11 Basses Comparison - Shoot Out - Rickenbacker Vs Gretsch Vs Fender Vs Gibson and MORE
Музыка
Hi! In this clip I compare 11 basses! They are all played through a Universal Audio 2-610 Tube Preamp, with the same settings (max Gain, +6 dB under 200Hz) exept for the volume which is adapted to put the basses at the same volume level.
The basses are:
1. 2013 Gibson RD, Krist Novoselic
2. 2013 Fender Jazz Bass, American Deluxe
3. 2013 Rickenbacker 4003
4. 2013 Fender Jaguar
5. 2013 Fender Starcaster
6. 2013 Gretsch Electromatic
7. 2010 Gibson Thunderbird
8. 1970s Stagg EB-3
9. 1990s Cort Precision, P-Bass
10. 1965 Gibson EB-2
11. 1973 Fender Precision, P-Bass
Let me know what you think!
Cheers!
Johan

Idk man, but I love that Krist Novoselic RD bass.
Hey Johan! About a year ago I wrote a message here indicating that your videos inspired me to learn to play bass. Shortly after that I purchased an Ibanez SR750 and started taking lessons. A year later, I joined the choir at our church and began playing with the other guitarists. I played several songs with the church choir on Christmas day! I still have a lot to learn, but I am determined to stick with it. So, thank you so much for posting your videos about basses. Wishing you a healthy and prosperous 2018!!
Punch, deep and clear....... RICKENBACKER THE BEST !!!!

Deep? Rickenbacker??I think they have a total lack of low end and for something you pay close to $2000 for, they do kinda suck
@JohanSegeborn
9 жыл бұрын
Well this example is great, but I know what you mean, the lower midrange muds out the lower end. For any studio muscician obviously the Jazz bass is a more generally applicable tool. Still just the lower midrange is what make many people like the Ric, me included. Cheers Johan

The Rick sounds AWESOME, but please lets be fair: he plays it with pick, the first two were with finger, not the same. Harry, I have a 4001 from 1979, and if there is something the rick has is low end. Thick deep and defined. I use a Trace Elliot 250 W from the 90s and Ampeg 4 x 10 and 1 x 15". AWESOME!!
@shannow95

4003 owner here the pick does remove a lot of low end but from the switch position this is the bridge pick up only which doesn't have much bottom. The bridge pickup gives a lot of mid.
For me, there were two clear winners. The Ricky and the Thunderbird. I'd take the Stagg too if there was room in the van!

I love how you adapted your playing to let each bass shine through. Rippin' grooves!
This video is a great comparison, really nice to find a well made and excellent played video to watch and listen. I could actually hear the difference! I'm a Fender user but really enjoy the Thunderbird sound.

It truly depends on the particular sound you're looking for. My "go to" is a Rickenbacker 4003. BUT, that is the sound I like the most. The Gibson Thunderbird "growls" and the EB has the classic 60's soft, deep muddy sound. The Fenders and Gretchs are best suited for a more jazzy sound. The Cort splits the difference between the T-bird and Fenders. Again, it really does depend on what sound you are looking for.
Hello Johan, you have answered so many of my questions about basses through this magnificent video. Thank you

Wow - Johan, I hadn't seen a bass shoot-out by you before, and I have to say, you are a brilliant bass player! Love your sense of groove! I honestly prefer to hear you play bass over the guitar, and that's not a slur on your guitar playing either - it's just a fact! Excellent work, as per usual...

Great demo. They all have their own personality and strengths. And of course with different amps, settings, and playing styles the possibilities are endless. I was intrigued by the Starcaster. The tone you were getting out of it was almost like an upright. I wonder what it would sound like fretless? That's giving me some ideas... :)

I just watched this video for the first time in a few months and realized something. I subconsciously imitated all the riffs that you play here in my own playing, and now they have shaped my musical style! Kudos to you, Johan, you have influenced a musician without him even realizing it at the time! And, just for the record, I really like the Cort, the Tbird, and the 4003 best. I like lots of mids and trebles in my bass tone.

I'm a Fender Jazz guy, but I really liked the Gibson RD. It had great definition and clarity. I had a Gibson Thunderbird that I had lusted after for years, but found that it a was neck heavy and it got uncomfortable to play, so I got rid of it. The 2011 Fender Jaguar was too complicated and it didn't last long in my collection. My Ernie Ball Bongo bass was really nice but the neck kept needing adjustment all the time. My favorites were the G&L ASAT and Fender American Jazz. Thanks for the video!

Honestly, you made them all sound quite great. Different preferences for different people! I was surprised how much I liked the Stagg EB3. Is that a cheap bass like a Cort? I'm not familiar with the brand. Most of these had a nice tonal starting point where the individual could dial in something more to their own taste. But again, your playing was outstanding. Thanks for the great videos.

Thanks man! Stagg makes entry level stuff today. This bass is from the lawsuit era in the seventies, and it's certainly compareable to contemporary Gibsons. I paid about $200 for it a couple of years ago. Cheers Johan

Thanks for posting this video! You got a new subscriptor and fan ;) ....Happy New Year!
I've listened again but this time with my laptop's tinny speakers, not with good studio monitor headphones. To me the TBird came through amazingly well, that powerful low end just bulldozed through.
