A few notes regarding your tips! Those magic eraser sponges are generically called melamine sponges. That might help people find them more cheaply. Baby oil is just scented mineral oil. You can generally get a larger bottle of generic unscented mineral oil for cheaper than baby oil. And for you personally since you've said you don't like a shiny finish on your paintings, mod podge does make a matte formula!

You can go to just about any dollar store and find baby oil there actually. That's where I purchased mine. I also use it as a clay softener because I'm not paying Polyform $5+ for an eyedrop sized bottle of clay softener.

@The Curly Q I take things at face value in text posts... With the "?" I saw it as a query, not a 'reply' (my original post was meant to be a helpful list, not seeking a reply per se)... Please know I in no way meant any implication as to your intelligence. I was only responding to the apparent question. It seemed you were either asking why i uses daub, or what did daub mean. I almost (and possibly should have) included a thank you to you for correcting me, but i was concerned that you or others seeing it might mistake thAT for sarcasm. But I am grateful that you pointed it out. I do enjoy words and opportunities to strengthen my vocabulary. ^.~ (my small thank you these days is to share with folks ...if you or anyone you know enjoys nature and wildlife, check out "WildEarth" on KZread. They present an interactive, in real time, Live stream of a guided safari bush drive from a game reserve in South Africa. For the toothbrush thing I'd suggest that you cut up a sponge and put it at the end of the case where the tip of your pencils are facing. This way they won't even hit the hard plastic shell, instead they'll hit sponge and I think that could help as well?

  • @selenieaned1829

ArcZeroes Ahh I've done that before and it works really well. When the pencils hit the sponge the sponge absorbs the impact and protects the tip of the pencil.

When I bought a couple calligraphy brushes in Japan, they had these little see-through plastic tubes at the brush end to protect the hairs. So I've thought, if you get drinking straws, cut a piece of it and stick your brush in it, it should do the same thing. Then maybe tape it on. The end of the drinking straw should take the hits for your brush. Standard straws should fit normal pencil size pencils and small brushes. Larger straws are usually sold in smaller amounts and more expensive because it's not the standard thing, but they exist too.

I hack your hacks! -Baby oil is just mineral oil with scent added to it. So, if you don't like the baby smell, you can get straight mineral oil from the pharmacy. -PVA glue (Elmer's white) mixed 50/50 with water functions the same as ModPodge, but cheaper. (In high school, back when dinosaurs roamed the earth, we used hair spray to fix pencil drawings.)

One of my favorite hacks is using Murphy's Oil Soap. When I do Gelli Prints, my brayers can get coated in acrylic paint after awhile, no matter how I roll them off. Soaking the rubber brayers in the Oil Soap for a few hours makes the acrylic layers peel right off leaving the brayer like new.

A hack I love to use when I'm painting with acrylics, which REALLY slows down their drying out: Using a large dinner plate as a palette, place on it a couple of squares of good-quality kitchen roll, dampen them well, then place a piece of baking paper on top. use this as your palette. Try this, it really works! And if you use something deep instead of a flat plate, you could also cover with cellophane if you want to pause and go back to painting later (this is messy on a flat plate because the cellophane comes into contact with the paint).

I like your tips and your personality! What I use for palettes are the white styrofoam trays that meat comes in (washed, of course.) The raised waffle grid keeps paint from running where I don't want it, but they're low enough that I can mix two colors on purpose when I do want it. The bright white background also lets me see the color more clearly.

that keeps in water and deforms bristles. the little brush protectors you get when you buy brushes are only intended to keep them in shape from the manufacturer to the store to the artist, and then they should never be used again in any context. doing this is just recreating those, which will over time weaken the bristles and any sort of adhesive used to keep them in the ferrule. all your brushes need for protection is a good brush wrap after drying thoroughly - ideally lying on some sort of rack or hung upside down so the bristles point towards the floor.

I didn't miss any points. I'm a professional artist as well and those individual brush things will end up harming your brushes, especially because they don't allow air circulation for adequate bristle drying. Just use a damn brush roll. They cost less than $5 USD and that's worth maintaining your brushes for longer.

@@necrofuturism Wow...aren't you the snooty one. Well, ms. professional, I know several "professional" artists and unlike you, all said the straw idea was excellent. It's not as if you're storing them for years on end. Also, in your triggered state, you neglected to include a link for a decent wrap for under 5 bucks! www.jacksonsart.com/en-us/jas-7-oz-canvas-brush-roll-22-5x12inches?___store=jacksonsart_us&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIg6-XkJ_X4QIV1bfACh0VmgRqEAQYECABEgI3LfD_BwE I'm just a bohemian artist, though I do sell world-wide, I won't waste my money on useless things such as wraps if there's something cool and crafty -- such as pieces of straws, hotmelt glued in a shape conducive to my wants. Sorry, but some of us aren't "professional" and can't justify spending (read:wasting!) money on junk that a too judgemental professional claims is required. Sheesh.

Hipps Msp another one that's really similar and also uses the spiral notebooks is if you want it to bed extremely secure you can get a thin hair tie, push the end through one side of a spiral and out of the other side so that one end of the hair tie is at one side of the spiral and so on and push the brush handle through both ends and put the book vertically like you would in a bookshelf and that way they're less likely to fall out if something tips off of them 😊

During school since I don’t have access to solvent or baby oil for school projects I actually use hand sanitizer to blend my colored pencils because though it doesn’t blend as seamlessly as solvent it’ll get the job done and is commonly found in most classrooms Just a quick tip for my fellow student-artists smile 😊

I have another baby oil hack. There was once a contest in our school where we had to use oil pastels only. I wasn't really good in that medium so I tried scraping bits of it and mixing a little bit of baby oil. It became like paint and I was able to use it with brushes. It make the colors less vibrant though in my experience. Also, I wouldn't recommend using it on a really thin paper. This hack isn't really for a final piece but I think it would work okay if you just want to practice and don't want to waste much paint.

For a pallet I use thin scrap pieces of card board with a glossy side. It never absorbs paint and it works really well. It's also like a paper plate without the curve so it's reusable.

I've got a hack. So.. when I use my markers I usually stain something that isn't supposed to be ( because the markers bleed on my paper) . This only works on smooth surfaces btw. When I stain my desk and it dries I can't get it off right? Well then I do it on the stain again and grab some toilet paper, or a mop or whatever it is you clean with, and just rub on the stain. It usually works, just on smooth surfaces tho

try to use alcohol. Maybe rubbing alcohol or hand sanitizer . Put that on some paper towels or cotton pads and it should remove the marker easily. Because the markers are alcohol based and the only thing colouring over it is doing is just that, the alcohol in them is lifting the old colour.

I'm a student artist who goes to *ugh* public school (although I most likely will be going to an art school for highschool, I'm going into 8th grade) and I just recently got a new kneadable eraser for my birthday on June 1st, along with a bunch of microns, new nice mechanical pencils, watercolour markers, new sketchbooks, and a whole bunch of other stuff including two boxes of art supplies that my art teacher gave me bc she favoritizes me and she didn't need it anymore. Anyway, I had taken my kneadable eraser to school because I use it as a stress relief thing as well as for my art, and one of my microns, one of my pencils, a new sketchbook, and two white gel pens. I started to take classes in my school's office because of my anxiety towards the end of the year, so I was basically just drawing during most of the day. Nobody really cared because they knew I had finished all of my work. A teacher had come to me and asked me to do something for her because she knew I was available, so of course I happily said yes. I left the room for an hour, and when I was finished I had gone back. Stupid me trusted one of my art "friends" to watch my expensive art supplies, and I came back with one of my white gelly rolls and my kneadable eraser missing from the table where I had left them. Turns out she had hidden the gel pen, which I found under her books, and I have yet to be given back my kneadable eraser which I had just paid $4 for three days beforehand. Teaches me never to have nice things I guess.

  • @humblemarty

This is awesome. When I was doing ceramics for 4-H the thing they suggested we try to keep brushes bristles straightened out was egg yolk. I'd never heard of using hair gel to do that. I'd just take a little dish soap to put on the brushes after I get done with them for the day since, I've had less hair products on hand since my hair cut. Another painting hack a friend of mine showed me is if you get one of those soft, big, ceiling tiles from the hardware store then back it with something solid like cheap press boards and glue it all together before you gesso. The gessoed result is a paint canvas that is cheaper than buying the pre stretched canvases at Hobby Lobby. Those were things I wished I knew during art school.

  • @cherrycordiaI

I highly recommend replacing the baby oil with odorless mineral spirits. It's rather cheap (you don't have to get a large bottle or a high end brand) The oil can seep through the paper and ruin anything underneath. It also evaporates in seconds and has no smell once it's dried up. I personally recommend using a small white ceramic or porcelain plate as a palatte. It's great for mixing since the water doesn't bead up (thanks to surface tension) on the surface. You can still use cling film to preserve your paint as well. The only drawback is that you can't divide the colors. Though that can be remedied by using a plate with built-in dividers. IMHO sticky tack works even better than most kneaded erasers. Tip for the modge podge as a sealer: After you've brushed on a layer, go over it with a lightly dampened sponge to get rid of the brush strokes.

So... yes and no. When you use a solvent on a crayon or colored pencil, it dissolves the wax and allows you to move the pigment around. When you use mineral or baby oil, it also breaks down the wax and allows you to move the pigment. Probably because there's fat in wax. And fats dillute fats.

I think I just have a group of people who subscribe to me just to dislike them, I never get anybody give me genuinely good reasons for why they dislike them, and I wish they would because it might help me improve them for the future! 😂 I'm a digital artist too, perhaps I should've included some for that too?! 😊

Chloe Rose Art Yeah, that's exactly what was bothering me (even though it was mostly meant as a joke 😂), that people tend to spread negativity without explaining why, wich would be more like constructive criticism. I definitely love your videos though, you're always so genuine and funny ❤❤

FOR CHRISTMAS, I GOT TWO OF THOSE EXACT SAME ICE CUBE TRAYS FOR OVERNIGHT PAINTING PROJECTS. THEY ACTUALLY REALLY WORK. When you use a regular paint pallet (I’m using tempera paint), and use it overnight, the paint will just dry up. But the ice cube trays are AMAZING!

To prevent my paint brushes from getting messed up, when I'm done using them I rinse them out really well then put dish soap on them, shape them, then let them dry. This works really well but takes a bit of time. Also, you have to make sure to wash out all the soap before you use the brush again.

another nice thing about kneadable erasers is that they dont leave eraser shavings everywhere and if u don't want to completely erase something and just lighten it up, like shading, u can just dab it against the paper and it lightens it up

I thought you had a mic that theatre actors use, but it was actually your hair. 😂 Impressive and helpful video btw!

I find dipping the end of my colored pencil in a bit of vaseline also helpful to do the finished blend :)

I’ve also heard of my artist friends diluting mod podge even more with water and then putting it in a spray bottle. Then, they put multiple coats of the spray on their graphite drawings to seal them from smudges. I’ve tried it and I actually like it!
