Went the 10Gbit route (via OM4 fiber) for my home network a bit over a year ago, and my provider has since then upgraded speeds to 6Gbit symmetrical, even then, it's really rare to actually see anything near that outside of speed tests.

While I agree, for many 'off-the-shelf' NAS solutions 10gbe definitely may not give the boost you would anticipate. For ZFS and some BTRFS solutions the caching mechanisms can give you a lot of that performance back. The ultra cheap 2.5gb NIC's definitely hit quite a sweet spot though.

Just purchased couple used NIC's and SFP's on ebay, complete setup with fibre got me around 120€ total for a dedicated 10Gb line from PC to NAS. Was running NAS for several years now, last year upgraded NAS hardware, that made it fastest storage in my home. In the meantime games get biger and I got decent amount of free space on NAS. So I decided to move my steam library to NAS too. New SSD for games with needed capacity would be aroun 300€+, getting used server stuff was just plain cheaper than getting new SSD. Plus it would make working with other files nicer too, not just games. Main network in house is still 1Gb as it is more than enought for general internet stuff.

I'm currently looking at 10GbE for centralizing my data to a server array; I run a multimedia production studio and all of our data is stored on individual computers, making collaboration extremely difficult. Awesome video!! Very nicely explained. We produce 3D animation videos for kids. Recently bought an 80TB NAS server (with SSD drives). Our server to switch is connected to 10+10gig (paired 20 gig), and some 20 workstations (with SSD drives) are connected to switch with 1gig network. We are moving to a new and bigger studio where we will add another 10-15 users. Will put Cat6a for sure. We need to buy a new switch too, will it make sense for us to invest in a 48port 10 gig switch and upgrade all our networking to 10gig??

At home my network is basically split out as an ‘upstairs’ and ‘downstairs’ network so I’m looking at using a pair of D-Link stackable switches that have 2 or 4 SFP+ ports to give me a 10GBe uplink between the upstairs and downstairs switches so that the machines upstairs aren’t bandwidth throttled.

When I started in IT, 10Mb networks were the standard. When 100Mbs came out minds were blown, people of today have no idea . So I laugh when I hear 1Gbs is slow. Sure for comparison to 10Gbs+ it is.... but you have no idea what it was like.

you also didn't have to transfer large files. how big was the data back then when a floppy drive was considered standard when a 4k movie can be over 100GB ... that's like old people complaining about prices but when you look at cost, pay and inflation over time, they had more purchasing power.

My first experience with networking two computers together was after getting dial up internet and discovering that I could build a parallel cable to transfer files between two machines with no lan built in. It was the coolest thing ever. DOS 6.22 had a built in utility for this. I'm 43 years old and I remember it like it was yesterday.

one thing that will help is a proper home network. A single 24 port switch will be better then a bunch of cheap 5 port dlink switches scattered around the house

Thank you SO MUCH for the sobering video about whether I'd really NEED that kind of bandwidth and speed. I'd like more people in the house to use the server I set up, but it's not there yet. Kinda pissed we get about 200-something Mbits on our main rigs over 5Ghz Wi-Fi when paying ~$155/mo to Cox for Gigablast though, so I wanna wire the house! I'm thinking I'll invest in CAT6 cabling if I'm gonna go fishing cable and putting holes in the wall anyway, so I'll only have to do it once. But I can definitely save a ton of money on proper equipment, knowing that 10Gb/s is mainly for bragging rights these days! I've heard of 2.5Gb equipment being a lot cheaper, so maybe I'll look into that... EDIT: The money I save can go to getting an ECC mobo + RAM for my scrappy Proxmox NAS. Thanks! :D

Just this evening I transferred a 13.5 gig folder from one computer in my rack to another over 10gbe Fiberoptic SFP+. The file on the first computer was on a single SATA ssd and the destination drive on the other computer was an m.2 nvme. The transfer never got over 125MB per second. I'm Not sure why it was so slow. What might I start looking for?

I am thinking of upgrading to 10gbe for a home network I am setting up. I will be connecting a NAS (5 or 6 drives) to a switch and then to my working pc. I would be sharing the network with one other person. He would be using it as a local media library and I would be using it for Lightroom photo editing and photography backups. I currently only have a 1 gbe network card in my pc and a 1 bg switch. with the usage in my case, would upgrading my gear to 10 gbe be worth it considering there is 2 people, one of which is a photographer? Also, what NAS drives would you recommend and network card? I was thinking of getting a 6 bay synology nas. Thanks for the video man!

I was thinking of buying a Mac Mini M2 and adding 10 GB for 2 reasons: I plan to keep it for approx. 10 years (my 2013 iMac is still going very strong) and for resale value once I do get rid of it in 10 years or so. I also work from home and access servers at work via MS Remote Desktop and my home internet is 1.5 GB. Thoughts? Thanks!

I've been hearing about how wild 10gbps is. I'm installing a LAN in my house soon and was looking at the Omada system (for simplicity sake) I have a 'lite' Ubiqiti setup since it was 'cheap' at the time when I just needed a wireless network. I use my network for gaming, streaming and I have a central storage drive planned for the house. There are others who will be using the network to. So based on that, I assume 2.5gbps could get saturated in a hurry? Should I step up to 5gbps (and is it on Omada or Unifi?) or should I just go full 10gbps?

Dude, it's like I sat down across from you and asked the questions I had, and you answered all of them clearly and succinctly without an alphabet soup of jargon. I can't tell you how helpful this one video was in helping me make some decisions. I'm one guy (photographer/wanna-be video creator) in my house with my wife, and we won't be sharing a networked drive. I recently bought a Synology 1522+ with five 12tb Seagate Ironwolf drives. My primary concern is editing files stored on the NAS, particularly regardless of where I am, as I travel quite a bit. I've watched hours of video on this and still find myself stumbling with all the jargon being thrown around by guys who work in networks for a living, and I really just need a down-to-earth recommendation on how to set this up for MY needs. This video was created almost 3 years ago so I wonder what's changed, if anything, in your recommendations for someone in my position with my needs?

Nothing really in terms of speeds has changed. If you’re looking to edit from anywhere then I’d honestly look at setting up Parsec on your home workstation then remote in and edit from there. If that’s not feasible then your network speeds over WAN will def be your bottleneck before your local connection speeds.

@@RaidOwl don’t have a home “workstation”, just my Dell XPS17 I carry around with me. At home it’s plugged into a CalDigit T3 Plus dock station & I use a 4K monitor.. Laptop has i9 cpu, 2 tb ssd hd, 64gb RAM & NVIDIA 3060 GC.

I went the 10G route for my Server since 2.5G looks like to be not well supported by Linux/TrueNAS Scale. The rest of my network is mostly 1G or 2.5G. Only my main PC also runs a 10G card because my Switch has a second 10G port...

I completely lost control at some point and am currently at 40Gbps home networking for years now 🤨️ It was a good deal OK!! Seriously though, cant wait for 2.5Gbps to become the new baseline.

I have looked at 2.5, 5, and 10Gb networking and honestly I don't see myself ever upgrading the Cat5 cable I installed in my house. I just bought my first home server this past year or so which is an HPE MicroServer Gen10 Plus. I'm only running open media vault with like 12 docker containers and a few VMs. I'm basically the only person who ever touches it. After I setup zfs on the 4 HDDs and transferred over all of my ripped movies, music, steam game backups, and personal files the files don't change very much at all. So no matter what speed I upgrade my network to it would largely go unused.

Just you wait you can now buy gen 3 nvme drives for 150 usd. Thats around 3500~mb/s which theres not that many uses right now. But for me i need it for photo editing because hdds are so slow for random read and write for 45mb raw files when theres 100s of them

“Asking for a friend”…but just got the Asustor Lockerstor 4 Gen 2, 2 Seagate Ironwolf Pro 20TB Enterprise NAS HDD (I need more for RAID 5), the M.2 + Seagate FireCuda 530 4TB Internal Solid State Drive - M.2 PCIe Gen4 for that. Please tell me I’m not wasting money…ha, ha! I edit large videos and projects, sometimes up to 1 TB, but usually around 80-100 GB video project files. I’m looking for access to my video files when out of town, faster processing, backing up and storage. I’m super new to NAS, so now I need to make sure my home internet is fast enough, correct? Also, Om under the impression I plug my NAS directly into my router, or do I need a switch? It has a couple open spots on it for the cable…thanks for the input. Thanks so much and great video!

Does the type of file system affect the speed of transferring a lot of files? For instance, can ZFS handle this faster than BTRFS? Or it's all the same?

The filesystem can certainly affect how fast transfer speeds are. Searching the web will often lead you to dozens of different studies showing one being faster than the other and vice-versa lol.

This is a fantastic video, thank you. This video definitely deserves more than 500+ likes. So in order to fully utilize the 10Gb network, I would first need to upgrade my main router that can support that. Doesn't everything branch from the router? Thanks!

Yeah with 10G your client devices and how they’re connected all need to support 10G. For the most part you’ll use a switch to connect multiple devices. I personally use the Unifi Flex XG with has 4 10G ports.

Why do I want 10Gb? Because that’s what future me would want to have. Also I wonder how a different codec would affect editing from a NAS. Something like ProRes or Dnx.

if possible everyone should have at least CAT6A Cable as it should be the new standard.

Yeah but that's only if your running new cable in a new installation or you plan on upgrading past 1Gb. I'll never upgrade my Cat5 cable in my house. No need.

Not running 10Gb, but using 10Gb between 2 switches as interconnection. One of the switches has PoE, the other one does not.

I didin't reallyl need 10GBE. I bought a used S2500 on ebay for the POE+ ports for my security cameras. It just happens to have 4 SFP+ 10GBE ports, so I used them.

Great explanation, thanks! My office has 5 workstations running off 1 server via a switch. So upgrade will work. What do you think about Cat 8 cable? this is available on Amazon as patch cables but not in rolls. Would you run cat 8 from server to switch? Do you use Cat 8 at your own home? BTW I remember when I upgraded (early) from 10/100 to 1000MBPS networking, everyone said I didn't need it, but it helped a lot. They also said I didn't need SSD's but they helped too. Ben's law of computers- they're only fast enough for 3 months! Lol! Thanks for helping!

Cat8 is wayyyy overkill for a home setup. You shouldn’t need anything more than Cat6a for the longer runs or Cat6 for anything under 100ft. This is if you plan on doing 10Gbps networking. Anything less and you can stick with good ole Cat5e

Depending on your use case then yes having a cache drive would help you to utilize more bandwidth. 10Gb networking is great, just gotta make sure to use it properly.

Don't need it but got it anyway. Doubled my upload speed and back ups and transferring files is stupidly fast.

I run a homelab with a bunch of servers doing all sorts of things. I desire 10 Gbit/s ethernet because.. reasons... it's shiny... However I also have LibreNMS monitor my setup, keeping an eye on my servers and network, and truth be told the only time I max out my 1 Gb/s network is for roughly half an hour during night time when my servers do backups and for a couple of minutes once or twice per week when I've ripped a bluray movie and uploads it to my nas. The rest of the time I have less than 5% utilisation.

Sure, half an hour sounds like not a great value proposition, until you consider it would be 5 hours on 1Gbe. The short time it's used is the value...

Yes and no. If you have a striped RAID across 10 drivers, the server is reading small parts, 1/9th to 1/7th conceivably, of the large file from multiple drives at the same time. The processor puts the parts together and sends the file, in pieces again called packets. I don’t have numbers, however, reading a 10 GB file from a drive takes longer than reading a 1 GB file. Switching to 10 Gbe isn’t as easy as buying the equipment and plugging it in either. For instance, to maximize the transfer spead, you have to activate Jumbo Packets in the network configuration at both ends. Also, any switch in-between has to be compatible with Jumbo Packets. I’m still tweaking my 10 Gbe network. I’ve seen 600+ MBs or 4.8 Gbs. Actually, the tweaking starts at the purchase of the equipment doesn’t it. There is a lot to consider before even buying the equipment. For instance, you can’t necessarily use the same cabling you had for your 1 Gbe network. Cat 5 and 5E are not sufficient. Your new equipment will function but not at 10 Gbe. Most likely the same with Cat 6. Cat 6A, 7, and 8 can work over short distances.

Great video but i am still trying to understand, i have a server based on truenas with hdds drives and i am thinking adding a ssd on nvme cashe drive. The server and the pc are having 1gb ethernet port. I didn't noticed but i had bought a switch (cause i need more ethernet ports near my machines) which is 100mbps only and the speed is really low. So here is my question is in my system if i buy 2x10gb port cards and connect 1 on my main pc 1 on my server and link them together (pcserver) i would be able to reach theoretically 10g speed? Or it will need to pass through a switch? Also on my system using hdd drives i will be able to reach higher speeds?

You’d be correct in that if you made a direct connection between your pc and server with 10Gb cards installed then you’d have full 10Gbps speeds. That’s a common option for a lot of people if they don’t need 10Gb in multiple places.

All i wanted was a server for multiple thinks (media player,storage etc) your videos helped me at some point. Moreover I want to ask 2 more thinks: 1st even if i install 10g network cards i will be able to increase transfer speed on hhd drives that i am currently using? If yes how? Completely agree, but i don't think its not a valid thing for home users. Yes the average joe won't need it. They are simple Netflix users, even at 4k, they will only net about 40mbits per stream (aka 4% of a 1gb connection). It is more likely they will reach ISP bandwidth before exceeding home network bandwidth. When it comes to small offices or power users, it starts becomming a coin toss. Power users tend to be enthusiasts who are willing to spend the extra money, small offices generally don't see the purpose of the overhead (unless its a new office). When you're a poweruser and have a data server (or NAS) running, you may want to increase bandwidth. Talking about my decision making. to be honest, since i need PoE for my CCTV cams, and the fact i will need to upgrade 2 switches (1x 16 port and 1x 8 port) it becomes fairly costly. It would run me about 1k USD to upgrade it and the features it brings (aka waiting half the time for a file transfer) are not worth it to me at this point. Instead i'm opting to 'circle' my network, making use of the Spanning Tree Protocol. With that sure i would lose 2 ports on each switch ill have a theoretical bandwidth of 2gb's. Which would be nice, 1gb for home use, 1gb for CCTV use.

Look into link aggregation/bonding. Spanning Tree is a tool to prevent loops.

My wife asked "should we upgrade to 10G?" No honey it's a marketing buzzword, we're fine.

Even WIFI6 is faster than 1GB :) , maybe not 10GB, but there is a lot equipment out there already with 2.5GB as a standard and no doubt 2.5GB should be the new standard.

It is not faster than 1GB to a single client. Doesn't really even get close. It can only have more than a GB in aggregate.
