Gary Oldman captured so many aspects of Dracula. The fearsome warrior, the decadent old vampire lord, the handsome young nobleman, the wolf form, the bat form, etc. He truly seemed like an all-powerful supernatural creature, something to be terrified of. I think Dracula was his best role.

I don't think so. I think he wasn't very good as he played Dracula too melodramatically (Oldman said himself that he isn't very happy with his performance). And Mina, btw, was NEVER a lover or reincarnated wife of Dracula in the original book. That was completely made up for the movie, and it actually worsened the story in my opinion because it didn't make much sense. In the novel, she is merely his victim. There are quite a few other significant changes as well which is ironic considering that the movie is called "Bram Stoker's Dracula".
@tideivlife1

@@decimustv4257yeah why people think this is a credible adaption is beyond comprehension. The only thing that resembles the book is in the title. Bram Stoker would roll in his grave. The closest to the book is a 1977 BBC version with Louis Jourdan.

@@decimustv4257 I disagree. I think Oldman did a great job as Dracula in all his forms. And the twist with Mina did in my opinion make the movie exceptional. I think it shows in a beautiful way that love defeats darkness. For example when Dracula don't want to condemn Mina and when Van Helsing realize that "they have all become Gods madmen". The mood in the movie is also unlike anything I have ever seen and the music does add a layer of atmosphere to the move that is beyond exceptional. I admit to being biased because when I first watched the move back in 92 or 93 I have never read the novel , and while I agree with you that the name of the movie could have been a bit different I still think that by using it, people without prior knowledge of the novel would be drawn to it and know what to read. That way they discover two version of the story which may (or may not) be a good thing. (Do remember this was before internet availability and easy access to information).
Oldman's portrayal of Dracula was legendary.

I agree wholeheartedly, the only thing i believe that could've been thought out better was the casting of Keanu Reeves. It was bad casting, he was the only weak link in this whole film but it really didn't matter because the film was so damn good, so artistic so mesmerizing. I could overlook that flaw easily, I'm just saying so to be picky but otherwise this film is so so underated. It should have garnished Oldman an Oscar Nod at the very least and a Directors Nod as well.

Keanu Reeves was said to be exhausted at the time (after a series of films). Coppola even says that the actor was striving to get the accent and all (even if it failed). For me, the less pleasing acting came from Hopkins who turned Van Helsing into some kind of illuminate old man.

@@hexxon77 very true. Everything this man ever believed in was crushed to powder right before his eyes. Everything he had ever loved, believed in and worked to defend was obliterated. It is quite interesting when one reads accounts that the Church as a whole declared suicide a mortal sin due to the fact that the Apostle Paul said in scripture "For me to live is Christ and to die is gain" These times were so difficult many Christians chose death believing they were heaven bound regardless. The church, needed money and people in the pews and the pope of the RCC at the time declared suicide a mortal sin. Hands down 1 of his best performances ever.. Scary, yet Tragic. Beautiful yet Dark. Gary Brought Vlad To life not just Dracula the vampire but the Tragedy of His story.. Its great to see him talk to about this.. If you watch the behind the scenes making of Dracula (which you can see if you hit the expanded dvd) you can tell how difficult it was to pull off this role considering he was working with Keanu Reeves who was just coming into his own as an actor. Gary old man as Chief Gordon, Oldman as A bad guy in Lost in space & The fifth element, Or even his role in The animated Classic Quest for Camelot, his acting is second to none! Much respect to This man right here, I need TO get Dracula on Blu ray because I've never seen it in that Resolution

Gary's a class act on and off screen, there's footage of him and Francis arguing on set during the making of Dracula but he put that aside and killed it
Only Oldman could play the vampire like that because he himself is not really a monster inside. If I objectively look at the character he played, I think in real life that person would be a narcissistic personality with a violence problem. Instead, I feel he’s a poor tortured soul, that has been separated from his one true love and that has me rooting for the character no matter how many lives he takes out in the process. One of my favorite scenes is of him and Ryder where her character Mina remembers the past. I never get tired of it. It comforts me in times of joy, in times of sadness, and in times when I just want to believe in love so grand it cross over decades of time to find someone again. That is what made this story so beautiful and Coppola’s ability to capture it on film was brilliant! I’m so in love with this movie.
I saw this film in the theater when it was released. Several people walked out shaking their heads in boredom- I couldn't believe it. Oldman's performance is an absolute masterclass. This film is in my all time top 10....and Oldman- to me- is the best male film actor alive...Side note- I briefly met Gary Oldman in 1998 in a pharmacy in LA- he was in front of me on line. I briefly said "you're a great actor". He turned around, smiled, and humbly said 'thank you'....it's chilling that this humble British man can unleash such insane rage on cue
This is one of my favorite films and Gary is absolutely stunning as Dracula. I absolutely loved his acting and I can’t gush enough about how amazing he is in the role
This movie may have been satisfactory at best without Oldman's portrayal. I don't even care for vampire lore and yet it is one of my all time favorites.
