1095: The Bloodiest Year Of The First Crusade | Holy Wars | Chronicle

In 1095 AD, when West-Roman Christianity was spreading out in all directions, the First Crusade set out to recapture the Holy Land from Islamic rule. The 11th century the Seljuk takeover of the region threatened the local Christian populations, pilgrimages from the West, and the Byzantine Empire itself. It was not a battle of cultures, not a struggle against Islam, but a chaotic confrontation of warlords and princes.

Its an oversimplification to say that the Crusades were about fighting against Islam. The Crusades were about regaining lost Christian territory, liberating native Christians in the Holyland, and securing sacred sites of pilgrimage. The reason why they were fighting against Islam has to do with the fact that Muslim armies conquered Christian lands during the expansion period. The Holyland, Anatolia, North, and Africa were all Christian lands before Islam, but it wasn't just territories in the middle east and Africa that they conquered. They also conquered the whole of the Iberian peninsula with the exception of a small area in the mountains, parts of southern France, the whole island of Sicily, and parts of Italy. The Crusades were a response to that. Western Europe was now powerful enough to recapture these lost territories and that's what they did. Now if the Crusades were about Islam itself then why did the Crusaders not outlaw Islam in the Crusader states? Why didn't they force mass conversions? Islamic chroniclers during the Crusades had written that many Muslims in the Crusader states preferred living in Christian lands to Muslim-controlled regions. Another Muslim chronicler wrote about his Templar friends and about how they would set him up in a quiet area in their stronghold to say his prayers in peace. He also wrote about how a newly arrived Templar from Europe kept interrupting his prayer because he wasn't facing east, because he had never seen a Muslim pray in any direction other than east, he didn't realize they were supposed to pray towards Mecca. then a few of the veteran knights saw this the corrected him. So its just not true that the Crusades were about Islam, the Crusaders were actually fairly tolerant, especially when the children of the First Crusade, who were born in the Hoyland grew up.

The first question you should ask those who criticize the first crusade is "what's your alternative? ISIS like Muhammadan took 2/3 of Christian Land from Iran, Anatolia, North Africa, Spain, France, Italy (the reason that the Vatican have that wall) and keep attacking Christians for 400 years enslaving them keeping their women as sex slave and children became a slave for life", you will notice that those who criticize the Crusades will have no response if you ask this question.

@@ungas024 I don't think those people realize how quickly Islam expanded. It did so through conquest and forced conversion. If it weren't for Charlemange's grandfather, Charles Martel then Western Europe might be Islamic today. I doubt any of these people who criticize the Crusades are even aware that Muslim Jihadists nearly conquered modern day France.

@@adamwee382 It was an Anti-Catholic sentiment during the enlightenment and it came as an anti-Christian sentiment when the secularist athiest came into play during the french revolution all the way to the Godless Marxist Communism, it might also because that the government who got attacked by Islamist in the past have cowered in fear and go into full force against the Christians in General lying how good Islam is and it is a religion of peace when in fact these Muhammadans are like Nazi Germany in Steroids. Athiest, Marxism and Islam are trying to white wash the past. You couldn't classify this as a world war, because the parties involved were relatively close to one another, and no other parts of the world were involved. The majority of the fighting was centered around the Middle East and Europe as well, further adding to it being a 'local' or continental war.

I really don't like when documentaries overlay the original voice and the translation like that, or at least the original voice has to be much lover in volume... german is my native language so the brain has trouble concentrating on one or the other. I'm sure it's like that for other languages native speakers as well when an expert in their language comes on... i don't understand why this is done. Please consider at least a more contrasting change in volume.

we say "Salam aleykum" not as "Yoke be upon you" but "Peace be upon you". Islam is ultimative noun from root "SLM" (and used in Torah, Gospel and Quran - in Old Testament "and don't die except as Muslims"). O Allah, You are As-Salam, and from You are - Peace, blessed are You Possessor of majesty and honour we are Your servants and see submission to You as Your honour to us, by which we are blessed.

@@sidjoosin6549 I understand that "Islam" is an Arabic root word that can, with the addition of vowels and constants have many different meanings. So Salam, which is a modified version of the word Islam indeed means peace. But that when the root word is used as a purely root word the literal translation is "submission"

  • @sidjoosin6549

@@LegalesePodcast no, root is S-L-M (99% roots consist of 3 letters). From this root - Salam, Muslim, Salim, Salman, Solomon (Suleyman), Hebrew "Shalom" and Aramaic "Salam", Jeru-salem, etc. Also from SLM comes verbal noun "Islam" (like Idris from DRS - "to teach" or Ihsan from HSN - "to do good", etc). But in principle, why "submission" is bad translation for "Islam"? "Submission" in English means by someone's will or, if not, by self-control - but always against some passion or desire. One who under submission - have no peace in his heart, something opposite of real meaning of "Peace". Look how "submission" differs to what reffered as term "Islam" in Quran: "Whomsoever Allah wills to guide - He opens their chest for Islam ✓ , ..." (6;125) "Can be misguided one be like those whose hearts Allah has opened for Islam ✓, so they are enlightened by their Lord?" (39;22)
