#11 How I live between 2 countries & the roof did not collapse.

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Exciting parts of the farmhouse renovation are happening in Italy. I try a new way to manage travel time between the two countries with a flight through Ancona in Le Marche turns out to be a great success. It feels like the grand plan for a life in the sunshine is coming together. The Italian house project is going well and I feel positive even though there is a huge amount of work still to do.
As the renovations on the small house in Le Marche, Italy, continue I am very pleased to find that there were no cracks or issues with the wall and roof following me fitting the new beam. I remove the remains part of the retaining wall to get a first feel for how large the new kitchen and dining are will be. The living space will be amazing! Cosy and relaxing with enough space to make it a very comfortable house and home through both summer and winter.
Living and travelling between two countries can take its toll and so finding an affordable way that suits the lifestyle and balance that is needed for good health is important. As I continue to try new routes and new methods, I try connecting flights which could make a huge and positive difference for me and how I manage the time between Italy and my home country.
This episode shows the relaxing side of the simple lifestyle that I am looking for as things all come together and go as planned.
Please like, subscribe and feel free to message me with questions or just to say hello. I do love all the messages and finding out where you are watching from in the world.Thank you for watching & Subscribing.

WHO AM I?
If you are new here, hello and welcome👋 My name is Richard.
I bought a small house in the countryside of Le Marche region in Italy. The house needs to be fully renovated and restored and I am planning on doing all the work myself. This channel will show your the real side to buying a house abroad before you retire and how I fit in the lifestyle and all the adventure that Italy has to offer while I work full time and live in England for most of the year. This is a long plan to build the life I want, in Italy, in the sunshine, ready for when I retire. I am 49 years old and have two teenagers to support.
I am a normal person that is new to KZread and have never taken on a project as big and as complex as this before. Step by step I feel confident that I can manage life between two countries, do the renovations and build the life and dream house in Italy.
PS: Some of the links in this description are affiliate links that I get a kickback from. 😊

It's incredible to find a channel like yours, and not really have a lot in common with you or what you do, except maybe the dream of what you are doing. And then getting so hooked on the progress and how you make the videos that I find myself checking KZread more often than I used to. Hats off to you, my friend! You are doing an excellent job and you have just the right attitude towards it. 👌👌

Hi @user-px3ks9ff1c . That is the challenge - trying to do some driving and some flying while keeping the costs down. If organised and planned ahead, the flights are very cheap. It is the car hire costs that are the headache - that is why I drive sometimes.

Great work, Richard. I admire your attitude. Just a suggestion for the kitchen (if I may). Think about placing the sink at the window, rather than in a corner at the back, if the room allows for it. Also, placing the plumbing through an external wall might be less complicated. From a woman's perspective, doing dishes in a corner is not ideal (for anyone)!

Hi @SAGUY1971 . If you are flying into London (is that Heathrow) then there are quite a few flight options if you don't mind an airport change. Check flights from Gatwick or Stanstead. Ryanair fly from Stanstead to Ancona and these flights can be as cheap as 25euros (plus baggage and everything else they charge for). However that track through London and out to that airport may not be as appealing as an easier flight from Heathrow and a car hire in Italy. Check KLM also as they do connecting flights that change in Amsterdam (Schipol Airport). Safe trip!

Morning Richard People around the world are just loving your channel, and cheering you on! Some are even offering to drop by and help, and that speaks volumes. Be right proud of that. The Man VS Beam episode was like watching a boxing match. You went 6 rounds before your defeat of the beam. Getting ready for another hoist appeared as if you were entering the ring for another round , would have been a fun touch to have a bell ring like at a match. At one time you looked punched drunk and couldn't get a leg up ( hope that doesn't come out the wrong way to a Brit). Thought you would have done the Rocky Dance of Victory but you were too nackerd (? spelling?) spent ( Canadian expression). Not only do you work incredibly hard whilst there, but the time and dosh spent travelling, you certainly have determination down pat. That may not be affordable to others but this your video - your experience. You have graciously shared your different options on that end as well. There was program years back about two brothers that crossed the channel with their boat and travel the rivers in Europe. Once they entered Germany, the game changed - they called it the land of the super efficient. Lufthansa had you convinced of that. Just so much great info shared in this video. You do aim to please. As for the house, I wonder how old is it? It is becoming alive, becoming a home once again. Yes, opening up the wall was such a game changer visually and that also allows for heat from the fireplace to warm up more space. One could hear the joy in your voice, when your hand spanned the future placement of the kitchen and then with the look of new opened up space. You were beaming with pride and joy. That you decided to tap the walls reminded me of a line in a song, "when she is weary, try a little tenderness". Still a ways to go, so pace yourself like in a good bike race. Remember your mask. Love of the land is something many city dwellers don't understand. This is growing on you more with each visit, having field envy made me laugh, but those distant fields showed that farmer's connection to the land, respect for it, and his pride. Wanting your field to look nice and pretty was priceless. That would be something only the city mouse would have said to the country mouse. It is not only the warmth of the sun and blue skies that has lured you in, but the land has touched you a way others just can't comprehend. This is a milestone in your life, relish every moment of the challenge and that this old house and three acres will change you. Manchester could be a distant memory sooner than you think. Life is short and life is only now. Once all is done it will be like the end of a really good book. Couldn't put it down, and a bit sad that it is finished. But you will look around and be so much richer for what you have achieved. Bravo. Sorry, another long comment from me. Just me.

I forgot to add, when you were hauling out all the metal stuff, there was an old plow that would have been pulled by a horse or an ox. It was hard work to plow a field back then. There would be a leather harness worn by both man and beast, as well as to the plow to hold it more steady/in line. My father used to do manual farm labor in Europe and he used those. One time while plowing out in the field, the horse picked up the scent of a mare and bolted. It took everything for my father to get out of his harness, the horse running full out, and with the plow swinging and flying all over the place, as well as my father. The horse came home 3 days later, plow completely bent and smashed up. The farmer was so mad at my father, he said back to him, "It was all could to get free otherwise he would have been dead". I may have grown up as a city mouse but I have a lot of country mouse in me. There is a strength brought on by farming, gives one a backbone and pride. Being connected to land - is a whole other experience. To smell the wind and watch the sky.

Best wishes to you.

@@threeacresofmarche Absolutely agree with your plan. There is work everywhere you look, but just look at the progress you've made! Maybe you could hang some old tools on the exterior wall of the shed. I saw you look at that old plow when you pulled it out, and really thought you would have kept it. Paying homage to the old farm. Maybe even had kept that old tractor seat and fixed it to a tree stump as an all season chair. Water under the bridge now. I have some of my fathers old tools - well worn and stood the test of time. Like they say one person's trash is someone else's treasure. PS - I would have dug a trench along the side of the road to the drain, that way you wouldn't have a dip in the road. Only a thought.

@@threeacresofmarche yes one would think it would be that simple! We’ve tried to string together flights from the US every which way (even trying to book separate tickets) to make things cheaper, but unfortunately there’s only one codeshare that occasionally has reasonable flights from the US that line up with any connections to Ancona that don’t involve a mid route change of airport (eg CDG to Orly, or LHR to stansted), or an overnight stay somewhere, which defeats the convenience and adds the cost of a hotel. With so few sensible route/flight options, the cheap seats fill up fast and then the rest are completely outrageous. 🥴

The main cost is car hire over long periods and so if I time things well with bringing my own car down and then popping back on a flight may sounds expensive but the flights can be very affordable (if booked in well in advance). The dry material will suck the water out of the new material and leave about an 1/8" of it dry and crumbly. it won't bond properly. If you have trouble in future that will be why. After the first 10 years of living in Le Marche my wife and I started shuttle travel first traveling home for Christmas with a car load of goodies and two dogs, but after we had got the house sorted we would spend 6-8 weeks in each place until the dogs got too old to make the journey. Then my wife took a job at one of the universities and we reversed the pattern sometimes flying some times driving (2/3 days), Le Marche is probably as far south in Italy as it would be possible to do this. I would suggest that he should look at the laths and roof beams and maybe slip an insulating membrane, it falls into Italian building regulations, is quite easy to do and makes a world of difference both in the winter and the summer. Hi @paulclay560 . I am learning but the language with these level of meeting was difficult. I had help with a translator that would attend these meetings with me. Good luck with your plans and search. If you can be as good as you can with the language for viewings that should make most of it flow easily. Big meetings - like when you sign for the house - you will have to pay for an official translator. I cover some this in the detail video that I made.👍

Hi @valtervogliotti2277 . I know what you mean but to reassure you - I have seen these dogs and they do look like the breed that is ok to be kept outside in barns or under cover. The barn is very large and they are fed like clockwork twice a day.

Thank you @Cashclever for the kind offer. I am getting a few offers in so will look to get organised and put out a few dates / weeks where those that are interested could stop by. Maybe next year...this year is still too hectic lining up the professional help and deliveries.😂

Curious ... is there a local Dump you have access to where you can toss debris, garbage, old bedframes, bricks, and rocks? Do they charge you, or is it part of your local tax coverage?

HI @kookietherapy9398 . Yes, there is a local dump which can be used for free, or as part of your local taxes. I am sure they can pick up some things but I have not looked into that yet. I had somebody collect a truck load of scrap metal - shown in a previous video.👍

Question: what happens to all of the demo/ construction debris? Does a specific company have to come and pick it up?

HI @thomasclifton31 . I am saving a lot of it for the base / footings of the patio that I will build once I know the level that the kitchen door will finish. I hope to repurpose as much as I can. Scrap metal and asbestos being the two main ones that need to be taken away properly.

Hi @SergeiSmalkov . They had an old dual fuel stove / boiler down by the bathroom that they removed. I looked into replacing that but am preferring to go with electric heating and get solar in to cover as much of that as possible. It seems easier and cheaper to zone individual heaters....but I am still researching.

Richard. Stupid question….Just Curious to know what you do with all the rubble. Does Italy have dumpsters, etc that you can rent or does the town pick it all up weekly?

Hi @luciodeluca3257 I am saving all the rubble for the base and footings for the patio and some steps that I will have in the future. I have not looked into having rubbish or rubble picked up but I did get some help with the scrap metal where they took it for free and kept the profits from the sale. A fair deal. That is in video #7 kzread.info/dash/bejne/dpuExq-LhKezYpM.htmlsi=oMzEY-_fVk7f-Pxt 👍
