1000 photos later: iPhone 15 Pro Max is still missing something
Ғылым және технология
Even though Apple put its best camera yet in the $1,200 iPhone 15 Pro Max (it does astrophotography better than the Pixel 7 Pro??). So to put the company's first 5x telephoto lens, USB-C port, and ProRes Log filming capabilities to the test I took it on a 1000 photos road trip through Southern California. It’s a great system, but it’s missing the last piece of being a “Pro” system. Presented by @Jeep

I am digging the first gen iphone's colours on their photos. Give it a really nice retro feel to it.
One of the camera reviews I look forward to when a new phone comes out. The 15 pro max is a big improvement over 13 pro. I'm very happy with it.

I also went from 13 Pro to 15 Pro Max, and man, it's such a good phone. Loving everything about it. My only complaint would be that sometimes, depending on lighting, the 5x photos can have a lot of noise in them. I think it's just a software thing and they will hopefully tweak it in a software update. It's a brand new lens and sensor combination so probably just some fine tuning required.
@elimoto8157

Coming from a 13 pro, the upgrade is definitely worth it for someone who's quite a poweruser of the camera. Aside from that though, my previous model feels the same.

@@krishanu905 yeah for everyday use the size of the max aint just comfortable. I'd expect the 5x NOT to be present even in next year's pro model, rather, its think they're gonna bump the mp count on the 3x to make it digitally (and viably) crop into a 5x like what they did with the 2x

Going to put out an unpopular opinion: that’s a very fair sponsored segment, one that was brief and said whether or not it had editorial control over the video - we love a good disclosure!
I love how you combined the whole video with the first gen iphone’s camera. I thought it was from a film camera, but after knowing that, this video deserves more appreciation ❤
As much as I understand and agree with your missing something statement, I am happy the UI of the main camera app remains simple, allowing for Halide / FilmicPro / Blackmagic camera app to exist. I wouldn't want Apple to cannibalise those too.

It wouldn’t be too difficult for Apple to implement a Pro Mode since Samsung does it.
Awesome review and big shoutout to Becca for taking the camera into the wild with some beautiful scenery and not giving the usual tech-y minimalist room setup. Beautiful content!
1- Brilliant review. 2- Of course, because it’s Becca, a photographer’s photographer with amazing on-screen presence and a lovely sense of humour. 3- I never comment on ads. I hate ads. But the Jeep integration? Presented by? Retro and classt and not at all nauseating. Hats off to whoever sold that to Jeep (and to whoever at Jeep / its agency who had the courage to back such great editorial). More classy ads (that are clearly ads and not sleaze masquerading as editorial), please. After all, Verge has gotta pay the staff. And much, much more Becca, please.
Amazing work Becca. This video had me glued to the screen, and I've already watched a dozen iPhone 15 camera reviews. Truly outstanding.
I love love love Becca's reviews. And honestly, I know it must have been a bummer to lose the footage due to the wrong cable... explaining one needs the right cable is a VERY important thing people have to know about. So actually it is perfect that it happened.

THANK YOU SO MUCH for talking about how "7 lenses" doesn't capture the same changes in distortion, DoF etc. that you'd get from actually having 7 lenses, regardless of whatever special processing Apple is doing with these in-between shots. As a photography student, this particular tagline from Apple has been really irking me. 😅
God Becca is so good at making reviews. In the post-Dieter tech world she’s one of the best remaining, always improving always going into the details people care about. Awesome stuff

Thank you Becca for such a in-depth and comprehensive review that covered all of the things that I would want to know about. I agree camera control is the much maligned feature still missing from this device and hopefully is included in the future. Your videos are my favorite currently of the videos produced by The Verge and prior to your productions was Dieter Bohn. Keep up the fantastic work!
Becca's videos are the best!
Great job Becca. The amount of time and footage taken for this review is deeply appreciated. I like this in depth and personal review also.
Great video! This got into the nerdy details I want to know about. Good on The Verge for getting a sponsor like Jeep. I did think it was funny that the two KZread ads that played during this video were ads FOR this video. Very meta.
Shoot in Raw and one stop under on night shots. Fixes the noise issue and the Raw file has enough dynamic range to bring up the shadows in post. Generally no overblown highlights this way either.
Solid real world/life review. Thanks Becca & Team! 😍
*REBECCA forgot something.* She did not mention the fact that Apple’s stabilisation is much better than Samsung’s, what makes telephoto shots way more detailed in less than ideal lighting conditions. This Apple’s weaker optical zoom producers sharper images. Also, Apple makes portrait shots automatically and much faster, which Rebecca also forgot to mention as otherwise her Samsung bias narrative would crumble.
Honestly the 15 Pro Max cameras are just incredibly fun to shoot with. Even if you're just posting them to social media, having all these different "lenses" really can up your social media game. It's also really helpful if your job requires a lot of photo taking.

What a lovely, fun, beautiful video! Love the editing. Makes me excited about the new cameras.
Great helpful review (and nice pics), thanks!
If you shoot in ProRAW then open the file in RAW Power, you’ll get access to additional raw-only controls such as boost and black levels and raw sharpening. So if you turn a lot of these down, you’re basically removing the over-processed look that Apple bakes into their HEIF files. No other raw processor does this, not even Lightroom
Amazing quality & video, great work!
I really love your reviews. Can't wait to see your Iphone vs Google camera comparison. Keep up the great work.
The editing is brilliant, this is such a good video !
Completely agree! Really hoping that the camera app gets a rework soon. Every year the cameras get updated, but it’s time they gave the software some love! Would love some actual control in the native app. 🙏🏼 Please Apple.
Artistic and beautiful video. Thanks for making it!
Possibly my favorite review of all time. Sending much love from Italy Becca!
God I love your style of review, especially the hand writing things going on, almost like a documentary film, keep up the good work❤
so impressed with the video, i dont usually comment but u guys really made a great work! love these types of videos
Agreed! Racking focus is really all I want out of the native camera app
For manual control of the camera right, did you know that Sony Xperias provide them natively with three pro apps?
Hi thanks for the update on I phone & camera can I run the home & check it from home??? Thanks. If not is the14 be a good one to stay with. The basic menu?
This was an awesome review, thank you!
Indeed, there ARE some great apps for manual controls for the camera on iPhone. We hope it stays the realm of indie camera apps :) Absolutely fantastic review, Becca. Top notch.
What an awesome review, love how you film and talk about the device. Besides great information and experience, the style really spoke to me. If you had ever had the 3x zoom, did you miss it? I just can’t decide which I’d use more, 3x or 5x lens.
I loved your review, Becca, they're always the best!
This is one of the best videos I've watched in a while
i think the video soon needs a version 2 comparing 15 pro max with the latest pixel 8 pro. Looking forward for the next video soon :) Thanks for doing the extensive play around with camera and putting out all the details for us
It's really bad that any zoom below the telephoto is just a very small crop of the main lens. Tony Northup has a very good explanation video on it
One of the best reviewers on KZread or anywhere I legit wait for these videos after ever major release
Love the review it feels more natural than some other reviews. One thing can you mention the shooting location
As a photo professional it’s always funny to see/hear people talk about “lenses” or “megapixels”on an iPhone as if they’re the same as the ones for real cameras lol.
About the "7 lenses" thing. In terms of framing they act like a native lens at that focal length would look like. The issue is that you're only using part of the sensor, so it acts as a smaller sensor with a slower lens. That means that the low light performance is worse and the depth of field is not as shallow. Also obviously it's lower resolution. So even if the 35mm crop produces the same resolution as the 1x option, it's of lower quality. There's not really a difference between shooting with a smaller sensor vs a larger sensor and cropping in.

OMG, Becca your videos are truely next level! Thank you!!
Taking photos in monochromatic lighting is very tough, especially red wavelength. Those shots are crazy.
Thank you for the info on the recording to an external drive and the choppy footage! Also, simple solution for the camera app for regular folks and experts: Apple could just put a little oval PRO button in a corner. The main camera app stays the same or is even dumbed down a little and if you hit that PRO button, the camera app turns on all features (including peak meters for sound, ISO, aperture, shutter speed, white balance, etc.). So then pros can tweak to their hearts desire and newbies can just shoot with the regular setup, not unlike how DSLRs have different modes and full manual.
haha Becca. was waiting for your review•• love it! awesome!
I like that little speedbump with the wrong cable. Real-world problems that would have happened to others if you didn't point it out here. Great video!

Apple has a really difficult situation. So many Pro options and different capture capabilities… but they have to hide them because they would confuse the average consumer. I wish they released a “Camera Pro” app in the App Store with all the controls, and further simplify the stock option. Amazing review as always from Becca ❤

enjoyed the video, a joy to watch.
What I don't understand are the specifications that I find on these lenses. I see e.g. that the telephoto lens is 120mm, it has an aperture of f/2.8. Since aperture is defined as "focal distance / lens opening", the lens opening should be at least be 42 mm. Every blind horse can see that the lens is not so big. So what am I missing? Is this some kind of marketing trick to make up better specs then what is possible?
The 1st gen iPhone's photos look amazing. The colors are very true to life, no oversharpening, no lifted shadows, retained texture.
I hate "portrait" mode and "cinematic" mode. I wish I could disable them so they don't clutter up my camera app. Luckily, you can disable the automatic portrait mode they introduced with iPhone 15/15 Pro.
Great cable tip, thanks !
Great video and review
One of if not the best camera reviews of the Pro Max, thank you!
Please do this for the pixel 8 and 8 pro. Or even the iphone 15 and 15 plus. This type of focused photography review is so much more in depth and informative than dedicating a minute or two within a phone review.
I too would like to see an advanced setting for people who need to tweak their shots and of course a way to save multiple settings. I take a lot of photos on my job for reports and I deal with a lot of lighting issues because I’m on the floor walking around reviewing stuff. I keep a flashlight handy to lighten up areas for decent photos but sometimes I think because the phones cameras have AI or something I want to disable so I can slowly zoom in by hand rather than the AI. Currently on iPhone 14 Pro Max getting the 15 soon.
We always love you Becca! Thanks for another great review
Good video as always. It stood out a bit that the new iPhone was being compared against last year's Pixel the day before the new one was being announced (after having 'pro' camera features and a more light-sensitive main sensor leaked), though! Unfortunate timing but perhaps worth highlighting.
that Adobe camera app Marc Levoy keeps talking about could help a lot when it comes to pro features and having control. I think it comes out in 2024 though
What is an average file size of the picture?
I got to say... You did an amazing job in this review. Congratulations!

love the camera review!

Doubt they would put all the settings in the camera app. They would most likely come out with a separate app, or even a Final Cut for iPhones with a camera mode.
