12 Steps of Recovery

The 12 steps of Recovery inspired by the 12 steps of Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous. Brought to you by The Watershed.
1. We admitted we were powerless over alcohol & drugs -that our lives had become unmanageable.
2. We came to believe that a power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity.
3. We made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of a Higher Power as we understood Him.
4. We made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves.
5. We admitted to our Higher Power, to ourselves, and to another human being the exact nature of our wrongs.
6. We were entirely ready to have our Higher Power remove all these defects of character.
7. We humbly asked our Higher Power to remove our shortcomings.
8. We made a list of all persons we had harmed, and became willing to make amends to them all.
9. We made direct amends to such people wherever possible, except when to do so would injure them or others.
10. We continued to take personal inventory, and when we were wrong, promptly admitted it.
11. We sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with our Higher Power as we understood Him, praying only for knowledge of His will for us and the power to carry that out.
12. Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these steps, we tried to carry this message to alcoholics and addicts, and to practice these principles in all our affairs.

The Baha'i Faith has hundreds of prayer passages that are suitable for believers in 12 steps. "Thy love, O my Lord, hath enriched me, and separation from Thee hath destroyed me, and remoteness from Thee hath consumed me. I entreat Thee by Thy footsteps in this wilderness, and by the words “Here am I. Here am I” which Thy chosen Ones have uttered in this immensity, and by the breaths of Thy Revelation, and the gentle winds of the Dawn of Thy Manifestation, to ordain that I may gaze on Thy beauty and observe whatsoever is in Thy Book. ~ Bahá’u’lláh, Baha’i Prayers

Ok, well I didn’t harm anyone, I just indulged in my addiction, so those steps about making amends were easy, since I didn’t have to, lol. So here I am, still indulging in my addiction, waiting for the higher power to save me. Its been decades of this and I’m still waiting on that higher power. You know, I’m getting the feeling that I actually have to overcome this myself, and no higher power is coming to save me, and that these 12 steps are a bunch of baloney and do more harm than good.

What's more 12 step meetings have been a daily routine of mine for 12 years, everyday. I was in rehab for 365 days, and also pursued many attempts to improve my recovery, including 2 years of pure chastity. If after all tht, it still doesn't work? Who are we really fooling?

But what is that mean? does it refer to like a religous thing, or is meant to be vague and open ended ? Maybe its not as confusing as im feeling... i duuno

I think this is something everybody should do. Not just addicts to drugs but also addicts to the impurities this world has bestowed upon us.There is nothing wrong with spreading love through honesty hard work and integrity. The universe is alive, there is a higher power and there is so much more power in purity than there is in dishonesty. Why not be what we were supposed to be, get in touch with this world we live in and understand that we are the evil, why are we fearing ourselves and everyone around us, why have we turned this society and this world into a dark and terrifying prison. Money is the addiction, sex is the addiction, bullying is the addiction.. Everybody is addicted to something. Develop patience and kindness through these steps. Understand that life is free, and doesn't last forever, so push as hard as you can till the sun burns out Love yourself and Love everybody around you Even if you disagree with me thats fine, do what makes you happy but be safe and be as smart as you can. take care of your life and guard it with all your power.

@ Dennis Winn . Hey guys, being ' Crybabys' is something we are educated strongly against. Self-pity is one of the most destructive parts of being an addict. And so Dennis Winn that was a very real and valid comment to make. The 12 steps can sound quite ' God ' like and 'cultish' but the steps have nevertheless helped millions to recover. Something that is often emphasised in meetings is that we can disregard ' God', 'Higher power' and prayer altogether. It really is about surrender, admission and acceptance that we have lost control over our lives due to addiction. So turning our lives over to a higher power could be completely self contained, bringing in another person e.g a friend, family member, or professional, and creating an inventory ( often this includes writing a life story to identify the reasons why we are/ began using in the first place). A higher power can also be yourself as ultimately you may have a substance overpowering you, but you can be more powerful than the substance once you have the tools and experience to refuse it entry into your life. Another two important steps are making things right with the people we hurt, or settling outstanding resentment or anger towards individuals or a situation. A prayer can simply be a morning gratitude list giving thanks for everything we have rather than what we have lost. . The steps are really there to be moulded into what ever you want them to mean, and how ever you can make them work for you. AA meetings are a fantastic way of meeting people who really have lost everything ( families, houses, limbs, organs, their whole lives ) and learning how they have turned everything around to become exceptional human beings, living fulfilled lives, and are now helping others to achieve the same .Hope this helps, Michael

First of all your grammar and spelling could use some help....I'd like to know how many meetings you've been to. How much have you studied AA or CA or NA? Do you know why it doesn't work for some people and why it changes others lives for the better? What qualifications do you have to tell someone that these programs of recovery do not work? Lastly, this is not a "psychology, it's a program of work and dedication. I hope you can educate yourself on its merits in the future.

That's all very well, if you have the fortune or misfortune to survive yr sponsor to tht step. Many ppl with deeper emotional, social dysphoria, and most over high functioning autism, have their recoveries sabotaged by their very oqn sponsors who feel emotional powerplay has greater importance than the spiritual well-being of their sponsee. Remember, with Machiavellian precision, you can unburden yrself from the difficulty of addicts by manufacturing situations wherein the sponsee will definitely fail. I can say this very confidently for if only KJ took care of her character defects instead of being calculative in forcing me to choose between recovery and my daily bread, for good or bad, it was never completed and deprived potential at the height of its monentum. How is that blessing to be fair in anyone's annals of good fortune.

One liners like ready to remove all defects of characters ignores the complex process by which some ppl with defects not necessary from their characters hve suffered under the defects of less responsible ppl who use recovery to abuse others. High Functioning Autism hasc made me bait for ppl with hidden agendas in recovery. Not many ppl think abt addressing sponsor infallibility. Why must step 6 be targeted at sponsees? Why can't it tke social dysphoria into acct for how those with co-morbidities to find authentic relief? Where are all these inner, detailed and empathic considerations? Who needs tht when one line says it all? And it is easy to do our bit in recovery, because it is really abt what we can spout verbatim from the 12steps without ever knowing what lived experience around it was like. 12steps does not tke into acct neurogical differences. Because in the 1930s, where was autism?

It would mean more if you brought you here, not someone whose approval matters, for recovery to take shape. If sb else brought you here, tht means whatever effort and strides made in recovery will be accredited to him. Where does tht leave you when all is not rosey, and recovery goes downhill almost instantly, then. When there is nobody to please, there is nobody to blame.

When has the 12 steps ever addressed addiction ? In my experience, never. 12 steps are all there to cater to the unseen 13th step, the ability and enjoyment as well as legitimate power to manipulate others into a power game filled with subtle abuses and rejectivity of human worth as it stands at the individual level. It is not really about getting addicts out of addiction, but identifying human beings by their flaws, and subjugating their will, piecemeal. My challenge is wht can't sponsors stop wasting other people's time with shaming, and start continuing the essence of the big book. Work 1 step a week till 12 is over, don't put your addicts to a test of commitment. By tht alone, many have died due to other mental health issues. If the 12steps work, work it! Can we afford to lose addicts to relapse? What is more important? Other people's lives or the majesty of the sponsor's ego?
