Seal Skinz rock! They also make thinner ones to use in the summer. We have both. We just picked up the Klim Adventure GTX boots for social riding to replace our 6 year old TCX’s. But for heavy trail days.. we wear a full mx boot. Her the Sidi Crossfires and myself the SG-12. Side note on the knee braces. I fractured my tibial crown wearing the Leatt X-frames. I don’t fault the brace. I hit a rock with my heel when I deflected hard and it shoved my tibia into my femur. Learned that they protect from twisting.. not from impacts coming from the bottom of your sole. Nearly lost the ACL. Lesson learned.. keep your damn feet on the pegs !

I picked up half of this for a dirt bike class. I’m a street rider, so I have completely different gear (total cost for my street gear was around $1700 between pants/jacket/gloves/boots/helmet). That said, I would have sweated to death if I hadn’t switched out, so it was definitely worth the investment. I swear, dirt riding is the mirror-image of street riding. It was so different I want to go back and take several classes on better ways to go about it. 😓

I saw man with broken foot (open fracture) with a street gear. I'm also a street rider and I'm decided to change at least my boots to the off-road one (Sidi Atojo). They are too warm for summer, but I think that health is more expensive that comfort.

@@illiah6383 I meant more the upper half. It was a cold day, but working so hard through the trails had me dumping sweat after about twenty minutes. I picked up an ADV bike, but it’s halfway across the country, so when I go back for it, I’ll have to plan to get the rest of the dirt-specific gear. I borrowed the rest of what I needed from the school to Get through the class (I already had a dirt specific pair of boots, knee pads and helmet).

Thanks Bret, Big fan of Mosko Moto gear and layering. Transitioned to kit like yours last year and never regretted it. My new protection saved me. I am convinced I would not be riding anymore if I didn’t have it after hitting a deer last year!

I do a blend type version. MX below the waist with SIDI Crossfires knee pads and hip/thigh/tail bone girdle (Leatt). ADV above. It's nice to be able to walk in to somewhere and simply take off my jacket.

Thanks for showing your setup. It's sinking in that my street gear really isn't suitable for me as a beginner trying to figure out and test my limits off-road.

I had a bad fall last summer. My adventure jacket was indeed not enough protection. Since then I have always been driving with this type of equipment. The fall happened through a small sharp rut hidden under grass. Maybe one day you can make a video about this? Big ruts are not a problem because you can see them, it are the small ones that I'm unable to master 🤷🏻‍♂️ Great videos, keep making them!

I like that you show drops. Off road drops happen. Just pick it up and keep going. I am also a big proponent of riding gear. I can not afford expensive stuff BUT I do find good equipment to save my parts from staying on the trail. I grew up during a time, when not racing, about all you had was a helmet, leather jacket, boots and gloves. Many stitches and years later I have a riding solution for about every terrain. I have enough metal in my body from cop work to open a small hardware store. If I go down it sounds like a soda can full of rocks. Still, great job in one showing everyone drops and everyone needs protection. I feel like a knight getting ready but love getting up off the ground in one piece. Another great video! Excellent job. Love my Tech7 boots, but they are NOT waterproof by any means. Waterproof socks next on my list.

I am three days post-op for surgery on a broken collarbone. I was riding on a jeep/Forest Trail in a soft Sandy section when I hit a semi buried fallen tree. I was wearing the Leatt fusion 3.0 body armor. I initially liked the idea of the integrated neck brace with the body armor. All being one piece. But I think the force of my shoulder hitting the ground and my body weight pushing on the body armor caused the collarbone break. I think I’m going to look at what you are wearing. As two separate pieces. I don’t believe I would’ve had the same result had I been wearing two separate pieces. I also wear the Leatt knee braces and elbow pads along with the tech 7 boots. Thanks for sharing.

Smaller ADV bike, crash less. Ride slower, crash less violently. My old man safety tips. On solo ADV adventures, a satellite based GPS emergency communications device, worn on your person, can be a life saver.

One extra protective device for me has always been an athletic supporter with cup.

Glad this video was made! I recently started riding a 790 having previously ridden a sports bike with leathers. I found the lack of protection in adv gear frightening- I dont know how people are comfortable riding in just that. So I did a lot of research and thankfully came up with a setup similar to what Bret recommends in this video even though i felt kinda stupid at the time. Though I found some of that research difficult because a lot of hybrid products are coming out to cater for that more and more blurred line between mx and adv riding and I wasnt sure if they suited me. For example: knee guards vs knee braces and Alpine stars Corozol boots vs full mx boots. I’d love to know exactly if there is any real world difference by way of a review

here's a real-world review for you: i started with adv gear and adv bikes before getting into enduro bikes and enduro gear. i broke my finger in Toucans (which are a top of the line adv boot, better in every way than Corozol), i'm sure my Gaerne SG12 would have no trouble dealing with this since i dropped my bike on my foot many more times with it with no problems, it's rigid thick plastic on the top of the fingers and doesn't have any flex at all there, unlike all the adv boots i've ever seen. My buddy had the same injury in his Sidi Adv boot, after a single looped wheely on an 110kg enduro bike, not even a 210kg behemoth adv bike. i am lucky my knees still work, but since then i have so many times gotten into a situation where i would have damaged it due to compression or extension when you get your foot stuck in something or land hard on it if i were still wearing adv pants or even just a basic knee guard, and my knee brace worked perfectly. yes it's expensive, but you can get entry level dirt gear for cheap, except maybe knee braces. forgot to mention - i am now much more comfortable pushing my 790r, thanks to both the dirt gear and real enduro bike practice and skills it helped me develop; i didn't even realise there was so much i didn't know how to do properly after years of on-road riding, like using the suspension consciously, body position and balance, clutch control etc

One piece of protective gear you forgot was wrist braces. I've got some cheap carpal tunnel ones which have worked for enduro rides. However, you may want to move up to more serious protection. I got a prescription from my doctor to purchase a pair of ALLSPORT DYNAMICS hard wrist braces. Getting the right glove combination can be tricky, but it is worth it. Especially as you get older and have more wrist fatigue or cramping.

Glad you stopped where you did and didn't go any further lol. Love the fact that you endorse the safety gear unlike some people I know who think they're invincible. They like to buy tough off road boots, a helmet and hardcore gloves which is great but then they just have a bunch of lightweight breathable clothing to keep cool. There's no knee, hip, back, chest, coccyx, elbow or shoulder protection and they say they can move more freely and control the bike so they don't fall off, hence no protection. Keep up the good work.

Well they only need it when they crash. I don't plan ahead that well 😉 Of course I wear ADV gear offroad alot. When I know I am taking chances I gear up more but the truth is we never know when a bad fall/crash will happen.

I like the Mosko Surveyor pants and jacket, Workhorse Jersey. For armor, Knox MK3 Jacket w/ chest protector, EVS 4.0 neck brace, and chest protector. Bohn Body Armor Adventure Pants w/ short knee pads by Leatt 3DF Knee Guards 6.0 instead of the shin armor fitting into the boots. Tall boots are comfortable, and the longer shin-padded knee guards don't fit my boots. Leatte 3DF Elbow Guards. My gloves of choice are the Touratech Guardo Desert. Fantastic gloves! 100% goggles. I'm set.

I purchased that same Leatt HD PRO 5.5 because it has wrap around protection for your ribs somewhat . Don't have braces yet for neck or knee but I will add those as I get ready to go on a true adventure next year . From the foot up I have Falco Avantuer boots . They are fairly stiff have a metal ankle wrap around protection deal that will help if your bike falls on you or something like that plus it isn't floppy . Your heel won't get extended and the shin is well padded with hard armor also . I have the 2018 version and I can get the soles redone when needed , the new ones you can't . Next is Fox Titan Race knee/shin guards . They tuck nicely into the boots . Under that is a pair of long socks then Terramar silk bottoms . Over that the Klim padded full length stretch bottoms , has tailbone protection but they aren't as padded as yours , hmm might have to grab those too . In my area I can use the Badlands Pro pants all year and I always have the panels open so they breathe well . Okay next is a polyester or some such sports undershirt then a cotton long sleeve shirt . Then on goes the Leatt 5.5 and Titan Race elbow guards . For summer I take the CE 2 rated back protection out of the Badlands Pro jacket and swap the level 1 pad out of the Klim Baja 4 jacket . Okay then a thin full head stretch cover that keeps the sweat off the helmet liner as much as possible and keeps my noggin warmer . Use earplugs on the Tenere because of buffeting , bought the Touratech tall windscreen and will install that soon . Still will use those plugs , deaf enough as it is so they think haha . So for gloves I really like Racer gloves , so comfortable and all the protection you could ask for . I use the full gauntlet most expensive ones that breathe in summer and the less expensive full gauntlet ones that are waterproof in winter . Those Knox sliders worked nice when my rookie ass tipped my Tenere over twice doing 1 to 2mph sharp turn arounds and just didn't straighten the bars out quick enough and being top heavy and me being a 2 year rider with 2500 total miles I couldn't save it . Klim Krios Pro helmet rounds out the gear and I wear all of it all the time with little variation . I love rolling off and laughing as I bounce right back up or just lay there laughing . Really want to take rider course with you or any similar instructor to learn better on and especially offroad techniques . Always get something out of your videos and a neck brace is going to have to be my next purchase . Do you use neck braces on the street also or just offroad ? I think when most of us get into adv riding we go through a cost benefit analysis, and end up buying basic adv gear. As I got better and started riding faster, I realized I needed better, more protective gear. I went from adv boots to Tech 7. I wear a Klim Rally airbag vest, I wear more serious knee guards (considering knee braces). Most of my gear is CE AA rated.

Always shutting it off at the most interesting part.

Man that looks like some fun terrain, I can no longer afford to get stupid after a 2 level spinal fusion. Trading my Super Ten for an FJR this Summer it sucks I can't do this stuff anymore.

Our kit is close to identical. Pity it took me years of trial and error to go MX boot, yup, Tech 7, mesh adv pants, knee braces, Leatt crash pants, hard armour up top or really soft armour, Icon fieldsport shirt and Klim mesh shirt or Adv Spec linesman jacket, with Adv helmet, with goggles and safety specs. My goggles are on a QS strap so when a visor or safety specs are better, my goggles sit at the back of my helmet. I'm nowhere near as quick as you on a big bike, so I trade off comfort in the upper body for protection. The Icon is so comfortable I have to check I'm wearing it!

Good info! I'm presently piecing my kit together and was in two minds about the neck brace. No I'm definitely getting one. I saw the Troy Lee Designs soft armour. Looks good. So far I have chosen Arai EC-XD4 helmet, Asterisk Ultracell 3.0 knee braces, Tech7 Enduro boots, Fox Legion Enduro pants & jersey, Five Enduro gloves. I like the upper leg/torso armour, that's a great idea! What brand do you have?

yea i was on a ride with someone who had adv boots he broke his footT_T. i also highly recomend the Alpinestar offroad boots very good and i am expert at crashing

That’s a pretty good set of riding armour. My only red flag would be having to take a poop midday!😂

so much for your Tech 7’s … I have the Tech 7 Drystars and had my front tire wash out in a smallish mud hole a little over a week ago. Well the boots I am sure helped when my DR-650 fell on my lower leg … but … I still ended up with a fractured left ankle. Left ankle swollen up to the size of a baseball on the left outside part of my foot :-(

Safety gear might reduce injury but it can't prevent it and at some point nothing will help

The Thor Sentry XP is En certified as well. Won't work with a Leaat neck brace. it is all inclusive. Front, back, shoulder and elbows.

Love your content. Can you do one of these every few years for new gear?

I ride a dirtbike on trails. I know protection is really important. But here in the Philippines where it is very humid, we wear just enough so we don't overheat. Buy yeah, adv bikes are way heavier I can't even imagine myself riding those bikes on trails, protection is a must.

I don't see why you would need the shin protection on the knee brace since your boot has it too. Maybe the brace is not offered without it? Love that you included dual sport in this video, I ride a 250L and have watched many of your videos. I think a lot of your techniques cross over to the dual sport realm.

Great gear review but worst strip tease ever! Seriously, great tips and I like the neck brace with chest armor. I had a neck brace and when I crashed, off road, it saved my neck but broke my collar bone. A good trade off but that one you have looks like it would be better and deflect over a wider area.

It's ironic been on a few rides of late wearing my MX gear (as I have over the past years) and been thinking I am the odd one out with everyone else in the ADV gear and thinking I should be part of the herd and buy some ADV gear, now I am wondering if that's why they slow down and are super conservative in the more challenging stuff and I just throttle up gently and push on through with a smile on my face. Looks like I will continue to go the extra protection (insurance) in lieu of comfort and reap the rewards (smiles).

Why do I have "Patricia the stripper" (Chris de Burg) playing in the background of my mind watching this? Keep up the good work!

I am currently nursing 7 broken ribs thanks to a driver out there on a suspended license. I am looking at the Leatt 6.5 with the best rib protection I have found.

I"d almost recommend going to a motocross helmet vs. adventure one due to the airflow if your doing technical trails in warm climate. The are cheap too so you won't be spending as much money as a dedicated adventure lid.

When I still had dedicated dirtbikes I did. The biggest issue is riding at high speeds to get to the trails

Hi Bret. Question- I own and wear the almost identical gear on the trail. When you ride on something "all day" like a BDR, do you wear all the gear? What do you skip? When you are on a lot of gravel or tarmac, what do you leave behind? Things like knee braces can get pretty uncomfortable by the 9th hour of riding...

I tend not to ware protective glasses while dirt/adventure riding. Have come off a few times at speed and resulted in new furrows in my forehead. I always ware goggles.

I realize this is an old thread, but your advice is always appreciated and as relevant as ever. Yesterday, I had a friend go down on pavement. Slow speed, training exercises, he grabbed a hand full of front break and that was that. Other than a bent ego, he took away a broken right wrist. I don't recall you speaking about wrist protection in this or other videos, but perhaps I missed it. Do you wear wrist protection? Can you recommend a particular type or manufacturer? The ones I considered are the current Mobius or the Leatt. Thank you!

Bret - What are your thoughts on airbag vests? Now that Klim and a few others have airbag tech with adventure/off-road mode, it seems reasonable to switch to those over the bulkier hard neck braces and back armor (most airbag bests have back armor included).

I wear a Helite Turttle 2 tether type air bag vest with back protector on my 2019 V-Strom 650 XT on a mix of dirt and paved roads. The air bag vest is hopefully supposed to support the neck when activated. I wear a lightly armored shirt too. Maybe I should spend more and get articulated knee braces. Also, I wear older Tech 3 boots. Shorts with hard hip and tail bone guard and type 2 elbow, shoulder and knee guards. It seems that a crash is a crash on dirt or pavement, and it would be best to always have the best protection.

Yes I’m a bit late in watching this but I do have a question, I’m a curvy Woman and I want to get into adventure riding I am loving your videos absolutely I’m out practising on my street bike some of what you’ve talked about but the gear that you’re talking about I would love to have I cannot find in my size I cannot find Adventure riding gear for a curvy woman please help😎

So, what's the compromise when on a long ADV trip and you don't have these equipment? Just keep it within limits?

What do you think about Airbag-vests like the Helite Turtle? Especially in addition to normal gear and everyday use?

I agree with all of this - but it's hard to tell a rider to spend $2K on gear and not that "better" bike they covet. This is an expensive hobby at the beginning - but this is the smart choice.

The old motto of buy once, cry once seems to be very true as a new rider! I'm starting on a smaller dual purpose bike to learn proper technique instead of learning the hard way, the joys of outgrowing the young and dumb attitude 🙈🤣

Hi Bret, Is it advised to wear a neckbrace with a riding back pack, like an OGIO Baja/Dakar back pack. Its really hot in India and a backpack with a bladder and some napkins are basic from a personal preference perspective. Also, neck braces cost alot here too so don't wanna regret getting one. Please advise.

Moveo no lover makes neck braces (Rev'it! Branded the Moveo brace) The Rev'it! Brace wins for convenience but mine is aging so I use it sparingly now since replacement parts are no longer available. Leatt is a better brace and was always my dedicated dirtbike brace

My Toucans are a good boot. Pretty comfortable for a motocross like riding boot.

i relegated my Toucans to light dual-sport and touring after i broke my finger in them when the 790 fell on it. dirt? only real enduro boot, i prefer gaerne sg12 but top of the line is very comparable across brands so pick the one that fits best. they are incredible, so much more rigid and protective you can't even compare adv boots to them, even the best ones like toucan

@@mikesbigadventures194 oh it’s a story alright! i was scouting TET Ukraine with the linesman, near lake Synevir deep in the Carpathian mountains. This was one third day of intense offroad riding, previous day we had to set up camp because we were too exhausted to push my 790r out of a bog. We managed to get his 640 out though, and luckily had enough water left. next day we are descending from the grade down to the lake, there is civilization near the lake so we’d be out of the deep woods finally. Everything is very wet and i struggle through mud with quite a number of tumbles, but we push on. We want to reach the lake for lunch, there is a small village there with real hot food. So finally when we are like 200m from the lake on the final descent, which is very steep and rutty with tree roots sticking out, and rocky and all the rocks are wet and slippery (kinda like river rocks, smooth) - we are going down and my buddy who is in front decides to stop. He has a lighter bike and is a better rider, and he stops to assess the best line down, he likes to go down as slow as possible. I however prefer to carry some speed to help the heavy beast, so usually i try to let him go all the way down before i follow. this time however i was following not expecting him to stop. it’s quite steep and slippery so stopping gracefully is hard. i do stop in time to not hit him, but i can’t maintain balance and the smooth rock under my right foot gives way and i slide out with the bike. the handlebar hits my toe on the right foot, painful as hell. this is downhill remember so basically the entire weight of the bike goes into this one single point of contact with the ground - handlebar on my toe. i didn’t have any painkillers (now i always take some) and the feet swole pretty bad. it was a challenge getting the bike down, luckily there were some cool Lithuanian (or Latvian?) enduro riders down by the lake that helped us. With a proper enduro boot, you don’t really feel the bike dropping handlebar first on your toe much, i tested it :)

i just want to add - this is not a freak accident. see for yourself how flexible the toebox is. my friend broke his toe when practicing slow wheelies (real slow, Jarvis style look it up) on a 110kg enduro bike. he was wearing some sidi adv boot, very similar construction materials and quality to the Toucan. the bike looped out and with most of the weight on the back wheel he tried to save it by trying to hold it by the handlebar, but wasn’t able to and it struck his right foot. so not much weight or force - but still enough to brake it. this is very common in enduro riding - after my accident i pay attention to this particular impact specifically and see it all the time with my riding buddies- luckily we all wear enduro protection so it’s never a problem (this is why enduro riders don’t notice how often this happens - because it never results in injury)

So how long does it take for you to put all of your gear on?

Good advice. Curious , might take a few minutes to stop riding pull off gear fast if the urge of a bathroom break hits you like real quick

i have a set of Tech 7 and it's a nightmare for me to find knee guards that would fit. I just can't close/strap the boot :(
