    While dining in a Chinese restaurant, I noticed after my order was served, all the waiters in the restaurant lined up against the wall and watched me eat. Judging by the blank looks on their faces, I had the strange feeling they were waiting to see if I could finish the meal without collapsing.

    And yet, I still love Chinese food! I grew up regularly eating in the restaurants of Seattle's Chinatown and know just how Americanized most "Chinese" food is these days. Finding decent Chinese food is becoming more and more difficult as increasingly more foods are deep fried, rather than pan fried. This not only adds unnecessary calories, but diminishes food flavor profiles, as well. Good, real Chinese food is amazing! And I will always love it!

    Check behind the restaurants to see if there are empty cages, the restaurant owners hire men to drive through neighborhoods and seize dogs and cats from peoples property and bring back to fill cages all day and night. Don’t fool yourself into believing that the Vietnamese immigrants left this barbaric system of killing domesticated animals behind when the came and still come to America. BOYCOTT the restaurants for at least for the poor crying child whose puppy is now on your dinner plate and is called chicken by the description on the menu.

    I have so many Asian relatives, my French grandparents and other family members adopted many older children during the Korean war, the other side of my family are also French and they adopted many older Chinese children, a wonderful thing being that the children were old enough to carry that food culture with them and our American Thanksgiving is the BEST mixture of Asian and French cuisine, I feel so lucky I have to brag. The reason why we're not fat is because we know how to control ourselves we eat those dishes you name on special occasions and not every single day an everyday authentic Chinese meal would include a bowl of rice with one dish from each food group for instance fish, a type of meat, some type of vegetable, and soup that's pretty much it

  • @QueerCripple

    I think that portion control is an important factor, and the misconception actually adds to the confusion when looking at Health differences between the countries. I have dinnerware from an authentic Chinese shop, and the size of the rice bowl is far smaller than an American soup bowl or Salad Bowl. If you are eating the unhealthy food but in a smaller portions, you are not going to have as many of the negative effects, as you make sure that you are having healthy food in addition to the junk. It is all about balance. Here in America we do a lot of sitting on the couch and eating mindlessly, taking in huge portions. Portion control in general, and differences in portion size between countries, leads to a lot of confusion in my opinion. Americans are used to huge portions, so we imagine that the Chinese or Japanese (you know, any of the stereotypically thinner Asian countries) are eating the same sort of portions as us. It is simply what we are used to and so we project that on to others.

    Ggg Gg I dunno, I dated a Vietnamese exchange student back in high school and his stomach was not "flobby", even though he was getting a bit chubby from the pizza and cheese steaks everyone in my friend group was eating, soooooo I think people of Asian background have some sort of magic metabolite 😂

  • @HopyHop1

    Well, Americans actually believe that obesity is caused by rice and vegetables. I'd bet that hardly any Asians believe this because they or someone they know practically lives off of rice and vegetables while being thin. American thinking: It's not the chicken cheese steaks, pepperoni pizza, bacon cheese burgers, ice cream, tuna salads ... we always eat that are making us fat. It's the high-carb-low-fat rice, barley, steamed potatoes, sweet potatoes, lentils, and vegetables we never eat that are making us fat.

  • @QueerCripple

    @QueerCripple

    6 жыл бұрын

    Clyde Rembrandt my response about "flob" and pizza was in jest, but you're right to point out the "high carb, low fat" or other "exclusion diet" factor. A lack of BALANCED diet is also a problem, if your digestive system is out of whack, so also can be many other things. I personally suffer from issues of malnutrition while being overweight, because my body refuses to absorb certain nutrients properly... portion control, dietary balance, these are not things we as Americans tend to choose to focus on. With a healthy digestive system that comes from both of those, some pizza here and there will have less of a negative effect.

  • @HopyHop1

    @HopyHop1

    I'm not into "portion control" which is an euphemism for calorie restriction or crash dieting. The good news is that when one eats nothing but bananas, dates, melons, peaches, rice, barley, oatmeal, lentils, chickpeas, and dozens of other low-fat plant foods one need not starve oneself to avoid becoming overweight. I don't get why many fat people believe that the steaks with buttery potatoes for dinner and the chicken burgers for lunch don't cause weight gain, but the bowl of oatmeal they have for breakfast does. If people want to continually eat greasy fatty foods and accept the consequences from such an eating pattern that's fine, but they shouldn't pretend that the rice, steamed potatoes, and broccoli they never eat is causing them to be overweight. Moreover, one need not "BALANCE" their diet through the inclusion of dairy and animal body parts no more than people who live in the country need to balance their air quality by having a couple cigarettes a day. The situation with food today seems to be similar to how smoking was in the 1950's. Many smokers at that time were ignorant of the consequences of smoking cigarettes and would refuse to acknowledge that they may be diminishing one's quality of life. However, only the most bold apologists for smoking today would argue that there are no health consequences to smoking. The majority of smokers are honest with themselves and acknowledge that, to them, the pleasure they get from smoking outweighs the health consequences in their particular quality of life calculus.

    Odds of eating unhealthy - live hard, or have health problems such as diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obesity, ect. Some people have never allowed their body to perform at a high level due to their unhealthy eating habits. Some people don’t know how it feels to be healthy, because they’ve been unhealthy their entire life. Let me tell it’s a great feeling, because your body is a machine and a machine performs better when it’s functioning the best resources. You can’t put regular gas in a Ferrari. Your body can be a Ferrari. Well, sports car or truck lol. But oh well. “We all live to die right” “Even healthy people can have health problems, right?” So why bother to try living a healthy life.

    Lots of Chinese Americans in my town, too, but Fuzhounese restaurants are the predominant type of "Chinese" restaurant in town. Fuzhou restaurants typically edge out better Chinese restaurants with dirt cheap prices and big buffets full of cheap fried food (And yet I'm getting hungry just thinking of it). When I was younger we had several really lovely Chinese restaurants, now it's hard to find one that isn't Fuzhou.

    tbh just go to any restaurant in Chinatown. They're catered towards Chinese ppl anyways and a lot of the older generations, the ppl cooking the food, are immigrants so. One sign is to see if there's mostly Chinese ppl eating there and if they have the plates and chopsticks already set up

    Some of these are American Chinese (like the crab things, that originated at Trader Vics "Polynesian" restaurants). But a few of these are also common in Japan: Mabu Dofu - Super popular Lo Mein - Called "Yakisoba" in Japan, it's usually fried with Worcester sauce Fried Rice - Called "Cha Han" in Japan Fried dumplings - Called "Gyuoza" in Japan, they're super popular (and garlicky) Other popular dishes include Chili Shrimp (shrimp in a bright red mild chili sauce), Su-buta (Sweet and sour pork, but not as sweet as the US version. The name means "vinegar pork") Spring rolls (like egg rolls but much thinner and lighter) and kani-tama (soft egg omelet with crab).

    It's true, most Chinese restaurants, or "restaurant chains" are not traditional Chinese, they are what I like to call Chimerican food, "Chinese food" as interpreted by Americans/westerners. Every once in a while me and my family goes to a Chinese restaurant, like actual Chinese restaurant and orders food like this. We know it's not healthy, but we don't do it everyday, and we work off the food and calories the next day and so. So, I think if you want to go for these delicious food, go for it, given you don't eat like this every day. But I didn't know General Tso's chicken is not traditional Chinese food, I learned something today.

    Dr. T. Colin Campbell, the author of The China Study, says through his studies he has found casein to be the most relevant cancer promoter ever discovered. Because casein digests so slowly, natural morphine-like substances in casein known as casomorphins, act like opiates in the body as they enter the bloodstream. Just minutes after you eat a dairy-based food, the casein protein begins to break down. This releases the drug-like casomorphins, which attach to opiate receptors in the brain and cause severe addictions to dairy products (hence the reason they keep people coming back for more.) Casomorphins trigger such an addictive response that they’ve been compared to heroin in terms of their strength to cause food addictions and mood disorders. (Type in a search : "casein and morphine" and read all of the first 20 pages that come up) Casein’s slow digestion rate also puts great strain on the digestive system. Dr. Frank Lipman (an Integrative and Functional Medical expert), explains that the body has an extremely difficult time breaking down casein. Dr. Lipman says that common symptoms of dairy sensitivity due to casein are: excess mucus production, respiratory problems and digestive problems like constipation, gas, bloating, and/or diarrhea. Dairy intolerance is also known to cause skin issues like acne, rashes, and redness or irritation. Skip the casein and try eating more of these Inexpensive Vegan Foods That Brighten Your Skin instead!

    First, ignore all those people who point out every dish and it's flaws like "no fish bc mercury" or "no stirfry bc msg". If you lived like they suggest you're never gonna eat anything good in your life. Second, do not go to any Chinese restaurant who's main dishes are things that Mike hit on. Most of them, even if run by asian people, are serving westernized food and thus comes loaded with oil and sodium. Third, try new things. Don't just order things that you've seen in your local stores at every asian restaurant you go to. Instead of the kung pao chicken try a garlic snow peas stirfry, or rather than getting hot and sour soup get the west lake beef soup. Lastly, tofu, fish and veggies are your friends. Sure meat is wonderful and all that, but try to have at least one dish when ordering that's just full veggies, tofu, and or fish (and this is assuming you're sharing a few dishes instead of each getting one) It brings some variety and healthy options without losing flavor. Tl;dr, don't worry about it, just try new things

    It's easy to tell! Everything cooked with high temperature and a lot of oil is unhealthy.

    C Cla he specifically stated "high heat and a lot of oil". Which is very true as oil can only reach 270°C (meat searing temp.) before it breaks down and creates aldehydes, acids, and ketones. Also, I'm a chef/nutritionist... so please, feel free to try and negate me too.

    I was craving some plain fish and white rice the other day, kinda like how mom used to make. Not over-seasoned. Just the fresh, baked fish flavor and nice, fragrant jasmine rice. Now, my fridge and pantry are empty, didn't want to shop; but I had so much trouble looking for a local asian restaurant that had such a simple dish.
