This was great, thank you. I’m looking forward to seeing your journey and it’s nice to see educational psychology rather than clinical psychology. Would you consider making a video talking about your experiences?

Really happy someone has finally commented on their journey! What work experience did you have before you applied to the doctorate? Did you do a masters too?

Hi Tanya, nice to meet you! If you have a look on my instagram too, I shared my work experience under 'Applications' in my highlights. Feel free to send a message if you dont see it. I did a masters as I did not have a BPS accredited psychology bachelors. It is not necessary to have a masters to get on the course. Check out the university course websites and as long as you meet the minimum academic requirements, you can apply.

It's so good to find a video related to this doctorate because I'm dreading writing this personal statement, more so because I feel I don't have enough experience to draw on. What would you say about that? How many examples is too many to draw on and would mean your statement loses focus? Reading the AEP website I've seen the application can be as long as 8000 words-would you say 3000 is more appropriate so as not to waffle on? Thank you for the advice and experience shared in this video.

Hi Sunnah, if you meet the minimum amount of work experience stated as entry requirements, then you have enough experience to draw on. Some people only work at one place before applying, so its not about how many places you have worked at. What you need to do is draw out the specific experiences you have done and put it into words. The categories/type of experiences can be found in TEP/EP job descriptions. Pull out the key words and write about what you did to acquire that skill (e.g. working in a multidisciplinary team, one-to-one case work etc.). I can't advise as to how many words to use. There is always a possibility of writing 8000 words and be very succinct about each point, or also writing 3000 words covering only one or two points. Give it a go and you will know. Get someone to give feedback on your statement. All the best!

Hi there, thank you so much for sharing this, it's really helpful. I am currently applying for the EP doctorate starting this September. I have made a draft personal statement but would greatly benefit from seeing an exemplar. Do you know where I could find one? Thanks in advance for any help :-)

Hi Martina, I don't think you will ever find an exemplar anywhere as it is a personal statement and is unique to every individual. Even if you saw one, it might not benefit you because you may risk thinking that the exemplar (out of many thousand others) is what the interview panel is looking for and therefore miss out on writing about your own special qualities that are tailored and unique to you. In this video I highlight the main qualities that I personally think correspond to the EP job description which should be included in the personal statement. Examples and reflections you incorporate from your own job experiences will be special to you. What would benefit more is if you ask TEPs or EPs to read your written draft and provide you with some feedback. People would be more willing to help in that direction. Hope that helps!

what theories, models or methods that is typically used in practice within this career path to help children and young people? is it something we are taught as undergrads?

bronfenbrenner's bioecological model, Maslow's hierarchy of needs, self-determination theory, Vgotksy's zone of proximal development, Piaget's stages of cognitive development - all great theories models to get started!!! These are usually taught In undergrad psych but it's good to think about how you might apply these when working with children and young people.
