There are two ways you can travel across the sea. You can either take a plane, or you can take a boat. Planes might get you there faster, but if you want to enjoy the scenic route, you jump aboard a ship! A well-made ship can stay afloat for fifty years or more, and when they're retired, they usually go to a breaker's yard to be taken apart with dignity and respect. Not all ships make it that far, though. Some of them end up being abandoned, each one of them with a story to tell!

There's also the SS Selma, another concrete ship in Galveston Bay. She struck a jetty shortly after launching, and was towed to a sandbar, and is still visible today. I always used to look for her while taking the ferry, as I was fascinated by the idea that a ship made of concrete could float.

I really love looking at abandoned places/things like shipwrecks. It's just so fascinating how it looked then and now and what happened to it. Big example: the titanic my favorite shipwreck. How it split into two and how Stoopid the captain and creators were to not put more lifeboats on and to not listen to iceberg warnings, and how if the titanic would have hit the iceberg head on, it most likely would have survived since that would have only hit 1/2 watertight compartments. Also all the pictures underwater it just looks so cool, but the stern got the rough end of the deal. (Sorry this is long)
Now I’m just getting ready for the weekend
Well known shipwrecks include the catastrophic Titanic, Britannic, Lusitania, Estonia, Empress of Ireland, Andrea Doria, or Costa Concordia. There are also thousands of wrecks that were not lost at sea but have been abandoned or sunk.
I have snorkelled in the shipwrecks of Tangalooma..... absolutely majestic and such an experience 😍

I like how seemingly every concrete ship ever constructed became one of these weirdly immortal wrecks.
I’m surprised the Ghost Fleet of Mallows bay isn’t one here. It’s on the Potomac and it has over 260 warships. It’s the largest sunken fleet in the Western Hemisphere
TSS Duke of Lancaster was painted black as she was going to become a zombie themed experience, but that fell through in 2019. As of 5/7/2020 there was talk of it becoming part of a tourist attraction, featuring berthing for houseboats, a fitness boot camp, water sports and other activities.

Another interesting abandoned ship is thd Royal Iris. It was one of the two “Ferry ‘Cross The Mersey” ships in Liverpool. The Beatles performed to the passengers on their way to fame. It was taken to London years later, where plans to restore and use it were abandoned. It’s still in London, abandoned except for squatters living onboard, listing atop a sand barge, with water pouring in a hole in its hull during high tide.
The Lancaster has good news as it is being reopened for special events in 2021 this year. Love this ship. The ship is moored at Llanerch-Y-Mor Mostyn in North Wales.

I went on a detachment to Iwo Jima which for anyone who doesn't know was a WW2 battleground between Americans and the Japanese. Tiny little island in the middle of the Pacific between Guam and the Japanese mainland. There's a beach on the southern side of the island past the invasion beach and mount suribachi with multiple shipwrecks, I think they were Japanese cargo ships, they resurfaced as water levels dropped due to volcanic activity. It's extremely chilling to see these concrete goliaths broken into pieces and washed ashore, especially since I am a sailor myself.

The Memorial needed repairs, not the ship, if you want an interesting fact, look up how long it's leaked oil, and how much longer they think it'll leak oil. If you get a chance go in person, well worth it. The air base hanger doors still have bullet holes from the attack.
