10 Signs You Lack Self Awareness

Self awareness, also known as metacognition is a measure of higher intelligence. What makes human different from other animals is that we have the ability to think about how we think. This means the ability to plan, set goals, and analyze. A lack of self awareness causes us to become self-destructive and to put ourselves in toxic or unhealthy situations. You do not want to be on auto-pilot or a robot do you? What makes us unique and grow is our ability to be self aware. And that's why psych2go's videos aim to help us learn more about ourselves.
Are you looking for tips on how to be more self aware? The first step towards being self aware is to learn more about it and recognize the signs we might be lacking self awareness.
Did you know that self-love requires self awareness? If you relate to this video and want to understand more about self love and whether you might be lacking that too, we also made a video on this: • 10 Signs You Lack Self...

    Maybe you can try to ask yourself what you really want, try to analyze and find the roots of your emotions, don't harshly blame yourself for anything and try to improve instead, be more mindful of what you want instead of what others want and draw your own boundaries, be more independent and not rely on other people for your own worth Self awareness is about knowing what you really want and knowing yourself, all of you, your human nature and everything, understanding yourself can almost help you understand others since you would know more of your deep inner flaws, including the ones that you can't control and would always be there, in everyone

    Tom , the video emphasizes habits of an individual. My comment was meant to broaden the search for self improvement beyond just self reflection because we often miss things about ourselves. These mistakes can lead us to be stuck. Having a great coach or having great friendships (honest and reciprocal) can really help people become more introspective. Does that make sense? Cohesion just means a community with which you get along - analogous to a healthy family (they can laugh with you but also tell you that you have food between your teeth)!

    I sure needed to hear this! After decades of believing a certain truth only to be faced with undeniable evidence that I was wrong was nearly devistating. That was in 2006 and with much pain and self forgiveness and grace Ive become more grounded, loving and am able to be of service in an amazing way. My ego didn't enjoy being exposed, but exposed it was. Its a process and I will continue to live mindfully while smashing down that little narcissistic foundation I previously laid. Lol. Here's a potentially revealing question that I would really appreciate help answering with regards to watching any of these videos: how do you trust your own mind? How do you trust your own feelings? Is it even possible to evaluate yourself objectively?

  • @RadiantSharaShaymin

    @RadiantSharaShaymin

    3 жыл бұрын

    By trusting your own mind and feelings, do you mean how you know they're yours, or that they're right overall, or if you're interpreting them correctly (for example, you know you're feeling anxious and not angry, or that your thoughts are what you believe and not new questions) This sounds really interesting to think about!

  • @Rupert3434

    @Rupert3434

    3 жыл бұрын

    Interpretation, for sure. Like, how do you parse out whether you are interpreting a situation correctly, or reacting to some trigger of unresolved trauma? How do you correctly identify the behaviors in the video within yourself without a certain baseline of self-awareness or self esteem, and how to you prevent yourself from making false attributions based on guilt or an inability to properly judge a situation outside your your own particular emotional standpoint? I'm not bringing this up as a point of academic debate, I bring this up because i ask myself these questions every time I attempt self reflection, and in moments of low mood, anxiety, I often find myself questioning whether or not I am able to make these kinds of interpretations about myself. More to the point, if there was something around which I held an unconscious or emotionally motivated bias, how could I be sure of my own ability to identify it? This is the existential terror of meta-cognition: that we can't always be aware of the things we conceal from ourselves.

    In my opinion, understanding these conditions and states of mind are helpful to get a bigger picture. On other hand I think these are not tools for self assessment. These are tools for professionals to assess others, without bias. Like a doctor can heal you with a "knife"... u can't heal yourself that way... but same time he can't stay in bed for you when you have fever... different tools for different approach... the underlaying problem can be the same... thats my 2 cents

  • @RadiantSharaShaymin

    @RadiantSharaShaymin

    A lot of this is going to be speaking from a personal standpoint, so it won't be the same for everyone and might not be very helpful to you. I implore you, don't hit Read More if you're not ready for a textbook. Sorry I overword everything, but I'm bad at being clear if I don't. (How do you differentiate correct interpretation from trauma?) Anxiety and trauma make in-the-moment self awareness really tough, even if you recognize it and try to start thinking objectively. If you're panicking and need to get out of a situation, even if it's not objectively dangerous, you're not wrong just because it's a reaction of trauma. You might not be able to interpret everything in a panic, but you could be able learn how to prioritize what you need to know in a situation so you don't have everything contributing to the overload. My methods to realizing the difference between danger and anxiety trigger are... unorthodox. No sane person would welcome them, but they still work with the cards I'm given. (How do you identify video's points without a baseline?) Identifying the behaviors from this video without a self awareness baseline would be impossible. I guess the only way to really figure out if you know yourself would just be to check in often and see how much/what has changed. Look for patterns if things change often. Know that, from second to second, you're changing, so expect differences. I've come to realize that, when I start thinking about my dreamworld and things are going horribly wrong there, I probably didn't realize I'm upset about something. Of course, if you just had a revelation recently, that'll change you and/or your patterns. (Side note, having any level of a dreamworld is so helpful in self awareness. If you have a strong enough imagination, you can set up a situation, play it out, and then look back and think "now why did I do that?" and it won't have an impact on reality aside of taking a little time. It doesnt have to be complicated, maybe just 1 or 2 random imaginary people, or it can be a consistent story where... hypothetically, you're a king/queen and you have to think about much bigger situations that really bring out who you are, such as your approach to war, rebellion, traitors, public services and costs, ect. Makes you think a lot when you have to use your responsibility right! But it's still ok if you regret a decision because it's not reality. ...Tangent over!) (How do you prevent false attributes from guilt or emotional standpoint?) Without being able to get out of an emotional standpoint, it's a lot harder. As I said, self awareness in anxiety is really hard. You could always re-evaluate yourself at a later time, when you're more stable and can think more clearly. That's why it's important to come back an reflect often. If you recognize that you're under anxiety or stress, take what you evaluate with a grain of salt. And with guilt, the best way to know that you're giving yourself a false attribute is to first ask "how much control did I actually have over what happened?" You can figure out if you're blaming yourself for something/someone else if you imagine someone else doing what you feel guilty about. If it wasn't the imaginary person's fault, it's not yours either. And if it was, then (cliche alert) your can learn from it and possibly still make amends. (For second half) It's important to not exclusively reflect when you're anxious or upset, thr best times are when you're in a neutral mood. If you're angry or sad, you'll look too much at negative factors. If you're super happy or excited, you may not see anything wrong at all. Not just negative factors, but you won't see weaknesses either. A neutral mood is the strongest base for purely objective thinking. And to the subject of the subconscious and things you conceal from yourself... how to put this? "The more I know, the more I know that I don't know." You won't be able to know everything about yourself. There's so much that's been put into building who you are. It's hard to be ok with not knowing everything about yourself, but in the end, you'll get the clearest reflection of your subconscious if you let it surface on its own. Sometimes you'll dig up something just by passively thinking or reflecting. As a final bit, if you're still worried about whether or not you're reflecting well, try asking yourself "why." Why do I disagree with my friend's opinion? Why do I value that as much as I do? Why do I like these clothes so much? The amount of knowledge you can pick up about yourself just by asking "why" is insane. It can be as simple of an answer as "because I like it" or as complex as... another texbook of explanations. And if you dont know "why" or aren't satisfied with the answer, look at other options. Maybe you've subconsciously compared everything and just settled on what you think is best without realizing. Maybe theres something that you like or agree with more. It doesn't make your previous thoughts inherently wrong it you change your mind, they just weren't as informed.

    Great video!! Key takeaways Emotional intelligence is describing or processing your feelings. Metacognition is a higher form of thinking that gives you the ability to be aware of how you think. Self aware is reflecting and evaluating your thoughts and Lack of self awareness may lead to unrealistic ideas of your own abilities.

    Too many of these are happening to me currently and I’m glad I watched this as I didn’t have that great a day. It’s funny. I’m only working 2 days a week yet I’m having too much trouble with my time management in balancing college and this in a sense is me venting so you don’t have to read this whole post. I’m just so tired and stressed out and I really don’t know how to to express it not because I don’t know how to, I’ve been to therapy since a young age, however my situation with my family lead me to believe, at least in my perspective that my opinion doesn’t matter. Where or not it’s true is unknown but it feels like my contributions or feelings are being ignored and I’ve considered going to the school therapist or whatever they call a college counselor but shrug it off last minute because I’m not the type to emotionally dump my crap out on other people and I’m afraid that I’ll be criticized or not heard. One of the reasons I stopped therapy was mainly because I was tired of paying for her to say what I wanted to hear or my mother wanted to hear and not her honest opinion about what I should do or at least give me some ideas to think about. And that’s one of the biggest reasons I dislike therapy because people only want to hear what they want to hear not the truth hence if it were the opposite people probably wouldn’t be going to therapy because they don’t want to get told off. I honestly don’t know what I was getting on about but I know I have things to work on but I’m clueless on how to go about it and I want to get a new job but lack the resolve and the confidence to follow through because I’m concerned about my mother lashing out. And yes I’m a grown man living in his parents house but although it’s not what I would prefer even an idiot knows that if the pros outweigh the cons you should take the offer but it’s not like I can move out given the circumstances even if I wanted to because I lack the funds and I have nowhere to go excluding friends because I don’t want them to be burdened with my being there. One last thing I forgot to mention is I’ve noticed that I feel more aware or my perception has increased recently and I don’t know if it’s in my head or maybe it’s a sign and i have become more aware. And by aware I mean a lot of subtle things Ike (a persons mannerisms, environmental, body language, or clarity like I have been looking through foggy glasses) if that makes any sense. If you’re still reading this congrats you get a cookie 🍪

    Great video thanks. Does a good job of practicing the tool of inversion (opposites) - on the other side, here's some ideas for signs that you have high self awareness: Disclaimer - I'm attempting to think a little outside the box here: 1. The degree to which you can backtrack the source to your thoughts, emotions and actions (inclusive of motivations of course) 2. The degree to which you make value based and therefore purposeful decisions in thought, emotion and action (that's an easy one though) 3. The degree to which your reasoning about yourself is from an expanded structure. For example, is it from just your "personal identity" or is it inclusive of the influences of your social network, technology, culture, past experiences, ego function and even evolutionary biology? 4. How nuanced is your experience of self awareness, how well can you define self awareness relative to that experience, how well can you then derive a value structure based on that experience and definition and finally how well can you follow that value structure. This is different to number 2 because its specific to self awareness, as well as being about it experientially and abstractly. 5. How highly do you rate the importance of self awareness in your life and how much do your actions match your rating? If its a 10, does that mean you're always deriving new ways to become self more self aware or is there a disconnect? 6. How strong and well defined are your personal boundaries relative to your values? People with high self awareness will often have well defined strongly enforced personal boundaries and people with low self awareness will tend to have at the very least less defined personal boundaries and maybe even no proper value structure at all. 7. How well can you think about and plan for the future and how well do your actions match your plans, finally how well does said strategising match your values? 8. How well can you think about and learn from the past and how well do your actions match prior learning, finally how well does your learning about the past inform your value creation? 9. To what degree do you have control over your reward system? People with less control will often feel like what they're rewarded by as well as their experience of even punishment is out of their control versus people who have more control are able to much better regulate their responses to both reward and punishment to better serve their goals and values, as well as, reverse engineer their reward system to ensure they're motivated towards things in line with their value structure. A simple example for the latter is, let's take someone who's been rewarded from childhood to adulthood by following their religion (it's very popular in their environment) and then one day they decide they want to change these beliefs around their reward structure while staying in the same environment. This means they have to have the capacity to not only introspect to the point of personal change, but maintain social cohesion during the long term dissonance they will experience by staying in the same environment. 10. Just for fun - what's your sincere YT comment to troll YT comment ratio? 11. How well are your actions defined around self actualisation? To the extent they're not is probably to the extent a person isn't self aware, given every moment can be a new learning experience, and to the extent they are, is to the degree that person is self aware. This is very difficult to achieve though without emotional intelligence, which means this could be simultaneously used as a technique to enhance emotional intelligence by being resilient the point of all experiences where you place pressure on yourself to look at all experiences from the lens of self actualisation (inclusive of even potentially larger scopes if they're relevant). 12. How authentic are you internally and outwardly in your self expression and alignment between thoughts, emotions and actions? Low authenticity will predict low self awareness and high authenticity high self awareness.
