It's crazy what bystanders will ignore when exposed to a violent situation. One time I crossed paths with a man beating a woman on a bicycle trail. There were already three people standing there in shock watching, but doing nothing. I started yelling and it kind of snapped everyone out of it and got them to help stop this man. We got the police on the phone and followed the man through the forest until the police got him.

I was a ranger in the Santa Cruz area while this was happening. I understand why it took so long to catch Carpenter. It was before computers, before DNA, before cell phones, no national databases, before social media. Law enforcement wasn't able to easily share information nor put the puzzle pieces together across various state federal, and county jurisdictions. I remember the postings of David Carpenter's Sheriff's sketch on the trailheads warning hikers. Both Henry Cowell and Big Basin are vast parks in the Santa Cruz Mountains, still very rural at the time of Carpenter. I'm sure there are still bodies out there yet to be found. Edmund Kemper was doing his murders and dumping there in the same era.

I was a teen there in those years and Mt. Tam was always the best place to hike by ourselves - until we started hearing about the killer.

Sad that she risked her life and went to Bogota, Columbia, which was extremely dangerous in 1980. She came home safe only to be killed where she felt safest.

Bryan I'd just like to say you are one of the sweetest most respectful vlogers I watch. You obviously are a very empathetic loving man and you give a voice to all these poor people.

As monstrous as these killers are, I find it incredibly disconcerting and frightening that ordinary people can hear a crime being committed, knowing someone desperately needs help, and do absolutely nothing (3:16). I agree with your comments. People not getting involved? Fear of being injured, or killed? Not wanting to be a witness and inconvenienced with answering questions to law enforcement? The height of selfishness. Another approach would be to have expertise with a firearm. Just as important as hiking with enough water. A firearm would boost confidence where a person would be of some use. Save someone’s life, save the lives of future victims. Remove the threat permanently…

I don’t understand it either. You couldn’t keep me from running over to where the screaming is to intervene. I’m always with my GSD service dog and he’s huge and imposing though well mannered. He’s saved me from being accosted when he suddenly came out of the car when these 2 guys were approaching me making rude comments at night as I left work. I immediately let him back out and they both literally ran. I would never go hiking without him and a firearm or at least a knife. The guys that were golfing could have all run over or rode their cart and beat the guy with their golf clubs. There had to be at least 2, probably more like 4 or 5. Shameful. This one was particularly disturbing because all the cities mentioned are a stone’s throw from where I live.

They go out unarmed and as you posted alone. You would think they think they are just strolling in a crowded mall. Especially women. Plz don't go out alone on a hiking trail.

It wasn't just one park and for the first 15 months they weren't sure if they were all connected. They did put out warnings but unfortunately many people didn't heed them..I couldn't say in the video but this man brutally tortured most of these people before shooting or stabbing them (sometimes both) just a sadistic stick man.

One of the most beautiful places I’ve ever been.

In the late summer of 1980, as an 18 year old with a little dog as a companion, I hitchhiked from Pasadena , California up through Oregon and then west to Minnesota, where was my then home. To this day I am absolutely amazed that I survived. I could have easily been kidnapped and or killed. In fact one of the persons who gave me a ride was fleeing the Law. He turned out to be interesting and nice. My loving mother, my father had just died, grew physically ill with worry. One of the many stupid things I did as a youth.

You're one of the lucky ones as you would have had no idea who was in what vehicle. No cell phones, you were very vulnerable to most any situation, glad you survived.

I always see those isolated places as a perfect place for bad people with evil intentions to loiter. Israel Keyes comes to mind

Ikr. Its such horrible ppl, who make me think, that maybe we really do need a duty-to-intervene law, so that ppl MUST either help or at least call 911. Such callous disregard for others shouldnt exist, it shouldnt be necessary to legislate for ppl to do the very least of all - call 911. Yet it happens, again and again, tho this case is especially egregious, as they had strength in numbers, armed with golf clubs, yet they just kept playing and didnt even attempt to call for help. I know, they couldnt be held liable legally, but in my book theyre accessories, both in that murder and every murder after it, that might have been avoided, had LE been called then.

I dealt a lot with people from Newport Beach, CA in my youth. The type of people who might be golfing. I don't find it hard to believe at all.

The first time I ever went backpacking was at point Reyes national seashore, I went by myself completely alone at the entrance of the Bear Valley Trail head for my 25th birthday last year and stopped at Alamere falls which was mentioned in your video and is on the seashore. That being said, it was my very first time backpacking and completely alone, not until encountering other backpackers at the campsite, I saw a mountain lion for the very first time in my life. It was truly spectacular but incredibly terrifying knowing I was completely alone with this creature. Luckily again, the cougar did not see me which is quite uncommon and I was able to go about my way (in complete paranoia) until I reached camp. Nonetheless, these areas, although in the most abundantly populated state, it is still full of wildlife. As a California native, do not be fooled. Thank you for this video. ❤

The convicted murderer is still breathing, and his victims aren't. Something seems wrong with this situation. Prayers for the bereaved loved ones. 🙏

Growing up in the Bay Area in the ‘60s and 70s was a very scary time. It seemed like every other teenage girl was getting murdered or kidnapped. It was ridiculous. Very good story. Years ago at a football game i heard a man yelling for Help. A large black man had a middle aged man pinned against a wall and was ripping football tickets out of his hand. The guy got the tickets and started running. No one was doing anything so I took off after him, asked him to drop the tickets, he didn’t, so I took his back and choked him out till the bike cops arrived. I am no hero, I was scared, I’m just a random dude. I tell this story because I don’t understand why people could listen to a woman being assaulted and killed and not one person ran to try and help. I always assumed most people Would naturally go run to help someone but apparently not in that part of California. I hope those people Had nightmares about their choice to do nothing

Did you hear about the case of hiker Jonathan Ray Yarborough of Colorado? He fell from the summit of Mt. Ouray and was found 6 days later by helicopters that spotted his dog that had stayed with his body. He was a very experienced hiker. Such a tragedy.

I lived in this exact area when this was going on, and I had been a regular hiker on Mt. Tamalpais. With any murder, and certainly with the multiple murders of a serial killer, there are repercussions that go way beyond the immediate loved ones of the victims. I have never been able to forget the Trailside murders, and I have never been able to hike alone since then. I’m not a particularly fearful person, but between that case and the Zodiac case, I learned that there are mentally/emotionally ill people that love to prey upon vulnerable people, particularly young women. I know many other people who were impacted by this case, and changed their behavior when going out to enjoy nature.

Back then hitch hikers were easy targets for serial killers, these days I think we hear less about cases like this because these psychos now prey on the homeless population who aren't missed by society.

Never heard of so many different eye witnesses and nothing.. scary!

It's pronounced "Tam all pie us." I lived in that area when this was happening. Very fearful time as we were all still reeling from the Zodiac killer. Ed Kemper, Herbert Mullin, Charles Ng and Leonard Lake were around that time also. I was afraid to go anywhere.

In one of the photos, this guy looked like a drawing of the Zodiac Killer, from the Vallejo area. Same time frame too.

One of my favorite John Carpenter movies, The Fog, was filmed in Inverness and Point Reyes. It was released in 1979, so principal shooting was probably in 1978. After all these years, this is the FIRST time I ever heard of these murders; and even though I live in New England, one usually picks up on the goings-on in famous filming sites (for example, Carpenter loved the area so much, he bought a place there). Just an aside...hitch-hiking was not considered terribly dangerous back in the 60s and 70s. Whether across town or across the country, it was thought of as a safe mode of transportation. Better police communications and more publicized arrests of serial killers in the 80s put an end to that notion.

That took a lot to listen, it was so incredibly sad and horrific for the victims and the families to go through. It just makes you wonder, how an ordinary hike can turn into something so bad because of one person. My prayers go out to the families involved. I hope you are feeling better and stay safe.

There was a terrible case a number of years ago in which 2 hikers passed a woman on the trail. Moments later they heard her being attacked by a pack of coyotes. They phoned for help but did not intervene, and the woman was mauled to death. This is a difficult one, as I can see how a pack of coyotes would be dangerous. But it seems like some loud shouting or banging objects together or throwing stones might have interrupted the attack.

Yeah it happens when people see or hear something happening and do nothing. It's called bystander effect. Couple cases have that happened. Kitty Genovese is a more well known one.

As soon as I heard about the killer I suspected abuse, and looked him up. Yes, he was abused by his alcoholic father and his mother. Of course, that does not justify any of his crimes but it does show how damaging child abuse is, and how far-reaching the repercussions can be.

@@prioris55555 It's not absurd at all. You can be born a sociopath, but not all sociopaths turn into serial killers. However, if a born sociopath is brutalized in childhood instead of being nurtured, the outcome will likely be worse. I heard it explained like this: if you are born with the gene that determines above average height, and in childhood you have a healthy diet and exercise, you will most likely be tall. But if you have the tall gene and you grow up malnourished and in poverty, you are less likely to be tall.

@@fulanichild3138 there are countless kids who grow up in brutal environments who don't become serial killers. there are many serial killers who grow up in good families. vast majority of serial killers kill for profit and greed. most of the population has strong sociopath tendencies. see miligram experiments. see nazi germany. see putin and stalin in russia. see ronald reagan and his past history.

Carpenter was on a ship with my father. He kept asking him to come to his quarters to have a beer! Close call. I remember the fear of him visiting Mt. Tam.

In that period of time there were hitchhikers all over the country. There were thousands of runaways that were victims of human trafficking but LEO's were not recognizing trafficking. This man had what sounds like bipolar disorder that was never addressed. My condolences to all the victims families, serial killers like him will always be around and LE has always been slow to react. He will likely die in prison but that won't bring any victims back.

Don't depend on electronics , there nice but fragile) Knife and mini leather man Matches and lighter( other fire starting tools and material ) Head lamp & flash light Extra batteries Water purification Storm whistle Mini flare stick Good Med kit ( with quick clot trauma pack Meds ,antihistamine, pain Meds etc ) Two way radio (with extra batteries) Emergency food for 3 days (bars etc it doesn't have to be tasty just have calories ) Emergency blanket /silk bag liner Bush kit ( snare wires , fish line and hooks , list of local edible plants ,flint and Steele, magnifying lens etc etc) Cell phone ( fully charged and turned off to conserve batteries) Self defense items ( pepper spray , baton , large knife , hand gun ) Binoculars or monocular Rain cover for pack ( if pack is not rain proof) I consider these the basics that I always carry in the back country even on short day hikes. You hopefully won’t need most of this , but better a little extra weight than dead.

The justice system light sentence, prosecutor and prison system that paroled him played a major role as accessories to these murders. Lot of people in the system were his accessories to his murder. ---- In 1960, Carpenter befriended a woman and lured her into the woods in Presidio, where he bound her with a clothesline, beat her with a hammer and stabbed her in the hand. Luckily, a military patrol officer caught him in the act. Carpenter fired at him with a gun, but missed and was injured by return fire and arrested. The next year, Carpenter was sentenced to a total of 14 years in prison for one count of assault with intent to commit murder and two counts of assault with a deadly weapon. While he was serving his sentence, his wife divorced him and he was found by the prison psychiatrists to have sociopathic personality disorder and an IQ of 125. He was released after serving only nine years and quickly remarried, though his second marriage also failed. From the end of January until the beginning of February, he committed a series of attacks against women. On January 27 all in one day, he forced a woman out of her car by hitting it with his own and tried to rape her. Though he stabbed her, she got away and was able to remember his license plate number. He then broke into another woman's home, kidnapped her, raped her and stole her car. On February 3, he stole a woman's car and then raped another woman. Her infant child was present during the attack and was treated well by Carpenter, who was arrested the same day. While awaiting trial, he tried to escape along with four other inmates, but was caught quickly. He made a plea bargain and was convicted of robbery and kidnapping. Not long after he was paroled to a federal halfway house in May of 1979, he is believed to have escalated to murder. While he was committing murders, Carpenter took courses in computer printing at the California Trade School. After getting his degree, he got a job as a typesetter instructor.

People who hear and do nothing are as blood guilty as the person doing the crime.What separates the good from the bad is our desire to do what is right and act on it. If you don't, then you have aligned yourself with the bad guys. In point of fact have helped them in their crime. Imo

You know what's funny? My last name is pronounced the way Bryan pronounced it, but most of my life people have pronounced it the correct way it is pronounced for the county.

The lake shown at the 2:40 timestamp is Lake Tenaya in Yosemite National Park, 200 miles away from Point Reyes. Was there a hiker murdered there by the same guy?

My former sister in law went there many times she lives in Dan Fran even took my kids and ex there to Point Reyes.

Experience is great but can also be a danger if a person takes extra risks because they are experienced. All must understand in the back country you are trafficking with superior forces.
