When I was a child in the summer visiting my grandpa‘s farm. I really had no one to play with, so I discovered the complete works of Charles Dickens in their library during that summer. I read each and every one of them from cover to cover, and since then I have been hooked on reading and books. My grandparents gave me those books and I kept them until last year when I passed them on to my grandchildren. When you love books, you are never alone.

Reading makes me feel less alone. I'll relate to the protagonist, and sometimes feel seen and understood by an author, dead or alive.

I find delight and escape from reading. Also, learning of other personalities and times. The Women and The Four Winds by Kristin Hannah brought me into the hardships I haven't experienced and strengths I haven't drawn from.

Since childhood, I have loved to read. I'd hop on my bicycle and ride to the Public Library every week, especially in the Summer. Curling up on my bed with a good book transported me to other worlds. "Caddie Woodlawn" was my favorite from that time. These days, I enjoy the calming of all the Miss Read books, set in rural England, with subtle humor and entertaining characterization in the stories. Always so good to see you, Margaret! I pray you are doing well.

Here in Ireland on 16th June each year we celebrate our famous son, James Joyce, on Bloomsday. His story "The Dead" from his collection titled "Dubliners" is one of the best. Re-read it so often. Music was hugely important to Joyce; here, the National Concert Hall's Roisin Dwyer writes for Culture about its role in his work and life and celebrates the lesser-known musician and music lover. 'Strange, almost incredible as it may seem now to his admirers, Joyce was more intent on becoming a singer than a writer.' -Oliver St. John Gogarty Joyce had an excellent tenor voice.

I’ve gone back to reading books. I have long Covid so the need for rest has brought me back to reading paper books and I’m quite enjoying that at my afternoon rest and being in bed at night earlier. I loved that book too Margret. A Gentleman In Moscow. I just watched a mini series of this story, that was very good too.

I enjoyed this and and I read to know more. I just finished Lady Tan and Her Circle of Women by Lisa See. I learned about a real Chinese female doctor in 1467 whose book is available today. The power of having a circle of women is a key to survival throughout various stages of life in the 1400s or 2024. This book is just an example, but reading of a book that interests you will enrich your life, give you a friend, and you are never along. The saying, "You never go to bed alone with a book." Thank you for thoughtful blogs.

Thanks, Margaret 🎉 I love to read, but would feel guilty about sitting for so long. Learning that it's helping my brain is wonderful. I especially love well-researched historical novels. Colleen McCullough is a favorite. Most people know her story "Thornbirds," but she was a prolific writer. Also, Edward Rutherford is another favorite. I didn't enjoy history in school (wars), but a good novel brings the people's perspective. Thanks again! No more guilt 🎉

Reading has helped me with loneliness and being down at times, especially when I was a young woman away from family. And it still does for other reasons. Thanks Margaret.❤

I think my first love is books and a good story. I usually. Have two or more books from the library. It was very important for me to encourage my own children to read and provide books they enjoyed. Sadly I was teased and discouraged about reading as a child. But I did it anyway. Haha. I think reading probably helped me when my family moved often. Knowledge is priceless

I read to both relax and learn, and it is so good for my well-being. I live on my own but am never bored with all my wonderful books, and during difficult times escaping into a book has been very precious to me. Having read a lot of books also gives me self-confidence and lots of interesting things to talk about!

I hated reading at school and only started to read when I was 20 and working in Switzerland in a hotel. I shared a room with a girl from London who was really into Agatha Christie and feeling bored one afternoon in my 'zimmerstund' I borrowed a book and my passion for reading took off and have loved reading ever since. I read on average at least 3 books a month, more when I'm on holiday. I read every type of book from fiction, biographies and classics. oh and self help books too. I have read all the classics ones which we were supposed to read at school, Lord of the flies, Animal Farm and Orwell's 1984 which amazed me his view of the future taking into consideration he wrote it in 1948....I'll stop here because I could go on and on about my love of books I have lived in Italy for quite a while and although I haven't been to school here I'm really fluentnand have read a few books in Italian too the first one was 'The bridges of Maddison County' my daughter had it and I loved it. By the way I really look forward to your videos

Reading serves my desire to learn about other parts of the world. You can learn so much about a place by reading a book set in it. As you said, it definitely increases my vocabulary with new words I can often use in everyday language. It also offers me an escape from a world I may not want to deal with. I’m sometimes sad when coming to the end of a book because I want it to go on.

Yes, I read a lot. :) Mostly actual paper books but also Kindle and online articles. On the two brain hemispheres, one non-fiction book I just started reading is by Iain McGilchrist called "The Master and His Emissary." It's extremely interesting! The fiction book I'm working on is a huge low-fantasy tome called "Little, Big" by John Crowley (published in 1981). I was lucky enough to meet Neil Gaiman a few years ago and it's one book (the new edition) he's recommended to his fans. I agree that reading is a great activity for our brains, minds, and hearts. 🤓
