GMC Motorhome International 50th Anniversary Event

September 25, 2023 was the first time that 50-year-old motorhomes caravaned from Canada and the U.S. back to the plant location where they were built. Coaches were grouped by their 1973 to 1978 year of manufacture while parading through Pontiac, demonstrating the longevity and GMC Motorhome Lifestyle in 2023.
#gmc #motorhomes were manufactured by the GMC Truck & Coach division of General Motors from model years 1973 to 1978, with almost 13,000 units produced in total. As the only complete motorhome built by a major automaker, the GMC Motorhome was available in 23- and 26-foot configurations, and were noted for FWD and a low profile with a fully integrated body.
Despite the aforementioned FWD drivetrain configuration, power was developed from one of two V8 gasoline engines, which were mounted longitudinally and mated to a three-speed automatic transmission. Notably, the Motorhomes were also equipped with a pair of 25-gallon fuel tanks to feed said powerplants.
As for GMCMI itself, the organization has been in the service of over 900 owners and enthusiasts for the past 40 years.

I remember when those first came out. They were so far ahead of everything else. I was around 15 at the time, & they looked so space age. They still do.

GMC Motorhomes are a true breed all their own!! It would have been nice to have seen more, tours of GMC, clearly the interest is popular. I'm sure a large number couldn't attend. Where is video # 2 ??

Hi. Which video are you referring to? Yes, we had over 120 GMC Motorhomes attend the rally. Another 6,000 or so were either too far away, under repair, or couldn't make it for some reason.

There were close to 13,000 made. We have a club member who tracks VINs, and he just hit the 9,000 benchmark. These are in various states of condition/disrepair; some have been parted or scrapped. But it's neat that 9,000 people have been accounted for in the last couple decades.

If you visit our website at gmcmi.com there are links to all kinds of archival materials, information about some of the earliest coaches and their owners, and as @CheapskateGarage states above, about 9,000 accounted for and either fully- or partially-restored.

I just wonder if any of the actual workers that built them own a GMC motorhome?

Good question. If you check out some of the interview videos on our channel you'll see that John Mest, a GMC Motorhome owner, was one of the first workers on the GMC Truck and Coach assembly line back in 1972.

AI generated videos too many quick cuts you never see anything just a blur of images. So many videos like that these days. Overproduced. Not quality just trendy. Same with the dumb music. Love the GMC I remember seeing them new on the lot in 1975.

This was created by a very talented (human) producer based in Detroit. He has received numerous accolades for his work covering the @m1concourse event. We're sorry the video was not to your taste.
