Using common materials, you can make some pretty nice handrails. I like to use spruce 2X lumber and rip the components to size instead of purchasing purpose made components. This allows me to get dimensions and scale to suit my liking. In this case, ripping the pickets to 1 3/4 inches. Additional components such as capping the rail with a 1x4 and trimming the edges with shoe molding turned upside down are simple ways to dress up this simple rail. You can also use beaded screen trim to cover the lower joint between the bottom-most 2x4 and the picket assembly. Small details like this make things more "architecturally considered" and less DIY. In the end, the rails will get caulked and receive a coat of solid stain. Up next is finishing the rails down the stairs, shingles, gutters and paint.

That dear, brave little house - just purely functional at first with no real affection or care shown to it. Now it's like a butterfly emerging - it will be a real credit to you and a definite star in its street. Well done.

Something about you wearing a dress shirt to build a porch says a lot about your character, work ethic, and quality of work. I’ve noticed that you’ve only worn a sleeveless top once or twice but other than that, you’ve worked in a dress shirt every time. Kudos to you - I think you’re doing an awesome job and I can’t wait to see the finished product!!

Dress shirts are actually wonderful for hot outside work because they can be lightweight, the sleeves cinch so they are out of the way, and you don't get sunburnt, and don't have to worry about bugs. I like wearing dress shirts (old ones) for this reason when I garden.

The porch looks great, love how you made the slats instead of purchasing them, a way cheaper option, and better built in my opinion. That is going to be a great home for somebody, hopefully you will get long term renters in there that take care of it. Beautiful place. (Saw the rack on top of the truck in this video, very nice touch to the truck and the shell on the rear, makes it a very practical truck now)

just great!!, LOVE the new porch. (our "cheap" house is really coming along, we've painted all the rooms except the laundry room, gutted the kitchen, power washed the house and garage, installed new exterior doors front and back, cleaned all the rain gutters, refinished the hardwood floors in both bedrooms and living room, (never again!, way too much work for this old man), installed new laminate flooring in kitchen&laundry room, got all the new base cabinets installed today, should have counters and uppers done by weekend!) I'm taking the day off tomorrow. We are waiting for 2 new garage doors that we ordered, and finally, having a new furnace and central A/C installed the third week in August. Thanks again, for the inspiration to do this!!

Well, I got through the entire build so far. You should really add storm doors to the front and back door. Also shutters to the front and side windows would really give the house curb appeal.

Also, shared your videos with a few friends that share the same type interest. They are now going to watch all of your house videos from the beginning. Is the tiny house still a plan to finish? I know you have a ton going on so I know your focus is on the things that make you the most. The tiny house could work for an AirBNB since you do income property.

What are you planning to do with the tar-paper overhang? Might I suggest some cornicing on the underside lip, so that the tar-paper wraps around and looks a little neater? It would also stop the porch from requiring a recovering prematurely. That porch looks quite professional. In my opinion, the pitch is just right, it makes for two very nice spots to hang hanging baskets imo.
