... Her dynamics from a whisper to thunder are amazing.(2:53)
She moves her head almost exactly the same way Stevie Wonder and Ray Charles (when he was young) did when they play the piano. There must be some connection. She is brilliant.

The piano is an extension of Lucy's body and together they express the manifestation of the spirit that flows freely through the musical notes played by her fingers with love, passion and feeling. I close my eyes and let my spirit break free as well. And tears of happiness roll from my eyes. Congratulations Lucy. Thank you for playing the piano with your heart! ❤🌹

Wow! She plays beautifully (and is quite beautiful herself).
Shes amazing, how its so effortless for her to wring so much from just a simple instrument and the emotion that illicits from the listener is so powerful. A great showcase of the talent available today thank you for showcasing just how alive and vibrant this generation is and its depth is of talent. Thank you Mika and Ylang Ylang for creating this for us all to enjoy and bringing these talented people into the limelight for everyone to enjoy.
Beautiful. As a non classic music listener I had to listen first to a handful of interpretations of the "Arabesque No. 1" to better understand Lucy's performance apart that she's blind. And I immediately could hear that she is playing this play so much faster than all the others, almost like a dance or a song to sing. I really like this interpretation.

Welcome to "the club" of lovers of this wonderful music from the 1700s and 1800s... and later, which I grew up on, as a son of a classically-trained pianist (Mom). There are many ways to play Mister Debussy's beautiful Arabesque, and Lucy Illingworth has absolutely Nailed it, here. And it is obvious that her piano tutor, Daniel Bath, is so Very proud of her here. How could he a Not be?
I think that Lucy and her teacher are amazing.

Amazing Beauty. So refreshing to see & hear in 2023.
She brings you to tears and a huge lump in my throat.
What gets me the most is she's so sweet talking about her mother while playing and saying all the nAmes of people she loves clearly but the point when she is saying mommy's here mommy's here the bond between her and wonderful lovely mother is clearly the most greatest thing that shes letting everyone know there seeing her while playing that she has a mother that loves her and she's adding it into her music while she's playing that got me just so into it hearing her and I had to re play it a few times just to see her saying mommy's here mommy's here that to me along with her great wonderful piano playing it just made that for me the best thing ever to see it thanks so much little lucy you are the best babe ever
