So in Ireland you say, "We are going to launch our Moon rocket at about a quarter to nine." or "Your plane is at half past." I prefer exact time. And yes, new construction has earth grounding. So there are no old electrical in Ireland? By Black Irish do you mean White people with black hair? Water heaters and central heating or cooling stay on. It's cheaper to keep something warm than to heat it up from freezing. It's also easier than replacing burst pipes.

No, we don't turn off our A/C, or water heater, unless we are going away for a long time. It actually costs MORE to bring a house from whatever to where you want it, then to leave it on. We have these things called "thermostats". All building circuitry, by law, MUST have a ground, and not a floating ground. In the wetter areas of a building we have GFI (ground fault interrupter) outlets for safety.
@yoshidadaimyo3507

True. On a hot day in the Southern U.S. once you get your house at a reasonable temperature its cheaper to leave your AC running with the thermostat maintaining that temp than to cut it off when you leave allowing your house to get ungodly hot then forcing your poor AC to fight like crazy to cool it back down.

We have earth ground. Yes, even the two prong plugs are grounded. All are grounded at the circuit box. Also the service into the box is 220 VAC. Split into two phases. Just so you know.
I understand your confusion about leaving the AC on. In the UK +Ireland, the word "weather" is synonymous with "rain"; here, it's possible for that word to mean "40+ degrees for days- even weeks- on end"... if you turn the AC off, you come home to an unbearable sweatbox that will take 3-4 hours to cool off again. Modern air conditioners know this, and have smart modes with different power settings, making it actually cheaper to keep the house cool than to bring it back up again from Hell multiple times per day.
That's how we give directions in Pittsburgh..."you know, where the Pizza Hut used to be..." Pittsburgh dad does a pretty good impression.

Kentucky has its share of people with Irish ancestry. Some of my Anglo-Irish ancestors lived there awhile in the 19th century. They brought language and culture with them as they emigrated and it shows there and in neighboring states.
Some of us are raised to leave on the TV or lights on to make it appear that there's activity in the house if we're going to be out of the house for an extended amount of time. At some restaurants like Sizzler , after you pay , you generally seat yourself. More likely than not, most people getting Chinese take out will take it out of the container and warm it up once they make it home. Courtesy Clerks ie supermarket baggers are employees of supermarkets and it's part of their job to bag groceries. Sometimes the cashier will bag groceries. There's usually a rack of plastic bags (@ least at my supermarket ) at the end of the conveyor belt beside a rack of reusable canvas bags which are for sale , then there are both paper and plastic bags below the conveyor. Now it's not uncommon for shoppers to get a few extra bags to redistribute what they bought. There are a few supermarkets that customers do have bag their own groceries, I think ALDI is one (although I have never been to an ALDI)
I like how in one of your videos you laughed at Americans using the phrase "willy-nilly", and now you use it all the time

You're close! I'm sharing this. I want to see you get 100k!
My cousin is an electrician who installs "smart appliances" and they can be controlled with timers and apps. You may access thermostats and lighting via your phone or tablet and have your house ready for you (if it's not already on a timer). I tell him that the switches on the wall are enough for me but some people really enjoy the smart tech. Many options now are more energy-efficient so that leaving them on for longer times isn't always a bad thing.
On the topic of bad directions, the first time I ever visited my best friends home town, the directions to his house included the phrase "turn left where the gas station used to be."
My first job in 1998 was bagging groceries. We even had special carts to load them on, and then we had to take the groceries to the person’s car and pack them into their trunk (boot 😁). The store has since gone out of business. I haven’t seen anything like this for years and years. We do have Aldi where you have to pay a quarter to use a cart, and bring your own bags.
Tipping in the US is way overdone. Last time i went to dinner with my sister, our waitress brought us water, took our order and that was the last we saw of her. A guy from the kitchen brought the food and by then my water was empty. So i ate with no water while i was eating or after finishing. Zero refill on the water. And my stupid sister still insisted we tip about 20%. That's clearly when you don't leave any tip.
Diane! You always give me such a good giggle and smile when I watch your videos! ❤️
Here in Florida our stores will pack your bags and walk your cart out to your car and unload it for you! With no tip accepted
The US has a grounding system, but some plugs are polarized instead.
15% tip is the standard in America. A lot of times it's added to your bill. Texans give directions like that. Go straight to Billy's old barn and turn left. Then go until you get to the century pecan tree and turn right.
In Florida we leave the AC on because it'd mean coming home to a deathtrap if it was off all day.
I live in Arizona, so it can get VERY hot indoors if we don't leave the air conditioning on. Not only would it require more energy to re-cool the house to a liveable temperature, but I have pets that can't just zip off their fur coats at will. I don't leave fans, radios, the TV, lights or anything else unnecessary on when I'm home or not. A lot of Americans have on demand hot water heaters or have regular hot water heaters with timers so it isn't heating the water all of the time.
#7 - Turn things off? Had my hot tub last winter turn itself off. Shoveled the snow, came back out in bathing suit and towel to discover a small ice rink :) Had to wait until March for it to defrost. No thank you ma'am, I'll be leaving that one on.
@overit8478

That is a legitimate fear of mine. I often panic that I forget to turn it back on after cleaning the filters. Hope it didn't cause any damage!
I live in Arizona (the desert) during the summer it’s often 118 degrees as the high and 95 degrees as the low (47 Celsius) it’s actually more expensive to turn off your air con when your not home, if you turn it off it has to work much harder to cool the whole house when you get back. So everyone here just turns the air con up a few degrees so your saving money that way. I’m sure you lot in Ireland will never have to experience temperatures such as this so you didn’t know. Just wanted you to understand by leaving my air con on and just changing the temperature actually saves me money.
I'm so stoked to see that you're attracting the attention of sponsors! Your channel is underappreciated for its value as a public service to keep us Americans from making too much of an ass of ourselves 😂 I look forward to employing your advice when I make it across the pond.

If you see someone eating from a Chinese takeout container in an American show, they are implying the person is lazy, in a hurry, a batchelor, etc. It is the equivalent to drinking directly from the milk carton.

Comedian Jerry Seinfeld has a show where he takes other celebrities out for coffee and usually breakfast. They have talked about the expectation of tipping when you're a known celebrity. Jerry usually tips the amount of the bill or more.
My wife and I experienced the "bill doesn't automatically come after the meal" when we were there last year we must've sat there for an additional 20 mins....lol
Certified Electrician here; US electric systems have a dedicated grounding conductor. The only exceptions to this rule are 1) less than 50 volts nominal 2) a small electrical appliance that was designed to not need a grounding conductor, but it still requires a special power cord (it's double insulated) and 3) when the power conductors are inside of a conduit that is, itself, made of metal and is grounded; such as steel pipe.
I grew up in a small town (1.5 square miles.) that had 82 liquor licenses. We navigated by bars. From The Crestwood go down Main St. To The Pub. Turn right when you get to The Knights of Columbus, turn left. Go down to The Portuguese Fisherman, turn right...
Hi! Di! You did the best RAID ad ever! I was resisting it but now you’ve got me curious. When thinking about whether it pays to turn things off you have to consider how much power a device draws. I’m trying to do this without too much maths, just for you. You could do this by seeing how many watts of power something uses to work. For example, a light bulb uses very little power, especially if it’s an LED light bulb. Probably not worth turning on and off every time you walk in and out of a room. A fridge with a freezer has to run constantly but you can make things last longer by having your freezer and fridge temps lower. Balance that against the extra power it will draw and meh? An air conditioner has a compressor. So it will use a lot, a lot more power than a fan on high. So getting one with a built in thermostat is probably worth the money. But, if you add ceiling fans to a few key rooms in your house you can wind up needing fewer units on for comfort. A thing to remember is that more than a cooler an air conditioner is basically a de-humidifier, taking the excess water out of the air in your place, thus making you less miserable. Fans are nice, but they don’t change the quality of the air in your place. In the US our water heaters are on all the time! I know! We have three possible power sources for hot water: gas, electric, and to a lesser extent solar. Then hot water is either stored hot in a very insulated tank, which makes it less expensive to keep it on all the time and instant heating which only heats the hot water you are using right now (no tank). What makes sense depends a lot on local utility rates. There was a time when many homes used coal for heat and hot water but very few homes do this today though it is still possible to get coal delivered near me. I’m not sure if this is at all helpful but as usual I’m enjoying the show,
ED falling asleep! Hilarious! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣❤❤
You should consider visiting small town America. Most restaurants aren't like this.
Depending on what state you are in, air treatment machines running all the time are necessary. Especially people who suffer from terrible allergies.

In restaurants in Ireland one also needs to be aware of the term "to fix up" as in fix up (pay) your bill. On one trip, Mom and I were having a late light lunch in our hotel in Kilkenny before going out to do more exploring of the town. We had gone up to our room to freshen up before lunch. Our waitress came over when we were just about finished eating and asked us to "fix up". We looked at each in utter confusion! (We did not think we looked too bad!) We had ask her what she meant! She as very apologetic as she explained that she was asking us to "fix up (pay) our bill" so that they could close out the lunch receipts.
Chinese take-out cartons in America are designed to be converted into paper plates. I forgot where I learned this from, but you may like to look it up.

In American we know how to properly grounds our electric in our house.
About 10 years ago on a trip to Ireland, we bought and brought back 5 or 6 grocery bags from Garvey's - still use them today. And yes, direction telling is a wee bit different. We were up by Bushmills following directions to the B&B. Ended up driving down a bicycle path :)
When I ask for the time, I need exact time because I live minute to minute.
US power outlets do have a grounding plug. Not all electrical devices require a ground.
We shop at Aldis and have the bags and a couple quarters in the car. Unless I'm asked to be specific, I generally round up or down with time. Must be the Irish in me. 😉
Now I know why it's like pulling teeth when you want ice in your soft drink in Europe. Refills aren't free. Got it. Good video. Have a nice week and enjoy.

about the Chinese food takeout... in real life we usually get the plastic and aluminum containers, too! i always thought it was so weird how tv and movies show people eating out of those boxes..... no one does that !
@GFSLombardo
4 жыл бұрын
The producers of todays movies and TV programs are from the generation where the little cardboard boxes were an intrinsic part of eating Chinese takeout. As time passes with the generations these props will disappear and be replaced by newer take out technology. BTW in older TV and movies all the cast members almost always smoked cigarettes. This prop is now practically a relic of a bygone era; except when a character is to be shown as a "baddie" or as a "rebel/outcast". Also how many "pay phones" are now seen in current non-period piece TVs and movies, let alone office desks without computers? . Culture often has to catch up to the current technology....
Great video.
Americans rarely use the 24hr clock (or military time as they call it) Europe uses it a lot so prepare for that

In Ottawa, Canada, the server won't bring you your bill without asking, and they get annoyed if you ask for it. Basically it takes forever to actually leave when you're done.
For things like thermostat air conditioning/heaters here in the states, it is more efficient to keep it on at a higher/lower temperature than to turn it off completely. For example, during the summer, if I want the temperature when I'm home to be 75F then I can set it to 80F during the day to cut down on how much it runs and turn it back down to 75F when I get home from work. The whole house won't have to be completely cooled down every day when I get home, thus cutting down on electricity consumption.
Nice video!!

And not to forget the ever popular "it's over yonder a ways."
More people in the states are becoming used to the idea of bringing your own bags and using a quarter to get a shopping cart, thanks to Aldi. Also, many of those other things you mentioned, they also fit in the American south, like directions and telling time.
An Irish woman doing an "Irish accent"=Priceless! What county, region or social class were you doing? Or more simply, whose accent on TRY CHANNEL/IRISH PEOPLE were you doing?
Used to be the time was rounded out. I think this changed after most people got digital watches instead of analog. Now they glance and just say what the watch says. A lot of us old fogies who still have analog watches will round to the nearest 5 minutes.
Wait, when you say you need three "drinks" with your dinner, "drinks" means "Rum & Diet Coke" right? 🤣🤣🥃🥃

Of course there has to be alcohol involved... She is Irish after all. 😂😂😂
Hi Diane, paying the bill at restaurants the states, the waiter or waitress don;t always hand the bill to you, you can ask bill when your ready to pay up, but It depends on the restaurant though.
In the US the average yearly cost of our water heaters run around $780 USD (705 Euro). Its 10:45.23.123 in the morning. In the US we have earth grounding, not all appliances are grounded these are the two prong power cords and usually low power and low cost items like small radios and some kitchen appliances, but a lot of higher quality and/or higher power items like water heaters and washing machines are earth ground.
I think the time thing is kind of generational. I've noticed most older folks say "half past" or "quarter of," but younger people always give the exact time. I think it might come from growing up around digital clocks versus analog.
Loved the American Dad clip at the beginning, one of my favorite shows lol
I'm American. Editor Diane is my spirit animal.
You leave HVAC and water heaters on because its harder on the equipment, and more expensive, to cool a hot house, or heat a cold one. Theyre attached to a thermostat that'll turn them on/off depending on where you set it. So it'll get the house to temp and then turn off :) and only turn back on when it drops above/below it'll turn back on :) Also, saying "nine o'seven" is easier then "ten passed nine" :) 💘😁
I live in the south.. the HVAC stays on year round. No matter if it's on A/C or heat. It waste more energy to turn it off & on. Some areas of America don't use central air... I really do not understand that since window/wall units cost more in the long run.

Mer Maid Parts of the US need air conditioning only 3-4 months a year and not full-time during that period. I think I ran my one window unit maybe a total of 4 weeks this past summer. Most of the time, an open window and a fan is enough to keep things cool. I live in northern New England. Also, there is no way to fit central air into a 120 year old house that does not have forced hot air heating ducts. You can get systems that run the cool air in hoses up the outside walls of the house, but for lots of people the expense isn’t worth the short amount of time it would be needed each year. That said, a lot of new housing does have air conditioning as an upgrade.
Getting ice and a straw with your soft drink can be a challenge in Ireland. My sister evidently can't drink a diet coke without both, and we spent a lot of time hunting for both...
I always have a strange smell in my house... Vinny (my pup) is usually the guilty party. Fun video. I could honestly get used to a lot of those changes, especially the time and tipping. My mom was half Irish🇮🇪 and half Italian🇮🇹, and she couldn't give directions to get out of the house, much less to somewhere in town. We decidedly need to fix your fizzy drink situation. First off, €3.50 ($4.00) is just too darn expensive. Then you don't even get refills? That's highway robbery! I really enjoyed the video. Hope you have a wonderful weekend! Keep on smiling! 🤩💚💚💚☘🇮🇪💚💚💚
I have been doing mainframe programming for many years and also a USAF vet. I have a tendency of responding to "What time is it?" in military time (for example: 08:30pm is 20:30). My whole house has builtin surge protection and all electrical outlets are grounded 3 prong outlets (plugs). We shop alot at Aldi's (Germany based grocery chain). They scan your items and place them in another cart. It is up to you to box or bag them yourself. We usually have nice thick insulated bags for frozen items and heavy duty canvas bags for everything else.
When I subscribed the bad smell went away... I commented this at 10:41 in the morning ... Thanks for the info Diane
Nice Dr. Who reference. My already high estimation of you has risen yet again!
Interesting differences between America and Ireland, delivered in an interesting and talented manner. Thank you
I have heard that American tourists have annoying tendency to use “Top of the morning!” (sometimes uttered in a miserable, ham fisted brogue) as a morning greeting when visiting Ireland, which supposedly produces an effect equivalent to fingernails on a chalkboard to Dubliners.

It’s funny though
Wait staff in America is paid less than minimum wage hourly. They have to claim how much they made in tips at the end of the night and it's assumed that tips will raise them to the minimum wage
