I drove my Lexus to a local BMW dealership to drop off a friend who was getting her car serviced. A BMW rep said, "you must be lost because we don't see a lot of Lexus owners here..." LOL...nice guy.

Yes but one guy told me to stick with Lexus it's boring, I guess it is when you are not spending your hard earned money on it and your time wasting on the repairs. It can be boring to drive a car around. LOL. Maybe Lexus should advertise the ultimate driving machine since you can drive and drive and drive it by all the BMW's in the repair shop. LOLROF.

@@midiman5045 Lexus drives like Buick. Toyota has more tech. I’ll pass I’m good and yes I’ve owned 3 of them. Very underwhelming drive compared to other luxury vehicles even Acura and Volvo.

Dealership should keep certain items such as injectors and computer boards as tools for mechanics. It's ridiculous that a dealer can't tell you if replacing an expensive part will fix it or not. They can keep a board and injector in a main tool cabinet for the techs to use.

That’s exactly what my non dealer workshop does. The dealer always says..well, we don’t know but we will experiment on your car and you have to pay us. Also sometimes new guys are being trained and you pay for their experiments.

I enjoyed watching your video since I have a love relationship with my 2007 E70 X5 3.0 inline 6 which turns 15 years old this month that I purchased new in Denver, Colorado. No injectors nor diesel so the engine has been great. Low mileage - 104K currently. The exterior and interior also has held up very well. Third row seat air bags went out once. I also track my expenses with dealer repair for the first ten years but after that an independent. I haven't had the major diesel expenses but I agree about the $1000 repair bills are common when some thing major happens. I will purchase a BEV as my next vehicle but am resisting the additional monthly investment since my X5 is basic transportation but still averages $200 a month.

Yep, I have the same 2009 35D here in Australia. Mine only has 190000Kms. No third seat option, but has a towpack which mandates 20inch run flat tyres. No rib on the tyres to prevent rim damage. Makes the ride harsher as well. Gearbox issues where it goes into failsafe every now and then (this ZF6HP28X trans was fully overhauled at about 130000Kms by previous owner). Pull over, turn it off then back on and it comes good until next time. We do not have diesel fluid in this model over here. Interior issues with the rubberized trim coating is the same. Fan control buttons have the legends worn off them by useage. I have anodized aluminum trims in my car not the fake wood. No crack issues. Sometimes the Nav system will not read the disc (yes, I tried a new disc already). Full shutdown, short wait, and restart normally gets everyone talking again. Our problems come from the savage sun, not the cold. We have no salt or ice on our roads. I put a new battery in mine about two years ago, cost me AUD 270. Rear differential mount bush (AUD40). Rear injectors can suffer from water ingress from the back of the bonnet as you say, The plastic walls that hold the hood seal break as poor material. I replaced all mine and got the spares out of China, cost me 1/4 what our local stealership was charging! But this may be more an issue with your weather conditions as not a big problem over here. By the way, the 35D has no more compression that the normal 30D. It has a twin scroll turbo (versus single in the 30D) and an uprated ECM program for more power, and the front guards are plastic, so they will never rust. Steering is a little heavy at low speeds, OK on highway. Oh yes, I would never own a BMW if I could not repair it myself, only the very wealthy can afford dealer servicing in Australia. I would only take it to a dealer if I could not program a module. Dealers rip you off severely over here. But I love driving it, so much torque!

I love your BMW related videos, always enjoyably insightful.

Another thing to be aware of is that "board" or "computer" thing is something repair shops usually throw in a) when they try to scam you or b) when they're incompetent and can't figure out the real issue. I always tell people to run away from that shop if someone mentions the board, cuz it usually isn't that.

@@ECPP wait, I was told this about my E46 module and the change the ECU for like $1000 so i wouldn't get locked inside the car and have to climb out of the window. Or locked out of the car when I wanted to drive it.

Got 300k on my bmw 2010 x5 3.0in line 6 best motor it just keeps running other then valve cover gasket’s and a water pump and 2 sets of new tiers the truck has never left me stranded very reliable

i own a 2020 x7 x50i. paid cash for it and totally love driving it. i have close to 40,000 miles on it. I've had nothing but problems with it from electronics to suspension. what bothers me the most is the ineptness of the dealerships i have dealt with. '"we can't reproduce the problem" is the usual reply i get. i take it to another dealership that finds the problem and partially fixes the problem. i then take it back to my original dealership and they fixed what the second dealership missed. i had a squeak in the front end they could not diagnose. i took it to another dealership and they couldn't find it. i was visiting in nj so i brought it to a dealership there. that makes three dealerships. they found the problem. when i got back home i had my dealership call them. it turned out i needed new struts. it took them 33,000 miles to find the problem! my left front headlamp clouded up and needed to be replaced but they had to get an ok from bmw. he said the headlamp cost $7000.00! thats right you're reading correctly $7000.00 not including labor. thank God i was still under warranty. this was the most enjoyable suv I've ever driven but when warranty runs out the car goes with it.

indeed the X5 drops in value like a rock after a few years. They are 80-100k new but a decade later 10k for a reason!

I previously owned a 2009 E70 but without the diesel and for the most part, it was a workhorse and fun to drive. Once the warranty was expired, repairs were getting costly but they were few and far. When the A/C stopped working, it was time to trade her in but I overall loved the vehicle. I'm amazed at your technical knowledge and appreciative that you share it...

12-year ownership report on my 630i (E63, LCI, 2010) that I've always used as a second, mainly weekend car: - mileage: 85,000 - engine issues: spark plugs & coils - body issues: rattles in the pano roof - cockpit issues: some minor cracks in low quality plastics, wear & tear of driver seat leather I'm still mesmerized by the design and really like the way it drives and sounds.

I have an e70 2009 3i petrol engine N52. Your comments and costing is spot on. I’m in Australia. I bought it 4 years ago cheaply when living in New Zealand for NZ $12000. I was intending using to drag the dog around for a couple of years while living in NZ. I bought it online from a guy who fortunately was a licensed dealer. He suggested I buy an extended warranty for $1500. Best $1500 I ever spent as it saved me about $8000. All very similiar to stuff you talk about. But I do like it and I just put it down to cost of owning. I use an independent BMW mechanic who helps manage what I spend. I’ve taken it to dealers a couple of times to get inspections and had some recalls and warranty items done. It’s done about 100,000 enjoyable trouble free kilometres for me. Over Christmas will do about 5,000 kilometres. It’s all serviced and ready to go.

@@Nogui_Aramburo Oh yeah! It has aged unbelievably well, and something about the look is so elegant. I will admit, Some SUVs might be "Cooler" looking, like my BMW F26 For example, But not much out there is as elegant looking as this in my opinion. Mine certainty isn't.

Sir, you are so on point. My 09 x-drive 48i had basically the same issues. If I didn't do a lot of my own maintenance I wouldn't own this vehicle. It's a money pit that I'm in to deep to get rid of. Everytime I may a repair I want to keep a little longer because it drives so good. It's kind of a love hate relationship.

How ironic! I wanted to buy an 09 x drive 48i from someone I worked with, he had issues with his suspension where the car squeaked when it drove down the road. Found a mechanic to do the job for 2000 but the car was only worth 2500 so it was a bit of a bummer for me to drop out on.

I just had an oil change and brake fluid flush on my e70d with 165kms and received compliments on its condition from the tech. Urethane bushings are a very good upgrade for handling and durability. When the DEF system fails, I will delete and tune with trans service and tune for 4k.

Here in the UK virtually all X5's are the diesel model. The Police use them for traffic patrol & Armed Response Vehicles. Generally the vehicles are pretty bullet proof and will do very high mileages without major issues. Great channel Mark. Keep up the great work you do. Best wishes from Worcester, England. 👍

Exactly what I commented on another video .. I and my family have always had bmw x models and it’s not had any problem Just normal yearly servicing with Kwik fit or Halfords, we don’t go bmw dealerships cos they’l charge more.. police use x5s and have gotten the latest ones too cos that thing is rugged & goes for decades. I think it’s the American ones that’s lemon from what I see online , it’s usual yanks complaining ..

Whoah, the most expensive option for me would be getting one for around £100 and sticking it in myself. It's not like you need to disassemble the engine to put in the new battery, is it. 🤔

I recently bought a 2008 X5 3.0si with 200K km on it and I'm loving it so far, as long as gaskets are replaced and maintained its a good reliable car. Its just wear and tear like any other car to be honest and I myself can turn a wrench if need be. So I'm very confident with the car. But overall good video :)

Welcome to the channel and hi from Canada.

2017 X5 xDrive35i M Sport with 183,000km now Only issues I experienced that got me stranded were the water pump and air suspension two years ago. The thermostat also failed by remaining stuck opened all the way. This year will require a new valve cover gasket (original one still holding up but, sweating is visible), new front lower control arms, coolant flush plus hose flange replacement, an intake valve cleaning with walnut shells and differentials plus transfer case fluid replacement. Spark plugs replaced at 79,000km and 175,000km all on the original coils. There's no rough idle, misfire, stalling I experienced. I sometimes (rarely) get an engine light for "catalytic converter efficiency under threshold". Typically caused by driving long distance at low engine speed and load and is not serious. Oil changes EVERY 8000km (5000 mi). Still original windshield after 3 years ownership (I'm third owner, purchased when it had 63,100km) but it chips that got repaired quickly and no cracks. I'm experienced a lot of paint chips on the front passenger door, running board and driver door to lesser extent. Will need a body shop to assess what correction is needed. Due to the excellent mechanical fitness of the X5 it's been tuned to an M Performance Power kit; previous owner had installed an M Performance exhaust. The combination of both sounds insanely good.

I kept my 2009 x5 for 10 yrs as well, and I added up dealer maintenance and it was $16,000 usd (I kid you not). The final nail was the DPF needed replacing and they quoted me $6500. So that was that. I now have a 2018 x5 35i. I miss the diesel torque though. The engine was generally bullet proof. It was all that additional emissions monitoring and control garbage that didn’t work properly.

Thanks for the informative video. I am actually looking at the 2018 used x5 diesel which has 90k miles on it. I am skeptical about the maintenance cost which is how landed on your video. I was also looking at looking for a big suv, but i guess i will go with 4runner. Doesn’t give a good mileage but at least don’t have to empty my pocket every time i drive.

Good video, I own the same diesel model, 2012. Some of the problems are caused by parking outside. Garage helps. That said, it’s definitely not cheap to own. We have sports package, tires alone cost $1,200 since the positive camber causes uneven tire wear. This thing drives like a tank, we love it on long road trips.

Excellent review like always. My dad X5 is starting to have bluetooth and electrical issues now that it's reaching 100,000km. Ironically there's a 2013 X1 on my court that has close to 180,000km's and still going strong lol we chirp the neighbor but he's proud to drive it. The 1st gen is so small too. What surprised me the most is how a 4 cylinder is outlasting a 6 cylinder, maybe it's a rare case? I don't know much about cars

My 2012 X5M with the S63 has 151,000 miles (243,000) km, and the engine is still strong. I know I'll probably have to replace the turbos in the next year or so; at that point I'll go for the upgraded Vargas turbos. 555HP isn't quite enough - I was out-accelerated by a new Corvette the other day and I wasn't happy.

I had the same model in a 2011. After about 6 years had several diesel related problems and a front end situation. Spent over $10,000 over in 2 years. Sold it when it was 11 years old.

THIS is a "must see". Video! I have the 2009 x5 e70 4.8i gas (petrol) model. I LOVE my x5 when it's running well, which is most of the time. When I gotta take it to the repair shop... 😭😭😭 Cheapest repair, rattly exhaust brackets. Most expensive repair: eccentric shaft.

@@ECPPI firmly believe that BMW is making a huge strategic mistake by gouging on parts through all their dealers. Simple little bolts and fasteners are priced at least 5 times higher than would be considered reasonable. More substantial parts are always a large multiple of the aftermarket price. Our dealership here isn't incompetent like yours, but their estimates for routine repairs are pornographic, mostly because of parts prices. Thankfully there is no shortage of decent aftermarket parts and lots of fully competent independent shops.

Great video but i am astonished what prices do you have on my x5 e70 the new battery was vartaand it costed me 250 euros and it works like a dream of course you have to programe it and the fuel injectors are Bosch here in Europe are 400 500 euros or you can buy reconditioned ones that are the same and are alot cheaper and one thing when your car goes over 240000 km a dpf warning light will come up the dash but dont worry its the dpf counter km that sais that you have to change your dpf. Dont do it because your dpf its fine. You only have to restart that counter km with Ista and its all fine. Great video.

I had a Lincoln Mark VIII had same issues and fixed with conventional springs as well.

i have a 2012 x5 3.5…….i have had it for 6 years. if not for the CPO warranty i wouldve had to pay for oil filter housing gasket (which failed twice), oil pan is forever leaking, fuel pump sounds like its going. Brakes squeal when it is freezing outside, no matter how old the brakes are. had to do a coolant flush water pump twice and thermostat. I chipped and put in intake from burger so then MAP sensor needs to be cleaned every year with the spray. THe vents for the sunroof are stuck so i have to hammer it close from the inside. One parking sensor is gone so it constantly makes a sound. But overall i still have no check engine light and it runs decent. Considering i only drive 8k miles a year. First 5 years was great. NO issues. Then oil filter went then oil pan then water pump. Expensive repairs but hopefully im done. Going to get rid of the car in 2-3 years. But this car lasted MUCH longer than my old e53. But it is a fun car (especially after being chipped).

Mark. Love the videos. As commented on a other one we recently picked up a 2013 X5 diesel. Right under 160,000km and one owner. Decent maintenance history which included an active tank and thermostat replacement within 5,000km. Most of the items you mentioned are well known and documented. I do almost all of my own repairs etc so will likely cut down on cost. Depending on how the vehicle is I may look at deleting the emissions as well which would cut way down on running costs. Great share and appreciate all you’ve put out there.

The repairs you note are EXACTLY what repairs mine suffered. But, I am a good diy mechanic and repaired mine for 25% of what the dealer charged. FCP Euro for parts and Amazon or E Bay got the specialty tools.

I do think LCI or in general Face lifted vehicles tend to fair better than post face lifted or pre lci cars. It’s more so due to the manufactur finally getting the car dialed in from customer complaints and ownership surveys.

They don’t. It’s just your car is younger. They have exactly the same emission system and DPF issues and the pre LCI cars.

I don't know if this applies but when the airbags on my 2008 Jaguar failed I had StrutMaster installed. Great results. Handles more like a BMW now ;)

Apart from the shock of the cost of diesel here in the UK currently being £184.9 a litre, I am very seriously getter a 2017 Mercedes E Class Estate E220d AMG Line, is it better then getting a BMW 530d Touring? The only alternative I have considered is a buy set of Roller Skates.

This is why i always buy basic most common bread and butter german cars so they do not have gimmicks to be failed soon like adjustable air suspension. Currently I own gasoline 2018 330i 3-series with B46 engine, which is a very good designed engine.

Thanks for this info. Very helpful + about extreme weather in AB. Just wondering about your purchase price & consumables--were tires/oil changes/brakes included in the $10,000 maintenance cost? I feel I've spent a bit on my RAV4 consumables like brakes, tires, rims and fluid changes; the vehicle is obviously flawless tho.

i wouldnt include tires and normal wear items thats normal for all cars. The broken stuff is all i would count

One of the things that grinds my gears on these high end cars is the d@mn battery. A replacement battery last year ran me $300 for the battery alone. Getting into the battery bay of the car requires an engineering degree and a trip to the dealership to register it.

If the new battery is the same CCA as the old, you can give the registration a miss. Registration is only required for a different capacity battery. It is my information that this is to enable the correct charge rate out of the alternator.

Hey, my BMW same model as above needed a battery, my auto elec changed it over for $225 fitted. A;so had a front globe go, BMW said $800 my auto elec fitted new globe for $200, sometimes I think we need to shop around a bit.

230,000km converts to precisely 143,750 miles my friend. Amazing to see you've kept and enjoyed the E70 this long!

Comparison to my former 2007 Audi A6 premium plus Quattro. Bought in 2008 as a CPO with 27500 miles and 100000 mile, 6 year extended warranty as part of the CPO. Gave the car to a friend at 195000 miles. Only minor issues….forget the dealer that always wanted to do unnecessary work. Routine maintenance every 10K miles averaged about $200. Never used oil between changes, new battery every 5 years, tires about 50k per set. No suspension or engine repairs, never changed coolant or tranny fluid, per owner manual. Interior and exterior like new except had to replace leather trim on driver seat for $150. Recharged AC once at 150000 miles, replaced cracked rear lights for $125 from eBay. At 90k did 90 minutes on the Pocono NASCAR track with Audi club…no issues. Only real problem was failure of satellite radio receiver/amp which kept draining battery. Dealer wanted 1200 to replace. Used amp was 150, dealer programmed it for 135…since wiring is fiber optic could not use after market. Car drove great, 6 cylinder with good power and 27-30 mpg cruising at 75. If you have an Audi beware of dealer repair shop unnecessary work. Was told needed $2000 suspension work at 90k miles … not true, never touched suspension. This was the best vehicle I ever owned and I have driven over a million miles so far in Fords, Lincolns, Chryslers, Dodges, Hondas, Toyotas, school busses, Austin Healey, etc.

Audis are also a hit and a miss just like any other germans. You probably had a naturally aspirated engine. There are horror stories about 2010+ Audi's turbo 4 and all the oil consumption

I don't like 4 cylinder turbo engines - every one I drove suffered from nonlinear acceleration and the earlier Audi 4 cylinder turbos were definitely oil burners - I don't know how they are now. However, a cousin bought an A4 roughly 6 years ago from a used car dealer with about 50K miles. It burned oil and the used car dealer sent her to an Audi dealer who rebuilt the engine (might have replaced it) at no cost. That free work may have been usual or not, I don't know. But I do know that BMWs are known to be expensive to maintain after the warranty expires. My Audi would have cost a fortune to maintain if I listened to the dealer's repair shop. But they are comfortable, safe, drive well and expensive cars are always expensive to maintain. Yes, I think I was lucky with mine. And I drove it on the NASCAR track at Pocono Raceway with the Audi club, hitting the 133 mph governor on the main straight frequently for 90 minutes with no problems - again, maybe I was jjst lucky.

Have you considered deleting the DPF system? I’m in AB as well, there are no emissions tests as far as I understand.

I bought an E53 a few weeks ago (231 T km). By means of preventive maintenance I replaced all 6 injectors against Injectors that were refurbished by Bosch (325,-€ all six off them) and 6 new glow plugs, from Bosch. A new intake manyfold (deleated the swirl flaps, but of course) , AGR valve and a throttle body (by Pirberg, this is where BMW buys it from for production), water pump and thermostat and starter motor. All from premium brands. The bill was approx. 3400,- € including labor and it's running very fine.. Battery swap for over 1000 quid, I'd never pay, rather I do it myself for about 100,-€ (120 Amp hour battery which lasts longer than 95 Amps, plus a new generator 100 Amps very easy to replace on this one 150,-€) Oil change for 250 quid, this is ridiculous!!!!! Plus the E70 is the more complicated car. I still feel the E53 is the better choice, because it is not as messed up with emission regulation bla bla bla. I missed you talking about the differential, and the transfer case. These >>>> must

100% agree, we own a 2011 X5d with 155K miles and the dealer just quoted us $12K to replace all the emission parts. Over the years we have many of the repairs that you mentioned. We love the performance and mileage but it is time to say good bye! I would not ever recommend purchasing this vehicle. It lives up to BMW's reputation of 'Break My Wallet'!

@@Thedirtylittlesecret I've had mine for 8 years /135,000 miles and just replaced DPF (Diesel particulate filter), glow plugs, and turbo's. The maintenance alone is expensive, but these 3 things were very expensive. So tough to get through these 3 on that cost, but hoping it's the last of large maintenance items for a while. Ugh

Okay man, sorry this has happened to you, but a lot of this could have been prevented easily. 1. The rear airbags are cheap and easy to replace. And why would you go with aftermarket ones, if the BMW ones lasted 10 years? 2. Get rid of that emissions equipment and get a tune. No DEF, no DPF, no EGR, and your reliability goes up 10 fold, and your expenses plummet. Not only that, but the entire system is covered by warranty. Even if they have to replace it 10 times, it's still on BMW to cover. It's not a one time thing as long as you're under mileage and age. You should have escalated that to BMW corporate. 3. The injector problem is well known and the solution is easy and cheap. Just preventively replace the rain cowl tray pieces. Just a quick Google search on "common x5 diesel problems" would have saved you a shit ton. 4. 6:04 Those are like $20 on Amazon. Come on man, did you even try? I spent about $2,500 on mine years ago (doing all preventative maintenance and delete), and haven't had to do anything since. My Toyota literally costs me the same averaged per year.

Thanks for the first informed reply. Based on what I've seen, the owner was not willing to do some research on anything, including parts prices. My 335d has been as good as my N52 128i as far as reliability. Just got to do a bit of research and get rid of the emissions stuff.

I fixed the rear airbag suspension and replaced them but it didn't inflate, I checked the feus number 40 which is for the air suspension, and checked the air suspension relay which could cause this issue by not switching on and off or the air compressor itself is wet, any ideas? E70

I have the N57 2015, you know much about whether these design issues were resolved with the newer model?

Either lease or buy under warranty if you have dough, or if on a budget get them dirt cheap and old that you just run them for a few years then scrap it. I bought a Jaguar S Type R, 400bhp, nice interior and body if rusty underneath, 130k miles, £3500, a gear box failure 3 years later and I scrapped it for £1000. Total costs were oil changes and a tyre, less than a grand a year for ownership total X- D

I had an x5 years ago and loved it. It broke down middle of night driving to Vermont to go skiing. Issue was software needed to be updated. Entire car shut down. Oil leaks. Sensors etc. couldn’t take it anymore. Love them new, hate them as they age. I’m convinced when BMWs reach around 80k miles someone in Germany presses a button and that’s it. All implodes. I’d be very very curious to put a new 2024 x5 against the new lexus gx 550 that’s coming out soon. Lexus I’d have to believe would come out on top in spades.

I know the best way to test any electronics is to use an oscilloscope. This is the ultimate tester for electronics!

Hey just a heads up if you ever have an issue with leaky tails find a custom headlight.tailight guy and bring him some morimoto retrorubber to seal them up and issue will dissappear

Same warning light. Especially it’s something with Brake Force brake light. I suspect one or more wires in the tailgate loom is failing / fraying. My trunk lights are also not working when the gate is fully up. So when something hard fails, I will re-wire the whole harness.

What has been the total cost of ownership in terms of repairs (not fuel/standard maintenance)?

I purchased a 2018 X5d (with towing package and third row seats) which is the next generation. I have 93k trouble free mostly highway miles. I have en extended BMW warranty until 100k. I was thinking of trading in but the BMW X5 is very expensive (new or newish). I also looked at an extended after market warranty (very expensive) and does not cover emissions. The vehicle is in TN and garaged. It has a towing package and used to tow a horse trailer. Any thoughts?

You know what mark buy a Toyota l drive Toyota for long time l mean years l drive to Mexico and back my Toyota's never let me down comfortable reliable and not expensible to fix that's my opinion it's up to you again nice and good information good vids 👍👌

1200 bucks to replace a battery is ridiculous and absurd. If you have a proper scan and diagnosis tool, you can easily do it yourself. Worth the investment.

Hi I have a 2 turbo 40D 2011/10 its great. No DPF fitted so extra good needs diesel additive to de carbon the ERG Use Penrite very good instant improvement on response . have clocked over 170,000 Km great driving replaced front lights assembly with leds. also installed 10.25 inch display qualicom quad core. All great had the software box for media upgraded for apple android car play compatibility. Works well ex BMW guy in Melbourne australia gave me the upgrade software worked . no audio jack needed just blue tooth . He did not give it was a few hundred Dollars Aus.

That’s a bit of a loaded question but I would say the V8s are the worst

I owned a 1st Gen (E53) X5 for 10 years. Owned from when it was 4 yrs old & did around 10k miles p/a as my daily driver.....(petrol V8 4.4i Sport to be specific). I spent around £1.5K (GBP) p/a on repairs to keep it behaving & repaired. In addition to maintenance I also kept on top of cosmetic stuff. Despite it not being cheap to care for I enjoyed the car. Timing chain guide failure (during an expensive life change event), eventually convinced me to say goodbye. Have had a few other brands over years. MB at present. Toyota & Volvo caused me least hassle.

The number one takeaway is just don't go the stealership for any service after warranty. Here's a typical comparison: Temperature sensor in the lower rad hose costs $6 after market and 2 minutes to swap out. Cost from the stealership: $80!!!! That is just criminal for a part where there is no way on earth that the cost can be justified. It's even worse for more substantial parts. So far, mine has been a pretty easy keeper eveen though it's got waaay more miles on it than yours.

Thanks Kenneth. Yes these people earned the nickname Stealership for a reason. I typically do a lot of my own work too but once in awhile the trouble is a bit too complex.

I guess part of your problem is going to the dealer for repairs that would cost a lot less at at an independent shop or if you do it yourself. You mentioned $250 for an oil service. I have a 2012 E70 X5M. I do my own oil service which is ridiculously easy on this car, you barely have to jack it up. I use Red Line oil which is $15USD/qt (but Pennzoil LL-01 IS $7/qt. at Walmart, and exactly what comes in the BMW bottles). I use 7 quarts, so $49USD for oil and $26USD for a Mahle OX 353/7D oil filter on Amazon. So $75 for an oil change. Many repairs on my E70 have been maddening, a starter that I had to have the dealer install was almost $2,000, and I've had to replace the battery twice at about $225 each (buy the $100 tool to dump BMW codes and register batteries, etc.). I've replaced the IBS twice (Hella OEM version for about $100, and I replaced the alternator with a used one for about another $100. My shifter lever failed, but I got a used on on eBay for $200 ($800 at the dealer). If any of your control modules go bad there are services that will repair them, or there are plenty of used parts available. I haven't kept detailed records, but I've owned my 2012 X5M for 4 years and just about 80,000 miles - the car now has 151,000 miles. I'd guesstimate that I've spent about $5K on repairs including replacing all the brake rotors, pads, and e-break) shoes over the 4 years. I paid $25K USD for the car (sticker price over $100K) so I don't think it's been so bad. Oh. yeah - I had to replace the blower motor too - I hope there's a special place in hell for the person who designed that assembly. I did it some years earlier I about 2 hours in our E90 335i, and this took at least 6 or 8 hours.

At least they don't stick you with the electric coolant pump. Designed to fail before 70,000 miles.

I have 2012 BMW X5 xDrive35i and had engine leak after getting it repaired it ended up having engine failure (probably should have taken it to BMW mechanic). Now I'm debating to repair or replace. The line about not giving it to parent or child stuck with me, I was gonna fix it and give it to my mom as backup vehicle but maybe not. I bought certified pre-owned 2020 BMW X3... Wish me luck. I might switch brands next time.
