Now typical .38 Special+P ammo ranges from 230 to 300 ft lbs energy in a 3" barrel, as where a 9mm to 9mm+P ranges from 330 to 400 ft lbs energy in a 4" barrel, but....In my 4" barrel revolver look at the numbers I got with a few loads; 1. Underwood .38 Special+P 158 gr LSWC is #1 in recoil. Hurts too much to shoot in a 16oz gun and can't do fast follow up shots.. The non +p version is perfect for light weight revolvers, but it has more recoil than +p from standard manufactures. The Underwood +p 125g Golddot is #2 in recoil. I really need to try Supervel. Somebody needs to make a device to test recoil. I've found that the calculation sometimes doesn't match real world feel.

Excerpt from-- .38 Snubbies vs. .380 Autos: Choices for On-Body Carry by Jim Williamson Roving Editor There are so many types of .38 Special ammo that I’ll list only those that I personally favor. We should ignore the basic 158-grain lead RN, which doesn’t expand, and which reaches only 700 fps or less from a snub barrel. Remington’s classic 125-grain JHP gave 875 fps in one test that I consulted, and Speer’s Gold Dot usually clocks 885-900 fps. This is exceptional from a 2-inch barrel, and that bullet holds together well and has the energy to get in deep. The new 135-grain version, especially tailored for use in snubs, should be even better, and NYCPD, for whom it was designed, has gotten good field results with it. It has yet to appear in local stores, and no test ammo was available, so I can’t report more on it. I asked Federal’s PR man to check with their engineers as to how their 129-grain Hydra-Shok behaves in short barrels. Check Sources They chronographed some, and it ran 865 fps in a snub and 936 fps from a 3-inch barrel. That’s impressive, and the bullet usually behaves well in animal tissue. To see if this was typical, I checked another source, and the figures were within a very few feet of those supplied by Federal. That’s unusually consistent. Hydra-Shok remains one of my favorite loads for defense and hunting purposes in several calibers. Winchester’s 130-grain SXT is also excellent. Many feel that the best .38 defense round ever is the Plus P lead HP introduced by Winchester circa 1972, and eventually offered by Federal, Remington, and a few others. Various brands differ a little in how hard the lead formula is, but all seem to offer some expansion, even in a 2-inch barrel. Moreover, the bullet penetrates until next payday, a vital factor if one has to shoot a heavy man or a large animal. Velocity runs some 775-810 fps, depending on brand, ammo lot, and the particular gun. Using a 3-inch barrel may well produce velocity beyond 850 fps, making this a very serious social item. Massad Ayoob has graciously consented to my citing his results with this lead HP load on pigs in a slaughterhouse. Briefly, he tried a number of .380 auto loads, and none performed really well. Some did a poor enough job that he decided that it was inhumane to continue using them, if memory serves. Then, he tried the lead .38 Special HP. It routinely went through the heavy skin, the thick skull, and either lodged at the rear of the brain case or penetrated beyond. (Results varied with the particular shot.) Deaths were pretty much instant, with extensive brain damage. He feels that this was exceptional performance from a compact, handy sidearm. I concur. Those of you worried about bears or rabid or feral dogs should keep his tests in mind. I think they represent the best data we have for comparing .380 autos to snub .38 Specials. Certain other .38 rounds also offer better performance than the .380 ammo that I know about. This doesn’t mean that the .380 is a total flop when used on humans or small mammals or most snakes. Those pigs are quite large targets for a gun handy enough to fit in many pockets. I realize that people normally succumb to bullet wounds more readily than do most other mammals of similar weight. But when one can, it is best to tilt the scales in the right direction. With this in mind, and the overall reliability factor favoring the revolver, I think I’ll stick to the snub and 3-inch barreled .38 revolvers for most of my own use. There are occasions when the shape and size of the .380 and its generally better pointing and recoil control factors may lead me to use a .380. But, across the board, the .38 snub is the best choice in this comparison.

Only problem with that is... Most people who would carry an ultralight .38 snub nose (older folks, women, smaller framed people) would also probably not be able to control the damned thing. Between the 15 pound trigger pull and extensive recoil, I think there are plenty better options for most people. Not knocking revolvers, .38 spl, or J frames (or old people or women, for that matter!), I just think that their drawbacks are not looked at as realistically as they should be. As a real world example, I was at a range with an ole boy and his lady, probably both mid 60s. While he was a deadeye with his 44 mag, she was struggling to hit 10 inch groups at 7 yards with her J frame 38. She really struggled with the DA trigger pull.

I'm going to have to disagree there. The average person isn't a shooter. Tiny j frame revolvers are some of the hardest guns to shoot for novice shooters. Whenever a student brings a j frame to class we end up swapping them for a mid size or full sized pistol to learn on because it's difficult to follow the fundamentals on guns that are very small or very large.

I can't believe how many people have watched this stupid thing lol. I made it when I had like 1k subs which is more like a FB group of fiends. But even now if I had to add to this video, I would say that the .38 Special still is the best cartridge. I mean, we have two real popular kings, the .38 Special and the 9mm. Yes more pistols are chambered in 9mm, some are great and I own several and the 9mm is the best cartridge for a semi auto as it's the most reliable, a lot less can go wrong from "limp wristing". But in general, a .38 Special is just as powerful as 9mm when loaded properly, has more variety of power and more reliable for more people. When the average citizen needs 3 rounds for self defense (statistical average is 3), going with something low recoil, totally reliable and still powerful enough to work, the .38 is hard to beat. "BUT MULTIPLE ATTACKERS!", (hear it daily) my response is, kid you're not a cop....watch videos of what happens when multiple attackers attack a citizen and they start to shoot, they all scatter.

I saw this video pop up on my recommended list and decided to give it another watch. I can't give it another thumbs up, but I would if I could. I've been thinking for some time now that the 35 caliber class might be the ideal bullet diameter for handguns. That is, it may have about the ideal cross sectional area for the velocities you get out of a typical handgun cartridge. I can't be the only person who thinks that way. Look at all the cartridges in the class: .380 ACP, .38 Spl, 9x18mm (Makarov), 9x19mm (Luger), .357 Magnum, .357 Sig, and whatever I've missed. The revolver flavors don't have to worry about feeding issues, so you can shape the bullet anyway you like. The .380 ACP can be truly tiny (I really want a Seacamp LWS380). The 9x19mm has seriously good size efficiency in terms of round count in a given size pistol. And the .357 Magnum has more capability than required for self defense use and takes you solidly into handgun hunting territory.

I believe that American is widely to blame for the 9mm diameter craze. We go back 150 years or more with .36 caliber cartridges and conversions. European countries and Japan followed suit around the year 1900 and the rest is history, although .30 caliber handgun cartridges were very popular around the world, and I guess you could say our .32 caliber handguns were similar as they are actually all .312". Off topic, I been researching a lot about the .38 Short Colt and .38 Long Colt, as they are the grandparents of the .357 Magnum and Parent to the .38 Special. I plan to start working with some .38 Short Colt ammo, saving the brass and reloading it to shoot out of my revolvers. I plan on doing a video on low recoil options for weaker people, and showing that .38 Short Colt ammo and .38 Special Wadcutters are a good option for a .38 Special revolver rather than resorting to going to a .22 revolver or pistol.

  • @Fudmottin

@@GunSam I had no idea we had been messing around with that diameter for so long. The only big bore I can name that is popular today for self defense is the .45 ACP. You don't see people carrying .45 Colt that often. The .40 S&W and it's parent the 10mm are also second class calibers (in sales, not in power). Sounds like an interesting idea to look at lower power loads for self defense. I don't know how much recoil the .327 Federal Magnum has, but I can only name one company off the top of my head that is chambering for it. Good old Ruger. I think one thing to bring up when talking low powered .38 loads is why them instead of .22lr or anything that is .32 ACP or smaller. Handling tiny guns gets difficult quickly as the size goes down. Reliability of autoloaders suffers. A J-Frame can have a spring kit installed and still be reliable. It's also still large enough to manipulate properly. It would be interesting to see how low you can go on the energy scale and still be effective with a .38. You'll have to give up expansion.

Just not in the Pacific. The army ditched them quickly due to poor performance on small Filipinos. The .38 spcl wasn't putting them down and then they went full nuts and demanded the .45 and stuck with it for like 70 years (I'm not a .45 guy and have never owned one so don't think I'm saying 45 or nothing). Law enforcement even found it too under powered and the .357 was born. .38 spcl will cause pain for sure but without quality hollow points and good shot placement it isn't all that spectacular.

@@margovallen the .38 special is actually almost the same round as a 9mm there is only a difference of 2/100 of an inch in diameteter hwich is basically nothing, additionally the .38 special cartridge isn't longer because it holds more powder, the difference in length is because the .38 special cartridge was designed for black powder of which it would have taken much more to produce the desired effect, so while a .38 special cartridge does have more space inside than a 9mm, in practice 9mm cartridges often outperform .38 special cartridges because they generate more pressure in the smaller case. bottom line is that, unless you hand load a really hot .38 special (at which point i don't see why you wouldn't just make the jump to a .357 magnum) they won't perform any better than a 9mm and in many cases actually worse.

I agree. The small revolvers that chamber the .38 are an invitation to carry ALL the time, not just occasionally. It takes so little effort to slip one into a pocket holster just before you leave the house that it soon becomes SOP. And the comfort of carrying such a small gun reinforces the habit. And the cartridge itself is just about at the outer limits of realistic chambering for a 15 oz revolver; anything more and a reasonable person will soon be skipping needed practice sessions at the range to avoid pain. No, the .38 is a very attractive round when everything's considered.

As it is not as reliable in semi-autos and if want a suppressed handgun on your night stand or something of that matter, then .45 ACP is a much better choice. I also said it would work in most instances but would result in sub optimal performance, such as in a fussy 9mm autoloader the case will have a slight bulge causing feed issues, or in the case of .356 projectiles in a .357 magnum lever gun if not crimped to excessive levels can cause the projectile to be pushed into the case. The smaller projectile also causes accuracy issues as there isn't a correct seal in the barrel (gas cutting causing leading issues also in cast lead) Now as someone who supposedly builds engines would you say it's important that unless you have no other choice (mad max dystopia for instance) you put the right fuel in your car to win the race and avoid issues?

The reason most carried a Colt semi auto .45 was for the stopping power, the reason that they changed to the .45 was that during WWI and in Japan in WWII the Germans, and the Japanese would give their Soilders methamphetamine right before they were set to charge the line. Many officers died because the .38 round had little to no affect on meth fueled Soilders charging at them. The .45 on the other hand would knock them down, plus they had 8 rounds instead of six, and magazines were easier to change. The old .38 calibers are nothing like the newer .38 rounds. The old .38 were way under powered, from what the newer rounds are, the newer .38 P and + P are almost as good as a .357 round, Not to mention all the new Hollow Point designs, that are made to rip through flesh and bone. The old military rounds were smooth brass with a lead center they would go right through and body, so unless you got off a head shot or hit something vital, a meth fueled Soilder could just keep coming until he bled out. I really surprised your friend made it through the combats just carrying a .38 because the Koreans were notorious for using meth during combats.

@@alsnipe My full time main carry gun is now a S&W 66 4-inch. I load it with the 38 SPL +P 158 gr LSWC-HP rounds (Normally Remington, but also the standard pressure BB, which is as hot as the +P Rem, Win & Fed!). My original CC was a 1991A1 Colt Commander in 45 ACP. I next moved to a Springfield XD 357 SIG. Found the S&W 66 for cheap at a pawn shop. Started carrying it alternatively to the Commander and XD. Pretty soon the S&W 66 was being carried all the time, to the point that the Commander and XD were sold. The 4-inch "K" frame S&W is much easier to hide and carries so much easier than the "blocky" autos. Also, even though the revolver "only" carries 6 rounds, the ability of the K-frame S&W to precisely and rapidly place a bullet exactly where you want it, even at 50+ yards is AMAZING. For me, the confidence factor that the K-frame S&W provides, in its ability to hit so quickly and precisely, FAR outweighs the capacity advantage of the autos. Also the 38 SPL 158 gr LSWC-HP hits very hard, yet is so controllable and ACCURATE, and that is another big confidence booster in carrying the S&W 66 4-inch. I suppose you could say, that after a little practice, the simple, no-fuss, easy-going, totally reliable, competent "personality" of the S&W 66 won me over from the higher cap autos!

My choices are as rationale for shotguns, rifles, and the likes as well. The 38 Special is however, the very best of revolver handguns. "Practical over shiny and sparkly any day!"

Thank you for this video. I love the .38 and I think people overlook it now, which is a shame. I was born in 1969 and grew up with police carrying this gun and there was never any question as to it being effective. Capacity was the issue starting in 1979 with the Miami Dade mall shooting, when cops first encountered machine pistols being used by cocaine dealers and they felt outgunned. The 9mm did not prove to be an effective replacement, hence the birth of the .40. I am happily awaiting my order of 100 rounds of UMC .38 + p SJHP after being sold out for 2 months and I am in the market for another S & W model 15.

I still have the antique furnace and bullet molds that I started with in the late 60s. I wish I could send you a picture of the model 64 police trade-in (DAO) that is high on my ccw rotation. The barrel has been cut to 3" and the barrel has been slabbed and dove tailed for a 1911 snag free front sight. Caliber designation stamped under the barrel flat. Work done by Carlo Valour. The cylinder has been recessed for full moon clips by TK Customs (shoots with or without using clips). I did the trigger work and cut the spur off, rounded the grip and fitted it with custom boot grips. This 38 spl. revolver is a pleasure to shoot.

Agree with you there. The way I see it, the major point against a revolver, is definitely the capacity. I've only got 5 in my small framed revolvers, where as i've got 8 in my 9mm Shield. That could make a large difference in a confrontation, where as if we're talking the difference between a full size auto, where you've got between 14-20, there's not much difference in it.

The .38 Special is probably the most versatile, easy to load and shoot, forgiving cartridge you can find. One thing no-one really talks about is how a 2" J-frame is an easy gun to carry, and BTW, you are best having the gun with you than left at home. For those who chose to argue: I carried a 2.5" k-frame butt M29 for YEARS :-) I still love the 38Spec. I shoot it in revolvers from 2" to 6", a S&W M52 and it's accurate in everything. My favorite defensive ammo would be Federal HydraShok, FWIW.

From the broad availability of both new and used guns to the large number of different types of ammo manufactured, there’s something there for every shooter. When we get small, the revolver retains reliability but the auto often does not. That .327 Federal with low end loads matches the 9mm's energy but with less recoil, and only one shot less.

I think it was in a book by Jack Oconner of a woman killing a grizz with one shot from a single shot bolt action .22LR. Luck may have had a hand in that too.

My favorite Caliber is 10mm, but I absolutely love the 38 Special, it will always hold a special place in my heart! It's probably my favorite casual conceal weapon because of how compact and comfortable it is to carry. And I never feel underpowered with it

GARYSGUNS yeah I buy .357 models because it's got even more ammunition options than the same size .38 models. I also don't mind carrying a stainless revolver because the added weight dampens recoil some. currently carrying a s&w 60-14.

GARYGUNS I love the 357 mag too in my 6" barrel the best. For a snub nose I would think the 38 would be better or I would not shoot it as much. I like that I can shoot 38 out of my 357 mag at a range too. It is a good price sometimes.

Just remember that a .357 out of a snubby with a 2" barrel, might give you some ejection problems because of the long case. The ejector rod just isn't all that long. Hopefully the .357 did its job with the first cylinder, because it could take you a while to get the rest of the bullets in. .38spl doesn't have that problem, nor do 3" .357 guns. Just something to be aware of, and it might not even be an issue, depending on who made your gun.

I acquired a Ruger Security Six with 4 inch barrel from a police department that switched over to the trendy 9mm semi-auto. Has never jammed, never failed to fire, and with Pachmeyer gripper grips it fits my big hands perfectly. My chosen weapon for home defense and self defense on the road. When shooting 357 magnum, the flame it throws is awesome, but the 38 special is safer for home defense and easier to shoot.

I carry 38 Spl +P on my EDC cylinder, and 357 reloads on my speed loaders. I mostly carry a 3” SP101. I’m more likely to let off a round without hearing protection in a small room or car, but if I need to shoot through a wall, I have the 357s. I also reload, and I don’t like picking brass off the floor.

Nothing wrong with a .38, it's done the job for years and will continue to do so. You can look at ballistics all day trying to find a perfect cartridge. But the truth is a couple .38s center mass do the job as well as everything else. Excluding super magnums, rifles, and shotguns of course.

My favorite feature in a revolver is that there is no such thing as a "feeding issue"! You can load it with full metal jackets or round-nosed lead for practice. You can load it with jacketed hollow-points, semi-wadcutters, semi-wadcutter hollow-points and even full-on wadcutters and it doesn't care! It will feed whatever you load into it and put it on target without a bobble or quibble. It's just up to you to make sure that you put the bullet--whatever bullet you might choose--where it counts!

For a lot of the reasons listed and because over penetration is a concern for household defense the 38spl is my EDC and my wifes. Capacity is the only down side but lugging a heavy subcompact 9mm around and trying to conceal it were a bigger negative keeping me from carrying sometimes. Just practice practice and i think that's the key shot placement trumps capacity.
