Ludwig Drums arguably makes the best metal snares of all time. At the least, they make the most iconic snare drums of all time. From the Supraphonic to the Black Beauty and everything in between, they're mainstays in recording studios and on concert stages around the world.
Today, we're going to look at two lesser known models from the 1930s. The first is the Ludwig & Ludwig Super, which is the precursor to the Super-Sensitive. The second is the Ludwig & Ludwig Pioneer, which is a thin nickel over brass shell that was more economical than their heavier brass shells on the Black Beauty snare drums of that era. Both the Super and the Pioneer are wonderful drums, and I hope you get a kick out of hearing them in my little video.
In this chip, I used Turkish Cymbals 15" Millennium Hi Hats, 20 Meta Brilliant Crash, a 22" Millennium Ride, and a 24" Prototype Special Dry Extra Thin Ride. Big thanks to Turkish Cymbals USA for lending me the couple snares highlighted in this video!
Audio was captured with two Universal Audio Apollo x8p interfaces using 1073 preamp modeling. Mics include:
- SE Electronics V-Kick (Kick In) - Beyer Dynamic Opus 65 (Kick Out)
- Shure Unidyne III SM57 (Snare Top)
- Rode NT55 w/ Cardioid Capsule (Snare Top)
- Audio-Technica ATM650 (Snare Bottom)
- Sennheiser MD-421 (Each Tom)
- AKG C414 TLII Pair (Overheads)
- Apex 210B Ribbon into Soyuz Launcher (Room)
- Shure 588SB (Vocal)
I use Logic Pro X, Waves Audio plugins, and I enjoy consuming salted potato chips.
And that cool mic cable? It comes from Sorry Cables in LA. - www.sorrycables.com/

Nice. I recently got a '23 Ludwig 5x14 NOB with the 2-piece brass shell and single flange hoops w/ 8-lugs. I can't get the thing to sound bad at any tuning. I think the bearing edges that fold back and are welded into the shell give it the unique tone...creates 'sound chambers' that resonate in a cool way. If you take off all the hardware (including lugs, throw-off, etc.) and hit the bare shell with a stick it sounds like a church bell ringing. Very cool pure tone sound! I found a Remo coated CS head helped dial it in just right while leaving just enough room for some nice overtones. The NOB shell really does have a nice gold hue to it when sitting next to something chrome. Favorite fruit...a nice crispy green apple or blueberries.

Personally I like a simple strainer as well but what's crazy is I watched this video Friday night, then yesterday (Saturday afternoon) I saw a bunch of drums on the market place for $50 I notice one looked like a Ludwig SS. I get there and get a closer look as the pictures on line weren't great. It was identical to the first drum, from what I'm told mine is a mid 30's Ludwig silver anniversary... 50 bucks, I'm still in shock haha just weird I had just watched this video haha
