12 Strict Rules Synchronized Swimmers Have To Follow

Ойын-сауық

Women's Olympic Synchronized Swimming Rules Are More Strict Than You Could Ever Imagine. From 8 Hour Training Days To No Bling Allowed...

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The 2020 Olympics are right around the corner and the Team USA synchronized swimming team is looking polished and ready. But swimmers like Anita Alvarez and Mariya Koroleva didn’t get on the team by accident. They had to train hard and follow a lot of very strict rules to get where they are today. After learning about this sport, many agree it’s the hardest, most grueling water sport in the Olympics.
In order to compete for the gold, synchro swimmers must train for 8 hours a day, 6 days a week. Their workouts are intense, involving exercises in and out of the pool. They must always look their best during swim competitions. So they wear the best waterproof makeup they can find, usually from high-end makeup stores in Paris. But don’t let those pretty faces fool you. This sport is a battlefield under the water. At least half of all synchronized swimmers wind up with concussions. They had to make new rules to protect swimmers after they get kicked in the head, like not letting them get back in the water too soon. Gender discrimination is a problem for swimmers in this sport. No men are allowed to compete in the synchronized swimming events in the Olympics. But that might be changing soon. One tradition is still going strong among the synchro swimmers: hair gel. Swimmers put gelatin in their hair to get that perfect, slicked-back look. And it’s really hard to wash out. Here are some of the strict rules synchronized swimmers have to follow.

As a synchro swimmer I have many injury stories. We’ve had surprisingly few concussions (although one of my friends got kicked in the head and knocked out during our routine at nationals, she came to and finished the routine) but we’ve had a ton of pulled hamstrings. Between me and only one synchro friend we pulled 9 hamstrings in one year a few years ago. I also got a knee injury almost 2 years ago as a repetitive strain thing from the eggbeater, and then had complications from a surgery to fix that so have landed myself a disability called CRPS. I still swim though and would have competed at British Championships in a few weeks if it hadn’t been cancelled because of corona. Long story short, synchro completely destroys your body and can give very permanent damage, but it is such an amazing sport and nothing could make me stop

I did this sport for five years, where I went from novice to senior provincial team representing my city. It is really hard physically and mentally, and I can confirm that there are many injuries that occur in this sport. I nearly got a concussion myself because I was the base in a lift and the girl jumping off my shoulders did a backflip and landed on my head. I got lucky to just be dazed for a second. Almost had an underwater blackout happen to me while swimming in a heated pool by myself. Not taking into consideration that heated pools will knock u out 2x faster, I did a few laps of underwater presses. Something told me to stop but I continued to do one more. Half way to the end of the pool, an overwhelming calm came over me and my hearing started to fade. My instincts told me to stop and when I did I could barely make it to the side because my legs were numb and I could barely lift myself out of the pool. I sat there for about 10 mins trying to regain my senses. The crazy thing is that I was not out of breath and wasnt the least bit tired. I was literally seconds away from passing out. We had two guys on base die in a training tank doing exactly what I was doing and they BOTH blacked out and drowned. Never do any serious swimming without supervision

They are only responsible for giving their music with instructions to the "sound master" (whatever he's called in english), not for him being an idiot and messing it up. I was professionally dancing on shows for many years, I can't count how many times that guy either played something completely different, didn't start when he was supposed to, stopped accidentally in the middle or any other nonsense, despite the fact that he always had strict written instructions even with timing etc., even though we tried it all out at the rehearsal. It's NOT their fault, unless their coach personally plays the music.

It depends on the level you are in. Masters competitions for example(for us old ladies and gents-men can swim in non Olympic competitions) are a bit more forgiving. At a National masters meet a few years ago, one team had the wrong music play and they swim to the wrong music anyways for fear of being docked points if they didn’t jump in. Thankfully, there were allowed to swim it again with the correct music and I don’t think they were docked any points.

They should incorporate fancy helmets; make 'em part of their costumes, and save their brains. Edit: Please know that I understand helmets wouldn't actually be appropriate for this sport. This isn't a real suggestion, just a funny image that popped into my head when I watched this video. I'm a nurse so I want to save all brains, but as a former competitive gymnast and swimmer, I have to accept that helmets aren't appropriate for some activities, so I'll just do my best to help the folks who get hurt doing these things. *To the folks who replied, thank you, and I'm sorry about the misunderstanding...i totally get why you thought I was being serious. 😉Take care everyone!✌️💜😷

Synchronized swimming is also art and it is important to convey a feeling with everything so if the make up doesn't match the music it'll feel weird watching the performance. But as it was said in a comment it actually don't bring you a lot of point. Also the make up is very big and bright so you can see it from far away

as an ex-synchro swimmer, i didn’t realize how much effort higher levels had to put in, mad respect. Synchro is definitely a very difficult sport. My sister did synchro up until she graduated high school while i quit by middle school to pursue volleyball. For people who think that synchronized swimming is easy, watch the video the whole way through, think about painting scalding hot gelatin in your hair, the water slowly stinging your eyes and the hard work the swimmers go through to actually be able to be that good. With all of this, I really wish I wouldn’t have quit though, because you form an unbreakable bond with your teammates and coach, along with having so many fun and exciting moments with ups and downs along the way.

Heather Scott It really is! You have to support your full body weight, keep your balance, literally throwing people in the air, etc. You’re not allowed to touch the ground at all. I’ve been doing it for 6 years now and I’m still not even that good at it.

My daughter made the GB selection, but had to give up to do her A Levels. There is no proper support for UK girls. Other counties have dedicated schools where this arduous training is combined with study. I think it is one of the most demanding sports there is. Her legacy is confidence and amazing swimming ability.
