You've done it again. Play a song by one of my favorite groups - a million requests come in, and another rabbit hole opens. No wonder there is so little good pop music today -- there is such a vast catalog from decades prior. Every band has it's own history. For example, Eric Stewart wanted a recording studio, and got Kevin Godley to be an investor. Creme and Gouldman joined up, and *boom* 10cc had their own recording studio -- Strawberry Studios. Named after 'Strawberry Fields Forever'. They recorded during the day, and for a while McCartney worked there at night. If you wish to dive into their epic track, 'Une Nuit A Paris' is a stunner with several segments. If you want their hypnotically smooth hit single, 'I'm Not in Love' will be recommended by a lot of people. I happen to prefer 'Don't Hang Up' and 'Art for Art's Sake', both of which got a lot of radio play in college. The entire 'How Dare You' album is a real sonic adventure. Anything random off of their first 4 albums is good (occasionally a bit naughty). Keep picking groups of this quality, investigate them on your own, and enjoy life bringing the feel-goods to your dedicated audience.

Haha thanks Edward!
Best song ever about Marilyn Monroe. There are at least three protagonists here: the agent/manager. the extra who fell in love with her on the set, the forgotten actor whose claim to fame is taking a dog for a walk. The album as a whole is drenched in saccharine-laced cynicism, much of it still topical. Best of the bunch for me is 'Old Wild Men', sadly as relevant today as it was 45 years ago.
There's a lot more goodies in the pipeline 🙂
Enjoyable tack. I was recently thinking of recommending 10cc - "Un Nuit a Paris" from the Original Soundtrack came to mind. It was released a year before Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody" - I'll just leave it at that.
Sheet Music is my favourite album by 10cc. Very clever, brilliant musicians and great harmonies. Very underated.
Wow, SHEET MUSIC !! The last track- Oh, Effendi- is my favorite. The first 4 albums by 10cc are brilliant !!

Oh, Effendi is about gun running in the Middle East & has plenty of references of Americanization of the region, but in a silly, silly way. Lots of word play & light heartedness throughout 10cc material. If not familiar with their stuff, about half of their song do not stay the same throughout, many ideas are introduced musically, but in a way that totally works !! Ideas not neccesarily needing time to develop, if well done & with a sense of humor that's very apparent. Genius, if you ask me. Subtlety done, but not always- depending on what the tune requires, really. And they seem to have a knack to KNOW what a tune requires in order to work properly. Oh, man- good ol' 10cc !! Back to Oh, Effendi.... Effendi is a popular female name in that part of the world, to my understanding. Oh, Effendi has this lyric, for instance : "Your guerillas are urban, there's bourbon on your turban & the sun shines out of your ass.... 😜 They were writers, firstly. Unable to sufficiently sell their own material, they decided to play their own material. Two members had to work up their chops in order to pull this off; Kevin Godley on drums & Graham Gouldman ( who had already had chart success with stuff he'd written- Heart Full of Soul by The Yardbirds among several others) on bass. Both Eric Stewart on lead guitar & Lol Creme were already more than proficient. In fact, Eric Stewart had already had success with The Mindbenders & used his money to build Strawberry Studios in Stockport, England near Manchester. This studio was used for many artists (including failed attempts on their own to hit the charts under different band names, prior to becoming 10cc) One of those other artists was Neil Sedaka. He recorded two reasonably decent selling LPs at Strawberry Studios while attempting a comeback into the music scene, including the original 'Love Will Keep Us Together', made popular 2 years later by Captain & Tennile. Enter Jonathan King. Jonathan King helped Genesis (and named the band, BTW) by managing them & getting them into another studio, Regent Sound Studios, to record their first album in 1968, when they were still 17, 18 years old. Jonathan King also bankrolled 10cc in their early days to get them up & running, only to be bought out of his contact with 10cc after Sheet Music was released. Funny thing about 10cc & Genesis. They both started out as wanna be songwriters, no intention of performing & were backed by Jonathan King. Strange stuff, but completely true.

Interesting choice of first listen of 10cc. Most would start with 'I'm Not In Love' or maybe 'I'm Mandy Fly Me' but I thoroughly agree with this choice. You might try 'Une Nuit A Paris' next. One of the best, most musically adventurous groups of the 70s.

Clockwork Creep from this album! 10cc had quite a few hit singles in the 70s in the UK. Rubber Bullets, Life is a Minestrone, The Dean and I and the mega-hit I'm not in Love. All fantastic.
10cc is Queen before Queen knew Queen - 10cc did Bohemian Rhapsody before Queen knew what it was, and i love Queen - it's no dis - This album, 'Sheet Music', was so far ahead of its time and the followup album, 'The Original Soundtrack' with the opening track, 'Une Nuit a Paris' followed by, 'I'm Not in Love', absolutely influenced the track 6 months late, Bohemian Rhapsody.
10cc is one my favorites, and Sheet Music is one of my favorite albums ever. Every song they do is unique. I really recommend more from this album, like Oh Effendi and Wall Street Shuffle.
10cc were ahead of their time. Imaginative, different, and quirky. I have to say I don't like all of their stuff, but there are so,e stand out tracks. This album in particular is a classic.
10cc are a great group, especially when Godley & Creme were still with them. The joke was when they left the group should rename themselves 5cc. The Godley & Creme solo albums are good too, especially the Zappa influenced "L". "Sheet Music" is probably the best 10cc album. My favorite is "How Dare You" but the biggest seller was "Original Soundtrack" due to the massive hit single, "I'm Not In Love". Continuing with this album, "Old Wild Men" is my favorite track. Beautiful.

So happy to see 10 cc getting some love
I bought Sheet Music in 1975 and still love it to this day. It was voted album of the year by Melody Maker (UK music paper) in 1975.
10cc is a criminally overlooked band, very smart and talented. Their 2 big hits were 'The Things We Do for Love' and 'I'm Not in Love'. While I don't own any of their original albums I did make a 2 disc compilation based on other collections, good stuff.
@legomattie3295

You forgot dreadlock holliday and wallstreet shuffle, which were greater hits worldwide than the things we do for love. And ofcourse there were some other hits. So weird when people saying I never heard of 10CC, so you are right about that the are overlooked, since they are. I am quite surem there are at least 10 of their songs people now about, but just don't know it is 10CC.
I'm not always sure if 10cc's songs always amount to more than the sum of their parts, but the parts are always impressive, impeccably imagined, performed and produced at a level that was rare, even in what was popular music's most fertile period. I suppose what I like most about 10cc is that they weren't afraid of being clever or arch. An Art Rock band that had pop hits, somewhat akin to Roxy Music or Sparks I suppose. I think what sets 10cc apart from Queen is that Queen, for all their veneer of sophistication, actually believed in the mythology of rock and roll, whereas 10cc were more cynical and disdainful.

Cynical but with a sense of humour attached to it. Such songs as Silly and the Worst band in the World depict that tongue in cheek approach. Godley & Creme were more of an influence on the 80's than most; along with Trevor Horn. More so than Bowie IMV because of the bands they audio/ visually produced. Ultravox, the Police, Yes, Duran Duran, Frankie Goes to Hollywood etc'.

Holy Sheet Music. I wasn't expecting this album right off the bat. So many goof choices from this band. It's not everyone's cup of tea, but it's super creative. You'll love I'm not in love, cry, dreadlock holiday, second sitting for the last supper, and I'm mandy fly me
Ever the innovators. more more more
Thank you, thank you, JP, I've requested them before. One of my favorite bands of the 70's. All four members sing lead and the harmonies are otherworldly. I can't think of another band in the art pop category that is so inventive, funny and beautiful. Not everything works but when it does it can be stunning. I recommend Lazy Ways from my favorite How Date You. But whatever you do will be an adventure because these guys are like no one else!

First band i ever saw live ... great stuff
So pleased you got around to 10cc. They have a huge back catalogue of clever prog/pop ... definitely part of the soundtrack of my teen years.
One of my all time favourite songs ever!
Only know “I’m not in love” from 10cc. But this was totally different yet still REALLY enjoyable. So nice to discover good music. Thanks a lot to the one suggesting this song and thanks to you Justin for reacting to it 😊
After years of just having the hits l have recently just bought the entire 11 album back catalogue of 10cc. Some great songs to be heard Justin.
That album is a gem. So good to see 10cc regarded as more than just their main breakout single. This is honestly one of my all-time albums since 2 years after its release when I first heard it. Try to come back for more some day. The whole album is clever 70s studio pop played to perfection. I’d heard the guys from Supertramp once said 10cc was one of the only groups they respected at the time. They were perfectionists and studio whizzes, with broad range of sounds and a lyrics just on the edge of comedic wordplay. It’s also been reported many times that one of their songs is what inspired Freddy Mercury to write “Bohemian Rhapsody”. It’s from the the album that came after this.
Justin, stick with these guys. They're well worth your time. The Dean and I , Clockwork Creep , I'm Mandy Fly Me , I'm not in Love.....to be honest, there's loads of great 10cc songs. Also, another great band .... Jellyfish. A band that should've been massive.

Graham Gouldman (bass) was a prolific songwriter and penned hits for the Hollies, Yardbirds, Herman's Hermits and loads more. There is a really good documentary by the group knocking around in which Gouldman recounts an episode of BBC's Top of the Pops TV show. At the time he was playing in the studio band as a backing player whilst on the next stage The Yardbirds were playing their No.1 hit 'For Your Love' which he wrote for them!
I love 10cc! Have seen them about 3 or 4 times. They played this album in its entirety. My personal favourite track is 'Baron Samedi' You've got to listen to; I'm Not in Love Blackmail Dreadlock Holiday Good Morning Judge Art for Art's Sake Rubber Bullets

One of my all time favourite tracks! _I've taken Lassie for walkies when she was the pup that vaudeville threw up..._
I have not heard this befare, but it contains all the things i like from the band! Great choice! Don’t hang up is wonderful!
They did rock, and they did beauty. You don't get too grabbed on the first listen. One of my favourite bands.
Among so many other things, best use of the black key gliss ever.
That was not a synthesizer that you heard. That was a guitar with a device called a 'GIZMO', invented by the guitar player, Lol Creme. It was an effects box attached directly to the body right over the bridge.
The 'synth' sound you refer to is actually a processed guitar sound (wah-wah creating the meow element). Eric Stewart was a very talented sound engineer as well as singer/musician and created examples of gorgeous guitar tones and effects on some of their tracks.
So glad you decided to take look at 10cc, really love the first four albums with members Kevin Godley, Lol Creme, Graham Gouldman and Eric Stewart, sadly after album four Godley & Creme left the band and Gouldman & Stewart carried on as 10cc, the first album in the new format was quite good but not quite to the standard of the first four albums, They had a lot of chart success in the UK in the 70s with tracks like Donna The Dean and I Rubber Bullets The Wall Street Shuffle Silly Love Life Is A Minestrone I'm Not In Love (A milestone track that i'm sure you will have heard) Art For Art Sake I'm Mandy Fly Me A few other great tracks would include Pretty much anything from "Sheet Music" & "The Original Soundtrack" including Old Wild Men, Baron Samedi, One Night In Paris, Blackmail, The Second Sitting For The Last Supper, Also from "How Dare You" the tracks How Dare You/Lazy Ways (These two should be played together) and Don't Hang Up, Somewhere In Hollywood is one of my favs with that beautiful guitar melody towards the end (yes, I believe it's guitar and not synth), One Night In Paris also has a similar cinematic feel, looking forward to more Justin ... nice work ... BTW I think the word you were looking for was "Scout" as in "Talent Scout" ...

"Don't Hang Up", "Wall Street Shuffle", "Un Nuit a Paris" and "Art For Art's Sake" should be on the short list. Although "Blackmail" deserves some notice.
I'd have to agree with a couple of posts that I'd put 10cc in the 'Art/pop/rock' genre. Quite a lot of these posts must be from people in the states, but growing up in England in the 70's, these guys had may many many chart hits, not just 'I'm not in love'. I always thought of them in the same way as ELO or Supertramp, a genre hopping mix of art/pop/rock/prog. For a while in the 80's 'Squeeze' filled the same niche (and I love Squeeze). I have seen 10cc live and they were 'proggier' live, probably because they could expand the songs and solo a bit more. I'm not so sure what Justin, or anyone or anyone in North America would make of 'Dreadlock Holiday', but now living in Australia, that song is played to death during the Cricket season, god help us if Australia is playing the West Indies, you might grow to hate the song, as it's played continuously on TV and radio 😱🙉
10cc were a top band of the 70s My favourite
Thanks Justin - I was one of the guys requesting this. There’s only one 10cc. The band hates to repeat itself, even within the same song. Studio masters and each of the four accomplished artists before they joined forces. Ahead of their time (yes, Queen did some borrowing). Theatrical is a good way to put it, but not only theatrical. Have fun!
Great band of four multi-instrumentalist lead singers from 72 to 76 ! After Kevin Godley and Lol Creme left, the band's music has never been the same. Although superb, sophisticated pop albums, Deceptive Bends (1977) and Bloody Tourists (1978) have lost some of that creative madness that Godley & Creme brought. From 1980 onwards 10cc music became more mainstream and less interesting. You should try the eight minute mini-epic "Une Nuit a Paris" ("One Night in Paris"). I think you would like this piece very much !
Omg I love it so much thanks for the great reaction

10cc before "the thing we do for love" is 600% better music. Experience yourself the first 4 albums til 1976. How dare You was their last.
I got into 10cc with Wall Street Shuffle, off the same album. (Of course, still relevant today.) The song is more Beatles-like, but they do have an art-pop slant: How Dare You? has some Zappa like moments, The Original Soundtrack is probably their masterpiece - with I'm Not In Love, and for theatrics, Une Nuit à Paris.
10cc are famous for their quirky eccentric songs especially most of the hits like Rubber Bullets, I'm Mandy Fly Me, Dreadlock Holiday, Life Is A Minestrone, Wall Street Shuffle, Donna to name but a few. But their music is so varied too.
Wowsa cant believe you are doing my fav eclectic band. Fly Mandy is awesome too
10cc's "I'm Not In Love" is one of the bestest tunes ever on late night radio.
Please check out some more! Rubber bullets, Worst band in the world, Baron Samedi, One night in Paris (all parts running into I’m not in Love would be an amazing reaction piece) Second sitting for the last supper, I’m Mandy fly me, Art for Arts sake, all packed full of intricate clever lyrics and musical twists. They were still successful after Godley and Creme left but were never quite the same band becoming more mainstream. Godley and Creme also had some great songs post 10cc. Under your thumb, an Englishman in New York, Wedding bells and Cry. For a really fun but clever song check out Godley and Cremes ‘snack attack’ always good for a laugh though it always makes me feel hungry.
One shouldn't forget the first album after Godley & Creme left. Deceptive Bends is a really good album and the closing suite Feel the Benefit is rather epic.
When it comes to the european audience, 10cc were kinda bundled together with Supertramp despite great and obvious differences. Guess it had to do with the pop-vibe in the prog/artrock as well as the ability to score some radio-hits. I love both bands' output from the 70's - but then I'm a prog-nerd....
I am not on Twitter, so this is the only place I can pass my two cents along. James Gang and Joe Walsh/Tommy Bolin should really be considered for first listens. Not only two of my favorite guitarists all time but Joe Walsh helped in starting a Cleveland based band that in the 70's was incredible live and dynamite and consistent with albums. James Gang Rides again is among my personal 20 best albums of all time. So funky, bluesy and flat out bangin'. Tommy Bolin came on after the first three albums by James Gang and filled in incredibly well. He died very early in life but left an incredible legacy working with bands like Deep Purple, Rainbow and of course James Gang. Bang is the album by his stay with the band I recommend. He was special but few know of him. James Gang though, is well worth the time and will fit very well into the wide range of things you like to hit on ur page. Cheers Justin, hope you get to read my little ramble....

Great review. If you want to listen to more 10cc you might want to try One Night in Paris or Art for Arts Sake, or if you're really ambitious try Godley and Creme's Consequences album - but only if you're brave lol.
While the band was recording "Sheet Music" during the day, Paul McCartney was using Strawberry Studios (Stockport, England) in the evenings to produce brother Mike's album, "McGear" (fall '74, Warner Bros. Records). Graham Gouldman (bass, vocals, rhythm guitar) remarked how 10cc's Kevin Godley used Paul's drum kit for their album, and how Paul's influence was certainly felt while making their album. In fact, in a 2006 interview, Godley said: "We'd really started to explode creatively, and didn't recognize any boundaries. We were buzzing on each other, and exploring our joint and individual capabilities. Lots of excitement and energy at those sessions and, more important, an innocence that was open to anything." Speaking of Graham Gouldman, JP, if you or your viewers don't know the assembled accomplishments of this songwriting and performing legend, he's worth discovering what you may have been missing! Still around at 74, he wrote "For Your Love" and "Heart Full of Soul" (Yardbirds), "Bus Stop" and "Look Through Any Window" for the Hollies, "Listen People" and "No Milk Today" for Herman's Hermits, and many more! From 1984-1990, Gouldman teamed up with the late Andrew Gold (Linda Ronstadt's band, plus his own solo work from the '70s) to form Wax (aka Wax UK in the US, to distinguish from a similarly-named American band at the time), a criminally under-heard band fronted by two stellar songwriters! Wax produced 3 albums for RCA. From their 1987 (and second) album, "American English," I highly recommend your new earworm, "Bridge to Your Heart," with memorable chorus and official video that used similar video-vanguard effects 10cc became known for, as well as stop-action effects reminiscent of Peter Gabriel's videos: kzread.info/dash/bejne/Y52ntKpydZy9cag.html
"Humbly eccentric" a good choice of words Justin. I'm not able to sum up this song (and much of the rest of this album) any better than you have on your first listen, good going. Take a look into the band members and you'll find many have had a huge influence (and input) on other artist, from songwriting to video production and a lot in-between. Their names crop up all over music history starting in the 60's right on into the 90's. A fun factoid (ladies please look away) is that the band got their name from a copious amount of male ejaculate. This has been both denied and confirmed by various band members (no pun intended). True or not, it sums up the humour and irreverance 10cc brought to many of their song lyrics. Thanks for another awesome reaction.

Old Wild Men is a splendid 10cc song 👍 I find a lot of their tracks are too clever for cleverness’ sake but Old Wild Men presses the emotional buttons.
Well now that's my 4th video from you in a row ! And I write the first comment (which isn't a real comment in fact !)…
10CC /Art For Art's Sake (1975) - Dreadlock Holiday (1978) - The Wall Street Shuffle (1974) GODLEY & CREME/Cry (1985)
If you get around to listening to "I'm Not In Love", listen to the album version (about six minutes), NOT the single version (about four minutes). Other recommendations: The Dean and I Wall Street Shuffle Silly Love Une Nuit à Paris Blackmail I Wanna Rule the World I'm Mandy Fly Me Don't Hang Up 10cc actually owned their own studio, so they spent an inordinate amount of time experimenting with various sounds and techniques. This combined with the fact they could all sing meant that hardly any of their songs sounded alike, and listening to them is never predictable or boring.
10cc are a fascinating band, they have an interesting history. They were Neil Sedaka's band when he made his comeback in the seventies. Half the band were pop song writers and had had hits in the US, like Groovy Kind of Love, while the other half (who became Godley and Creme) were art school experimental types which nearly always leads to accessible creative music if they're good enough.
I've never heard that one before! 10cc were big in UK in the 70s with a string of hits. Catchy tunes and clever lyrics were their motif. Biggest hit, a no. 1, was - I'm not in love. (You really should review THAT one!) Also released - Rubber Bullets, Wall St. shuffle, I'm Mandy fly me, Under your thumb, and a dozen others. Great band quite original. ( Their first hit - Neanderthal Man was released under the group name Hot legs, but it is not indicative of their output as 10cc. A lot of heavy drumming on it recorded when they were testing the recording set up!)
Briliant and fun lyrics on almost every song, even on several albums after the split. ........
Graham Gouldman wrote For your love and Heart full of soul for the Yardbirds and Eric Stewart Had a few hit songs with the Mindbenders.
One of my fav or tracks, from this Very British band, is Feel the benefit, from the Deceptive Bends album. It’s their most progressive tracks IMO. They”middle part” is the pop bit, with the two “book ends” being wonderful pieces of music, IMO of course 😀
UK bands from that period were so much more creative than most of the rest of the world. Apart from a few standout acts that could rival them.
Excellent choice! If you have seen Guardians Of The Galaxy, that would be the most likely recent place for you to have heard their biggest hit "I'm Not In Love". But instead of that (excellent) song, I would highly recommend that you try their song "Feel The Benefit".
I used to listen to them, and I liked their 'different yet easy going' melodies and quite smart lyrics. 'Rubber Bullets' comes to mind, and of course 'I'm Not In Love', 'I'm Mandy Fly Me,' and 'The Things We Do For Love'.
Three years on an Justin has never gone back to this wonderful group. If there is a return may I recommend "How dare you" as a long listen? Or " The original soundtrack"? IMO the two best 10cc albums and I admittedly stuck with them all the way up to "Meanwhile". The loss of Godley & Creme detracted from the experimental aspect of the group and the overall Singles sound became more pop orientated, but there are still some excellent tracks on later albums.
In a similar vein: _Brand new day_ from _Original Soundtrack,_ in a different vein, _Blackmail_ from the same album.
Love this band. Try Art for Art's Sake, I"m Mandy Fly me, Good Morning Judge for a starter...
I'm sure if you listened to a greatest hits compilation that you would recognise many of their songs. A band full of talent and great songs. Godley & Creme are also successful producers and video makers, while
Hey JP I have one for you One Time by King Crimson. Keep up the good work, love your reactions.
P.S. Loved the way you squonked off set at the end!

Hahaha thank you :D
Interesting choice to start the 10cc journey. I would start with the third album which has their biggest hit I’m Not in Love and also the ever popular Life is a Minestrone. I kid you not. Great band. 👌👌
Godley & Creme - Gouldman & Stewart (the first couple more experimental, the 2nd more pop) Great when they were all together. But Godley & Creme were my favorites
10cc Justin... 😊 Really good band. Clever lyrically, great harmonies too. This sounds so good, funny. I really hope you take this album on Justin. 👍 I liked this a lot at one time butty. Sheet Music is a very good starting point imo. Justin., you surprise me all the time butty. In a good way, bravo butty. 😊 😊 😊

I’m not in love is a must do
Check out Godley and Creme’s album L. It’s really brilliant prog rock.
I've only heard their hits. This is a bit different, but I liked it.
And here's another suggestion: _Roads to Moscow_ by Al Stewart on his _Past present and future_ album. There is no other song like it. The last bar is exquisite.

The whole of the 'Past, present and future' album is excellent, 'Nostradamus'is another epic. I know that 'Year of the cat' and 'Time Passages' were hits in the US, but as a Brit, those earlier albums were just as good.

I’ve only recently explored further than ‘Year of the Cat’ and ‘Time Passages’. Wow... what an exquisite songwriter. He’s the master of catchy melodies and so much more than ‘boy meets girl’ lyrics.
Good review....

Thank you :)
They had loads of quirky pop hits in UK. Think they invented the melatron with a thousand voices on it. Almost as perfectionist layering as the Dan. But a fun band. This is not typical
Hi JP. 10cc. Now there's an interesting band. I think you'll enjoy this journey. They made some wonderful pop songs aswell - but always with a twist. Enjoy mate.
