@@Shenruss Why would there be a portal to the Phantom Zone in a place that has nothing but unconnected platforms where if you slip, there's nothing you can do to keep from falling into the PZ? That makes as much sense as there being a 'Disintegration Pit' built into the floor of the Pre-CRISIS fortress so Supes can trick his cousin into falling into it when he's mad at her. Oh, wait...

  • @joetune1945

To be fair to the ones who scream 'phantom zone' when someone mentions what happened in 'Superman 2' there was a TV edit where Luthor & the Zoners were being carted off to jail after the falls into the mists. THAT'S RIGHT! The idea of Superman even letting villains suffer a 'Disney Death' is so disturbing to some folks that their deaths were retconned-out for TV. So of course these same folks are gonna freak out when Superman kills someone who basically wants to commit suicide-by-cop-via-threatening-innocents.

@@joetune1945 Please recall, my ddue that 1] This film was heavily edited. So the major film release cut and the Donner cut are 2 different things. In another version, we _saw_ the criminals get hauled away by police. In one novelization [tied to the movie] its said he used the forteress tos end them away, not end their lives. So, yeah... there's that. 2] In the Donner cut, we *saw* the criminals get sent back to the Phantom Zone transport gate....the big crystal like "cell" which is *not* the Zone itself, but _takes people_ there. You should be able to find it online. 3] Even if that's not the case, _Superman II_ itself *shows* how the Fortress is connected to Superman psionically; he was able to control a lot of its technology with his mind...hence the showcasing of powers he didn't really use outside the fortress [the S-shield force trap, the teleportation adn holograms]. All Supes had to do was send a command "once they hit the pit, cast them into zone"....story done.

I should mention that Superman later went back and rescued Pete Ross's son, in a subsequent "DC Comics Presents" (with the Phantom Stranger). Superman decided he had made the wrong call by putting the well-being of the future above the right thing today, so he brought Jon Ross back to earth. Superman felt Jon can always go back and become the leader the LSH felt he needs to be -- but only if it's his choice when he grows up. So, presumably it doesn't even alter the LSH future.

I don't understand the rage at Superman killing Zod in Man of Steel. It wasn't the first time he's done that, and honestly out of all the times he's killed Zod, him doing it to save a family is the most faithful to Superman. I mean, he decided to "kill" Doomsday because that was the only way to stop him in the comics.

The act of taking a life isn't inherently good or bad. Context matters. A cop isn't evil for killing a violent criminal and a soldier isn't evil for killing an enemy combatant, and Superman totally isn't evil for killing a supervillain that deliberately threatened innocent lives. Superman had no other option: it was either killing Zod or letting him destroy humanity. That wasn't an easy choice for him, he willingly took a life and that decision would follow him forever, but in the end, he chose the mission and innocent lives over his own personal comfort. That's what I love about this movie, that it forced me to challenge my preconceptions about Superman and the world he lives in. I know that some people still take issue with Man of Steel, but you can't deny that it's an interesting route to take Superman in.

I was powerfully impressed (and, yes, shocked) when Mongul had Superman down and told him he was going to kill him and then kill everyone he ever loved and then enslave the human race, so Superman looked up at him , his eyes lighting up red with heat vision, and said softly, "Burn." The buildup to that moment was brilliant.

The thing with Lois dying in pregnancy always bothered me. How the heck is the kid getting enough solar energy at that point to be strong enough to kick through her. She'd have to be sunbathing constantly in a VERY suggestive way to accomplish... NOTHING. That version of Superman was a slow-charge on the solar energy and took years for his powers to develop. Given that the infant was half-human, it should have taken even longer with EXPOSURE to the sun, much less in Lois's womb.

One moment that shocked me, that I'll never forget, was from the 70's in his The World's Finest where Superman is under-cover, and allows a person to be machine-gunned, (so he doesn't blow his cover,) but then "saves" the victim by performing surgery at super-speed when he's alone. I remember, and think about it to this day as being "so wrong." As always thank you so very much all for your videos.

imo killing Joker--while surprising if you weren't expecting it--was one of the least shocking things Supes did in Injustice. I'm pretty sure a baby in the womb isn't getting much sunlight. Superman didn't have all of his abilities day one as a baby either, he gained them over time the more he was exposed to the light. So Lois would be perfectly safe from the baby. Having sex with Superman might be more dangerous to her, but that is a different issue, I suppose Superman could have a red sun light room that they have happy times together and she would be fine, I'm sure he would plan for that, Superman isn't an idiot, people always underestimate him. Who ever wrote that comic (most likely Byrne), doesn't understand shit about Superman's lore

Leaving aside the different continuities that Superman got his powers as he got older, the baby is entirely encased in the womb, there is no sunlight to metabolize. This list sucks. There are way more atrocious things the Man of Steel has done. Not only does the Injustice comics and games list incidents worse than Superman killing the Joker (like Superman killing SHAZAM, you know a kid, just because SHAZAM questioned Kal), but also there was a Silver Age comic (I think), when Kal killed Zod and his buddies, Judge, Jury, and Executioner style, which was way worse than how it happened in Man of Steel. How was it worse? Simple: Zod and his gang were already depowered due to Gold Kryptonite , and they were stuck in another dimension. All Zod did was say that he will take revenge on Superman and others, and Superman killed him and his whole gang for it. Not by snapping his neck or punching him through his chest, but my exposing him to Green Kryptonite.

I don't get why him killing is Zod is out of character if you'd rather let an innocent family die then kill the person trying to kill them you're just as bad as the villain

Killing Zod was taken directly form the comics. You need to do some actual research, not just slapping words on a page and reading them.

Absolutely nothing wrong with Superman killing Zod in the 'Man of Steel'. Zod was going to kill a family, and then make it his mission to kill everyone on Earth, he was pure hate and evil. Superman did what he had to do and that's why he's the greatest.

Except that he could have moved his head away from the family, and that the family was cornering themselves when realistically they would have just ran away from the line of fire

Even if the family got away, the greater issue is that Zod had to be stopped. There was nothing on Earth that could stop him except his death. With just one snap of Zod's neck, Superman saved an entire planet. @@Darkrockmanbeyond

True, the scene was purposely created to bring the fight to an end. Superman had enough of Zod's threats to destroy an entire planet and all humanity, so with one snap of Zod's neck, Superman saved an entire planet.@@TimTE01

After all these years, I still don't get the hate for him killing Zod. He didn't want to, he tried to talk to him and get him to stop, Zod made it clear he wasn't going to, so he took the only course he felt would save Earth. Afterwards, he didn't spout off a quip or one liner, he clearly was upset and regretted he had to do it....seemed more like Superman than the one that smirked as he tossed a de powered Zod to his death in Superman 2
