Yep use grease to hold them in place. Put one on top horizontally and then roll it over to the bottom by turning the valve, the grease will hold it in place, then put one on top. Release the valve spring and vu-walla you have one of them done. Nice job RK. Keith

Your right I just did my valves using this guide on the head bolts but got confused when only 8 are numbered. I have the exact same engine with a 9 bolt pattern tomorrow I will loosen and re tighten using the manual diagram. I got the exhaust valve keepers in using wire ties on the springs it worked out really nice using grease to hold them it took only one try! I thought that was going to be the hardest part but nope. Nice video series it was my first venture into valves I'm 66 yrs young.

One method i found that sort of works, but you need practice with it (like with everything, amairite?) is to stick two broken shards of a neodymium magnet on the keepers (one per each). That helps keeping them grounded. Once you're done, you take them out and you're set.

I've always used zip ties to compress the springs, get everything in place and cut the zip ties and pull them out. Done it on several engines that way. Wish I had the compressor tool though.

  • @aleblanc3547

Oh yeah, that valve spring tool is the ticket. I used two zip-ties on a little 3.5 HP, and even with the easier "offset washer" as a keeper, it was a booger bear. When I finally got it on, it wasn't due to skill as much as luck. :>)

Bubba, as far as the valve keepers, the best way is what ever works the best for you. I usually just use a tiny magnet and just loosen the spring compressor just enough to hold the keepers and install the inside first with the parting edge up & down then the outside keeper. I sometimes magnify the keepers as well. A little grease helps. also fully adjust the spring compressor to fit as well as possible. You're doing just fine, and at talking it in as well....lolol....Bob.

I still don't like the way that intake valve spring retainer just sits there. I'm wondering if that small hammered piece of metal you found in the disassembly was a valve keeper that had come loose. Nope! Did some more checking and it seems B&S used those type of valve locks on a bunch of their engines. Ya learn something new everyday.

  • @thehaze1972

I usually put both the spring and retainer in the compressor, then you can add one keeper at the time while holding the other one in place with the compressor/spring/retainer combo. But grease is also a great help.

When installing valve springs that use tapered locks (like on the exhaust valve) the spring and the spring retainer (disc on bottom of spring) are compressed as a unit. The locks inserted and the compressor expanded.

I use a magnet on a stick to get them in there and then I put a finger on the retainer and pull the magnet off. Practice helps, but there is no easy way that I know of. You were doing it right until you got to the keepers. A dollop of grease on the valve stem keeps the placed keepers in place.

Good job on the valves but reassembling a dirty engine is like taking a shower and putting on dirty underwear. :-) Cleaning it once every 32 years is not too often.

That started out as an easy field repair, by the time we figured it was gonna be a major operation it was too late and dark out to clean it!! We gave it a bath after it was all back together and running!!☺
