When it comes to binoculars the nr1 important thing is that you can get a steady enough image. 8x42 is 10% brighter than 10x50 which is barely noticeable so these are to be considered as practically the same bright. 8x gives a more stable image and wider field of view. One thing often forgotten is that a lower magnification gives better depth of field. And especially if you go from 6 or 7x to 10x this is directly noticeable, but also from 8x. If you don't always need high magnification and want to have a very stable image without frequently refocusing, add a 6x binocular to your collection. A 6x32 gives the same brightness as 8x42, but in smaller size and weight. There are 6x30 and 6,5x32 options as well. Just a side note. 8x42 is a better allround choice while 10x50 is a good choice for long distance observations and stargazing, providing you can hold the binocular enough still.

You keep forgetting stargazing! A 10x50 is usually the preferred model now for the light gathering power and resolution vs. weight and magnification. A 7x50 was a popular choice but most models are now either very low cost Porros, or very costly and heavy marine models. But as you know, there is a good choice of decent quality but economical 10x50 Porros and many more 10x50 roofs. Bigger models are nice but usually require tripod mounting. For casual handheld stargazing a 10x50 works well. But for a binocular to be used for other purposes as well as for stargazing, and 8x42 or 10x42 is a good choice.

You are correct, Stargazing is the field for the 10X50. But I use Steiner 7x50 Military and Marine. Many of the darkest skies are in beaches, into the sea or in the mountains and they are very damp places, so using marine binoculars make a lot of sense. Also I do not use a tripod and find the 10X50s a bit shaky to see pint point targets like the stars without a tripod (birds and animals no problem). I plan to buy some Nikons or Pentax 10x50 for stargazing in the urban sky. But Im starting to think that if you do need a tripod to use binoculars, go all the way to a 12X50, 15x70, 16x80 or 20X80.

PD, I replaced my Steiners by Fujon Polaris 7x50s and added a monopod for the Nikon 10X50s. For birdwatching I like 8X42 and 8X32s. Dreaming for a Fuji Polaris 10x50, the ultimate astro bin.

Worth to bear in mind is that the full capacity of 7x50 can only be used for younger persons. Persons around 50 years age in general have max 5-6mm dilated eye pupil, and it then decreases further with age. Therefore 7x42 - 7x35 will be as good as 7x50 for an older person and 7x50 will be unnecessary weight to handle and carry around.

When buying something expensive, putting information together is like doing a puzzle. I got a couple of puzzle pieces in my purchase.

Great review, but Is this a fair comparison? The GPO binoculars has a range finding function, which adds to weight and size

Thank you for the comment! Even though we used GPO Rangeguide 10x50 for the presentation, the debate was focused on the differences between 8x42 and 10x50 configurations in general. As you said, the LRF-compartment adds to the weight - but even without such a compartment, the 10x50s are heavier than 8x42s.

What a superb and bespoke insight into these classes. A very useful and refined overview. I have a question. Do the new NL Pure 10x42 have better resolution than the EL 10x50? Thank you.

Hi! With 8x42 you get a wider field of view, while 10x50 gives you more detail but a smaller field of view. It depends on your preferences.

Bird watching is often done by day and includes a lot of walking around, so a light, compact roof in better, also you need close focusing capabilities, so center focus is a must, cloud watching is also on daylight. To get the 8x42. 7x50 with IF focus are NOT for birdwatching at all, much less 10X50s. Even those porros that have center focus, is not very close, often 8 to 12 meters. I can see Jupiters moons with my Steiners but I cannot see a parrot eating a mango in front of my apartment. Walking through a national park, with a pair of 7x50s or God helps you 10x50 porros IS NOT FUN. 8x42 are far better for birdwatching.

Good day. I'm asking again, I have a new high-quality 10x32 binocular that lets in over 92% of the light, which is really great. But it still occurs to me that if you look at the 8x32 version, there would be a big difference, for example, in image stabilization, but the quality of details would be worse, or would it not even be very different ?

The field of view would be bigger and therefore you would see a bit less details. Could you please write us an email at info@optics-trade.eu? Our sales team will reply as soon as possible, and explain it further.

You can use 10x50 binoculars for astronomy, but this configuration is not ideal. We would recommend a higher magnification, or even better, a spotting scope or a telescope. But if you are set on using binoculars, the bigger is better, but keep in mind that you will also need a tripod. We also made a video about Binoculars for Astronomy: kzread.info/dash/bejne/Y5eX1saJqbrbgaw.html

10 X 50 Porros, or that is too shaky for you, 7 X 50 Porros for hand held binos, They are pretty good for that job, Professional astronomers in Atacama Chile had told me that. Then they jump into USD 3K tripod mounted 15X, 20X giant binos. The Fujinon FMT-SX family seems to be the dominant high end binos for astronomy, beating Swaros, Zeiss and their fuji KUO BA8 chinese clones right now. Nikon IF Prostar porros has good reputation but they are hard to get. Handhend binos do have a place in astronomy. for watching meteors, constelations or galaxies. Telescopes show you parts of an structure, but sometimes you want the see the forest, not a particular branch of a tree. Another often neglected binos for astronomy are the 8X56s. I keep hearing many good things of the Shadowquest Steiners.
