Women's Olympic Gymnastic Rules Are More Strict Than You Could Ever Imagine. From Wardrobe Malfunctions To Pointing Those Toes...

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo are fast approaching. With our Team USA gymnastics team blazing the way, headed by all-star Simone Biles, it’s a very exciting time to watch gymnastics competitions. Serious gymnasts must follow strict rules if they want to go for those gold medals. They must always look in control during their routines. Even if they make a mistake, they can’t let it show. Their hair must always be pulled away from their faces. They are only aloud to wear one signature piece of jewelry. Gymnasts use a particular product that has become a staple for all competitors to avoid a certain embarrassing problem with their leotards. They are not allowed to take breaks in between tricks.
They must commit to long practice hours in order to be at their best. A gymnast had better have her checkbook ready if she wants to appeal a judge’s score. It is important to always point your toes. If you forget to point your toes, wobble trying to catch your balance, or fail to move your legs into the correct angle, points will be deducted from your score. Only two gymnasts from each team can qualify for finals, and when they do, they always bring their own shampoo. Bright lipstick is a yes, while bright nail color is a no. There is a strict no-bullying policy. And be careful not to be too excellent. Every female gymnast must adhere to these strict rules if she wants to have a shot at winning the gold.

Jayden Sweeney no, it’s because she won a medal. She said it in an interview. She missed out on an AA medal in London on a tie break and was upset about it for 4 years. Also, if you think about it, OBVIOUSLY she wasn’t going to win, she had ZERO chance against Simone Biles.

@Fairy Animations I think they meant don’t bend your legs too early. As in keep them straight until you land. Some people bend their legs to prep for landing prior to touching the ground, and that’s incorrect form. Legs should bend as you’re landing, but not be noticeable bent in the air. Right before landing legs should be mostly straight but not locked (obviously this doesn’t apply to every skill) and then bend as you land.

I was a junior Olympian gymnast and quit about 3 years ago. Last year, I started having a bunch of problems with my joints, so we went to a doctor and he told me, "you're hurting because when you were doing all that intense impactful tumbling, it was actually injuring you, but because your muscles were so tight together that you couldn't feel it." Basically I was constantly injuring myself but didn't even know it until 2 years later. I don't know if I wanna put my kids in gymnastics

@@iBeFloe I’ve never even seen a competition outside of the olympics or worlds where they allow any earrings at all lol. I know my friend once got an exception because she had recently gotten her ears pierced and couldn’t take them out yet, but they were also super tiny non-flashy studs that were similar to her skin tone. This was also a very low-level competition, and she had to tell each judge at each event. THe next competition they didn’t let it fly though and she just took the automatic deduction on each event. Also-no makeup is allowed lol. At least not any noticeable makeup. No nail polish either. And I know some places require your hair to not reach past the nape of your neck too. The rules def differ where you are and your level of competition.

Ex gymnast here, I had to retire at age 12 because of an injury my coach inflicted upon me. I can't live a normal childhood and have had to miss out on so much. This sport is extremely taxing both mentally and physically. Anyway, we weren't allowed to wear any makeup or nail polish and I had a coach who fought to lower the score of a girl three times. No one liked her and she deserved it so it was great. I do miss this sport so much though.

The judges dont like it and I think they refer to it as cowboying or something like that. It's a bit of a cheat to get more rotation without needing to jump higher. It's like landing something with your feet apart. It's still great and you landed, but small deduction for making it easier for yourself and not doing the perfect form.

@@hayleysmith347 I can wear earrings for training as long as they don’t get in the way (studs or tiny tiny hoops that barely leave your ear) but in comp we’d def get deductions for having earrings. Makeup too! Unless it’s au natural~ type makeup, we’d get deductions. It confuses me how gymnasts can wear sparkly eyeshadow in international comp and be fine lol.

How do you really degrade excellence? The whole point of becoming better and challenging is to go beyond the limit. Biles was robbed of a letter. Eventually someone will learn and become better in the technique. I believe Biles moves are futuristic and can't wait to see more! 💯😊

The undergarment deduction was a surprise to me. My daughter is 2 years in competitive gymnastics in Canada. I wonder how close the rules are country to country and what level they start getting more strict with them. Something to look into for sure. My daughter is level 7 at 9 years old and in Aspire 1 here in Ontario, the Aspire is geared towards top athletes in the province, I'm guessing that would include more scrutiny with the rules. Thank you so much for your video. I have subscribed to your channel, i like your content, very valuable.

Hey The Talko- thanks for covering this! I was a competitive gymnast back in the day and I remember the grueling work out regimens (4 days a week for 4 hours). But you do what you gotta do to make it to the top. Did you know that to improve a gymnast flexibility, like getting perfectly straight splits, sometimes coaches sit on top of you while you're in the splits to apply more pressure, in an effort to hyper-extend your splits? It's true! Gymnastics is not for wimps!

That wedgie rule is just ridiculous. So if a gymnast gets a wedgie, someone else has to pull it out? Is that how that works? Or are they saying they must perform all future routines with the wedgie intact?! (I’m assuming they really have a back room they can go to to do it in, but still) it’s ridiculous.

You can fix it but not during a routine. They say it breaks character and stops the flow of the routine, which means you have to finish your routine with it, which can be distracting, I'm sure. However, once your routine is over you can adjust it, though idk if you have to wait till after you receive your scores or not.
