The most scary thing about brain damage is that, it doesnt necessarily need to show up right after the concussion but rather any time during your life afterwards, specially when getting older, which makes acknowledging it way harder. Definitely something i cant take off my mind when seeing two fighters throwing bombs at each other. A lot of fans just dont realize how much of a tough sport this one is and how much the fighters put on the line everytime they step in a cage/ring, watching them getting booed or disrespected by those filthy casuals pisses me the f off.

Couldn’t agree more. I’m 23, and I had a bad head injury from skateboarding at about 15. I split my head open, had a seizure and kept uncontrollably headbutting the ground while having the seizure. Had a serious concussion and I was dizzy, throwing up and barely remember much of the day or two after it either. However I was given the medical all clear after numerous scans. Regardless of what they said, over the next 2 years I started having twitches in my neck and upper spine that I couldn’t control, and now I’ve only been cleared to go for my license months ago. I still have twitches, and the doctors said I probably always will. Definitely not a good time. Going through that though gives me so much respect for these guys risking so much whenever they enter the ring. P.S Dustin wins tomorrow

@@mikel888666 Im sorry to hear that bud, the good news for you are that, it happened at a very young age so your body is more likely to recover from that, might take longer, you never know. Just dont give up looking for a solution and hopefully you'll start seeing some improvements. My heart is splitted in this one, i like both fighters, but i kinda want to see that gold arround Dustins waist too. That being said, I beleive this is a pretty good matchup for Oliveira, he had struggled against power hitters in the past but, other than that, i dont see many holes in his game, clean technical stricking and a nightmare on the ground. Is gonna be a hell of a card thats for sure, its a shame that we got Jorge and his three piece and a soda taken out of the menu tho...

I agree. This sport takes many things from you. If it werent for brain damage, i probably would've competed for sure. But you never know, one solid strike to the head could take years off your life. The fighters in UFC are just so tough that some of them can walk through many knockouts and still be fine.

  • @LegendInThaMakin

I mean yeah but the ufc is growing and that’s a good thing because it’s a lot less dangerous than boxing. As a ufc fighter you spend less time in the ring, a lot of it is grappling and you can submit fighters instead of ko’ing them. Boxing is a brutal sport because you can only aim for the body or head and your only way out of the ring is you either get your head beat in for 12 rounds or you get knocked out. Those are your only two options. It’s brutal because when you get knocked down or hit badly you can’t just grapple and try and recover, nope, you might have a concussion but the ref stands you up, forces you in your feet and you have to fight through the concussion only to get knocked down over and over again till your body gives out or luckily, the ref stops it. Ufc is the evolution of combat sports where it’s honestly easier on the brain and you’re less likely to suffer serious brain damage in your later years. Not the best of news but hey, as a society, we are improving.

You’re right. I find it funny that most of the fans would probably cry or get knocked out if they got punched in the face, yet they form opinions on a subject that they can’t personally relate to. It’s not just MMA though. Same thing happens in football, basketball, and other sports when fans say, “Oh I could’ve done that it’s not that hard.” Then why didn’t they? Lol. Toxic fans need serious help.

What complicates the "they signed up for this" argument for things like fighter pay and brain health is the economic background of a lot of them. People love the "rags to riches" story, and it reflects the reality for many fighters. But if you grow up poor, you aren't particularly good at school, and there aren't a ton of decent paying jobs in your area, fighting can be one of your only options to build yourself a life, even moreso if you come from a rough neighborhood where you're getting dragged into fights anyway.

And while keeping that in mind, remember that we only see those who, to some extent, succeed. There are also hundreds, if not thousands, of kids with similar backgrounds who try to pull themselves up from the gutter through the fight game and end up with nothing but emptier pockets and accumulated brain damage.

There’s no way around brain damage/CTE if you’re competing in combat sports. You’ll have fighters that don’t exhibit negative symptoms of it but there’s no safe or good way to take repeated blows to the head. The best way I read it described is imagine your brain is floating in container of after water which is your skull, any quick impact to it will slam your brain to the sides of your skull, now imagine guys that eat 100 head shots in a fight, you can’t see it but their brain is battered inside.

Something that makes me cringe is when mma fans say every fight is a "🔥🔥banger" when all main events are the most important fight in the history of the division or in the UFC, when the social media fighters are calling out all the roster and ppl is like "OMG 😱😱😱 this fight will happen for sure😱😱😱" and that fight never happen or when before a fight start we see the same video with the same words just with different fighters "i know i'm better than him" "i'm the best in the world" "i will knock him out" "it will be a violent fight" pay attention and is always the same.

Every single sport that isn't gear-oriented will leave your body broken in some way. While brain damage is by far the scariest, let's not dismiss all the backs and joints that get shredded in other sports.

Man just training for a hobby is hell. Wrestling all thru grade school didn't do half as much in a decade as a few years at my mma gym. My last injury broke my big toe getting it stuck in a boxing glove thumb, the kind with the thumb tip that's sewed to the glove.

While this is true, a (rich) person can have a perfectly enjoyable long life with a f***ed back or knee. However you can have all the fame and money in the world but brain damage can make the rest of your life hell.

Absolutely love the callout of the trolls. Anonymity is a real bitch when it comes to a lack of consequences for your actions. Not enough people commenting remember that it's an actual person on the other end. But then again, that doesn't even seem to matter in person anymore.

That felice just herrig interview is one of the saddest things I’ve seen in my life, she feels like no matter what she does she’ll never be marketable. Female fighters don’t nearly get the respect they deserve, they work just as hard as male fighters and are always being told how masculine and unattractive they are in the comments. I can’t imagine what that’d do to a person. Jesus, y’all act like you can’t be nice to anyone unless you get something for doing so.

It's sad that they feel that way, but the reality of the situation is female sports in general are not as entertaining to watch, so you need to be something special in order to stand out. There's a reason why women's sports do much worse in ratings and profits earned, and it's not because everyone is a sexist monster.

I don't condone misogyny against men or women, so it would be great if people chilled on that behavior, but there is a level of attention to physical beauty that is normal and won't change. My advice to women fighters is to be confident with what you got and lean into it. if you're sexy be the sexiest, if you're a dork be the dorkiest and if you're an orc, be the ...orciest(?). there's a market and audience for all of them if they're confident and proud enough in their own skin. Winning fights helps too

Excellent topic for a video, I know we all love this sport because its awesome to watch and follow but the knife cuts both ways. Hopefully this will help people in the MMA fan community grow and learn. Recently had to sit through a small MMA events live stream and holy shit the comments section was infuriating. No one was talking about the fights it was all vitriol and negative shit. Love each other and enjoy things together, don't be an ass and most importantly, just bleed.
