Gamings Most ADDICTIVE Movement Mechanic

Ойындар

Ever since I was a kid, the idea of using a device to propel one's self higher and faster than normal was always exciting to me. And it got me thinking...
From TF2 Rocket Jumping to Raze Satchel Jumps, what exactly is it that makes explosive jumping so addictive- so satisfying? Well as a man of science I figured it’s my duty to answer this question. And after many hours of grueling research, scouring the web for answers, I’ve finally figured it out and broken it down into a 10 minute video essay for your viewing pleasure!

It's interesting that there are mechanics like Pharah and Junkrat jumps in Overwatch that are so limited when Lucio exists in the same game. He hits all 4 of the requirements really well in my opinion (taking them as requirements for general movement tech rather than just rocket jumping). He's one of the main reasons I play the game at all, the wall riding is just so fun and satisfying.

For overwatch I think the most addictive movement mechanic is Lucio without a doubt. Since he uses the walls around him it can be used in so many different ways and even after playing him for a while there’s a lot left to be desired in my movement compared to some other players. there are also studios maps in the game made by players that test your level for maneuvering around a map. Would definitely enjoy a video diving into this topic and your personal thoughts on it

In Junkrat's defense (as someone who has several thousand hours on him): his movement is clunky at first, and I won't deny that it's janky AF, but once you learn it properly you can do some crazy things and it becomes quite fun. My favorite example is a jump on Nepal Sanctum. You can utilize four mines to do a kind of neo jump around the entire map boundary, going from your spawn to the enemy spawn right as they enter the building, allowing for a devastating flank. Basic tutorial: Throw one mine at the top left corner of the spawn door, then wait for the cooldown while the match is starting. As the ramp reaches about 15 degrees, jump forwards and right, detonating the mine as you pass over the top line of the door. Face the corner of the sanctum and immediately throw a second mine directly behind you and detonate it ~0.5 seconds after it's out. Wait four seconds, then throw a mine directly back, detonating it as soon as it's out. You have to be almost frame perfect on this one to get enough distance. As soon as it comes off cooldown (should be ~3.5 seconds if you timed everything right), throw another mine in front of you and right, then detonate it as it completes its first revolution (about 0.3 seconds). That will shift your momentum dramatically, sending you at a 90 degree angle into the enemy courtyard. The rollout takes ~10 seconds from doors opening to landing, which happens to be the same time most teams will reach the little enclosure in front of the sanctum. This is perfect, because they'll be grouped up in a predictable position, facing away from you, and not expecting you to be there. Ideal situation for Junkrat to cause havoc. I've gotten several team kills with this, although more often than not you'll only end up making a 2-1 trade, heavily damaging the rest of the team, and identifying their comp early, which is still basically a guaranteed first fight win if you've got a competent team. Unless they have a fucking baptiste, in which case you might as well just jump in the pit and be done with it.

First of all, great video! Its always crazy to see such high end production on a criminally underrated channel, especially one that makes content revolving around probably the most fun aspect of several games! I fell in love with movement in games after watching cs:go surf videos waaay back in 2014, but since my computer was a literal calculator that could only run roblox on 4 fps, I didnt really have many options. I upgraded to a laptop my grandmother got which made so much difference. I ended up playing surf mods on roblox and grinding for thousands of hours, now with a pretty decent skill cap for any movement related game. Recently in 2021, I got a gaming computer and since then I've dumped thousands of hours (again) into several games, trying to perfect movement. Most notably; Raze satchels and Jett's speed in valorant, Lucio's insane capabilities on overwatch, hitting consistent bhops in cs:go (peaked at supreme), and most recently the insanely addictive nature of Neon White, probably the best indie game Ive played in the past couple years. Seeing this kind of representation from a generally overlooked part of core game mechanics is always a blessing! Keep up the great content man, and I would definitely recommend giving Neon White's speedrunning and peculiar movement a look. The intricate time skips are absolutely crazy, even further beyond considering the game creators pushing for the fastest achievable times by adding secret rewards!

The deceleration rate in OW can be altered and it currently exists on Lucio. I feel like there shouldn't be a deceleration rate at all. Imagine Cassidy rolling off an edge and maintaining that momentum until he lands, or Soldier 76 jumping out of sprint and maintaining that momentum until he lands. Pharah and Junkrat would benefit so much from maintaining velocity at a cost of losing health from jumps and having some of their kit reworked. I hate how OW handles this, but I also love Lucio's movement. Terrific video by the way.

My favorite rocket jump is the RJ250 overclock in Deep Rock Galactic. It’s only available to the engineer dwarf for his grenade launcher, but it changes the engineer from a usually low-movement character to a character with some of the best movement in the game (if you get good with it that is!). It’d be a bit hard to rate it if you haven’t played DRG before since unlocking the specific RJ250 overclock is based on luck, but it’d be fun to see you review it!

Having 1000+ hours in Overwatch, I wholeheartedly agree that explosive (or any kind of) movement isn't the best. It feels too static and it retains almost zero momentum. Being a 5v5 game does make it so that isn't just a clusterfuck of players flying everywhere but it's a shame that we got a vanilla TF2 version of movement. Overall amazing video! I think another detail to take in account is how the game itself limitates explosive jumping. Because Valorant is a more slow paced game Raze has limited blast packs allowing her to perform only 1/2 jumps per round. On the other hand TF2 allows for many jumps, but the explosion deals damage therefore you are still limitated. Finally Quake Live being an extrimely fast paced game gives full freedom of movement.

This makes me think about the sliding/surfing/dashing and then jumping to launch yourself up in video games. Like when you use Moira's 'Fade' and you jump to give yourself that big boost forward or like Sojourn's 'Power Slide'. It's also similar to when you use Widowmaker's grapple and press space to jump right before you reach your location and it just boosts you towards the direction you're going. Also more on the surfing part, like Lucio's movement, or counter strike surf.

As a Pharah main in Overwatch since 2016, you have no idea how satisfying it was when Wrecking Ball launched years later, with actual movement techs, velocity that carries over, and one of the highest skill caps in the game. Movement is so fun in video games, and Ball's whole kit is dependent entirely on how well he can move and retain speed. He just feels like such a step up from every other character except maybe Lucio.

Junkrat isnt programmed like that because of the game or physics engine. Since the engines create the physics but the mechanics manually programmed tell it what to do. Meaning Junkrat woulda been programmed that way on purpose, probably so even if youre not entirely in front of it and maybe even be slightly behind it, it still assumes you just wanna sticky jump and shoot you up/forward (fool proof). Also im pretty sure if you hit enemies with it i do believe it acts like explosives in other games. Its a case of depth vs accessibility.
