Living in Florida, gardening has proven to be a bit challenging for us. We have tried numerous methods. (I work full time and cannot spend an unlimited amount of time weeding.) We have tilled, we have tried Back to Eden, and we have tried raised beds. All have met with some level of success and failure. Where we live, we are very high and dry, and our soil is sandy. It does not hold any moisture, or nutrients, and we constantly battle bugs, fire ants, fungus, and hundreds of weeds many with thorns and stickers. In addition, we will have weeks of daily torrential rain, followed by weeks of drought with extremely high temps. In the past I have used old fridges, freezers, and washer drums to grow in. I love it but moving them is difficult. So, Chris and I devised a plan using IBC totes, plastic pallets, and portable trellises. This is our first attempt on a small scale. Keep an eye out for our large-scale beds coming soon. I am busy making mulch to fill them and getting the garden space ready and organized. But, for as cheap as this was to make, I think it will work well for plants with a shallow root system. I am looking forward to experimenting with them and being able to move them if they require more sun or shade, is a huge bonus! (I apologize if the sound drops in some places.
