    When I listen to something of this magnitude, I just cannot get out of my mind, "How in the world could anyone on this earth actually sit down with pen and paper and write something like this... it is completely beyond my understanding." i mean Rachmaninoff had to hear this in his head - in complete detail of all that music can contain... and then write it down? Simply unbelievable - and all the other composers, as well!

    It was an open air concert which made it more difficult for the conductor and the orchestra to follow the nuances of his musical interpretation in terms of tempo, so he took the initiative and gave helpful clues for the orchestra with his left hand base in some crucial moments. He IS an excellent musician.

    As an a man of the visual arts I see that of course he has the grace and panache of movement to match his musical genius, his beauty is all brought together in his musicality. I'm no musician but I know beauty!

    Grace and "panache" of movement? The effeminate hand gestures and the mawkish facial "expressions" are enough to turn off many of his viewers, while at the same time enrapturing many others. And why on earth do you refer to him as a genius, just because he plays concertos that practically every professional pianist in the world has been playing for decades and decades? There are few words that are as freely thrown about as "genius". Besides this word, commenters in these pages can't get along without using words like "passion", "emotion", "dynamics", "phrasing", "rubato", and who-knows-what-else.

    I ended up sobbing for minutes after watching Lang Lang perform Tchaikovsky's 1st piano sonata. He totally channelled the composer, Mankind and human endeavour, and he did it better than Argerich (in 1975), Federova or Barenboim. They are all greats, but from here I'm clear that Lang Lang surpasses them.

    Lang Lang brings something new to the world of music, specifically classical, in his playing and interpretation of it. In ten notes he will let the audience know his life and to others the sadness and joy of it through his playing. We are the beneficiaries of this wonderful interpretation by someone who has experienced through his mother and father and his life so far the push to win by his father and the kindness and love of his mother which is transferred to his playing and that playing takes us to our emotions. He will make us laugh, cry, ponder, all with the light or powerful touch of his fingers and the magnificent expression of his face while he plays showing how he feels about the music from one bar to the next. It’s almost a secret what tonality he will choose in the interpretation of the composer’s original intent but more than that he also conveys a magical quality of his own that springs from his mind and fingers the concertos he plays are like nothing we’ve ever heard before.

    That's exactly the OPPOSITE of what a soloist should do! The latter's sacred duty is to acknowledge the audience FIRST! Then, go ahead with all the hugging, kissing, and hand-shaking. This getting up and turning one's back to the audience, no matter how often you may witness it, is simply bad form.

  • @cyc20976

    @cyc20976

    @@richardvolpe7664 I am not sure if that is what the soloist normally should do or not out of protocol, but Lang Lang did it right, because without the orchestra, there wouldn't be a performance, without a performance, there wouldn't be an audience, so Lang Lang did right to acknowledge the orchestra first and second the audience. Respecting the orchestra boosts moral and would benefit future performances. It should therefore be standard to thank the orchestra first to my opinion. Technically it would be not logical to turn to the audience first because applause can last for a long time, it would then be awkward to turn back to the orchestra and hug it out, because the audience usually expect an encore.

    What I admire the most, about Lang Lang is, the fact he has nothing to read in front of him, just his total immersion in his interpretations and expressions of very complex arrangements,… with an ease that can scare the most accomplished conductor. Sometimes, I wonder if he’s off to a musical heaven when he closes his eyes. A testament to the “impossibilities” we can unlock within the human brain!

    This is my favorite piece of music in the whole world ever.....every note of it....every passage is stirring and I have listened so often on You Tube and from a cd playing at home while I'm doing other things...especially on cold rainy days. I know it by heart....can hum along because I know what's coming next. Have several sections of this in modified piano music so a less accomplished pianist like myself could play them. Lang Lang's performance is mind blowing. He has this internalized in his soul and muscle memory. Some of the time he is not even looking at the keys. !!!! Rachmaninoff's music and style is so distinct I can recognize it when I hear any portion of his music playing. Here's something interesting, which I realized the first time I ever heard this well known pop song by Eric Carmen way back when... Eric Carmen "All By Myself". The verse borrows from 2nd movement of Sergei Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 2. (Carmen lifted melodies from classical music in other songs too.) Carmen: kzread.info/dash/bejne/ZJulw7V-j5yupbw.html (this video no longer available) TRY THIS ONE www.last.fm/music/Eric+Carmen/_/All+by+Myself Rach: kzread.info/dash/bejne/gIua1senc9HciLg.html Wikipedia's entry on this song says: "Carmen believed [Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 2] was in the public domain. Having found it was not, only after the record had been issued, Carmen had to come to an agreement with the Rachmaninoff estate. Early versions, therefore, only give writing credits to Carmen, but later versions also credit Rachmaninoff."

    My favourite piano concerto played to perfection. Wonderful dynamics on opening chords, equal to Rachmaninov himself or Ashkenazy....As for the second movt and that haunting theme - Lang Lang, you nailed it. Third movt powerful, played with clean crisp technique and marvellous expression, a real sense of the romantic. A beautiful concerto played by a master. Thank you thank you! ( Pity about the applause between movts though). I shall play this again and again. Very moving (in both senses of the word). Very demanding of the orchestra, forced to dig deep!
