10X10 Thermal Reflective Tarp - The Kany/Yuedge Sunshade Rainfly

This is a close look at another personal shelter sized waterproof/water resistant tarp. This particular tarp has two things really going for it. 1) It is very inexpensive. and 2) One side of it is theremal reflective so if you like to build reflector lean to's or super shelters, this might be exactly what you need because it is far larger than any other thermal reflective tarp or blanket or sheet of mylar on the market. It is less reflective than a mylar space blanket, pretty close to the same but perhaps a bit less than a Grabber Outdoors All Weather Blanket, but it is far more reflective than the UST BASE 1.0 Tube Tarp.
This tarp has some short comings in the materials they chose for grommets and tie out points. It does not have the 3000 HH rated PU coating they claim it has (though it has been sprayed with a DWR) and this might best suit a DIY-er or a bushcrafter who doesn't mind having to overcome its shortcomings... such as it only has 6 tie out points on it and the hem is only barely attached to the material etc.

Great detailed review. I need a reflective tarp for light duty in the dog days of summer and this may be the ticket. Not great quality but not expensive either. Thanks for the info.

Thanks for watching! I'm glad this was useful for you. Just to note: I'm not sure if he has any left, but 2GoSystems has had the Reflect20D tarps sale priced because of an issue that came up with the tie-outs that aren't reinforced (8 outside tie outs are reinforced, all center seam tie outs are reinforced, but 8 outside tie outs in between the seams are not). It might be worth checking out.

There is now a much higher quality thermal reflective (actually aluminum coated) 3mX3m tarp to be found. I released a video on the 2Go Systems Reflect 20D about 2 weeks ago. It's way more expensive, but has no materials or workmanship issues (plus it's lighter and packs down smaller). The tarp in this video remains interesting and I still think it's worthwhile for budget minded folks who are willing to do modifications... but I'm happy to see that the idea of using thermal reflective materials in 1-2 person shelter sized tarps is getting a boost. Thanks for watching!

Great review, and thanks for exposing all of the flaws. Maybe we could call this a larger, more durable, and waterproof space blanket. Also, it is not crinkly and noisy, but I wonder how it would hold up in a moderate to high wind? I guess someone could also run an additional stich around the entire border, just to hold everything in place better. Thanks for sharing.

Is the hiking pole due to injury or just a pointer stick? I hope all is well. Thanks for the warning/video. For the use you suggested. It seems ok. Please put the link to the video with the tarp button ideas in the description as well as in this video.

I appreciate the concern. And yes. I am nursing a back injury. I've used that pole as a pointer in a couple of videos but I was leaning on it in this one due to some sciatica. Again, thanks for the concern! ... I am adding the link to the description now. Thanks for the suggestion. I should start making that a practice. KZread pushes using the "cards" in the creator studio quite a lot and I think they work better than the in-video annotations, but the description is probably the best place because the cards link viewers away from what they are currently watching if they click one.

Yes that is why I usually miss out. I want to finish the video I am on rather than hit the link in the vidoe to another video. I will pray for your back. I hope it is better soon. My last one took way to long to heal. I healed faster when I was in my twenties and thirties.

I like that it is reflective. I did a video a year and a half ago about different space blankets and other reflective items. I was hunting for materials appropriate for super shelter construction... I wish I would have found this sooner. Thanks for watching!

That 8'8" ridgeline length for an A frame pitch is really short even for a hammock. Even you standard 10' hammock (Hennessey Expedition) has a 8'4" ridgeline so it would barely fit under this tarp in that tarp configuration. Many camping hammocks these days are 11' long (fabric length) and have a 110" ridgeline length so won't fit under this tarp. If you pitch this diagonally, it will give an almost 14' length and that is too long and doesn't give enough side coverage. For hammock use, I would pass on this tarp. For ground dwelling, shelter use, it would be fine for the price. The reflective material on the inside, would make for a good base for a Mors Kochanski super shelter.

Other than the weight consideration, I have exactly zero negatives to say about the Aqua Quest Defender and King Camo tarps. That will serve you well for many years.
