@Fred Bloggs I disagree. Bad guys that know they do the wrong thing are more compelling in my eyes. Nothing can redeem them. As long as I understand that they like to do bad things then I don’t need a whole weepy backstory to try to justify their actions. The whole villan has to be the ”hero of their own story” is a bit overplayed and a modern cliché in writing. Regardless, my point here is that Dracula isn’t a ”sympathetic” character, they did not portray the character right. Even if you prefer ”sympathetic” villans, that is not who Dracula is. I would be equally upset if they made a villan that is supposed to be ”sympathetic” into a full blown non-redeemable evil villan.

@@christianbjorck816 In a way I somewhat agree with your statement. For sure, Dracula isn't supposed to be sympathized with. I felt the same way when Rob Zombie did his version of "Halloween". The whole reason I loved Michael Myers is that he's "pure unadulterated evil" according to Dr. Loomis. In Zombie's version, they show him in a broken home, with a pervert abusive alcoholic father and an indifferent mother, gets bullied at school, and it causes him to snap. That turned me off of the movie, because it makes you feel sorry for the kid, when the kid is supposed to be evil, period. That's like trying to show Damien that was just poorly conceived by Satan, and if he just got some therapy, those 6's would just magically disappear off his head. But also, with the "somewhat" part of my statement, some villains can be sympathized with. Dr. Freeze, for example, though he does terrify Gotham City, he does it for Nora, his wife who lies in stasis until he can cure her illness, and so I always looked at him as a tragic villain in Batman's Rogue Gallery. I have a few others, but this comment is already longer than needs to be, and you don't need to read a book while enjoying Minty's videos lol. Cheers!

@@christianbjorck816 Well, I kind of sympathized with him a bit since he lost his true love and was hoping somehow to find her again. Plus, he fought to protect the church and in return they told him that her soul was lost because of her suicide and she wouldn't find her way to Heaven. That was really important to people back then.

I thought the brightly coloured cowboy outfits that Dracula wears when he's in 1890s London were absurd. And then I learnt - from a fashion design type - that kind of get up actually was the fashion among the swell set at the time. They really, really did the research.

This was such a great movie, Gary Oldman needs a lifetime achievement award for all the great rolls he played but the entire cast was amazing in B.Ss Dracula.

Reeves as an Victorian Englishman was pretty weak but thats a popular oppinion. Carey elwes would of been a better fit to play harker imo.

I loved how Frances insisted on making this movie with practical effects. It's one of the last movies that did it. As for Oldman, he killed it as Dracula in this. IMO, Oldman did Dracula as much justice as Christopher Reeve did for Superman.

The only effect in this movie that is not practical is the weird blue fire in the forest, that is digital, all the rest is practical and in camera, even that shot of the map while Jonathan Hacker travels to Transylvania was made practically with rear projections.

It’s the best. I’m glad I got to see it in the theater when it came out.

One thing I do know .. when I watched this the first time and saw the 3 vampire ladies "having fun" with Keanu.. I just thought "That's how i want to go".. or with a grenade and Vasquez in an Air vent 😁

I was 14 when this movie came out and it still gives me goosebumps. At the end of the movie I felt bad for Dracula. All he wanted was to be reunited with his lover.

It was a tragic ending giving Dracula a more human demeanor. It made him less a monster. I really liked this version and Oldman did a fantastic job. He is always intense in his acting.

Yeah I was 21(1992?) for most of that year and dug the movie immensely. This year I saw Nosferatu for the first time just the other day. I dig that one now as well. It's a creepy black and white silent movie that came out in 1922.The people who made it were sued cuz they didn't have permission to produce it. I saw this one on youtube(link). Underrated. Always loved this movie, especially the score by Wojciech Kilar.

I have always loved Keanu in this role. He seems so young and "trying" to fit in and please. A perfect target for Dracula to toy with

I can only say one thing: Gary Oldman, what a genius (and Winona Ryder for making this happen)!

Gary Oldman and Johnny Depp are two of the best character actors in the world and I’m so jealous of Winona Rider for being able to work with them both in the 90s

Bram Stoker's Dracula is one of the all-time top 5 movies, for me. I've seen it 8 or 9 times so far, and never get tired of watching it. I love the story, music, cinematography, etc, so much.

What I liked about this film was it used a universal approach to the vampire folklore. In many scenes Dracula is not just some aristocrat in a cape, but also a shape-shifting monster who takes on all sorts of forms. Vampires are seen differently throughout out world folklore and not all of them are human-like.

I love this movie and watch it many times. Oldman and Ryder gave magnificent performances

Coppola has a way at picking young people who will go on to do great things. The outsiders cast, Keanu & even his daughter though the latter 2 were awful when working with him

I don't mind Keanu as much as I used too; Harker is supposed to be a dull, normal guy. One thing that always tickles me about this movie too, is that there's a novelization. Not a reprint of the original novel, but a book based on the movie based on the book.

Definitely one of my favorite movies...the visual effects haven't age too bad on it but I still watch it whenever it's on TV

Gary Oldman is beyond description. Harrison Ford said on the set of Air Force One, they called him scary Gary because he was so into his role. When he portrayed Beethoven in Immortal Beloved, that is actually Gary playing all of the piano parts. He is an absolute treasure and I haven't seen all of his movies but I've loved every one I have seen.

He has played some great rolls, but he really shines while playing a croissant.

This movie is a masterpiece, through and through. The atmosphere, the sights, the sounds, the presence it brings is superb. I love this interpretation of Bram Stoker's Dracula. This movie also put Gary Oldman as one of my favorite actors, too. Anyone who has not yet experienced this movie, it's worth gathering your favorite food, beverages and loved ones to watch this amazing work of art.

The first tragic, romantic vampire was Jonathan Frid's Barnabas Collins in the original Dark Shadows series. I just couldn't leave that untouched 😏

I love this movie so much. Especially the costumes. I just adore Eiko Ishioka's designs. I personally never had a problem with Keanu Reeves's performance, because when I watched it back then, I saw it in German (no DVDs back then..) and nowadays I just don't give a damn about the 'Reeves-problem'. Same with Kevin Costner in Robin Hood, btw. But anyway... The movie is creative, funny, dark, emotional, beautiful and still feels fresh.

He was a youth out of his depth, which is exactly what the role required. He performed such well, with over enunciation of dialog, as if to lift himself up to the level of the challenges he was facing. Travelling alone, dining in castles with foreign dignitaries... when he was just a junior bank clerk. He was miscast because of common audience impressions, not his performance. Just my two cents.

His acting is great in the film, his accent.....not so much....but refraining from saying "Dude" at the end of each sentence is just idiocy. It is hard to see the actor who became famous for Ted "Theodore" Logan play an englishman.

When will people understand you dont mess with john wick. They kill his dog, steel his car, now they rag on his acting career..... you cant run cause he will find you connected to electronics and his underground connections will give you up.

I've never seen Winona Ryder look more beautiful than in this movie. And that's saying a lot.

Reeves wasn't QUITE RIGHT for the part, but it really didn't ruin the movie for me. Still a classic!

I like 'Bram Stoker's Dracula'. The Drac in this movie reminds me somewhat of Jerry Dandridge in 'Fright Night' given that in their younger human form they appear handsome, suave and charming. Which is all part of their deception of course.

Yeah, I agree with you. I have a major in languages - Portuguese/English, and I read Dracula among other several English literature classics, and I remember that I was impressed at how faithful to the book the movie adaptation was.

How is it faithful to the book? The book was a stunning tribute to a woman who was so amazing and strong that men that didn't even know her were willing to give up their very souls for her. (This in a time where women were supposed to be quiet and submissive and stay in the background.) Stoker gave us a female lead who "had a woman's heart and a man's brain." This movie was a weird tragic love story where the demon who was the dark hero is willing to fight for a wife that was no longer his (to the point where he'll kill her husband) and she betrayed her husband for him. Not to mention that in the book Mina wasn't a reincarnation of Dracula's wife, she always saw him as a monster. In the book, she was so compassionate and caring that a literal lunatic who was so afraid to die that he ate flies to avoid it willingly gave his life to save hers. In this movie, she was a plot device to make us feel sorry for Dracula. I'm not even dinging this mess for the odd shots of eyes at the top of the screen or the terrible acting. The plot wasn't anywhere near the book. What am I missing that you think it was and I don't?

@@Laurtew like I said elsewhere, the booke has a line that goes unexplained when one of Dracula's brides accuses him of never having loved. He says, 'Yes, I too can love. You yourselves can tell that from the past. Is it not so?' In addition, some of the dialogue in the movie is quoted verbatim from the novel.

I also think it is magnificent, this movie made me want to rewatch the movie and reread the book.

This is by far the best version of Dracula I've ever seen. I've watched this movie many times. There are soo many tiny details you can miss, like how the shadow of the old Dracula moves differently then the one we see (trying to choke Keanu). But I also love the intro and how we see how devastated he becomes after coming from war to find his love has committed suicide and cursing god and becoming this "evil" creature only to hope to find her again. It's a tragedy that really makes you root for the enemy than the "heroes" that are trying to save the girl Dracula loves. The soundtrack to his movie is also amazing. It really makes it more like a sad romance than a scary movie. It's a tragedy, but also a great story. This might be my favorite Gary Oldman movie. He's done a ton of great movies, but this one was something else.

Minty: "It's not a Horror-Movie per-say -" Movie: features scene of three vampire women _eating a baby_ much to Harker's horror and disbelief while Dracula looks on and laughs menacingly. Yeah...not a horror movie.

When I was in college, this movie played 24/7 for two weeks straight in our apartment. You never saw the whole thing in it's entirety... just bits 'n pieces between classes. Good times!

Upon seeing the scene of Wynona and Gary dancing around with all the candles surrounding them, .... Am I the only one who's instantly reminded of The Police's "Wrapped Around Your Finger" video?

Beautiful Movie, made me a fan of Gary Oldman.. Amazing Movie

I saw this thing three times when it came out in the theaters, and it never got old with repeated viewing. Such a lurid-looking production with amazing costumes and (Keanu Reeves aside) standout performances. I think Coppola's decision to shoot on a sound stage (something he did to great effect on 1981's criminally-neglected 'One from the Heart') really brought out an old-school Hammer horror feel, while at the same time keeping things fresh with the costumes and an inspired script. And Minty, I totally agree with you that Gary Oldman can play anything: what other actor can include on one resume spot-on interpretations of Dracula, Commissioner Gordon, Sid Vicious of the Sex Pistols, Beethoven, and Winston Churchill? I don't know as the Count was his finest performance, but it's certainly both memorable and distinctive. As always, thank you for posting this.

My 2nd favourite Dracula talkie. Never grow tired of this film.

They should straight-up do a movie about Vlad the Impaler a historical movie.

Its been done. Many times. In 2000 a TBS? Movie about him was decent. Dracula Untold 2015 was more backstory and good.

Out of all characters of Dracula, I like Van Helsing. I really like Anthony Hopkins as Van Helsing. When I was younger, playing the game Dracula with them. I used the services of Anthony Hopkins and Peter Cushing, to play Van Helsing, whenever my friends and I play Van Helsing. Also I surprisingly used James Bond for making Van Helsing as a ladies man. It's weird, but unique. Anyone agrees? Recently, I've been making a bag that Van Helsing would use. I have a cross and everything, Van Helsing used. It was awesome.

The visual design of this film is still delicious! "Bram's" and "Interview" really dug into the decadent sex appeal of the genre, in body, gesture, and aesthetic. Nitpick as we fans may, they're both a high water mark in cinema vampire history.

In the US, it was always pronounced You-rhythmic-s. I saw Gary Oldman talking about his speaking accent. The gist of the comment was, he has done so many different accents in his career he can't remember his own true accent. So, the only role Gary Oldman can't play is himself. All The Sounds of Fear by Harlan Ellison, when I read it, the protagonist is always portrayed by Oldman.

He actually hired a vocal coach to help him recover his original accent at one point.

The comic worked visually because it was done by Mike Mignola, creator of Hellboy, and visual designer of the Dracula movie. The comic was forgotten about because it was produced and distributed by TOPPS, not known for comics but trading cards and bubble-gum. The Dracula comic was one of the strongest pieces of work Mignola ever produced. It is magnificent and stands along with Bernie Wrightson's Frankenstein as a benchmark in classic horror adaptation.

This movie is forever going to hold up to the times. It will be a classic forever.

My brush with fame: Coppola's nephew was one of my campers at Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp, in Michigan, in 1987 or '88. As usual, Minty, excellent analysis/exegesis. Bravo, bruhvah.

I was a sophomore in high school when this came out! Fell in love with the movie *AND* Gary Oldman! And 20+ years later, my daughter brought me the Old Count Funkco Pop … I love it 😍

Along with Frank Langella's Dracula, the Gary Oldman version is my favorite. I definitely found myself rooting for Dracula and thinking Van Helsine (sp?) the monster. I was also totally blown away by the use of the shadows in this movie.

Apparently, the reason he kept the filming in America- was because he learnt from his nightmarish experience of location filming with ‘Apocalypse, Now’....

I loved this movie so much that I saw it 4 times in the theater when it came out back in 92. It is still to this day one of my favs.

Easily one of my favorite movies of all time. The visual and audio come together to totally immerse me in the film even still, after seeing it so many times. Great review, Minty!

The Eurythmics did an amazing soundtrack for 1984. It is very goth with a little bit of pop. The song "Julia" is haunting.

One of my FAVORITE movies. Oldman's Dracula was the best! And the sets, costumes were beautiful.

I've loved this movie since it came out. The soundtrack is awesome and I'll have to check but I think I still even have the comic.

This is one of my favorites, loved everything about it. Saw it when in my early teens so Keanu could do no wrong.. lol. Gary Oldman was Absolutely amazing as he always is. So happy how it was cast all around.

This is the best Dracula movie! Wonderful soundtrack! And no lame sequels to water it down. I also have the comic (one book, now) and it's gorgeous!!!

One of my favourite horror films of all time.

Gary Oldman is by far my favorite actor. He could literally do anything!

Wow.. When you said that Gary Oldman looked at pictures of his little boy, I broke.. That's so deep, I felt that hard..

This was a work of art. It actually created an amazingly creepy and thrilling atmosphere from start to finish and absolutely delivered on the romantic allure associated with Dracula and vampires. It was a great adaptation and one of the most visually stunning movies ever. Also, the artist for the comic books was an incredible talent so I'm glad to see Minty put it in the video.

Going through my DVD collection again I see.

I definitely love this movie. Coppola and Oldman really did make Dracula a sympathetic character, and the supernatural/gothic-romance of the movie is wonderful. My mind simply refuses to let the Harker performance interfere with my enjoyment. Also, this movie had one of the most terrifying werewolfs, ever! C'mon! That demon bat/wolf/beast thing in the maze frightens the crap out of me!

Bram Stoker’s Dracula is one of my all time favorite movies. And Gary Oldman is absolutely amazing in the role.

I first saw this movie at the age of about 10 in theaters. And today it is still 1 of the greatest movies ever made. Simply a masterpiece. I can't count how many times I've watched this movie. Every time I watch it it feels as if I'm watching it for the first time and I enjoy it the same way I did in the theater back in the day.

One really great thing about re-uploads is that it's great to see the videos again after a while. It sucks that they're needed but great for us folks that love the channel! Man, I really do appreciate all your hard and time-consuming work on these. I hope you have a wonderful one!!!

Yes. But is it truly a love story. Or does he seduce Mina for his own sinister reasons. I'd like to believe it's a love story. But...hard to say. Only Dracula knows his own heart.

Maybe it’s because I’m Dutch and was quite young at the time I didn’t dislike Keanu in the movie. Even nowadays I don’t.

The Bram Stoker Dracula pinball machine is actually highly regarded in the pinball community. It's designer is a legend and says it is his best game. It has been used in international championships in the final round and has a unique feature where the ball floats on it's own across the playfield, called "The Mist"

Bonus fact 1: Even though the movie is called "Bram Stoker's Dracula", the movie has a little to do with a book. Only plot points are names of characters & Dracula's trip to London. Everything else is brand new material created exclusively for the movie. Bonus fact 2: There is no CGI in the movie. Everything you see are practical effects. Coppola limited himself, because he wanted to make a movie the same way movies were made circa 1897.

Are you sure you've read the book? Because I have and the movie parallels the book rather well. Although there are some scenes in the movie that are not in the book. The overall story is quite there though.

@@1pcfred Biggest difference between the book & the movie is why Dracula comes to London. In the book he comes to London to buy a property & in the movie he's drawn to London because of Mina, who's Elizabeta reincarnated. Also in the book Dracula doesn't turn into a werewolf-bat thing.

@@Djordje_Jovanovic in the book and movie the same general things happen. Harker, Lucy, Mina, Van Helsing, and Dracula all have the same interactions with each other. The movie is clearly based on the book. With the movie they did take artistic license to make the product more appealing to a modern audience though. Which is not a bad thing to do. It gives us a work we can better enjoy. In the book Dracula certainly transforms too.

He picked the woman he knew they all cared for because he knew it would hurt them the most. It was a dispassionate, vengeful choice meant to inflict the most damage. Nowhere in the book does it talk about Dracula having a wife or loving anyone. It was a plot device that Coppola used so he could reimagine the story into something different, a supernatural love story. He took an evil demon, bent on destroying love and all things good, and turned him into a sympathetic, dark hero. This movie is nothing like the book. The movie wasn't bad, but other than using the same characters, I don't see how it's like the book.

Being 6 or 7 seeing this because my dad wanted to see it and thought it would a good family film. It is nice watching it as I get older.

I have never read either novel of both movies but you can tell by this movie they made certain to keep everything on point and not take it waaaay out there like they used to and have with other films !

This film was great...acting ,sets ,costumes , music ,but the Lovesong for a Vampire was run during the closing credits when people were leaving the theatre. My daughter & I stay for the closing credits of every film & fell in love with the song. We bought the album for the song. We sympathized with the characters but I also cried for Frankenstein.

Tom Waits delivered a gripping performance as Renfield, some of the best acting in the film imo.

One of my favorite lines was from Elwes, and it's so British I started drinking tea. "How very droll. Do you hear that Quincy? Last week he wanted to marry her, now he wants to have her committed!"

Hate most of the more modern horror adaptations, but this was pretty solid. That werewolf scene freaked me out when I was a kid.
