You’re always forgetting astronomy! For stargazing, 10x50s are the preferred model. 7x50s have been most recommended in the past but are now hard to find except in cheapest Porro prism models, or very heavy and expensive marine binoculars. But in 10x50s the debate among astronomers is Porro vs roof prism. Porros might be brighter in theory but roofs usually have the better optics and build quality.

A good porro can beat a Schmit Pechan Roof for astronomy, and only Abbe Koening roofs can compete with the best porros like the FMT-SX, at 3 times the cost. Also, roofs tend to have things like fast center focus, that are not needed for astronomy, only the Nikon no hold barrel Abbe Koening roofs for astronomy come with IF focus. Also porros have more distance between the objetive lenses, and that gives you a false 3D space walk sense.

@@ricardosoto5770 10 months latter I got a Leica Trinovid 10X42 and a Nikon AEX 10X50. The Leicas bet out the Nikon at day, bighter crisper. Yet at night, the 50mm objetives do make a difference in favor of the Nikons despite the cheap optics.Off course my 7X50s FMTRSX beat both in the night sky. I cant wait to go get a 10X50 Fujinon FMTXS. Premiun Porro optics and transmission in a 10X50: The Leicas will be my birding bin and the Fujis my astro bin.

I think that the quality of the image matters more with binoculars, not the weight or the size, when you look through binoculars you want to see as clearly and in detail as possible, so I consider that 10x50 is better than 10x42 at any time.

I am comparing the GPO Passion ED 10x42 binocular with the Vortex Viper HD 10x50 binocular. Interestingly enough, the Viper has a slightly larger field of view at 346 ft vs 340 ft for the GPO. The eye relief is 16mm for both. The Viper is only 2 ounces (50 grams) heavier than the GPO. Without considering price, what is your opinion on which of these to get? I’m looking for an all around 10x binocular for general use (birdwatching, moon and stargazing, etc. ). Thanks!

I would definitely go with Vortex (Viper). They make very high quality optics and they have a very good warranty on their products. I own 3 different optics by Vortex and am extremely happy with them.

I ended up getting GPO Passion ED in 8x42 size. Has a wider field view than 10x42 and image is more stable then a 10x, because the 10x greatly magnifies the slightest bit of shaking of the hands. If were using a tripod to eliminate any shaking, then I would have bought the 10x50 which are noticeably heavier but would be steady on the tripod. However, my use of binoculars is mobile so tripod option is not for me.

I am trying to make a choice between these two binoculars! I like the pros and cons with respect to birding/general use. I am leaning towards the 10x50, for the extra light. Yet caring camera gear and Binos the 10x42’s make sense. I will have to go back to the store and try them again! I agree with the Astro comment, for Comets/Milky Way. Decisions..... ?
