    I wanted to pin something here because of the dozens of disrespectful comments I have had on this video. I have gotten the same comment about 50 times insinuating that I got drunk and made this video. This is offensive because I do not drink nor have I been drunk in my 40 years of life. This is WHY I look young, because I do not drink, smoke or do drugs, so those of you that treat your bodies and minds like trash and come on here to disrespect out of jealously, do it elsewhere as this is a video about specific topics, and none of them include alcohol. And for those of you that think I am "drunk", please do not take up the profession of bartender or police officer because you really are pretty stupid to not be able to tell the difference between sarcastic vocal tones and drunkenness. Anyone who says something about me being drunk will be blocked from commenting on my channel, period.

    Revolvers tend to be "Keep Sakes" more often than auto loaders. The Beretta is not really a fixed barrel (From my understanding), because it moves backwards slightly. But a Hi-Point and Makarov is. If you run out of ammo, you can always use the revolver as a club. Try that with a Polymer pistol! (lol). I think there is something MUCH more terrifying about staring down the barrel of a 44 mag than a 9mm Glock. I have been held at gunpoint twice (By Glocks) and it was NO FUN! But I THINK it would have been more impressive with a big bore. If your going to carry something that you MAY die with, you might as well go out with class. Warm wood and cold steel, Not aluminum and plastic. From "Enter the Dragon": “- Han: We are all ready to win, just as we are born knowing only life. It is defeat that you must learn to prepare for. - Williams: I don't waste my time with it. When it comes, I won't even notice. - Han: Oh? How so? - Williams: I'll be too busy looking good.”

With a revolver you just pick it up and pull the trigger. It's always ready to instantly fire. In an emergency simplicity is a virtue.

    @NoseKey if you fired 6 shots and haven't produced a "new to you gun" to continue the fight with then statistically you're going to be leaking badly and needing to get off the X because the fights over and you lost. 3 Yards 3 Seconds 3 Rounds. That said 1 gun is none, 2 is 1 and 3 is better.

  • @MinuteBracelet

    @MinuteBracelet

    4 жыл бұрын

    @NoseKey I guess it's just another tradeoff to be considered then. In a situation where my accuracy is compromised, the threat will probably be very close so I have confidence that I can still get hits on whatever is assailing me. Aside from that my reason for choosing a revolver for defense is that it's a small gun that is simple and safe to operate, plus I have a pretty small wrist and I tend to have limpwrist cycling failures with subcompact autoloaders (and even some full size in .45) despite shooting under relaxed range conditions. I'm a skinny guy, so for me my carry would probably be a single stack autoloader that only has 6 rounds anyways. 20 round glocks are also not an option for me (California) and 10 shots over 6 is a diminishing return. I would like to try a glock 43 some day if I could find one, but those are relatively rare and I would probably have the same issues with it that I do with the M&P Shield.

    I carry an extra mag to fix problems not for extra ammo. Just like I carry a SW 686 along with my G19, one will fix the others problems by replacing it. I'd also never draw either one without being fully intent on completely emptying it. New York City officers fired an average of 5.8rds per engagement with the S&Ws and for the only 2 years that they compiled this data after the G17 was issued the round count averaged 16.7 rds per engagement. That means they shot um till they were empty regardless of compacity.

    I personally prefer a revolver over a pistol for the following reasons :- I shoot them more accurately, in either single or double action. I like them more as they're easier to manipulate. Once you have your revolver, a holster and a couple of speed loaders there isn't really a lot of mods needed or wanted. I used to own FN Hi-power, needed 6 mags, had a trigger job done, removed the magazine safety so that the trigger was smoother, try explaining that to a court. I owned a Gen 3 Glock 17, not even going to go into the trigger on that, then there was the plethora of magazines, +2 extensions 33 rounders and and and and. I owned a Sig P220 in .45acp needed a lot of magazines, and a .22lr conversion kit with even more magazines... I have had two Smith and Wesson model 586's, one in 4" and one in 6", a Colt Python and a Colt DS2. Same old story only needed a couple of speed loaders a holster and ammo for them. The only Handgun I currently own is a Smith and Wesson Model 66-1 4", all I have done to that revolver since I got it was changed the grip (Personal preference, Hogue monogrip) bought a holster (Fobus paddle) and some speed loaders ( Speed strips and two Safariland comp 2's) Snap caps and ammo, DONE! It was imported into Germany in 1979 as all firearms have to be proof shot before they can be sold here and that is the year stamped next to the markings. I got it from the original owners family after he'd passed, with the revolver I got the ammo that they/he had for it one full box of .38sp wadcutters, one box of .38sp lead round nose minus "1" round and a box of CCI Shotshells that had never been opened until I checked to see if they're still good, and a leather belt holster... I believe that in all the years he owned this revolver he only ever fired one round out of it to dispatch a deer... That revolver will out live me, and all I did was give it a clean and some never dull to make it shine again... I'm now looking at getting another revolver in .357 magnum it'll probably be a S&W model 60-9 2 1/8" barrel, already found and am in the process of getting a deal on it, the speed strips and ammo I already own will work in that too... None of that new pistol, new caliber needs new magazines, new mag carriers etc etc... I done all the IPSC etc in the past, damn at 54 I can still remember the introduction of the Glocks with their polymer frames and all the controversy that sparked, all that,. They don't have a chance in this world, that plastic won't last, and whatever, and today, every man and his dog is producing a polymer framed pistol and even revolvers.. So end of "MY" personal opinion about "MY" choices, hope everyone has a great weekend and that they come up with a real answer to this Covid BS before we all end up in a world of hurt...

    One factor you failed to list is not about which one of the two is "the better type", but rather which one can be used more dependably by an average user (average training & experience) in a stress situation. My 26 years of carrying a revolver as my duty weapon has convinced me beyond any doubt that the odds of surviving a stress situation (deadly confrontation) are much higher when your weapon is the least complex in its basic function and mechanics. It's a bit like having to choose betw. a balisong knife and a ball-peen hammer when confronted by a big bad guy with ham-sized fists. Get my point? Even in the most tunnel-vision circumstance of a sudden stress situation (see: above) all I had to remember about my sidearm was, "Draw it, aim it, squeeze the trigger - keep squeezing until the threat is eliminated." I don't need to freeze with indecision, trying to remember, "Is my safety off? Do I have a round in the chamber? What happens if my first round jams - will I remember my training and rack the slide to clear the jammed round and chamber a fresh one? e.t.c." - those are the more than likely debilitating thoughts that will fly thru the mind of an _average_ gun owner who has to use his semi-auto pistol in a high stress situation. Yes, the likely rejoinder is: "Train more with your weapon of choice." Yeah? Tell that to any and every cop who ever got into a shoot-out with a bad guy/bad guys, who would fire every round from his high capacity semi-auto duty pistol, hit his target once or twice - and still call for backup. _Average_ gun owners who own guns for self-defense outnumber well trained cops (a very charitable assumption) by a ratio of 1000 to 1 - and for the average civilian gun owner a better handgun for self-defense is a revolver.

  • @jackster58
    @jackster585 жыл бұрын

    Finally, a person who gets it. I agree with all of your comments and I would have a couple to add. If you limp wrist a plastic gun, it will jam nearly every time, revolvers are not depending on a rigid grip to function. Another, the magazine is the weak link in a simi auto, if it gets lost or damaged, the gun is useless. The reason the police and military prefer autoloaders is capacity and cost, those plastic guns are cheap to manufacture and they feel cheap when you pick them up. That S&W 686 is a beautiful piece of workmanship that looks as good as if feels in the hand...

Also small autos jam up pretty easily. I do have a Ruger Security 9 that's loose tolerance, steel mags and small mag release and have never had any issues while training. Revolvers though, I never had any issues with them, the only hangup is during reloading, easy to drop rounds when simulating increased stress.

    I have put Tens of Thousands of rounds thru both semi autos and revolvers. I have had several malfunctions on the semi autos and only one jam with a revolver. My S&W Model 14 jammed when shooting PPC matches. I had gone thru several 60 round courses of fire and had a jam caused by a flake of powder under the extractor star. Flicked out the flake with a toothpick and kept shooting the rest of the day. Never would have believed that could happen. A single flake of Unique from my reloads. Needless to say I changed my powder and never another problem. Have well over 20,000 rounds thru that revolver.

    All good points! I've been trying to remind people that not everyone is a gun enthusiast who wants to invest the time into shooting thousands of rounds or learning how to rapidly execute corrective action when the auto malfunctions. Granted, modern autos with modern ammo tend to be very reliable, but the bottom line is, in every "primary" category they are less reliable than a revolver, and thus the better choice for the non-gun-enthusiast is the revo. I more often than not carry a J-frame in my front pocket because it's EASY and chances are I won't need ANY gun, and from there, the "probabilities" start playing out....if I do need to reach for the gun, chances are that move alone with discourage an attacker. If I do have to DRAW the gun, that move will cause the attacker to break contact. If I do have to SHOOT, that person will likely be immediately incapacitated, and if not, will be trying desperately to escape, not continue the attack. If I do have to shoot one and there are TWO, when attacker two hears the pop of a gun, and sees number one react and go down are start trying to duck and dodge, he (or she) will also bolt - because that is normal human response to a sudden attack that puts THEM on the defensive. The odds that during the normal course of my daily activities that I will end up facing off with 3-5 or more assailants is VERY small, and if such a scenario happens, all the "odds" above are still valid. NOBODY in their right mind wants to be shot, and it would be the exception that anyone would lunge toward someone with a gun pointed in their direction. Even now there is a considerable "body" of actual shooting videos that provide anyone actually seeking knowledge to study and understand how things most often play out. One thing is for sure, the FIRST SHOT out is most important. When the bad guys THINK they are in control and suddenly hear the pop of a handgun at close range, the momentum instantly shifts to the person who took the shot(s). In every real life video shooting, if the bad guy takes a solid hit, he STOPS what he is doing and either goes down, or tries to flee, and often ends up not very far outside. This equates to a "one shot stop" since the shot stopped further aggression.

    You missed a couple good points Sam that also makes the revolver a much better platform, the very ammo you carry for it is way more durable than the ammo you carry for an auto, by it's nature the ammo for most every auto pistol caliber is more delicate because it is made to headspace on the case mouth, so putting a nice heavy crimp on the bullet to help retain it in the case mouth is out because it can create a dangerous lack of possitive headspace that can lead to dangerous over pressure conditions, it's because of this and the fact that an auto by nature is much more abbusive to the ammo running through it that bullet set back can happen because of the bullet nose being slammed into the feed ramp and lacking a nice firm crimp that as the action slams closed that bullet setback can occure, this can also happen if ammo is rough handled outside the firearm also, and the lack of firm crimp can also make it more prone to eviromental intrussion (I.E. water tight seal ain't as good),this just ain't an issue with a good old strait walled rimmed revolver designed cartridge, first because it headspaces on the cartridge rim you can put a monsterous heavy crimp on the bullet to the point of actually distorting the bullet and if anything it only makes ignition and burn more consistant (and water tight)albeit the distorting of the bullet from such a heavy crimp may hurt accuracy a bit but I'm talking REALLY getting carried away on overcrimping, this is also why case overall length is way less critical than an auto leading to the revolver round being WAY more forgiving about case length when reloading and being the reloaders dream of ease, and also giving the revolver the ability to fire differing calibers (like 38special/357 magnum)with narry a thought about it, also the revolver can shoot any shape/profile bullet with no concern to it feeding properly (if it fits into the cylinder chambers it will fire it just fine), not with an auto try to shoot someting like a lead wadcutter or semiwadcutter in an auto and watch what happens, a revolver can also shoot any power level ammo that will fit the chambers----in other words you can down load a 44magnum or 357 magnum using light for caliber bullets (as low as 90 grains in the 357) with powder charges so low it will barelly push the bullet out of the barrel giving it the ability to take even small game (for survival food if need be) with a caliber that would otherwise not be suitable because of excessive power not leaving any edible part available, this ability also means that a beginner of less than muscular stature can shoot something like even a 44 magnum without suffering any ills, then there is also the ability to shoot things like birdshot rounds for things like snakes and small rodent varmints, and all this with not a care in the world about will it feed because if it fits the chamber it will fire with no issue one right after the other with just another squeze of the trigger, the revolver chambered in 357 or 44 magnum are pretty much the only gun that you can leave home in the morning with just it and a box of mixed ammo and be able to take on any shooting task ranging from mice to large four legged assailents with nothing more than an ammo change as simple as dumping the six currently loaded and loading the necessary rounds for the task at hand (all done quicker by the way than you can remove and reload an auto's magazine with different rounds), and with a revolver you'll never miss-place your mags as another little side bennifit, all these bennifits far outweigh the EXTREEMLY rare case where having more than six shots may occur.

I realized this was extremely dangerous after the fact if one of those rounds had gone off in the chamber not aligned with the barrel it would have been all over! Interesting video. I agree with most of your points. The overwhelming points in favor of revolvers are simplicity of use and reliability. Semis require regular practice just to stay familiar with mechanical operation. Not so the revolver. In addition, as you said, reliability of use. Almost impossible to get a quality revolver with quality ammo to not go bang when necessary. Currently I am favoriting my j frame revolver for self defense. Plenty of shots, easy to use, and very accurate for any realistic threat. Like you, I own several semis in addition and enjoy using them. But a revolver meets all my potential needs and provides a good degree of confidence because I know it will work.

On a fast moving predator you'll get 3 maybe 4 shots if you're fast before it's on you eating your eyeballs. Less things can go wrong with a revolver. No magazine issues, No did I rack the gun? No FTF or FTE, Before you go out test the revolver lines up and locks up tight and you're good as gold. Unless you want a bear using your eyeballs as gum drops.

    I absolutely agree with you. Been an ex police officer in the seventies and caring S/W Model10, noticed that our guys were by far better shooters than the 45 guys. Surely, 45 cal. is a hell of a beast stopper but “if you can hit the target with it.” The Female officers or the average inexperienced shooters, simply couldn’t shoot with it, effectively !! Simply, the Model10 was by far more reliable and easier to use. Presently, with a more powerful Amos, the 38s are as effective as 45s. I carry a Costume made Model 19 and I challenge anyone in a combat shooting contest, with no problem. I have shot an attacking coyote dead with one round 357 Mag. about 10 to 15 feet. Try the scenario with a full clip of 9 mm or 45. Yes sir, As a experience shooter, you are 100% right. Thank you for a very informative clip. I am a follower. Cheers 🍺🍻

When the last mag got to the last round it didn't eject, but did lock open. i cocked it, went into the house to my bench, and found I could not rack the slide to save my life( literally maybe) I could move the slide about 1/8 in or less and it would not go another thousandth. I could see a shell casing in the chamber. Hmmm. anyway after about 25 minutes of trying to get the casing out I finally succeeded, and the casing was bulged out. Boy am I glad I was not in a fire fight. Back to retirement for the 9mm. back to my Taurus 605 for edc. Autos, for the most part, (broom handle pistols being an obvious exception), have the magazine in the handle so it is first ammo storage and only secondly a grip which leaves you holding on to a box. A revolver is better if your have to feed yourself on game as well.

    The advantage on reloading (loss of brass issue) depends on the particular semi-automatic pistol you are using. I had the ejection port on my 1911 enlarged, and rather than the brass comeing out and flying all over the place (like it used to do) it now drops all the brass into about a 2 foot area. I lose maybe one casing per 200 shots. On my other semi-automatics which have not been worked on, I agree with you on the reloading issue.

    This old warrior agrees with you 100%. My first EDC piece was a Colt Detective 38 short barrel with walnut grips. Changed that to a nickel S&W 5-shot 38 Chief's Special around '82 or '83 (can't remember the year for certain). It was the same model that my favorite old chief always carried on his belt at 3 o'clock under his suit jacket. Once when he was wearing a tuxedo at an official function he opened his jacket to show me that gun stuck in his cummerbund at 3 o'clock (always on duty). I got a chuckle at that but I wasn't chuckling about 15 minutes later when his pager went off and he bolted for the door. I still carry a nickel 5-shot 38 S&W Chief's Special every day (although it's not the same gun that I had in the 80's). Gotta love these old guns!

    The S&W 686 with 4" barrel is my dream revolver. It's what I qualified with as a corrections officer. The state provided the guns, and it was our sidearm when working the towers over the yard. I was dead nuts accurate with that gun. It was my first time shooting a revolver, and I shot it way better than the Colt .45 we used in the Navy Seabees. I hear the state has since switched up to using polymer pistols. What a shame. We also had a .223 bolt rifle and a 12 gauge pump in the tower. Actually, when we had tower duty, we had to carry all three guns and all of our ammo to the tower. We had to walk around the building and prison yard on the outside of the wire. The rifle and shotgun were not loaded until we were settled in the tower. The .357 revolver was loaded and in the holster, to make sure we got to the tower safely with everything else.

People claim the new 2 piece barrel revolvers like the new 66 and 69 Combat Magnums can be more accurate with the 2 piece being under tension, but I have not found that to be the case yet. The 686 is great and seems to have a smoother trigger and rotation than other models. That's just my experience.

    If I may add. With a 3" inch barrel the round in a revolver travels all three inches after leaving the cartridge. In a semi automatic the round is inside the barrel usually one third of the way. So the round only travels two thirds after it leaves the cartridge.

    I personally prefer semi autos because I like the triggers better than revolver triggers, I like the capacity, I like that I can reload faster and the semi auto feels better in my hands when shooting it. I like revolvers as well but just prefer semi autos. I do like that I can carry 357 magnum in a snubby though, a powerful round in a easily concealed gun and it’s very light. They each have their advantage and both come in handy.

    Yeah, there is the method of using the rear sight on the slide against something solid and pressing forward firmly, as magnus pym was describing. I am not trying to sway anyone here. I just know there are disadvantages to both where reloading is concerned. Watching someone reload a revolver is painfully slow. I only consider carrying a revolver still practical due to the unlikelihood one will have to reload at all. Since it is unlikely a civilian will need more than 5 or 6 rounds in any SD situation I feel that the reloading issue isn't nearly as relevant as other matters like how well you can shoot it and how safely you can carry and use it. Many people don't even carry a spare mag or speed loader on them most of the time, because it's just not that convenient. If you know you are unlikely to even have a reload that's one less issue to enter into the debate. Your point may be valid though depending on ones level of proficiency with whichever method of reloading that gun you use. I don't have much experience with revolvers and when I imagine doing that one handed, I can tell you I think I may have better luck with the auto. I'm pretty sure I would be faster at that, but that's just me.

    My NAA .22 Mag revolver jammed after a year of pocket (hosterless) carry. Fortunately it wasn’t in a time of need. I carry it in a pocket holster now and haven’t had that problem since. Also, I bought a .22 conversion kit for my 92FS (it works great), so semi auto pistols can swap calibers quite easily. I hear the Glocks can be swapped around too.

    Own many guns. Semi auto pistols, and revolvers balanced in numbers. Have only had one revolver lock up on me, and that was Colt Lawman dry fired one time too many. Forced the firing block so far forward it locked up first shot. Corrected the problem with red lok tite. Never again. LOL have never experienced that one issue with various J-frames or the Colt Python, but shit does happen! LOL That said, in regard to semi autos I've had so many FTF, FTE, I couldn't count them. Granted, most ha e been ammunition related, untiil you can find that next to perfect ammunition your gun likes to feed, but with a revolver that's not an issue that IS the issue with semi autos. Case closed. LOL

    I like any weapon that is effective and that I can honestly pick up and use effectively and efficiently, and there are different weapons and calibers for different situations. So in short I like both equally. The only ones I don't like are ones that either aren't effective or that I can't use effectively, for example the NAA mini revolvers are a bit unwieldy due to a lack of grip and harder to reload. Some semiautos are just too unreliable and unwieldy ie. the desert eagle. The desert eagle is too bulky for me to carry practically unless I'm using some sort of pouch or satchel. So if I ever need alot of punch out of a handgun, I usually use the revolvers, but if I need alot of capacity, I go with the semi-autos.

    Nice gun. I'm going to get another 44 as I haven't had one in 7 years. Going with a 4" though as I like to do comparison videos, and 4" is spot on for .44 Special vs .45 ACP in my Glock 41 5.3" as bullet nose to muzzle is 4.1" in that, same as a 4" revolver. Also have the same 5.3" barrel in a 10mm conversion for 10mm vs .44 mag.

    until you held down by gun fire by one guy and another walk around the back and shoots you in the head. most autos can shoot 2 and half rounds for every one in a revolver. it works its how wars are fought. fire a lot of rounds so your enemy cant move or shoot back . id like to see all you revolver guys go up against some auto guys see how many come back. dont think it will be many. i understand you guy like revolver buy its a much less superior weapon compared to a semi auto. its cool to use them and like them i still do but im not disillusioned into thinking all these part true and minor reason on this list that really dont matter or make since that the revolver is better than it is. its out dated weapons that are fun and have a purpose but some take it way to far.

Without a doubt the revolver is the safest and easy to use carry pistol their is, now i know its a boat anchor but that also is a pro. Im not sure about you but i want to shoot the bad guy before he gets within 3 feet with 3 rounds and in 3 seconds. Practice shooting longer ranges and you can keep the bad guy away from you. Practice what you carry and keep your head down.

    "Revolvers never jam." Funny story...the very first time I shot a revolver was a Ruger SP101 with Hornady Critical Defense. Went a little something like this: *BANG* *BANG* "Huh?" The primer from the first round fell out of the case halfway (but was also still stuck to the inside of it somehow), and it was just enough to completely prevent the cylinder from turning. Best guess is the ammo was out of spec because I had to take a wooden rod (and a considerable amount of force) to dislodge the casings, and I didn't have a single issue with any other ammo types that whole day. Freak incident? Absolutely. Do I think anything less of revolvers? Absolutely not. Was it an eye-opening experience? Yes. Yes it was. Moral of the story? ALWAYS test any equipment you're gonna trust your life to, no matter how well-earned a good reputation it has.

  • @GunSam

    I have had only one hangup with a centerfire revolver, and opening the cylinder and closing it solved the issue. I think because O always clean them that this is why I rarely have issues. Some of these tactical guys expect them to run like Glocks but that's not how they are meant to be taken care of, the whole "throw a revolver in a drawer and in 20 years it will still fire" is bad advice.
