I would have exchanged the black b1 bishop for the d3 knight without thinking about it. The b1 square was very precarious for the bishop. It was always in danger of being trapped.

Absolutely, also it seemed strange to me that black was hell bent on taking that knight in the first place, the one resting on b1, with his developed bishop, doesn't make any sense.

excellent analysis. But ok, I fail to see why in the study game, the original shalob(?) defense, and consequently the whole thing, why after queens are exchanged, black would contemplate taking the knight with the black bishop. Surely with the queens off the board you do want to preserve material, and so taking the bishop with the knight, seems odd as ok I haven't checked but I don't see anything immediately wrong with white capturing back that bishop with the rook. Otherwise at some point this game looks quite exciting as there is a variation where all the heavy hitters are off the board (queens and rooks), so its up to the kids i.e. the bishops and knights to fight for freedom, liberty and the pursuit of happiness and so perhaps a Wild Bunch / The Outsiders game :)

I feel like this is only a position a GM would put himself in. As a beginner, exchanging an inactive minor peace against an active one while doubling white pawns? I would take that deal all day. It is weird to see how much more valuable bishops are to high rated players.
