I think a great example for updating the map is RDR2. Arthur or John draw interesting places, animals and plants on the map as you explored them. Anf obviously the journal with both guys having a different style of drawing and writting. It's amazing.

One of the first games that I can recall handles ladders well is Prince of Persia: Sands of Time. Not only did it allow for sliding down ladders, but it also let the Prince climb on a ladder from any direction, and then had him flip around to whichever side he'd need to be on at the top. That was huge, because there were absolutely games that you could climb up on the wrong side and then have to go back down and try again. Ladders have improved immensely over the years.

Former firefighter here. No we NEVER slide down the ladder. That would be a terrible idea during a fire. Despite what people think, the way to survive hazardous environments is to avoid unnecessary risks.
About the realistic looting. In Kingdom Come: Deliverance, you can loot everything from an enemy, every piece of armour he is wearing - and it can even be damaged due to your hits on him during the fight - the food, everything. Down to the shirts and shoes. It is amazing. And you can equip everything you loot and not just sell it.

Stopping and really considering them, I think number 3 has probably made the biggest impact (in enjoyment) for me. The frustration coming from just bouncing off a ledge & falling to your death, or being stopped by some puny object when you're chasing/escaping-from something, just really takes you out of the game. Something unrealistic that Insurgency does (and quite a few other games I can't be bothered to remember right now) is cancel a reload if you start running without letting the animation fully play out. I'd even wait until the magazine was definitely inside the well (where it can just be slapped/rocked home while you're taking your first step) and it acts like I haven't reloaded. The scribbling on maps is one of my favorite game details ever done, and makes me want to 100% the maps.
Besides the sliding down a ladder (the ladder in the final level of Psychonauts being one of my favorites, visually) being able to jump on to a ladder and start climbing is an excellent mechanic. Also being actually locked onto a ladder is comforting, knowing that you won't accidently fall off if you move too much to the side.
Well, there's always using the sounds of the wind to your advantage and finding a match, lit it up and throw it on some gasoline in order to set the enemy camp on fire. I like gameplay mechanics that allows me to use the elements to my advantage. 😃

Great vid! Just to mention that the "last known position" mechanic I really learned to exploit in Far Cry 1 (2004), so waaay earlier than Splinter Cell Conviction (2010).

Even Metal Gear Solid (1998) - the one shown in the clip - had a form of "last known position" since if you broke line of sight and stayed hidden, the enemy would search the area starting with where you were last spotted.

Жыл бұрын
Of all of the fun immersive mechanics they put into Batman Arkham Asylum, that was the one that really made me feel like Batman, especially for all of the ways they let you exploit it - grappling to overhanging gargoyles, dropping into floor vents or ducking through wall ducts. What was even better was successfully detonating explosive gel you put down around the last know position when other thugs came to investigate.
I’d like to give an honorable mention to having limited ammo like the resident evil games. It’s probably a point of contention for most people, but I find the lack of immediate resources very thrilling and fun
@TheSultan1470
Жыл бұрын
Yeah, I think the absolute "worst" game when it comes to this is GTA V. Absolute mayhem. You carry EVERY weapon in the game on you at ALL times and up to *9999* ammo for all of them INCLUDING *25* of each explosive weapon! JESUS
@lukeskywalker987
Жыл бұрын
For me it really varies. I absolutely love that stressful "bullet-to-bullet" action in RE, but the adaptive difficulty and enemy durability kind of cheapen the feeling since I can't predict how many bullets I need for an enemy and be strategic with when to use it. I still like the mechanic, but I'm also glad to see different approaches like *Dying Light*, where the guns do good damage, but also draw the attention of a dozen more enemies nearby, so you have to plan around that.
@TheSultan1470
Жыл бұрын
@@Unknown_Genius Well, about "it's GTA", previous entries (most of them) had you carrying only a single weapon of each category and a sensible ammount of ammo (since you can't insta buy max ammuntion at gun stores like V, you're unlikely to reach an absurd ammount in a normal playthrough). The next game seems to be going in that RDR2 direction.
Yay! Finally! Someone besides me mentions how awesome destructible environments are! Most games with them know how to make it satisfying af! I'm going to disagree a bit with destructible environments. Needing to care about how the floor or ceiling of buildings and caves you're in is not fun in real life. Plus, most of the time that collapsing building implodes very unrealistic neatly. Not to mention how annoying realistic explosive effects on your hearing/balance would be.
@jakebrady7426

@@pokyboss4281 not talking about the real life version. Also, most of what you said, is why the game version is so fun. Also also, if you want actually fun and safe (at least safe enough anyway) destruction, I recommend Rage Grounds. You wear protective gear and break things in a safe room such as mirrors. It's uber satisfying and therapeutic! 👍🏻

@@onlypardo3902 not talking about killing. Also, look up/check out Rage Grounds...it is a literal place where they make it fun and safe to destroy certain smaller objects while you wear protective gear. Also, on that front, to each their own! I'm not forcing anyone to have fun these ways, I'm just saying to allow me to have fun with them...again, on the destruction in a safe environment/video game front...Rage Grounds and any video games that allow it.
I was down and out really bad with Covid last year and that is when I found you guys and started binging your list. Your videos are awesome and keep up the good work my dudes!
I love destructible environments. I've recently replayed "Stranglehold" (not a 10/10 game by any stretch, but it's turn-off-your-brain fun) and for a game from 2007 the amount of shit you can wreck is admirable.
shadow of mordor/war is like a perfect mix of several of these points. also, i laughed when yal cut that last of us sneak execution short
GEARS OF WAR: I don't know how realistic it is to slide down a ladder with a weapon drawn, but I entirely appreciate it in these games. Helps the pacing in combat. More so, mantling waist-high cover. Yess! ✊🏻
9:35 The Antikythera Mechanism was lost in the Mediterranean sea off the island of Antikythera circa 200 BCE. When discovered in 1901, while a lot of it had been damaged or destroyed, the bulk of the piece remained such that it could be reconstructed, including the glyphs carved into the surface of the metal that were still visible (where it hadn't been destroyed). If the place an ancient mechanism was stored in was newer than that (most are around the time period of the colonial era, from what we've seen, so easily) or had better conditions than that (not hard to be better off than being submerged in saltwater sea, which will drastically corrode most metals, including high-corrosion-resistance alloys like brass or bronze, and stone of all kinds, through mechanical function (deposits forming and breaking apart the stone) or corrosion, just like metals), working mechanisms made from stone and/or metal seems perfectly reasonable to still be in operation. Similarly, there's wooden furniture from the Gordian royal tombs excavated that was in nearly usable condition, dating back 2700 years ago, or about 700-800 BCE (the time of the Phyrgian King, Midas); while the joins have rotted away, we're talking small diameter, finely carved wood, not the sort of large wood pieces that would be involved in a tomb's mechanism.
The fire suppression and flanking mechanics of the Brothers-in-Arms games should be included in this list. The mechanics were modelled after real WW2 tactics with devs having paintball gun games for simulation.
Sort of like characters adding to maps, I’ve always wondered why developers don’t allow players to place pins in our own maps and add our own notes. Example: level 20 chest here. This would be super easy, super helpful and wouldn’t likely be anything world-breaking if there was a decent character limit.
@RSProduxx

#2 makes me think of Elden Ring (which wasn't the first one with this mechanic, but perhaps the most recent) that some enemies are resistant/weak to different types of physical damage, such as slashing, blunt, crushing, piercing, etc. Adds a nice layer of depth on how you face certain enemies and bosses

One of my favorite realistic gameplay mechanics that a lot of games don't have is being able to pit npcs against each other. In the left behind dlc for the last of us, Ellie is being hunted by a group of people in a mall that also has a lot of infected in it. At several points you can use the infected to your advantage against the people hunting you

@@jaredcrabb the second game yes, but believe it or not there actually aren't any areas with both infected and human enemies in the first game, that's why you get a mini tutorial on it in the left behind DLC. There are a few places that feel like you can in the first game, but they are controlled so that the enemies don't actually interact, or if they do it's a scripted cut scene type encounter. Like both sniper nest locations in Pittsburgh. The first the infected are being taken out by the sniper, but when you get close enough to actually do something to the sniper the infected stop spawning. At the second one in the neighborhood at first the infected stay in specific areas and the human enemies won't go to those locations until the infected are cleared out. Then once you take over the sniper nest you have to deal with both human and infected enemies, but they don't interact except for one cut scene.

Going off of number 5, I love when games include the map and setting and menus in the game. Like in jedi fallen you had to meditate to get to the skill tree or the map that BD-1 had was physically in the world. It is such a nice game
You literally show footage of MGS2 where the guards had to call in back-up on the radio first; if you have destroyed their radio they won't be able to call back-up at all and only the soldiers on the floor are hostile. If you break line of sight they search the -last known position- in the awesome clearing mode. Splinter Cell might have been the first to show ghost UI though to make it more apparent- but it was not the first. :)
Slicing Mechanics - In 2009, "Fairytale Fights" had analog stick controlled slicing of enemies, with blade weapons. It would even open a zoom window of the real slices you performed. But not easy to control accurately :)

I was watching a buddy play Medal of Honor on PS and the fact that it wasn't "hit enemy X times - dead" blew me away.
Full environmental destruction is one of those crazy things about gaming for me. Back in the day playing something like the first Mercenaries on PS2 and seeing what that game was capable of...I thought the future of gaming was definitely going to be that this would be the norm for all games. I thought full environmental destruction would be so commonplace that it was no longer special anymore. But even now it's such a niche thing that's so special, that's it's almost disappointing that we're at where we're at in gaming, and in a lot of cases we still have to deal with bushes acting like steel wall. It's one of those things where the better graphics get...they more resources it takes to pull something like this off. So it kind of makes you wonder if we'll ever be able to achieve that level of immersive detail, if graphics are just going to continue to improve as time goes on.
As a person who has done a lot of demo I'd like to say that yes, you can destroy everything with a good hammer.

In the game Skies of Arcadia (Dreamcast) / Skies of Arcadia: Legends (GameCube), there was a cosmetic game mechanic that made fights more immersive then fighting in games like Final Fantasy or Phantasy Star. In the normal player party vs. enemy party fights, seen in pretty much every RPG game, when it is your character's turn, you can observe the party and the monsters still lunging, slashing, dodging, and whatnot, around you. It was purely cosmetic, no damage dealt or taken, but it made fights much more immersive and fun then static fights in the other games.
I'm surprised no mention of Noita at 10 and 8 considering how much destruction can be done there

Thanks for your suggestion. Noted.
I do like too that type of loot system, I mean of course if you can pick up items from the ground, why wouldnt you be able to pick item from a corpse?. What I find unreal/dumb tho is the fact that EVERY armor fits you or the fact the armor is usable even tho you just exploded or split in half its user
There are a lot of features that are not yet fully explored (afaik) that I would love to see. First is actually having to organize a backpack in any looter game, not just an inventory, but the physical object, or at least a 2d representation of it, and realistically, like damaging the backpack with sharp or heavy objects. The other one is tripping, for some reason I think we should have some falls while too heavy and running, so do the enemy AI. The last one is being able to interact with everything using the physical object, like doorknobs, keys, buttons, switches, with as little inputs as possible, like VR. And also being able to key bind just the actions more fit to it.
Some of my favorite blade action was in Afro Samurai. Swords felt dangerous
0:49 game name?

Red Faction: Armageddon
You COULD aim down sight in Goldeneye. I'm 46 and I remember being in awe, entering the snow field level and being able to ADS and zoom in on the enemies. And I think the animal petting should have been number one.
the armor mechanic is best shown in Kingdom Come Deliverance in my opinion. The armor and even weapons that slain enemies have is actually damaged because of the fight you or someone else had with them. sometimes its annoying, sure, but its still cool that they went more in depth with that mechanic
I don't understand how come no one did the sword cutting mechanic like MGRR to this day, even if a game is bad (which MGRR isn't) that mechanic is extremely satisfying, i really hope to see it in more games
Remember the destructible terrain in Black ? The PS2 game ? Man that was dope
Love the slide down ladder in Elden Ring mechanic b/c let’s face it some of those ladders are really high.
For me it's always been the ragdolls physics lol. The Hitman series is such a beautiful thing lol
Hands down the best gaming channel there is. You guys make the content the people want to see.
An old but revolutionary Spanish game let you cut your enemies and even use their limbs as weapons. Blade, the edge of darkness. Kind of like an old dark souls that is worth revisiting. I remember playing it as a kid completely in awe. Also, it had amazing light effects for it's time.
I seriously don’t have enough words to thank you.

I agree with all except the using the hands one. For instance - and certainly for me in the worst case - Tomb Raider: In the original Tomb Raiders (1 to Angel of Darkness), the sense of fear and danger when you didn't know where to jump, if you would do the right jump and if you somehow forget to press the right button for Lara to grab the ledge and she died an horrible death! - same way does when you actually find the way to go and where to jump and finally pass that part of the level, it was magical and have us a feeling of accomplishment! And then.... after Legend, she not only auto-grabs everything, but also they use this weird light shades on edges and places you are supposed to jump for her to automatically grab, that take all sense of exploration and danger. I mean it feels wrong, it just feels cheesy and it removes the thrill of finding how to solve the puzzles.
RED FACTION GUERRILLA!!!! It’s one of my favorite games of all time, glad to see it get some deserved love
I luv ur vids-im a fan-buut, i suggest you do a rtx 3050 interview because im thinking about getting it and i just want your opinion

@[卐]Lakehuntist ⸜⁄ uhh, you litteraly put a fake checkmark on you...
You know, though, for the sword part: it is true that having the possibility to slash and see the cuts in the direction of the slash it's actually satisfying but it's a bit unrealistic to cut through a body. It requires a lot of strength because there may be armors or eventually just bones and ...a lot of parts. Meanwhile, some mediaeval games, at least, let you cut in the direction you choose. Not to forget that only a few swords were made so that they could actually cut: if you think about the European longsword...it was more of a piece of metal that crushed and pierced eventually
I feel like Control should’ve had a nod at number 10. I was surprised by just the sheer amount of things I could destroy in that game

Yeach but I would rather list its telekinesis mechanic here.
red faction on the ps2 blew my mind as a kid lol such a good era of video games
Honestly The Last of Us series needs its own episode of how good it's AI is.
Some credit gotta be given to Mafia 3. Not only can you slide down ladders but because Lincoln is so massive he basically climbs most ladders in 2 steps.
for map updates one of the first game that comes in my mind is chernobylite. The areas keep updating, you can create machines that will stop supernatural enemies, stop the spread of the radiation, you also have to keep them out of sight so the enemies ain't gonna destroy them and i love all of that
The flip side of Betheshda's loot mechanic is that no matter what size or gender you take the armor or clothing from, it all magically molds itself to your bodyshape. Even metal armor just bends to your figure, no matter if you took it off a skinny woman and you are a big buffy orc. This to me is less realistic than not being able to loot the corpses.
I try to pet all the fire puppies and poison puppies in COD Cold War zombies which only happens if you used the toxic bullet upgrade that allows you to convert enemies into allies for a brief moment.
Not played SC: Conviction in a long time and did enjoy utilising the last known position mechanic get NPC's to move about for my benefit.
I will never get tired of the collapsing building of BF4, that’s when i fell in love with the series
I worked for Tuxedo Labs as one of the two QA analysts on Teardown. I have about 3000 hours played on that game. And I'm in the credits!

Pitfall: The Lost Expedition had a funny case of the sliding down ladders where your character would smack their head on each bar while sliding down. Good early implementation.
The NPC's of RDR2 have better social lives than most people I know. Just follow them around town and watch what they do! They actually have daily activities and chores; its insane someone actually coded all of them to do so many tasks in a given day! It really adds to the games immersion and most games don't even come close to this level of realism.
to add on to number 10; the just cause series is really fun with the way the destructible work. sure blowing something up is cool, but I loved taking the time to break things with the tether physics
10:56 "There's something there!" cracked me up!
Touching and moving through bushes makes sound that alerts enemies. The original STALKER.
