Enduro protective gear: armor, boots, helmets, neck braces, knee braces︱Cross Training Enduro

Спорт

From www.crosstrainingenduro.com Protective gear for dirt riding helps a lot with preventing or minimising injury, but there's a lot of debate about how far do you go? This includes, helmets, boots, body armour, knee braces, neck braces and goggles as enduro protective gear.

Let's start with what most riders see as the essentials: Helmet, Boots, Knee guards, Goggles, Gloves. This also applies as motocross protective gear. These enduro training vids cover many dirt riding skills and dirt bike techniques for improved off road riding. Cross training applies trials to enduro techniques.
HELMETS
The good news? Any helmet approved by a major helmet standard does a reasonable job of protecting you, yes even the cheap ones.
ENDURO & DIRT BIKE BOOTS.
Lower leg injuries are extremely common, we recommend get the best boots you can afford. These vids provide an introduction on how to ride dirt bikes with our 70 free training vids. Many of these riding tips come from Graham Jarvis, Chris Birch and other top extreme enduro riders to form the concept of cross training - a blend of trials and enduro techniques.
KNEE GUARDS. Some riders don't use these, but most of us see them as essential.
GOGGLES. These are a no brainer. The huge risk with wearing sunglasses is that stick or branch that wants to gouge out your eye.
GLOVES. Another no brainer. It can be worth having a bit of armour on the knuckles and fingers, especially if you aren't using a full set of handguards on the handlebars.
The rise of extreme enduro, endurocross and hard enduro events has led to cross training - trials skills applied to dirt riding on enduro bikes. Subscribe to this channel for endurocross training, enduro techniques and dirt bike skills.
Now what about the protective gear that many see as optional?
KNEE BRACES offer a lot more protection than basic knee guards. Knee injuries are extremly common with bone fractures, blood vessel or nerve damage and injury to four main ligaments. An excellent study revealed that proper braces halve your chances of knee injury.
NECK BRACES. There's a lot of debate around these due to so little information.
BODY ARMOUR
There is so much available here, but no research that I could find for offroad riders. What do all the world's best extreme enduro riders have in common? Almost without exception they are former trials champions who applied who have applied trials techniques to their dirt riding skills to tackle some of the world's toughest events - Romaniacs, Erzberg, The Roof of Africa and Hells Gate.
PADDED PANTS
Most offroad pants have some padding for the hip. It's a high impact area so the more the better. Some riders wear padded underwear too for extra protection.
So there's a basic overview of protective gear. I'll leave a space here if more info comes up as we do some more detailed vids. Ride safe, guys!

    Great Vid. I wear full armor jacket all the time. I have gone down many times, and each time get up thinking "I think that crash should have hurt", yet I am pain free. We have a saying her, "ATGAT" or 'All the gear, All the time' . spending the money on good gear is expensive, but is still less than a single hospital visit.

    I have no research about the advantages of wearing significant upper body and lower body hard armour, but I can say anecdotally I have now thrice fully rolled down, ass over tea kettle (twice with the bike), long rocky hills and all times emerged unscathed (I barely even had any bruises). The combination of my crap riding and lack of physical consequences of crap riding have made me a believer in keeping my soft doughy old lady body covered in plastics and foam. When it gets hot I have been known to go swimming or get hosed down in all my gear which is an effective way to keep cool when armoured up.

    I haven't looked lately but a few years ago there was pretty much no research for dirt rider protection. 🤔 Our group talks about it a lot as we bruise ourselves often in low speed stacks but overheat too easily wearing armour. It was interesting to note the doctors told me there was nothing that could have prevented my spine fracture when crashing downhill because it was axial loading down through the spine.

    @@crosstrainingenduro I do think to a great degree, the gear provides a placebo effect through a false sense of security...but I will take it. How are you healing up?

  • @crosstrainingenduro

    @crosstrainingenduro

    3 жыл бұрын

    I know a few guys are worried about the placebo effect when they put body armour on as they feel they can ride faster because they feel so safe. Logic suggests it must help though, if I lived in a cold climate I'd be wearing it a lot more! The back's going well thanks... it's still not 100% as it gets sore after two hours riding, and I only last that long if I keep my back very straight. Not noticing much improvement on this lately but hopefully it will disappear with time. 😊

    Good info! I just have a minor disagreement with the statement "don't wear a jersey on top of armor when it's hot". I have Leatt 5.5 armor which, unfortunately, only came in all-black (at least when I bought it). I wear a loose-fitting white jersey on top of it to reflect sunlight, and it's noticeably cooler that way. It would be better if the armor itself were white or grey, of course, but just wanted to note that a jersey *can* actually keep you cooler.

    Protection is the key no matter what you Ride, First day out testing my New KTM 350 XCF-W just getting the hang of the power this bike has and with in the first 30 min i thought I had it down! ha ha ha yeah right! I was just testing on 6 foot walls of sand at the river and Looped the Bike so fast I flew off the bike landed backwards head first, then felt neck jerked and shoulder crush on some monster rocks! I have a great go pro video on this and you can see the bike launch about 6 feet in the air and i"m doing a back flip.. i just stoop up walked back to my bike which was in the river and i didnt feel anything at all.. i had all of the gear on Thor vest, with attached arm protection and great book and knee guards. Point is that if i didnt have the pro per protection great I would have been able to ride again. Love your Videos and thanks for confirming.. I have the Leatt Neck brace..

    Great info, Barry. I have two questions I'm hoping you or another viewer can answer. Might sound obvious, but I'd appreciate a view from those who know: 1) what's the most likely cause/scenario where you're going to sustain a serious lower leg/foot injury? 2) what is a chest protector designed to protect against (and do you need one)? Helpful answers appreciated, cheers!

  • @crosstrainingenduro

    @crosstrainingenduro

    8 жыл бұрын

    +Rob McDermott good questions rob... far as i can see the only research that might give clues on lower body injuries will be either road riding or motocross riding based, so not terribly accurate for everyday dirt riding. chest protectors developed in motocross simply to take the impact of roost from riders accelerating in front of you, if you aren't in the habit of following faster/aggressive riders closely it's often not an issue. BUT some dirt riders say it has deflected sticks that otherwise might have jabbed them in the chest, and obviously can be handy if you fall flat on your face and go for a slide too.

    tekrider.com/ Great upper body protection, not just a chest protector. I wear the RPM vest which allows you to carry all of your tools and snacks up front (getting the weight off your back) and has a built in bladder pouch for water. you can get rid of a bag and fanny pack which is nice. but i still ride with a pack, I have a tendency to carry way to much stuff.

    Despite the best efforts of seriously talented & patient teachers, I seem to crash better than any else. So I wear a complete Forcefield upper body armour set, Crossfires, Forcefield knee armour, padding under my Klim Dakars and a 6D Helmet etc. I've broken the peak on my helmet but everything else is still in pretty good shape despite numerous low speed offs I've torn my supraspinatus tendon in my shoulder but the Forcefield armour saved me from likely broken ribs and a shoulder dislocation. I ride in the Uk so heat ain't usually a problem :) Even in July/August full armour plus an MX jersey is just dandy.

    I seriously wish I had taken injuries below the hips more seriously. Legs and feet are SUPER susceptible to injury while riding. I amputated a toe two years ago and just ripped up my knee a month ago. Thank goodness I always took helmets seriously. Scorpion is a good brand to check out for helmets if you're budget minded but want ECE or SNELL certifications. My scorpion lid saved my life in 2014. But buying the best safety gear is ALWAYS cheaper than the medical bills. After an MRI, doctor's visits, and bracing, I'm out about $2k and off the bike for four months. Torn PCL, sprained ACL, sprained LCL, and torn meniscus.

    +robin greig i'll need to research the goggles more robin, but i suspect fogging isn't so much an issue of good goggles or not, but humidity, the speed you ride at, and the way air circulates within the helmet/face area? and interesting point on the carbon fiber... if that's true then you have to think what's wrong with plastic then? are they just trying to look cool with carbon fiber?

    Aha, that is what I am talking about! (Paragraph four at 7:11). Throttle handle should be illegal :) on dirt bikes. Historically it came from road bikes and it was wrong not to do something else. I think at least of 3/4 throttle handle length should be solidly glued to the bar just like the left hand side. The remaining 1/4 can be the actual throttle control. So you could hold on firmly with three fingers at least. I think just index finger is enough to control the throttle. It also can (and should) be electronic (it is the 21-th century, gents). I actually tried this week grabbing the stem of control cables with one or two fingers and move the throttle with the palm. It is a little awkward, but easy to get used to and definitely feels more secure and stable Nick Z

    @eureka1512 You could do a thumb throttle, or if you still wanted a twist throttle, you could cut the throttle tube to your desired length then once the grip is on cut your grip just flush with the throttle tube so it can rotate.

    What are your thoughts on the Bell MX-9 MIPS helmet? It weighs in at 1.77 Kg's (3.9 lbs). You mentioned that safety wasn't until the helmets weight was above 1.5 Kg's. That .27 Kg (.59 lb) differences seams pretty significant. Otherwise, it has nice features and good ventilation.

    not familiar with the bell. as per the helmet vids, research shows weight only just starts to become a factor at 1.5kg but it really shouldn't be an issue until you are around 2kg or more.

    Great summary video! Thanks! I also get REALLY hot, so finding gear that doesn't insulate the heat is a big factor. I'd HIGHLY recommend the chest protector I use (Troy Lee Designs CP5955). It's got GREAT coverage (including shoulder/clavicle/biceps), is really well ventilated and is ultra comfortable. It fits nice and snug so could comfortably wear it under a jersey if one wanted to with out looking too much like Robocop. :) I've had a few offs during my DB 'career' and the armour clearly shows the damage that would have otherwise been my flesh (in particular the shoulders). Check it out.

    Cool. Yeah, the Zac stuff looks great for sure! It's a really solid integrated design. I imagine it would make the pack sit really solid on your back and heavily reduce it from flapping about in rough terrain. Looking at the V2.0 (if that's the new one you are referring to), it seems that doesn't have as much shoulder coverage as the TLD's one, which was a primary requirement for me.

    One thing to remember the Zac Speed isn't technically 'armour' so it won't have a CE rating. Apparently it would have weighed too much to meet the specs needed. But it is very sturdy and much stronger than your usual 'roost guards' that cover the chest.

    Thanks for the vid, guys. As far as helmets go, does anyone know of any independent research that compares helmet materials? I have a nice light weight Kevlar-reinforced carbon fiber helmet, but I'm wondering whether it'll give me more damage in a low-speed impact -- as standard materials are probably more likely to warp and crack in order to dissipate the energy.

  • @crosstrainingenduro

    @crosstrainingenduro

    8 жыл бұрын

    the foam does all the impact absorption, any outer layer is just there to stop the foam being worn away too quickly e.g. high speed slide down a road. as long as it complies the standards, what the outer layer is made of is largely irrelevant according to experts i spoke with... but 'kevlar' or 'carbon fiber' are very trendy at the moment for dirt bike helmets although i wonder if it makes any difference for dirt riding crashes. could be a different story for road use though...?

  • @cakeshoe

    @cakeshoe

    8 жыл бұрын

    Hmmm.... That's interesting. When you say "... as long as it complies [to] the standards, what the outer layer is made of is largely irrelevant...", it SOUNDS as if we could design and build our own customised helmets one day (so long as the outer part meets some standards and the padding is taken from a top notch helmet). After all, we love modifying and improving our bikes; why not our kit? You'd want to thoroughly test the design to destruction first, though.....in a lab -- not on a bike. ;)
