109. ROGD Survival Guide: Strategic Advice for Concerned Parents of Trans-Identified Youth

In a rare solo episode, I reflect on a few key themes that have emerged during the course of my work consulting with with parents who are worried about losing their kids to the gender craze. Join me as I share insights on how to help families facing this challenge. When is it actually a bad idea to tell your kids about the harms of sex trait modification? How can parents express concerns to headstrong adolescents without pushing them away? What strategies can you employ to understand their perspectives while maintaining your own boundaries? Tune in to discover the power of strategic apologizing and the importance of listening without necessarily agreeing.
We'll also explore the impact of porn and social media on youth's perceptions of gender and sexuality. How does exposure to certain media influence their beliefs and behaviors? And what part do male and female role models play in shaping their identities? Plus, we'll touch on the dynamics of splitting and triangulation within families facing the gender crisis. How can parents navigate these complex relationships to support children effectively? And what common pitfalls must be avoided in order to prevent the rift from deepening?

Thank you. The world needs people like you! I have to add, I sometimes want to shout from the rooftops (although I obviously wouldn’t) that: it’s okay to be gay! and: It’s okay to be a lesbian! It’s okay to be a tomboy or a more feminine leaning boy! It’s okay to be different! You don’t have to go through all these horrible things, and pretend to be the opposite sex! You can be you, and that’s okay! I feel so sorry for the kids and their parents going through this awful situation. So, the work you do, is of great importance. ❤

I would like to add to this the importance of taking care of your nervous system. I am a breathwork practitioner and I help parents to get out of fight/flight state with breathwork. For many parents, it is very scary when they get the news that their child wants to transition. It's almost like getting a scary diagnosis. Take care of the nervous system, practice self-care.

Stephanie, thank you for all that you do. I have been saying the same things you stated since about 2012. Unfortunately, the am the living example of what you say towards the end about the daughter growing up and seeing her mom getting walked all over. :( I was the parent (and only family member) who would not affirm or conform to her "identity" (which is mostly due to the trauma she experienced early in her childhood) and everything I would say to her or her father, was dismissed and I was even told I was the one who needed therapy. There's a lot to this. But I just wanted to thank you for confirming what I've known intuitively and keep trying to share with my daughter (she is 26 as of this posting 5/13/24) and family. It gives me strength to keep at it. I hope that more therapists will wake up and do their jobs properly instead of affirming the trans-money train.

Just wanted to follow up that we tried the "Tell me what I'm missing" approach and it WORKED. We were able to have a conversation about difficult things for the first time in a long while.
