My dad worked on the Warner Brothers lot in his late teens. Though he ended up working in the research department, he started out as a gofer type. One day he was carting old film reels on his errand bike to the lab for restoration. (Warner’s was the only studio to regularly do this.) Garfield stepped right into his path, my dad swerved to avoid him and he and the movie reels hit the ground. Garfield helped him out, then both went on their way. At lunchtime, my dad headed to the commissary, only to hear Garfield describing their encounter as, “I bumped into the skinniest kid hauling a huge stack of film cans. Stuff went everywhere! And could that kid curse! I learned some things from hearing him.” At this point, Garfield noticed my dad, pointed him out, then called him over to their table to eat with them. My dad said after that, Garfield would always wave, smile, sometimes talk with him when they’d see each other on the lot.

One of the greatest of actors and a man of deep integrity. The studio system done him in and made him a scapegoat to HUAC. A shameful chapter in American history.
