I didn’t know thick polish was that much of an issue, nor that oil actually plasticizes nail polish!

Your channel is so informative. It's not common to come across a nail technician who practice centers healthy nails as opposed to aesthetic.

Solution to all my nail polish issues were daily hot oil soaks. Hardeners and conditioning treatments only made problem worse. Just brushing oil on is not enough for me. I abuse my hands at work (gloves and timed 1 min, hot water hand washes every 30 min without ability to use any oil or moisturiser after per company procedure). On top of that I have thin, bendy nails and sweaty hands. I use mix of olive and jojoba oil with a few drops of essential oils for fragrance. I heat it up in microwave and keep my nails in it until it gets cold. I just put some video on and sit there for 15-20 minutes with hands in a bowl. It is a commitment but for me it is worth it to have beautiful nails.

That is amazing to hear! Yes for sure hot oil soaks would be very benefiting!! Sadly for majority of people that is way too much work. Like you said, hardeners are not for everyone, you have to listen to your body and see what works for you. I'm glad you found a solution!!

Saying that conditioners and hardener makes problem worse it's absolute nonsense. Oil soaks did nothing for my nails but using good hardnerer made my nails the healthiest they ever been

Watching you try to make a mistake with the polish and it still looks better than any nail I’ve ever painted…

What surprised me the most was damaged nails. I actually thought maybe because the damaged area was more porous (like sandpapered) and that would make it “stick” better. I learned a few things and grateful for that! Thank you 🌸

1) I don't have a problem mixing and matching products, but I do think that most people don't understand that one of the top things that will reduce chipping is base coat base coat base coat. Base coat actually has more to do with polish staying on the nail (not chipping) than top coat, so it's vitally important to use the best ones you can. If you have a bad base coat, the polish will not adhere as well as it should. Also, if a base coat is bad, then applying a same-brand polish to it isn't going to help a manicure last any better than using the same polish over a high-quality base coat like, say, Orly Bonder. 2) The cuticle oil after hand-washing is also good for preventing hangnails. I have a real problem with hangnails because my nail shape pushes at that upper corner on each side where the nail bed ends, and that creates calluses or dried corners. Hangnails are never far behind from that, so I have to use lots of moisturizing there. I've also found that having oval shaped nails, rather than square, also helps reduce this problem. Lotion with jojoba/vitamin E will also work if you don't want to bother with cuticle oil. The moisturizing is the point, not the method of delivery. 3) I think the other thing left out here with nail chips is not being mindful of the fragility of nails.Too many people take them for granted and forget to be careful with things like car doors, pull handles of all kinds, soda cans, pushing buttons, and so forth. For instance, I've learned to push elevator buttons with a knuckle instead of a finger. The new habit not only protects my nails better but is also more sanitary. I also tell myself when I go to the car--be careful opening the door. Be careful putting keys in the ignition. And in the name of all things that are holy, be careful with that stupid trunk. 4) A tip for people like me, who do a ton of typing every single day with long nails: PUT ON A FRESH LAYER OF TOP COAT EVERY MORNING, and cap the ends with it. This will keep the polish from chipping from the wear and tear of typing. 5) My final tip is one that most people can't do, but works really well: Change your nail color more often. I rarely go more than 3 days with the same color. This has significantly reduced my chipping problem!

You must have long nails, if typing and pushing a button is a risk. I keep mine short. I will say that being more careful has helped a lot. I started washing dishes with gloves so my hands aren't soaking in soap and water. Started using a tool to open a can of pop and being more conscious of situations where I can feel my nails bumping something. So far I'm on day 5 with no chipping, but again, you must have long nails if 3 days is max for you. That sounds very time consuming, so 1x per week change is the most I'd be willing to commit to. I did add an extra layer of top coat yesterday (day 4) and I think that helped and dried quickly. Good tips, I just don't think they are all universal, short nails have slightly less care needs.

My nail is quite soft so it's petty easy to chip at the corner of square shaped nail…so I usually make it round or squoval…

Some of the points you made are often overlooked, or barely even mentioned at all. I used to be guilty of many mistakes in the past years, especially applying thick coats, but I have learned better. I now always wear gloves when washing the dishes, and apply oil on my nails every day. Great video!

This last self done manicure was my most successful one ever thanks to your tips. I did see some cracking near the middle of the week but no chipping. I have pretty bendy nails on several of my fingers, and that's where the cracks formed was a long those lines. I put another top coat on yesterday and the cracks seem to have disappeared. I do think I should try a hardener because I've never been able to grow my nails very long they chip and break easily. But I'm pleasantly surprised at how smoothly everything has gone, form prep to application to wear and tear. I might be doing this frequently so I can have pretty colors to look at. It also helps me stop picking at my nails since they look different and pretty and it causes me to slow down and think before I start picking and chewing.

Thank you. What about a shower when you need to wash your hair wich takes time. There is noy way around it. And it is saving legs ect and the the rough scrubing the sculp several times woth a regular hot water (not to hot)?

VERY informative video. I did not know about the reason for using the cuticle oil (to plastize the polish). Will be trying that. Also, in my experience, I always use the same base and top coat with different brands of polish and don’t have a problem with chipping. And with nail polish thinner, I’ve used OPI’s for years on all brands of polish and down to the last drops of polish in the bottle and have not found that it deteriorates the quality of that polish. These are just my experiences though.

Yes for sure, you might have a good experience but it might not work for all people and all combos. I know for sure that OPI thinner would not work with DD. Some people just have good nails and anything sticks to them. Same goes with gel polish or gel. Others are not so lucky and we have to troubleshoot where the problem lies. It's like when people say "my grandfather drank and smoked all this life and was healthy as and died of old age at 98". It doesn't mean smoking is OK ;). I also smoked for 20 years and I never got cancer but I don't recommend it :)))

Great tips! I totally agree with all 11, but with some remarks: Using same brand base-, color- and top coat is certainly a good idea, but most brands can be mixed without any problem and especialy the base coat of a particular brand might stick better to your nails, so even if it does not stick as good to the other brands color polish it still can reduce peeling. In the same way some brands of top coat might be more resistant to chipping since they stay more flexible and so are more bumping resistant. With capping the free edge of the nails my experience is that capping with ONLY base- and top coat gives the least chipping, and if you really want to cap with the color just cap the first color coat too (as thin as possible!). And with verry long nails also cap a tiny edge of the back of the nail with just base and top coat. Regarding thinning of the polish: Do not wait too long with thinning! just a single drop of thinner every time the polish starts thickening works better/longer than adding multiple drops to a really thickened polish. (And beware that the used thinner is really the correct thinner for the polish! Some shops sell acetone as thinner which is not suitable to thin most polishes!)

Such good points! I agree about capping. I spoke to cosmetic chemist who develops these products and he advised against thinning in general. He said that you cannot achieve the same quality after the thinning because solvents evaporate at a different rate. When it comes to Dazzle Dry which I use the most on my clients and this brand has to be thinned like you said it better yo add a drop of 2 after each use then wait until the polish is thick and try to thin it. Very good point!!

Hi Rayleen! It really depends. Some type of polishes don't require a base coat (like CND Vinylux or Essie Gel Couture and some others) and they are made that way. They are great for people wanting to do an occasional quick, easy and faster drying manicure. These base free polishes are awesome for that. BUT for people who get manicures on a regular bases or people with more porous nails I recommend base coat first. Actually as I'm typing this, I should do a quick video about that :)

I personally think capping base and top coat is the way to go, color is optional, as long as you apply it thinly. Otherwise, you may end up with a thick free edge. Someone once suggested that you cap the free edge before applying to the nail plate, to prevent that weird slight bump at the tip of the nail, and I agree it very much prevents that

❤️ tips prevent chips. I love wiping all my bottles with acetone to get the old polish off game changer. Do you have a video on fast coats shrinking at cuticle or tips?

I had never seen wrapping at the end of the nail before. I am in the water for at least an hour 3 days a week so I must start applying nail oil to my nails after I am dry & dressed. Great info! Thanks 😊

Do warm oil soaks between polishing. The oil will absorb into the nail further and it will protect it from the water to a degree.

The problem often is not the "strength" of the product but chipping often can be a bond issue. Damaged nails don't bond well. So the product on top can be strong but not bonded well. Adding strength to the product is not always a good solution. Adding "health" to the nails is a better idea (meaning, really taking care of the nails). Damaged nails get often even more damaged with polish (with an exception of 1 clear coat of polish, in my experience)

Can you suggest a good hardener? And do I use it in place of my basecoat? Thanks!

I would say after they are decently dry. It can depend on many factors, such as how thick the coats are, how many coats, how long you let them dry between coats, formulas, etc. Usually 30 minutes after top coat, my nails are dry enough to do most things that don't involve smacking them into things, and you could probably apply the oil and gently massage it in by that point.

Please, have you already published video about treatment of damaged nails? I can't find it and I really need it. My nail are completely damaged after a few weeks of polishing 😭 thank you!

Hello--I'm new to this channel (and I've subscribed already!), so I haven't seen all your videos yet. I'm hoping you have one that talks about why my top coat always disolves the nail polish and leaves the free edge of my nail without any polish. It doesn't matter what brand (Zoya, OPI, Sally Hansen, Essie), how long I wait to put the top coat on (sometimes 24 hours), or how old the polish or top coat is. This is for laquer, btw, *not* gel. Why does it happen, and what can I do about it? I have been searching everywhere for an answer to this and just can't find one. I'd appreciate it so much if you could point me in the right direction!

When is it safe to take a bath or shower after finishing your nails? Also what causes the white marks on nails? Hi Flora! I think it would be ok to take a bath or shower when the nail polish is dry but no matter how dry it is, getting the nails absorbing too much water is not a good idea. The white spots- ugh- that is my challenge and nemesis. I've been racking my brain about this for years. I wrote about this here: www.polished.ca/white-spots/ This was happening a lot to my clients toenails. Since switching exclusively to Dazzle Dry on toes, the problem almost totally went away with the exception of 2 clients and their nails look much better than before. Here are some amazing pictures comparing DD to other polishes www.patreon.com/posts/pedicure-study-1-24347099 www.patreon.com/TheSalonLife/posts?filters%5Btag%5D=WHITE%20SPOTS Bottom line: some people's nails are more prone to developing them than others. Possible people with weaker bonds between the layers of the nails. All coating can contribute to creating them but with DD it happens very rarely. People who are prone might try to take breaks from polish for few days between polishing. The surface tends to "rebalance" itself after 2-3 days of break. Nails don't breathe, so it's not the oxygen but I think the surface of the nail gets a little sealed with the use of oil or oil gets transferred from our skin to the surface of the nails. Then the moisture tends to build up in the nail again hiding these little pockets or air (the white spots are like little empty nail pockets). I recommend using Dazzle Dry "Mend" or CND Rescue RXx. These products seem to reinforce the surface of the nail plate a bit. Not a miracle but it helps. So the breaks in polish wear are meant to shorten the amount of time the nail has a coating on.

Yes, I was talking about the regular polish here. Oil can plasticize the coating (nail polish) and keep it flexible. So it’s not only for the nails but also for the polish. Keeping the nails strong and healthy is one of the best things you can do to prevent the polish from chipping.

Concerning using hand sanitizer: There are special "sanitizer resistant" top coats (essence has a cheap one). These help a lot if applied over the regular top coat and re-applied every few days if needed (depends on how often and which hand sanitizer is used)

@@KandyKaneNails I strongly advise against quick dry drops.! They dry the polish top-down, making the top dry quickly, but resulting in a longer time to fully dry upto the base. For a long lasting manicure it should dry bottom-up and patience is the key. Use thin layers and let every layer (almost) fully dry naturally before applying the next (a slow cold air flow helps, you can use a small fan or just wave your hands slowly.) Also you best do not apply oil to the nails until the polish is fully dry. (Hint: A fully dry nail polish doesn't smell like nailpolish anymore.)

@@pgScorpio this doesnt apply to everyone. I use drops on almost dry nails and it works fantastically. Applying thin coats of polish is key I have my best at home manicure applying thin Coats of polish. I make sure I allow the first coat (applied very thin I see some streaks) to completely dry

I almost always do my nails shortly after taking a shower, like 10-15 minutes after usually. Not sure if my nails would be dry enough by then, even when I dehydrate them with acetone or some alcohol. But I dont tend to get chipping problems unless work demands I abuse them more than usual, or otherwise damage the polish significantly by accident.

I would say once a week. I recommend polish for few days (like 5 or 6 max) then take it off and use treatment like Mavala if needed and oil for a day or 2.

If nails got wet for more than 60 sec., how long does it take to dry (before using nail polish)?

I would say wait about an hour if they are wet. I wouldn’t t worry if you were washing your hands for 60 seconds but if you did dishes or took a bath etc then I would wait for sure

I understand that you need to use a base and top coat from the same brand, but what about nail polish? Should you use one brand for everything?

Not as important because the same air will dry it :) With UV cured gels the lamps need to match the gel. I still recommend usually using 1 brand because they tested the products together.

I always have to wait around an hour for my nails to dry between coats. I follow all these tips and still have to wait an hour for them to try

Even when doing everything right regular polish still takes at least an hour to dry and up to 24 hours to dry fully. Except for Dazzle Dry system. It dries fully in 5 min.

Hello, I really like your channel. In my experience Essie Gel Cotoure top coat is the best top coat, I use it over everything, no matter what brand of polish, I even use it under matte top coat. My manicure is good to go for at least 10 days

@@TheSalonLife before the Gel Coutoure top coat I would often wake up with bedsheet marks on my nails, because I use a lot of indie polish and not all of them are great quality. The Gel Couture coat simply makes any brand great IMO

@@TheSalonLife I have never even heard of it, is it for sale in Europe? Shipping from the US has become a costly affair. I'm not really looking for nail polish to stay on for as long as possible, it's not really important. I can keep my polish on fairly long now, but the truth is I usually itch to change my nail polish after around 5 days. I understand it's a selling point for many creators, but I don't really know that many nail polish addicts who really cares

And to think I usually polish my nails AFTER my bath thinking I was locking in the moisture!!?

eyeopener: not soaking hands/nails before manicure!!!
