exactly. What works in a game, never works in a tv adaptation. We have seen this countless times. The makes of the last of us show were way more clever and took a step back from the game, deciding carefully what makes a good tv version. I like everything they did. Series/movies with massive zombie numbers we really have enough. And they stayed away from those soap-like, childish human interactions that make no sense and are so off-putting in series like the walking dead. However i digress, it way more diffictult to keep a level for so many seasons compared to just 9 episodes of last of us.
They started by making David more sympathetic. Then made him even more sociopathic and monstrous, both of which are impressive feats.
@chambeet

I preferred the game version more. A little more subtle and I love that it takes quite a bit before you realize that he’s a villain. Like when you meet him in the game, sure, he seems creepy and off, but the actor (Nolan North?) also makes him somewhat charismatic and almost kind, so by the time you’ve teamed up with him to kill, among other things, a bloater (!), you get hit harder by his creepy revelation. He was more on-the-nose creepy in the show, and less effective because of it for me.

@@chambeettotally agree! David was far better in the game! The whole religious cult thing felt forced and totally unnecessary.
I'm one who believes that the rare portrayals of infected make it seem that the infected problem was largely under control after 20 years of the outbreak. It needed more to justify the wild situation humanity was left in after 20 years.

I think it's still believable. Assuming that most of the world scientists, engineers, manufacturers, etc. died (with most of the working experience of how to keep society running disappearing with them), the state of things still makes sense at this scale. Also, people don't trust each other anymore. It explains why pockets of thriving society (Bill's town, Jackson), are so unwilling to share it with outsiders. Humanity will need way more that 20 years to recover from the infection, even if it's eradicated.
@syabri2342

@@WeedsterDuck Definitely, it's just that in the game it feels more like any area that isn't under the control of FEDRA or some other group is basically an infected area and you're never safe outside, even though the open countryside is less dangerous than cities, you can run into infected
@joemisek
Жыл бұрын
@@WeedsterDuck First of all, realism is relative if we are talking about an exaggerated fictional world like this. But no, Joel wouldn't look stupid if he runs into infected, because he's venturing into parts of a world that is not contained... like in the game. Outside the contained and fortified communities, infected roam. I think that's a fair premise and one which the game portrayed. In the show, there isn't enough infected anywhere in the uninhabited space to think that the epidemic is even prevalent enough to justify a lawless society at that point. It made me wonder, in the show, why a QZ didn't just bomb out the small handful of spaces or buildings overrun with infected, and just rebuild society.
David's intentions weren't different???? It was exactly the same lol. He wanted to take advantage of Ellie.
@MinbadTheFourth

I know right. To me, his intentions towards Ellie were even clearer in the game. Plus afterwards when reuniting with Joel, she clearly said "he tried to..." whereas in the series she just stutters instead as she hugs him. Apparently, Mojo had some wishful thinking or did not play the (same) game.

I recently played TLOU for the first time. Show David might as well have a mustache to twirl & a cat to pet with how blaringly obvious he's evil. Game David was a wolf in sheep's clothing. You don't really get to know how evil he is until moments before they try to butcher Ellie. If Naughty Dog really wanted to, they could've subverted our expectations by having David be a man in over his head, wanting to escape the monsters of men he barely controls with his family from famine in a frozen hell scape. Obviously, he ended up being a cannibalistic pedophile, so good riddance.

I know they have their reasons why there wasn’t more interactions with the infected or with marauders but I feel like they could have done that better. “I feel like the whole series was rushed in production.”
I love the fact that the hand editing mistake in Jackson is in this video, I didn't catch it when I was watching the show at first.
The game needs zombies, without zombies there is no game play. However, the show doesn’t need you to kill zombies, because you aren’t playing a game; and instead the focus more on the creation of a world as good writing creates worlds through through character development. I get the video game people lament less zombies, but it really makes the show much better, don’t believe? Watch that disaster of a show Walking Dead.
One change I didn’t like was that origin to Ellie’s immunity. Her mom got bitten while giving birth which is basically the same origin as Blade. Was such a “really????” Moment
I dont agree with you on bill i liked how he was in the game
Agreed to all except for David. I found him way scarier and pervy in the game. Also, he did taunt Ellie a lot in the restaurant, maybe even more.
The expanded intro was by far the best addition
Better than the game with capital letters? HAHAHA. Riiight.
"pops a clutch" *proceeds to shift an automatic tranny*
my favorites were how well the script and i like how how it explained how bill met frank
I watched this intro for 200 times its f...amazing, and it still gives me nightmares.
I can't say I agree about the 'fungal network' and changing spores to tendrils. This change never matters outside of an excuse to do that gross kiss to Tess. On that note, I didn't care for Ellie's immunity change either. It is explained that the cordecypts recognize her as cordecypts, too... but the show established that infected don't attack each other, so it contradicts itself since infected were attacking Ellie all the time. Not to mention, if she was infected since birth, she would have been discovered by FEDRA, the people she spent her whole life with, who do scans all the time. The show should have stuck with the game's immunity excuse (a mutation) so they don't fall into any plot holes like that. Of the changes I did like, "A Broken Man" is easily my favorite. Very powerful to see the emotional toll Sarah's death had on Joel. Almost makes up for less infected. Almost. The lack of them really undermined the desperation for a cure. And a Joel that saw more action would add to the understanding of why he was the only man for such a dangerous job.

The big reason for the change from airborne spores was that after all of the difficulties in filming Chernobyl, the guy in charge didn't want to have to go back to relying primarily on body language to portray emotion in a series where everybody would have to wear gas masks all the time. Which, as Film Theory pointed out in "How To Survive 'The Last Of Us'," is ironic given the casting of Pedro Pascal :D

There's a reason so many are in agreement this is the best video game adaptation ever made, and it's precisely because of its understanding of that word: Adaptation. Each medium has its own necessities, so to speak, and while the video game may be much more action-oriented while at the same time working under ludonarrative logic (and still managing to remain quite cinematographic at that), the series needed a more personal approach that didn't rely solely on action while replicating the same tension that make players grip their controllers tighter, only without the controller. Hence, they took ludonarrative logic and translated it to cinematographic language by adapting the same feel within the same overarching beats, thus giving us a tense and emotional experience that feels different and very familiar at the same time. Or that's my take on the series, at least. I must admit I was not a big fan of the video game sequel because I thought the original was a masterclass in video game storytelling as a standalone, but I'm very eager to see how things change in the next season that might (or might not) give me a new perspective on Part 2.

It’s so easy to improve the original when you have the game makers running the new product.
The tendrils caming out of the infected mouth makes the infected better in the tv show
Sarah was so good that I wish she was one of the main characters
Hospital scene sucked. It felt rushed the way they decided to film it woth time skips & sad music in the b.g. instead of actually live combat at that moment.
The show did some really good things. I’ll give it that. It was a good show. But saying it was better than the game sounds like something said by someone who didn’t PLAY the game. At the very least the show didn’t have that ever present threat of infected and the urgency to survive. To forage for survival. In the game you got to die over and over. So surviving the encounters was stressful because it was hard. It’s what drove the story. In the show you already knew Joel and Ellie were impervious. I disagree with this assessment….
In my head-canon, HBO David is a serial killer from the before times. Now, he has a flock to meet his “need”, and recognized that same sociopathy in Ellie, and wanted to be her Sith Master…
Spoiler alert: if you’ve never played the second game keep scrolling. I’m calling it now, no way the second season plays out completely like the second game. I highly doubt they’ll kill off Joel that quick this time. I’m guessing the whole second season will be build up and he’ll die in the season finale and then Ellies quest for vengeance will be the plot of the third season. I just can’t see them dumping Pedro that quick, he’s too hot of a commodity right now.

Lol no. It did nothing better than the game and the game is not a masterpiece. #10 is straight up wrong too. The show has more infected in one episode than the entire game combined.
they did hundreds of which are worse
Nothing.
None of it.
So glad they added a whole hour to portray homosexuality as normal instead of having the banter between Bill and Ellie
Nothing, the tv show did nothing better than the game. There i just saved you guys 12 min.

Disagree, I liked that they fleshed out many characters, giving them more depth. They could also show more perspectives as video games often demand a strong narrative perspective for the player to feel connected with the player character. I liked how they humanized Joel and made him more human, since this is not a game he needed to be vulnerable to be relatable, he now cannot hear properly in one ear, he has pain his knees, he felt more his age. I also think they made many better decisions in more and world building, knowing history of fungal infection it made sense it spread from grain and from Indonesia than South America. It seems clear for me reading your comments that you do not seems to like film/tv as an art form and find it inferior to video games. In that case I do not think that no matter what the show would do, you would never like it.
And Netflix is a joke make funny resident evil 😂😂😂 make BLM wesker
Did better -episode 3 -background contexts -pedro Pascal (fresh take on character, original was equally great) -jackson village Did bad- -ellie actress -irregular pacing -DLC episode -race-swaps (worst way to promote diversity)
The show is just plain inferior to the game
The show was just worse
I'm no Christian, but it seems like another (and tiresome) attack on Christianity to make David a preacher. Completely unnecessary.

No,it’s there to show him as a predator using Christianity not an attack on it ,I’m a Christian and I know a looooot of “preachers” that use Christianity to get money from others and sexual favors

Funny I am a christian. Ive given many sermons, bible studies, and lead small groups. I'm currently working on a bachelor's in Bible theology and I am considering being ordained as a pastor after I get my masters and teaching credentials. Anyways, when I saw that they added "precher" to David I jokingly thought "why we gotta be the bad cult guy." Then I thought of my brother who majored in micro-biology. In a similar situation he once said "why does it always have to be an evil mad scientist" Was it a necessary add I don't think so 🤷♀️ but it didn't have a negative effect on me personslly except for it seeming like an over played concept, or as you put it tiresome.
Then hopefully it doesn't give us TLOU's needlessly bleak ending. Game of The Year my ass.
After watching the show and playing the PS5 version usually an episode or two behind, I am 100% certain the show is better. I love the game and am currently playing Part 2, but the character development in the show is simply better, and the changes they made were typically better. Especially the first part - FAR better in the show...I was honestly disappointed in the game version by comparison and was worried the rest of the game would be a letdown. Luckily the game was still great. The changes in Kansas were much better as well. I do think there were a couple things the show could have adapted better from the game, but side-by-side comparison, the show is better.

The show has better development? The show rushed through the whole story. Joel and Ellies relationship is development perfectly in the game. In the show their relationship is so rushed is not even funny
I'm gonna say divercity, it clearly is an important issue for Neil ''the woke game director'' Druckman, so good job there. I honestly dont care, just find him annoying with this BS, just write a good story that doesnt only focus on personal life (this is where mostly woke tv shows and movies fail, because if character is lesbian, 90% of the plot is going to be about it).

Wikipedia Early Life check moment. TLOU Part 2 proves your point. Druckman says not to have fun playing it and then gives you pro weed, pro homosexual, propaganda

We knew Ellie was a gay since 2014 when The last of us left behind dlc came out It's been 9 year it time you get over it. Also Bill was gay in the original game so there is that.

@@oisinmckellar3046 there’s a difference between a quick kiss or mention and the HBO episode 3 drawn out bedroom scene. When a characters main trait is there sexuality, it’s not a good character

Pretty sure Bill being a survivalist was way more important.
There's 0 things! Show is just overrated
The only thing the series did better was adding depth to the characters. But they completely changed a lot of the outcomes of these characters. It was good to get to meet Sarah, see how Bill built his town full of boobytraps and get to know more about his relationship with Frank but they still should’ve gave them the same end like in the game. Where they find frank dead that way you can experience the emotions bill went thru when he found him instead of us just watching him get emotional. There was no need to end Bills story when the game didn’t portray that at all. Plus they completely skipped a lot of great scenes with bill and within his town. I wanted to see bill and Ellie interact and argue like in the game.
Don't see how it did anything BETTER... 💀
