Holloway Debraal INC built a Jeep Comanche Motorhome, 1987 only 5 were made and only 3 are know to exist. I have 1 with only 83k miles on it. Going to freshen it up, undo some previous retrofits, add some 21st century upgrades, make it solar friendly, and hit the road or the off road (Its a Jeep and yes a 4x4). Who knows I might get lucky and find a 4 legged friend to ride along.

Did you ever freshen up that Jeep Comanche? If so did you take it off road? My late husband and I had several different RVs during our 40+ years together and also dreamed about a 4X4 but never managed it.
Today's Camper Trailers, and Motorhomes sure started from humble beginnings
Aghhh the good ol days!!!! Back when one adult had to work and was more than enough for toys, food , etc…..
I'd like to own a teardrop woody.

GMC Motorhome - front wheel drive chasis - good bones to build on. Airstreams are beautiful. Fun collection. Thank you.
These vehicles need to be brought back into production.

We had a 15’ Shasta in aqua and white. Good times in New England and Atlantic Provinces, Canada.
I`m still the proud owner of 20 ft 1972 Explorer with dodge running gear 413 ci bluprinted engine 727 transmission. It passes everything on a hill. Beautiful layout. Only downside was plywood sides covered in vinyl, lots of exterior maintenance. This article reminds me of a friend that used to own a Cortez 24 ft with a 225 slant 6, what hoot!

I am surprised that you did not include the Bluebird Wanderlodge in this video. I own the first of 10 prototypes built in 1964. The first production model happened mid 1965. I have repaired, replaced, and restored mine, and now live in it full-time. It is the perfect apartment on wheels. I have set in Alabama for the past three years, and due to weather, I am now having to pay attention to the exterior once again. I have photos if you are interested in adding it to a future video. Thanks, Freddie

I bet ya I include on the next classic camper video. I just hope there is media out there with interior images too. That's the challange making these classic or vintage anything videos. The pictures are usually very hard to come by. I have spent hrs/days just trying to find interiors on several of these campers. A lot of good ones I didn't include for that reason. Thanlks for the suggestion though, I appreciate that.
This is just amazing 👏 ❤

I went on my first camping trip when I was five years old in a then brand new 1964 Airstream Overlander Land Yacht International travel trailer that was owned by friends of my family. I would never have dreamed at the time, but that trailer would one day become mine as unbeknownst to me, I purchased it from its second owners in 1995. I have owned that trailer for over 27 years now, and will likely keep it as long as I am able to trave. Over the years, I have had some minor restoration completed, but it still is mostly very well preserved original as is my 1978 Argosy Minuet 6.0 Metre that I purchased from its original owner in 2002. During the interim, I camped with my parents in a 1969 Sunway 8.5-foot cabover truck camper mounted on a 1969 Chevrolet C-20 Pickup and my aunt in a 1970 Volkswagen Westfalia Campmobile, My Airstream and Argosy are definitely my favorites for their versatility when traveling.

Those GMC motorhomes were the real deal. They were front-wheel drive, so the deck height was very low. You didn't have to climb steep stairs to get inside. The plumbing was copper tubing, so it never broke. The build quality was awesome. They are still highly sought after today.

ShamRock Away. 1983 I crashed my motorcycle. I was walking back and forth to Physical Therapy, in Alma, Michigan. One afternoon, Dennis McGuire picked me up in the Shamrock. We got to talking, became friends. I got to ride in the Shamrock a few times. From what I remember, Dennis's Son did the mechanical work for the two front axles and the forward Rear axle was the power Rear Drive. He and I were working on the idea of powering both rear axles. Here in 2023 Dennis has passed. I figure that his Son, who assisted in this Build, probable has it at his place in St Louis, Michigan. KEITH

There is a Japanese camper you have shown, in which the roof opens up to create a second floor that really impresses me. The whole thing is mounted on a small truck, and was built by three students. who lived in it while travelling around Japan, for two years. A really clever piece of design.

I found and traded a very complete Shasta camper for a bag of homegrown electric lettuce that was used as a drinking shack on a old farm in Medicine hat. It has the canned ham shape with Thor helmet wings as i like to call them. I will be restoring it in the near future after i finish restoring my 440 Cuda. I plan on pulling it behind my restored 1965 Impala big block.

@@tabp8448 No it was just one OZ. of home grown before it was legal to grow it so figure maybe 200.00 Canadian. It was just an abandoned summer night drinking/smoking shack to her. Tires were old but still held air so i hooked it up and brought it home. Still own it and still holding air.

Somewhat unimportant, but interesting to me. the Rectrans Discoverer, from the same designer as the '63 Stingray, used a Chrysler 413 engine. Anyone familiar with the Beach Boys might remember the song Shut Down which was about a Stingray drag racing a 413. The Discoverer has a bit of both!

I use a 84, 22' Winnebago powered by a 454 Chevy engine, as I make my retirement years into nomad living. It was in relatively good shape with only 51,000 miles, having just two previous owners who obviously took really good care of it, as I do. @@mindseyedesign I have actually seen the Shamrockaway a long time ago! It was quite by accident! It is now rotting away in a junkyard!
My husband and I have been building a "Tiny Home on Wheels" that we started about two years ago. We started with the back half of a F-350 Ford pickup, which we turned into a trailer. Becoming the base for our home. It has a kitchen with three burner stove and oven. A three way refrigerator. A stainless sink and a 1500 watt microwave, wet bath with a cassette toilet and shower, full size bed, a small dinette. There's a total of 4000 watts of solar, and a 500 watt wind turbine for charging 12 deep cycle golf cart batteries. There's 2 on demand water heaters. 120 gallons of fresh water. 20 gallons of propane. We've got a 3000 btu propane space heater. It's got 1.5 inches of Styrofoam insulation, in the walls and 2 inches in the floor and roof. It's got a 5000 btu air conditioning unit. And it's got a 12 volt evaporative air conditioner also. 12 and 120 volt lights. My hobby table and my husband's computer and ham radio table are also tucked in it. It has full window shutters. That when closed, hides the fact any one is inside. (for stealth camping). We pull it with our 4 wheel drive, a 3.3L super charged Nissan Xterra. Which has a 40 gallon fresh water transfer tank. Two 200 amp alternators, 250 watt solar panel 4 deep cycle batteries. And 2000 watt inverter. Off-road lighting, brush bars and 12,000 pound winch. It's still a work in progress. But it's been fun.

My ass-hat father bought a 1937 International Harvester D-30 flatbed in 1971 , onto which he bolted a vintage Airstream trailer (chassis removed). He named it Bullwinkle and my brother and I illegally hung out in the Airstream on road/camping trips and kept bugging our parents by calling them on the intercom he’d wired for communication between the cab of the old truck and the camper. Mostly we camped in it on our land outside of Bend , Oregon. Was perfect for that and I can still smell the sagebrush.

What a fine production you have made here, TYVM for telling the whole crazy story of the American RV! My 1st unit was a 1972 Dodge 220, which was (I think) the smallest of a 220---280----and 320 series which was dubbed the "Dodge Mahal"! My poor RV gave it's life providing the "saw power" to build a cabin in the woods as well as a place to sleep while building. After not moving for three years it was no longer road worthy. Thanks again for a fine and enjoyable production!

Personally I have two choices for a vintage conversion. *My choice for RV conversion would be a Neoplan Jumbocruiser Articulated Double Decker bus to RV. *My choice for travel trailer would be a 1954 Ventoura Loft Liner converted to gooseneck travel trailer. Both options would be done up in a high-end art deco styling inside and out, so I could name either the Land Liner.

I've been looking at these campers for years now. We have two vintage caravans my husband and I am working on at the moment, one will become my sewing/craft room and the other for camping.
