So, interestingly enough, for Raen lore, they believe they come from Azem, because they were originally part of the Steppe tribes. Descendants wise, they all came from a singular Au'ra race, that had deep red/red brown scales, that lived in the mountains of the Azim Steppe. For some reason, never explained in game or out of game, besides through hints in the Raen and Xaela creation myths (Azem and Nhaama had to leave their children and return to the sky, causing the children to split between the two parents) the Xaela and Raen were born. The Raen were more like the Qestir Xaela tribe; they preferred to create permanent settlements and were the first of the tribes to practice agriculture. But due to this, they became physically weaker than their nomadic counterparts in the Xaela, who fully embraced the warlike nature, to the point that many of the Raen tribes were forced to migrate to survive. The Raen can yes, be found now throughout Othard, but their primary residences are in Thavnair (the largest of the Raen tribes moved there,) and in Sui-no-Sato, where Yugiri is from. Sui-no-Sato is not the only underwater lizard city either. There are a few others scattered throughout the South Seas, between Thavnair and Mericydia. The rest of the Raen who remained in the Steppe, were killed or assimilated into the larger Xaela tribes, and they lost their scale differentiation. The Xaela due to their warlike nomadic culture have remained unchanged (generally) since that ancient split. The tribes may change, but the Xaela generally don't, and the only variation that is known (Scale wise) is that there is a singular tribe with pure black scales, versus the black-blue scales that we have in game. There are several tribes with heavier scale coverage, a tribe with males who tower over max height Roes, and many more! They also have never suffered from any of the known Calamities, or any of the Othardian wars until the creation of the Burn, as the desert there before was closer to the Gobi, a high desert with more vegetation than the Burn, and there were several tribes that lived in the old desert that existed there. They speak Eorzean common but have their own distinct language as well, on top of a few of the tribes having tribe specific either "body language" like the Qestir, whistle tongue like one of the nomad tribes, and short sign like another of the hunter tribes. And as you pointed out, yes! The Raen are closer to a hodgepodge of Chinese/Japanese when found in Sui-no-Sato and Othard, but in Thavnair as you have seen, they are closer to Sub-Continental cultures, like Nepalese and Indian. The Xaela are based on Eurasian Steppe cultures of the later 16th century onwards, and most of their words are current Mongolian, which as you pointed out, is similar to Turkish, as Mongolian, Korean, and Turkish, all come from an ancient Turkic language that formed in the Eurasian steppe. The Encyclopedia Eorzea (the lore book written by a chronicler’s point of view) has great info on the Miqo, and if you are looking for more in game lore, doing the side quests in the Gridanian areas, then the hot springs town in Thanalan, then the tribe’s side quests in Stormblood, fleshes out even more. Gridanian quests are for moonies, and the thanalan ones and Stormblood ones are for Seekers.

Azim/Azem is easy to mistake for a reason. The Au Ra creation myth is essentially a heavily embellished, distorted version of the conflict of Hydaelyn and Zodiark -- essentially meaning their creation "myth" is _actual history_ , they just got a few names wrong and missed a few details. It's so good. FFXIV lore is SO good.

About the whole 'kissing' question: Au Ra canonically rub their horns together if they cannot kiss. The best part of this lore is that someone asked "Do Au Ra rub their horns as equivalent to kissing?" to Yoshi-P himself, and he said "They do now!" Also the boys' itty bitty waists is absolute top tier. Male Au Ra are the best twinks in the game fight me.

Honestly really love that for Yoshi-P that his attitude about fan suggestions is "headcanon accepted", everything I hear about him is so wholesome ㅠㅠ like apparently he also told people it's okay to take a break from the game if you're feeling bored or burnt out, you don't have to force yourself to play for the sake of playing.

AAAAAA I'm so happy to see you cover Au Ra ♥ Au Ra is my favourite race in the game and I ADORE their pretty scales. I swear most of my alts are all Au Ra with my main being Au Ra as well. I find it super relaxing to watch Au Ra use the hum emote and just watch their tails gently swish swish it's just so nice.

The whole Aura serving their friends their tails reminds me of Dragon maid lol

One thing I really like about Au Ra is that Raen are so widespread in the world that you can really go with just about any background and it could work just as well as with Hyur characters. Doma, Werlyt, and Radz-at-Han all have established populations of Raen. You can really have fun building a story with a flexible fantasy character unlike the other original races to FFXIV.

I gave my Au'ra alt black eyes so I could change her limbal rings to suit her outfits without worrying about them clashing!

as a black scale male au ra I do my absolute damnedest to keep from looking like an edgelord. I'm tryna be the submissive himbo needle in the brooding au ra haystack

Hahaha "handlebars" I'm glad I'm not the only one to have thought that. And besides, I didn't know about the tails regrowth nor about the hollowness of the horns so that's a neat little fun fact.

My male Au Ra alt was made because: - I wanted a third character to play through the third city state starting quests and then get through the MSQ changes with. - I wanted to recreate my ashen skinned Himbo D&D Tiefling in FF XIV (the only reason I didn't choose the thicc tail). - Male Au Ra are so hot.

Au Ra don't need to kiss to share affection. We touch the sides of our horns to the people we like! Personally, I like to describe the clan-based colors for Raen and Xaela as pearlescent and onyx, respectively...The former has the shiny, cream-like hue very similar to Raen scales and the latter can have a similar dark black-and-blue tone! And yes, thank you...We are fabulous and beautiful. But don't worry, we're not judging you...Much =3

1:13 According to YoshiP, Au Ra people show their affection by rubbing their horn softly to other one's horn. It was one of those many fan lore at first, but YoshiP simply approved it to be canon in the fanfest. How cool!

I'm a max-height male Au Ra. A couple of weeks ago, I tried to the the Kugane tower sightseeing entry-which took me HOURS of frustration, to the point I had to sleep it off for the next day. Funny thing is, all the guides I could find showed Lalafells. Other people also tried the puzzle at the same time, and they were also Lalafells; I stopped seeing them after a few minutes, which meant either they easily made it to the top or just stopped trying. I was half-convinced my character's height was screwing me over for this puzzle; like with the jump from the corner of the sign, onto a wooden outcropping, where I swear I kept falling because my feet kept getting caught. Of course, the more likely explanation is the height was just messing with my perception of the already wonky hitboxes--but it still pissed me off.

Best name for the color of xaela scales I can think of is 'indigo'

_"Scales of sunlight, scales of midnight; we are one, beneath the sky."_ -- The Words of Malaguld And now to indulge myself: I'm deeply proud of the fact that, if you know your Au Ra lore, you can see my Raen, named Maral Malaguld, and immediately have some idea of her ethnic background, as well as what her parents may have been like, based on just that name and clan combination. Even more if you know the nomenclature of "Maral" (which our resident AvyCatte probably does!) and put that together with her distinctly dark, South Asian-reminiscent complexion. To sum it all up: Her parents come respectively from Thavnair (India-based) and central Othard (Altaic/Mongolian-based), belonged to a clan of outcasts (Raen and Xaela alike), who most certainly adopted one of them -- most likely the Raen/Thavnairan parent, as the lore presents Malaguld as Xaela but adopting of Raen. So Maral's the daughter of a Thavnairan criminal and a child of the Steppe. (The details: Her dad was the criminal; he was a premier alchemist of the Great Work but was exiled for the crime of breeding Red Chocobos. No, seriously, THAT'S HOW RED CHOCOBOS HAPPENED, and I've just welded my own canon to that particular gem of FFXIV's actual canon)

I mostly play Miqo'te, but I occasionally switch it up and go Au Ra for a while. I can't make up my mind sometimes because I love both of them so much. However, once female Hrothgar are available... I have the feeling I'll go that route and never look back XD

We have an embarrassment of riches when it comes to most options! My own Xaela is ghostly pale because it makes her dark scales even more noticable. About the only thing I could ask for is the ability to pick my horn shape independently of my face! I managed to sculpt mine out of the base 1st shape to have a more rounded look to it, but I'm stuck with the swept-back horns when I really want the batwing-shaped ones

My first character is an Au Ra that i based on an OC i already had, and i didn't realize at the time that the males only come in different flavors of the tallest, so my ninja spymaster lizard ended up getting a whole foot and a half growthspurt even at at the lowest end of the slider. I started as Hyur, but changed to Au Ra Raen early in the game and I love it.

My Raen girl has blue eyes, and one cyan limbal ring on the eye that's partially covered by her hair. It. Looks. GORGEOUS. I'm so attached to this character. I tried to fantasia after beating EW but seeing someone else in her glamours was strange, so I changed back a couple months later.

i didnt think much of this race....then i met Mikoto Jinba. then i was like wow this NPC is stunning. just a very pretty look.

I was wondering: I noticed it the other day when playing with a friend who's an Au Ra that his character's earrings hang from the horns.

To answer number one, pool noodles! Just cut the foam enough so they can slide the noodle over the horn and TA-DA! No more holey pillows!

Fun fact, some male lizard end up max height because you started with a female one, see it was a bit too soft and small, and switched to male and didn't know about the size gap. Also, it's great to have a resting bitch face, and slightly akward facial emoting. Really make me close with my lizard. So many common point. "It got to hurts" - pretty sure everyone wondered at least once, even my ace fellow, no need to be an erp. Like... this is morbid curiosity at this point.

What about 10 reasont to play Roe or Hrothgar?

When I made an au ra character, i sorted ended up with agent 47 undercover look... but with a lot of dragon horns.

The reason my femra has blue skin is because I'm also a destiny player and I love awoken :D I would imagine that's not the reasoning for most players haha. I also like to think my femra is a mix of xaela and raen.

Dear Diary: Another day, another video about ff14 races from Avy where it still isnt Roegadyn. Will she ever make a video about the race i play? Will be another video where just hear the usual that i know myself. Like that 80% of male Roegadyn that you see are... weird. Not the fun way but the creepy way. Who knows. I will still await the day wher she will finally upload the Roegadyn with lots of hopes.
