I have just purchased the new AWD RAV4 Hybrid Cruiser (White). Although am currently in lockdown and working from home (and not going anywhere except to the shops and back) I am enjoying driving this vehicle. Although at times it can sound noisy when the foot is planted, it is most of the time quiet when driving sedately. I have taken the car on a couple of country trips including off road and surprised at how well it manages the uneven surfaces from sand to stones ard rock. The fuel economy is amazing compared to my previous diesel SUV attaining around 5.L/100km on the highway. I am getting around 900kms per tank full. There is a fair amount of technology which I felt somewhat daunted by when I first picked up the car, but after driving this car around my local area have found it to be easy to use. It is certainly a fair amount of money but oh so worth it!

Really good review. You’ve got a great, comprehensive format that never gets boring. I noticed your survey on hardness was pretty clear that people care about it. No other review channel provides an objective measure on this. An idea you could consider as you get more measurements on different models is to put up a little table which compares the car you’re reviewing with its competitors.

Great idea and we love the feedback. We'll work on developing a 'Doug Score' style spreadsheet so you can see all the different models. In addition, we'll also show you the nearest two cars against the tested vehicle to give you an idea of what league it's in 😄

CarExpert A Doug-style score would be good. He mixes in some subjective measures. It’s a good way of quantifying his expert opinion. Another channel that lines up similar models as part of the review is Alex on Autos, though his presentation is a fair bit drier. I don’t know why I watch so many car reviews. I’m not looking to buy one soon! 🤷🏻

I’m glad you mentioned the lack of heads up display. Here in Australia it’s really needed. A few other negative points I see is the passenger manual seat, no ventilated seats or full sized sunroof. The interior could use a few items just to make it a little more special too, much like the Mazda CX-5. Bar that it’s a brilliant vehicle and light years ahead of the previous model. Great review 👍🏽

Plus, it has a small glove box, which can be hardly closed with vehicle manual and service books insode. Also, a lack of illuminated window switches, side mirror controller are annoying at night. Otherwise, I agree that it is a great vehicle (it is definitely light years ahead of the previous model, which was my least favourite) especially with the hybrid power train that is above my expectation. Really love to drive mine every day for commute.

Ordered a silver Cruise AWD the other day after checking out a number of reviews and taking one for a drive. I currently have a Honda CRV - top of the line that's 2.5 years old and its been a good comfortable car - my second of the same model but I wanted to upgrade to a Hybrid and Toyota has had many years of experience with this technology thus going with them. Paul you did a great job with this review, covered most items however the sound system is what we often listen to when driving and I feel you should give a fraction more attention during each review - I know you touched on it but just a bit more eg how easy to set up, quality of sound, etc.

It has been a week since I ordered my RAV4 Hybrid from NZ, and I am so excited! Despite I was told to wait for 3 to 5 months for the arrival of the car (as there is none available in the country), which I wouldn't have done with any other cars, I thought it was definitely worth to wait after test driving the RAV4 hybrid. Never thought I would buy either RAV4, hybrid or AWD mid-sized SUV few years ago, but it was so impressive. It would be fun to drive along with my family's latest Honda CR-V Sport Sensing, as these are the competitors in the market. Btw, I purchased RAV4 in Ruby (red) colour after being inspired by your video Paul (and it really blew my mind after seeing it on the road). Your review has affected and helped me to decide. Thanks for the great review Paul and the team!

A thoroughly enjoyable review by someone who obviously enjoys his work - you even manage to sound happy when pointing out some of the flimsier parts of the vehicle's interior. (I too, thought this was a let-down for a Toyota - I noted that where the pieces of the console met at the start of the cupholders, the join was very poor and was only going to get worse, when I looked at one recently.) I don't think you miss anything of importance, and you speak with an easy, good-natured, comfortable manner. I think you manage to be as thorough as Matt Watson, but without the (at-times strained) humour. One thing I found off-putting was how you repeatedly point to the object/item you are talking about and then tap it: I get the feeling that without that tapping, you believe nobody will know what you are referring to. I feel otherwise and an "un=tapped" review would not lose clarity, because the camerawork and commentary puts the subject in clear view, but this is a small criticism. I look forward to many more enjoyable reviews on this channel. Keep up the good work!

Enjoyed the review Paul,up to your usual great standard. We have ordered a white Rav4 Cruiser Hybrid 4wd last Sunday. Around 12months wait for delivery so our car will be the newer version being available from October 2022. Like you we were very impressed with the comfort and easy usability of the car we test drove. I've always regarded Toyotas as uninteresting appliances but this car with the improved suspension system that makes the car enjoyable to drive has won me over. Never ever thought I would say this about a Toyota, but there you are!

I have an older 2009 RAV and it feels like a new car, super smooth on the road and plenty of zip. Great cars the RAVs. Just a great wagon - can do virtually anything. I didn’t specifically target a RAV, and needed a 12mth fill in car, but based on how good this one is, seriously considering trading up to a new hybrid Great review mate

I was looking for a more reliable wagon alternative to my old Volvo V50. It was nickle and diming me to death. Eventually decided, even though I was looking for a wagon instead of a crossover, on a 2012 Rav4. Great car that fit my needs the best.

I really like the idea of these and can see why they’re popular. Question though - would you buy a new RAV4 (which are quite pricey) or better off getting a used RX450h (which have excellent reliability and fairly good economy - not 4cyl Camry though)...?? I’d probably go the RX450

In Canada the AWD hybrid can tow 750kg as opposed to the 480kg Paul mentioned in the review. The Trail (Adventure in the USA) model will tow 1500kg because of the dynamic torque vectoring on that model only. I've watched countless youtube videos on the Rav4's..... sometimes it pays off mate. lol

Even your review on the hybrid edge 2022 has maybe three more refinements over the 2020 cruiser. I now definitely see the value in buying the top spec. if possible. The added features are great and very practical. Used to think top spec depreciated more. Not with this car ! It’s held its value if not gone up a little albeit shortage of supply issues contributing.

CarExpert - Sadly, it is my understanding that Toyota Australia have indicated that they won’t be bringing the PHEV version ( known as the “Prime”) into Australia for some inexplicable reason. It has just been released in the United States, and as you can imagine the demand for it is astronomical, however, Toyota are only making around 5,000 units available in the U.S. in 2020 !!! Absolutely crazy, given that they could easily sell 20-40 times that number due to its popularity. It’s an AWD vehicle, with a pure EV range of approx 60kms on a full charge and a 0-100 km/hr time of around 6 seconds !! I actually believe that it could be a partial competitor to the full EV Tesla Model Y SUV, for those people that want to go electric around town, but are concerned about the potential for range anxiety on a road trip - the true “ goldilocks” EV solution. I just can’t understand why Toyota, the worlds largest car manufacturer, can’t produce enough units, by a large margin, of a mainstream car that is in such high demand by consumers!!! Surely they have the manufacturing resources to build enough batteries and electric motors, given that they have been developing and producing hybrids now for over 20 years since the first Prius was introduced.

The Melbourne dealer advised that there's a global parts shortage (notably computer chips) plus the massive global demand and Toyota can't keep up. It’s a Toyota so I fully expect it to be reliable and cheap to service. 2. Doing mostly country miles now, fuel consumption has gone up to 5.6 l/100 km. 3. Active cruise control Bad points 1. Not enough storage pockets up front. 2. Spacesaver spare 3. Lane assist. Car wanders too much and LA drops out frequently 4. I've had my RAV4 Cruiser Hybrid for six months and am loving it. A couple of things, however. I have never seen 4.8L/100km milage. Predominantly driving in the inner city, the best I've seen is 6.2L. I wish the reverse camera had better resolution as I find it hard to see what's going on there sometimes especially at night, when it's raining or in shadow. The reverse side mirrors ("wing mirrors as you call them) don't fold back automatically when you lock the car like a lot of other modern cars. There is a button inside the car that does fold them, but you must remember to do it before you get out of the car...and finally the light in the boot is too small for the size of the boot. Otherwise, it's a dream to drive. Much nimbler than my old 2016 CX-5 by a long way. I love the way it subtly teaches you how to drive more efficiently with "drive ratings". It becomes a bit of a game after a while.
