The Wounded from TNG. Dealt with the themes of PTSD & confronting one's own bigotry, O'Brien's duet with his former captain is one of the most beautiful moments in all of Star Trek, and it introduced the Cardassians to the franchise. Yet is hardly ever brought up in the greatest episodes conversation

He was my favorite, by far, on ENT. Archer could have died and I wouldn't be bothered at all. Btw, that Riker guilt trip, no pun intended, used a malfunctioning holodeck on the Enterprise D, again. Trip didn't die, at least not as shown. He died an old man, after years of a happy life with the woman he loved.

Nope, it was all BS, I have been assured this for years..... Pointing out that from 99-01 I performed more upgrades, installations, site surveys, re coding to get xyz who the f**k wrote this foe what the f**k is streamline using what the f**k language third party (should be an 11th party term) app than ever before or since makes no difference. Explaining that i was taking it easy compared to some others I knew makes no difference either. So, again, it would've been fine, everyone says so..... In all seriousness, pray none of us ever has to go through anything like that again..... money was nice though, 31/12/99 I think I was getting tot from 6 different companies just in case, all of whom were told about each other and that everything was covered but insisted on paying anyway.

The Empath has, and will always have, a special place in my heart. It was a powerful exploration of life for a lot of empathic, compassionate people. And a lot of us were drawn to Star Trek-TOS because of their compassion, their inability to ignore the pain of others, and the IDIC. The emotional content meant far more to us than the "science."

Heart of Glory is a very underrated episode from the first season of TNG. It laid the groundwork for some of the future Klingon themes that would be explored in TNG and DS9 as well as gave Worf a truly great speech at the end. The episode also explores the so called “lost boy” phenomenon we see today of young men turning to violence that makes it very relevant.

The first season of TNG had few good episodes, but I’ve always loved “The Arsenal of Freedom.” It’s themes of weapon development, sales, and use is compounded by Geordi’s struggle to survive a dangerous situation while under ridicule by a superior ranking officer and setting an example for those below him. Let’s not forget the great performance of Vincent Schiavelli as the holographic salesman who obviously cared nothing of what he sold destroying anything including his own race.

A sequel to the last episode of Voyager before the finale, where the doctor writes "Photons Be Free" would be a great episode and could even be done on a different trek show where Robert Picardo comes back as an older actor playing older holograms (say they age because it's easier on humans to see them age or something).

I've always thought "Too Short a Season" from TNG's first season would have worked better if they dropped the A plot and reworked the B plot (conflict because of a Prime Directive violation from decades earlier that involved arming two sides equally) into a sequel to "A Private Little War."

DS9 episode: "Progress": Kira spends an episode trying to convince a farmer to leave a moon thats going to be rendered uninhabitable for a mining operation that'll help all of Bajor. a) It deals with "needs of the many vs rights of the few" b) Raises the issue of revolutionary heroes... how do you handle it when you're the one that has to make these kinds of decisions? c) If someones make a conscious decision that'll kill them do you intervene? I raise this one because Discovery decided that letting someone die was the correct course of action out of "respecting their autonomy", which I consider bloody stupid as did Kira. Whilst she sympathised with the farmers plight, what wasn't going to let him die on principle.

Three DS9 episodes I'd add to the discussion: "Duet", a powerful bottle episode where Kira confronts a Cardassian whom she believes to be a war criminal, who at the end was impersonating a war criminal to force his people to confront the atrocities done to the Bajorans. "Body Parts". Admittedly the A-plot where Quark is essentially blacklisted by his fellow Ferenghi, was a rote affair, but I loved the B-plot, where Kira became a surrogate mother for Miles and Keiko's son, and ends up joining them in an extended family. "The Assignment". The first appearance of the Kostamojin or 'Pah Wraiths', and a nice sense of ratcheting suspense and O'Brien has to sabotage the station to save Keiko. Also a nice foreshadowing of Rom's budding romance with Leeta, as her telling him about Bajoran history and legends provided the clue Miles need to save his wife.

  • @Tuning3434

I would consider Duet as a deeply embedded in the great episode's, never heard anybody else considering that episode otherwise. A tiny glimpse in season DS9 what DS9 will offer in the future. I don't really feel for The Assignment, not even close to the top of the 'Miles must suffer' episode's, and those generally aren't that great either.

Duet is almost universally loved so I don't know why you're putting it on here. Body Parts, like all the Ferengi episodes, is pretty damn forgettable. The Assignment was a terrible episode that had no consequences whatsoever, it feels like it was just shoehorned in there to fulfill contractual obligation, much like Q episodes, time travel, or mirror episodes often are used in this and other series.

To be clear, the planet in A Private Little War had prior contact with Starfleet, Kirk specifically. He and the leader of the faction he armed are friends(though the friendship is greatly strained by Kirk kissing the man's wife). But one could hope that the Federation and the Klingons ended their interference sooner rather than later. It would be basically a death sentence if they continued to fight all the way up to the peace conference and beyond.

Great vid and this why character development is so critical to make a long lasting show. Hey @TrekCulture and Sean: That “much hyped non-global catastrophe” that was to be Y2K was actually a real thing. The reason it didn’t become a catastrophe is because myself and thousands of my fellow IT professionals spent millions of hours fixing it, right up to the deadline. I was working 70+ hour weeks at a major corporation for over a year, upgrading systems, fixing code, and building monitoring tools, so when the new year rang in, you could drink and toast in comfort. It’s really annoying that folks now like to pretend that nothing happened and the whole thing must have been a cringe-worthy and over-hyped news story. It was real and we busted our asses to prevent it. So, you’re welcome. Please stop referring to Y2K so dismissively. It’s an insult to all the hard work that was done to prevent it.

The TOS episode "Miri" always struck me as an episode that worked with emotion and personal-level conflict. While Miri is hitting puberty, she's starting to succumb to the planet's deadly disease that affects "grups," she's also having feelings for Kirk. The nice thing is, he recognizes them, but stays above them, but works with her, Bones and Spock to try and figure out what's killing them. The whole mystery of the disease they suffer, and the potentially deadly mischievousness of Miri's friends make for an interesting mix of behaviors and confrontations. They finally unravel the mystery, come up with a cure, and potentially get Miri's post-apocalyptic society back on track (though they ony barely allude to it). The fact that you get great performances from a young Kim Darby and Michael J. Pollard just speaks to the episode's emotional depth.

I don't know how much the following episodes are overlooked, but I don't think they typically rise to the top of Voyager episode lists or Star Trek episode lists in general. 'Demon' (season 4) and 'Course: Oblivion' (season 5) definitely deserve another look (in that order). 'Demon' is a fine episode, but it's 'Course: Oblivion' (the one that 'Demon' sets up) that really stands out. It has such a compelling, heartbreaking story that it's my second favorite Voyager episode (second only to 'Timeless'). 'The First Duty' is arguably one of TNG season 5's better episodes, taking a character that has kind of annoyed viewers in the past and knocking him down a few pegs while making him a lot more relatable. It's my favorite Wesley Crusher episode, and I think it definitely deserves a second look. (Side note: It features a character on whom Voyager's Tom Paris was based. It even has the same actor playing him.) It's arguably overshadowed by 'In the Pale Moonlight' (the episode which comes right after it), but 'Inquisition' is one of my favorites from DS9 season 6. Sloan is such a great character, and I love the twists and turns in the plot.

I'd say The Dauphin. The season 2 episode where Wesley erm Crushers on an alien girl. There's plenty to enjoy in this one. For one Wesley is just a regular flawed teenager unsure how to approach a girl leading to the iconic Riker flirting with Guinan scene. There's some truly lovely scenes between Wesley and this sheltered girl Salia including one where he shows her some space vistas on the holodeck which really shows Wesley's giddy love of exploration and the girls dissaproving chaperone is just the queen of sass. It's just a fun episode all around.

My thumbs up is because I was always skeptical that Picard could so easily revert back to his role after being away for 50 years (his time). I am now however at the age where I can remember things from 50 years ago as a young adult and many of those memories are fairly vivid. If I review photos of events where I was involved with people I knew, the memories do come flooding back. If somehow I were sent back to that time, with the body I had then, I am pretty sure I would meld back into the life with no one being the wiser. Now, it is one of my favorite episodes.

As a Data fan, loved Pen Pal. While he has logical reasons for doing what he did, it was such a HUMAN thing to do, so it was extraordinary that it was he, of all people who did it. (And he didn't just do it to "try to be human.") Seems like an experiment done by a little boy (playing around with communication equipment) that ended up in an unexpected way. That he ANSWERED (totally a no-no and he knows it), that he CONTINUED to communicate with her, and pushed it to the point of bringing the girl to the ship (maybe his lack of social awareness made it so he didn't notice and more and more irritated tone in the Captain's voice?). Would have loved to have seen what happened to those people, especially Sarjenka. Actually, on that note, would have liked to have seen what became of "Ethan" from "Future Imperfect," Jeremy from "The Bonding," and Timothy from "Hero Worship." Especially "Ethan" as he came from a culture unknown to them before.

There was a need for a lot of follow-ups. Or if not episodes, at least some throwaway mentions. One that always bugs me is when Archer steals the warp coil from those aliens so he can get to Degra on time. As a result it was going to take the aliens like 4 years or something, to get home. I think he should have made sure they got picked up by maybe a Xindi Aquatics ship that could have gotten them home in maybe a few hours, like they did for Enterprise.
